MSNBC Host Attempts Apology for Dissing Use of ‘Heroes’ to Describe America’s Fallen Servicemembers

NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC host Chris Hayes says he’s sorry for his comments about his discomfort with the use of the word “heroes” to describe fallen soldiers.

Hayes made the comments during his show on Sunday, the day before Memorial Day. He was met with a strong backlash, including from a veterans’ group.

Hayes said he was “uncomfortable” with the word because it seemed like a rhetorical device that could justify engaging in more wars.

In a blog post Monday on the show’s website, Hayes apologized for not living up to his own “standards of rigor, respect and empathy.”

He says he was trying to discuss the divide between the military and civilians but ended up reinforcing a stereotype of a pundit talking about something he hasn’t experienced.

This is the full statement from Chris Hayes:

On Sunday, in discussing the uses of the word “hero” to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don’t think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I’ve set for myself. I am deeply sorry for that.

As many have rightly pointed out, it’s very easy for me, a TV host, to opine about the people who fight our wars, having never dodged a bullet or guarded a post or walked a mile in their boots. Of course, that is true of the overwhelming majority of our nation’s citizens as a whole. One of the points made during Sunday’s show was just how removed most Americans are from the wars we fight, how small a percentage of our population is asked to shoulder the entire burden and how easy it becomes to never read the names of those who are wounded and fight and die, to not ask questions about the direction of our strategy in Afghanistan, and to assuage our own collective guilt about this disconnect with a pro-forma ritual that we observe briefly before returning to our barbecues.

But in seeking to discuss the civilian-military divide and the social distance between those who fight and those who don’t, I ended up reinforcing it, conforming to a stereotype of a removed pundit whose views are not anchored in the very real and very wrenching experience of this long decade of war. And for that I am truly sorry.

As we say in the Army, “the max effective range of an excuse is 0meters” also I would say those Americans that don’t share our pain from personal knowledge share it from virtue and empathy because they have an imagination for what we go through and willingly choose to feel and share our pain.

You sir, are a guttersnipe who is not and will not ever be man enough to walk in the boots of a military man or women.

While he said it inartfully, Hayes makes a good point. Most of the wars that the USA fought during the past century and including this century were pointless, such as WWI and while one might give a pass to WWII there are those who believe it might have been avoided. Korea and Vietnam were a waste while Desert storm was an oil war that needed to be fought. We could ill afford to allow Saddam control over that much oil and so Bush the Elder ordered him out of Kuwait, attacked when he refused to leave and said that the war would end when Iraq pulled her troops out of Kuwait and actually kept his word. There was no need for us to attack Iraq again in 2003 and there is no need for us to remain in Afghanistan. While I would never agree that Obama should be reelected, I do hope that if elected Romney will push back the neocon push for us to invade Iran and Syria for no good reason.

This story is about an ignorant reporter saying that he wasn’t comfortable calling military personnel who died in said conflicts heroes not whether the government should have ordered said personnel into the war that is another story entirely. We as military members don’t ask to be sent to god forsaken lands to fight we do it on orders from the government that YOU and every other voting citizen elects. You have the freaking idiot hippy ideology going on about the military which is just doing the job that it is ordered to do. You have to seperate the two in your mind.

You guys realize that wasn’t actually an apology. The uproar is not over the fact that he “opined” about the divide between civilians and the military (trying to soothe his black soul by pointing out that the majority of the country has not served either… which is the equivalent of my three year old saying “daddy he did it too”). The uproar is over the fact that he said that our Fallen Heroes were not in fact heroes… he never retracted or apologized for that statement… he also chose to post the apology online rather than allow his lunatic viewers to see his apology on national television. (all 12 of them)

“A small percentage of our population is asked to shoulder the entire burden”.
That small percentage are all heroes who sacrifice so that people like you can open their mouth and insert both feet. If it wasn’t for those heroes you would not be free to spout your garbage.
If you want to condemn the wars blame the politicians not the soldiers.
I was one of those who came back from a war that I didn’t ask for, only to be spit on and called names. My only crime was going where our politicians sent me but the liberals decided that it was the soldiers fault. When people come up to me today and say “Thank you for your service” I say thank you when what I really want to say is where the hell were you in 1972?

