MSNBC Guest Suggests Romney Is Racist for Giving Money to Struggling Black Woman

MSNBC guest Joy-Ann Reid, who writes for NBCUniversal-owned website theGrio.com, suggested that Mitt Romney was racist for helping a struggling African American woman he met while on the campaign-trail by giving her money from his own wallet. ”It galls me,” Reid started. “I don’t even like to watch it. I felt like it plays into every sort of patronizing stereotype of black people. Oh, here’s this little lady, let me give her 50 bucks.”

The woman, Ruth Williams, said she was praying for divine guidance as to how she would pay a late electric bill when she happened upon the Romney tour bus. After talking to Romney about her troubles, he reportedly gave the woman approximately $50 to help her pay the electric bill.

Rather than consider the instances full-context, however, Reid was outraged by what she considered to be a condescending act.

Reid, who appeared on “Now with Alex Wagner” along with panelist Ari Melber of The Nation, stated:

As an African-American woman, it galls me. I don’t even like to watch it. I felt like it plays into every sort of patronizing stereotype of black people. Oh, here’s this little lady, let me give her 50 bucks. I mean, this is the guy who offered a bet of $10,000 on stage, you know, to another candidate, but, you know, here, let me lay off 50 bucks on this woman. And I think it plays into that conservative meme that you don’t need actual programs that the government puts in place to help people in need, we’ll just give them charity. The church will take care of them, I’ll give them 50 bucks.

Melber, on the other hand, argued that Romney was simply faced with the emotional decision of wanting to help someone in need.

Melber began, “When I worked for campaigns and candidates, you often have these events and people stand up and they don’t have policy questions, they raise their personal problems.”

“And so they talk about how they can’t pay this bill, or they went down to this government agency and had a problem, and, it’s a very difficult thing for candidates because you sort of say, well, if this is a case worker issue, you should talk to someone in my office or let’s send some letters to the agency. There’s that technocratic response. And then there’s the human, heartfelt response, which is, someone’s hurting and they need help.”

He added:

And the society needs to help them and that’s usually through government. And so, the point I have here is, I think Mitt Romney’s response — he gave this woman cash — was, she needs help. Right? The problem here isn’t just giving the cash, although, your criticisms are on point, the problem is that that’s not how he legislates, because they want to oppose the payroll tax cut. They want to oppose unemployment insurance for people who are between jobs. They basically have a policy that they can’t even defend one-on-one because he feels so bad saying no, which was his government response to her.

Was the act patronizing or was Romney merely placed in a position where he felt he needed to help the struggling Williams. If faced with the same set of circumstances and you were in Romney’s shoes, what would you do?

    That is so typical of black folks, they loving pulling the race card crap. I am not saying all of them do because i have some black friends that are hard working and understand the reward of hard work. But there is still that sect of black folks that just do not get it. I do not owe them a damn thing! I think it was nice of Romney to help out someone in need. That Joy-Ann Reid is just another racist idiot!

      I totally agree BUDDYT!!! I am white and I grew up around a lot of black people in TX and I tell ya some get it!! And the rest, their life is gang life and entitlements cause that’s all they know. A lot of them come from generations of welfare families and gang life’s. The majority don‘t even try to change cause they feel that they have been oppressed so they feel entitled and they pull the race card every time some try’s to help or disagrees with them. I seen it first hand where I grew up. I too have a lot of black friends. They say the same thing!

      That‘s the only money the struggling poor will ever get from Romney if he’s elected President.

      In any case, that was likely another unscripted moment that will only hurt Romney. He assumed the woman was asking for a handout, and being the millionaire he is, he gave her some money. Nice, but that won’t net him any votes. Everybody knows he’s not going to go around the country and give money out of his wallet to people who are struggling to make ends meet.

