MSNBC Anchor Mockingly Asks GOP Congressman If He Has ‘Degree In Economics’… Turns Out He Does!

We blogged earlier today on the heated discussion between MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer and Alabama GOP Congressman Rep. Mo Brooks. In case you missed it, when speaking about President Obama’s spending and stimulus decisions in the first year of his Presidency, the heated interview climaxed with this back and forth:
Brewer: We were looking at going–reverting a depression at that point. Everyone, the Fed Chairman–
Rep. Brooks: Well I disagree we were going into a depression, but go ahead.
Brewer: Do you have a degree in economics?
Rep. Brooks: Yes ma’am I do, highest honors.
Rep. Brooks official bio says that the Congressman graduated from Duke University in three years with a double major in political science and economics, with highest honors in economics. After Duke, Rep. Brooks graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in 1978.
Brewer’s question seems especially interesting considering that economics is a Top 10 major for undergrads. Brewer, who does not have a degree in economics, quickly realized her gaffe and responded on Facebook after the interview:

Not only did she make the mistake of not knowing the answer before she spoke, her argument is fraught with logical fallacy. After that embarrassing question, she lost all credibility.
Where does MSNBC get these loons? When MSNBC found themselves in a ratings hole, they immediately grabbed a shovel and continued to dig. To facilitate the digging they have all of these “tools”: Chris Mathews, Contessa Brewer, Lawrence O’Donnell, Ed Schultz, Cenk Uygur and up until a couple of months ago, Keith Olberman. If that don’t work, they will bring in a race-baiting blast master: Al Sharpton.

It’s not that complicated to make the determination by anyone who is a bit sharp, with a business back ground, and well-acquainted with the overall financial situation.
Also, she’s expounding on economic principles with probably just a degree in journalism, yet feels the congressman needs a degree in economics to give his opinion.

He has an undergraduate degree in economics, one that was, judging from his age, earned about 30-40 years ago. I have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from a much better school than Duke and I got it 5 years ago. I don’t consider myself qualified to design a research project, head a dig, or do any of the other things Anthropologists do after finishing their PhD training.
Also, the author points out that he graduated in three years, as if it’s something to respect. Here’s the truth about people who graduate early: they are usually kids who don’t want to spend more money, or kids or generally don’t like being in school and are itching to get out. Neither of which are illegitimate reasons to leave, but it certainly doesn’t make you a better scholar, and spending LESS time in school doesn’t make you know MORE about your subject.

I call for Rhetorical Justice! !
Every argument should be “balanced” so that neither side has more facts and reason than the other (unless one side is more compassionate). This will result in less shouting and more harmony. Those that refuse these common sense rules are mean spirited and only interested in partisan gain and so will be excluded from all arguments.

When we get to that range, there will be enough unemployment checks to get the economy into full growth mode. Hard fail induces hard stop. Love your theory about how 20% unemployment is going to generate enough unemployment checks to get the economy growing, but reality doesn’t work that way. At the point we hit 20 percent unemployment (as calculated by the DOL bogus numbers), the US Economy ceases to exist as we know it. That is well past the edge of the abyss, and you will see anarchy in the streets at those numbers.
I understand anarchy may look real good to you proggies, but the objective reality is a bit simpler: The inner cities (mostly libbies) self-destruct as the bulk of the rural areas revert back to more base skills and survive (mostly conservatives). Couple years of that, no liberals to talk about and the survivors (mostly conservative) begin reconstituting a proper America.
Under such a scenario, I’ll be sure to commission a monument to the failed organizations of socialists that annihilated themselves in the power vacuum they created. I’ll be sure it has this memoria on it:
“That a people shall be reminded forevermore: the failings of the few to believe they could suborn the many ‘for the greater good of all’ ran these streets slick with their own entrails. Never forget their trepidation, and never repeat it.”
