MSNBC Host Asks Van Jones for Advice: What Can Progressives Do?

Big victories for the Republican Party last week have liberal progressives on edge and so-called “green” policies facing uncertain futures. Fortunately for the progressive base, MSNBC went right to the source to get their new marching orders.
In an “interview” with MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur this week, former White House green jobs czar and current senior fellow at the Center for American Progress Van Jones criticized the president’s progressive base for “sitting back, munching popcorn, blogging and tweeting about what the president is not doing.”
“You gotta get specific with me. You gotta tell me what can progressives actually do?” Cenk pressed in MSNBC’s typically unbiased fashion, of course.
After Cenk accused the White House of throwing him under the bus, Jones went on to plug his Green For All organization and encouraged progressives to support the EPA, which he claimed will be put “on the chopping block” with Republicans regaining control in the House.
In addition, Jones asserted that banks and oil companies like Halliburton are plenty of money and that they should be forced to pay for putting unemployed Americans back to work:

The epa has gotten way out of control and needs to be reigned in; they have way too much power if they can bypass congress and enact laws on their own. THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE CONGRESS FOR!!! And, asking Van Jones for advice? Come on, MAN!!! Why not just stick your head in the lion’s mouth!!!!

Posted on November 11, 2010 at 11:21pmI don’t want wind and solar power at the expense of oil power. American oil companies should just find a way to go out there and drill anyway – to hell with these oppressive, Marxist, pretended legislations.
Our own oil is good for us. Foreign oil is bad for us when the foreign oil comes from those who want to destroy our economy and our lives.
BP is great. I wonder how many lives were saved by the use of all the oil BP drilled? I wonder how many new markets were created?
Now BP suck when it comes to that bomber guy, so screw them for that. But the oil is great. And when we can get rid of the environmental regulations, we should drill for more of our own oil and maybe we won’t need BP to do that for us (it’s our oil, after all).

Posted on November 11, 2010 at 11:05pmI don’t hate the federal government. The federal government has a role to play in service to the private sector. And since the private sector is the the creator and sustainer of all governments everywhere, in all times, governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.
Governments aren’t supposed to prosper at the expense of the private sector, since government is like the private sector’s “overhead”; When the economy is such that the private sector suffers, it’s time to cut out some of that overhead.

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 6:48amThe Progressive agenda is an Act of War on the United States of America. But, they know they could never actually win a real war or legitimately change the Constitution , so they do the slow erosion tactics that Mr. Beck has so brilliantly exposed. High Crimes and Treason, no doubt; however, I’ll refer you to the very specific nature of Treason outlined in Article III of the Constitution the United States of America. It’s interesting how specific it is. The Founders were absolutely brilliant and progressives simply cannot see that brilliance or don’t want to, so they try to destroy that which they do not or cannot understand.

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 9:40amActually, this is a reply to anticommie, but I don’t know any other way to post my comment with his.
One of the things I don’t hear anyone talking about in all this is the role of zoning laws in all of this. I learned a long time ago, when I lived in Baltimore, MD, just exactly how oppressively zoning laws can be. If you ban inexpensive housing, like house trailers, then you force the poor into apartments. If you use zoning laws to limit where apartments can be, then you can segregate people by race and class. And if you artificially keep rents high, you can limit their ability to save up money to get an education, buy a house and move out. I don’t hear anyone talking about the effects of zoning on the housing crisis.
In very recent history, a man was free to build the best house he could afford and to live in it while he improved and repaired it. For some new immigrants, this meant a sod house on the prairie. Those soddies were the deaths of some families, as their roofs came off in the middle of blizzards, but for most families, they were the birth of independence and land and home ownership. Nowadays, the only way to get a house is to buy one that is compliant with local zoning by borrowing vast sums of money that are going to keep you slaves to debt.
Not only that, but even the most inexpensive houses are now zoning compliant and involve borrowing money. You can’t exactly build your own mobile home to your specs. You borrow money to buy a factory built, zoning compliant mobile home and make payments with interest on that money. You also have to pay lot rental. And in the end, you have a flimsy home built on lumber that is not even 1 1/2 by 3 1/2, with a flimsy metal skin on the outside and a flimsy masonite skin on the inside. A soddie would probably be safer in winds, tornados, floods or blizzards. We can’t even pretend that making a house trailer the bottom option is about keeping people safe or building environmentally friendly or about aesthetics. The only thing I can see that it does is force them into loans.
Maybe its high time that we start letting people make their own decisions about what to do with their own property. If they want to live in a dirt floor shed with a porta-potty for a year or two in order to save up money to buy a trailer for cash, who are we to stop them and force them into a loan?

The solution would be simple get rid of the EPA and replace it with something thats better and cheaper.

I understand the need for conservation, and agree with it. My problem comes when the EPA has the near god-like authority to shut down or impose new laws in the matter of regulations without any type of Congressional approvals, or controls. If the EPA as a whole is out of control, then either reign it in or replace it with a more effective and efficient one. Whatever waste needs to go, get rid of it.