      Although I am not a Romney fan in the least, I do appreciate his gesture of compassion on his own account. Always remember this, these pathetic socialist/real racist crackpots are never satisfied and have the ability to politicize anything and polarize anyone. Tell me this, what would she have said if Romney would have not done anything and just kept walking onward and didn’t help the black lady with the troubles. This is how they do it, pay attention: If a corporation is bringing the consumer lower prices, why they must be undercutting the competition by not paying “fair” wages to their employees, and producing cheap quality, probably due to greedy execs taking all the money for themselves and not having a unionized workforce; If a corporation is bringing to the market a more expensive and better quality product, they refuse to recognize the better quality, instead, it is obviously due to those greedy execs again ripping people off so they can live the high life while the “99%” struggles, and they darn sure would never recognize that it might be because of Union contracts with the company for their prices being higher.       Jo-Ann wouldn’t have been hatefull if she had known that the woman prayed for the help. Jo thought she had begged for the money making the woman look like most other beggers of all races. Some beggers have to beg but some only do it because of all the money they make. Our State paper here in Oklahoma a few years ago interview some of the folks that are at the exits on the interstate in OK City and was surprized. One woman who had a college degree stated that she averaged almost $300.00 cash a day. This was almost like making $500.00 with taxes.

      Well then she surely most feel that affirmative action is condesending and be littleing to blacks for suggesting that they can’t get promotion and hired on their merits and abilities. And she surely most be attacking government sponsered minoritie scholarships that grants scholarships to blacks with lowers scores than people of other races because it implys blacks can’t compete in areas of academic.
      And she must be outraged and the city of new haven for removing a the test required by the fire department when seeking promotions because no a single black appicant passed it. It must steam her buns that the racist removed the test so blacks could be promoted as if they couldn’t pass the test like every other race and better assure quality in leadership…..

      Why is everything done to black people racist? If anyone helps them it’s racist because they are just trying to show they are not racist when they really are, but if they don’t get help, it’s racist as well, because they don’t treat them fairly. What needs to happen is people need to stop complaining that they are always the victim and stop blaming every motive on racism, because there are a lot of decent people that do things out of love and not pity or to try and keep their racist skeleton in the closet. I believe Mitt was sincere in helping a “person” not “a black lady”. Did anyone ask Mitt why he did it, or are we content with media playing mind reader?

      The progressive socialist have made their careers giving needy people rich people’s money. The only thing they are mad about is they didn’t get their cut first. They weren’t allowed to give what was left to the woman in the name of big brother government programs. How can they stay in power if rich people start giving their money directly to those who need it? For every 1 given to the government in taxes for entitlements, only about 30 cents makes it way to those who need it.
      The federal government is nothing more than a poorly designed charity organization. Let’s put those who we owe favors to and our friends on the board of the charity, they don’t have to do anything, but yet they receive their cut of the 70% the charity pays their board.

      I like Santorum, but I will vote for whoever is nominated. Not because I’m a racist, because I’m not a socialist.     Whenever you feel the need to be generous to a stranger you meet on the street, there are a lot of factors and concerns that come in to play. It wasn’t as if Romney was intimately acquainted with this woman or her needs in order to be in a position to comfortably do more than a 50 spot. I have a hard time giving money to folks I meet on the street who are asking for help because I personally do not want to bankroll a drug or alcohol habit, and therefore I find myself reluctant to open my wallet. By the same token I have felt impressed on different occasions to offer food already in my vehicle or to purchase food using my bank card (don’t often carry cash). I also donate to my church which in turns sponsors programs to assist the poor.

    Romney was not patronizing. The offended Black woman is simply race bating. Typical thing to do. I also find that when a wealthy person gives nothing it is counted against them and when they give any amount, they are questioned as to whether it was enough. Class envy is immoral (#10). Romney was being more generous in that moment than his critics have probably ever been in dealing with random strangers.

      I’m working in Indianapolis, lived my first 40 years in and around Memphis, TN. Tonight, I was approached by a man at the gas station who asked to use my cell phone. He said he was looking for his friend who was supposed to be on the side of the interstate broken down in his car.

      I didn’t even think twice about allowing him to use my cell while I pumped my gas, I was just trying to help another American help out his friend. What’s he going to do run off with my phone? If he needs my cell phone that badly, go for it. I have nothing I value with my life but my family.

      Yes the man was an African-American who asked to use my phone, and no he wasn’t well dressed. He looked like every other hard working American trying to make ends meet in an economy being destroyed by progressive socialist.

      I will not let the progressive socialist change how I treat my fellow Americans, even though I’m a racist, capitalist pig in their eyes. Voting for a candidate other than King Hussein may be racist, only if progressive socialist are now considered a race.

    Where do blacks think welfare money comes from? The majority of it comes from hard working white citizens. If a black man had handed her the money, nothing negative would have been said.