Most Americans can imagine what we who volunteered to serve go through. The Liberal pundits can’t imagine anything outside of their norm. They can‘t understand why we don’t have a draft because what sane person (to them) would volunteer to fight? They must just be blood-thirsty hawks who only want to fight. I learned by joining that some things are worth dieing for. I was never called to make that ultimate sacrifice, because my service was during the cold war, but had I been called upon, I, too, would have given all.

At the same time that evidence is presented by The Media Research Center and others amongst of suppression and distortion of the news, our elected politicians can look at the political make-up of the employee profiles of the likes of MSNBC. Yes. He does. But he fails in mentioning the difference between “hero” and “soldier”. I see WWII Vets being drafted as heroes as they fought the evil of all evils, the Nazi’s. But I sorta have to agree with him to some extent because I see most wars involving the USA as pointless. Revolutionary War, World War are shining examples of what heroes are. Most others aren’t. And especially all the black ops we have no idea about going on… for all the soldiers know they’re killing for more power in the name of a greedy politician.

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

Teach your children the truth, teach your children the meaning of memorial day, and teach them about the tremendous amount of love and honor it requires to leave your family and serve in the military. Character often leads a person to take action. Action sometimes results in honor although sometimes it leads to disgrace and dishonor. MSNBC…..your actions have led you on a road that is filled with disgrace.

Regarding the apology….I think Abraham Lincoln said it best…”If once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem.”

Sort of apologizing. Sort of explaining things away. Careful never to take responsibility – remember, he simply failed to meet his own ‘bar’ of what’s acceptable. Responsibility must be skirted, shifted away, deflected onto an ‘even more guilty collective society’, for which he and the left of course are ‘above’. I am so over these arrogant, self-agrandized idiots. Degrees are not synonymous with commonsense, compassion, wisdom. He is another of the ‘so smart they’re stupid’ crowd. Vote them out. @Bill Rowland: “Where the hell were you in 1972?” In my case, I was kind of preoccupied with being born. I’m 40 years old, you see. In fact, anyone who isn‘t in their late 50’s or older now was very likely not old enough to be aware of politics back in ‘72, let alone in a position to condemn or praise our troops for their actions as they returned home from the Vietnam War. Please bear that in mind the next time someone thanks you for your service: chances are that unless they’re retirement age or close to it, they _couldn’t_ thank you back then when you really needed it.

While this lib was so far off base with his rediculous comments I can at least give him credit for what seems to be a heartfelt apology. On the few times Libs actually get called out for the things they say you tend to get a half hearted apology saying something like “I mispoke” instead of any showing of true remorse. This guy at least gave a legnthy statement that really seemed to be genuin. Since its such a rare occurence to see a lib give a real apology I will have to say to this guy….. Apology accepted.

So what do we make of the conservatives who rarely apologize for their misrepresentations and mistakes. As noted by Vietnam and the court marshal of 2nd. Lt. Calley not all wars honor America or the military and not all soldiers are heroes. And it is the hypocrisy of the court marshal of Lt. Calley while we were bombing Hanoi every night and killing civilians that should have us constantly reexamining the destructiveness and moral repulsiveness of war. A repulsiveness that hinges greatly on who is the aggressor vs. the defender and what is the context and motivations behind the conflict.
The liberation of Kuwait is perhaps on one end of the scale while the Crusades are on the other. If you need help figuring which one is on the positive end and which is on the negative end, you are part of a bigger problem.

The mask fell off Chris Hayes and now he’s scrambling to put it back on.

The American left has an innate contempt for the U.S. military. They have been brought to dislike the U.S. military by their indoctrinators in colleges, high schools, etc. This is why Hayes couldn’t bring himself to call anyone in the U.S. military a hero.

The cliches and platitudes are abundant in Hayes’ words- “dodged a bullet”, “guarded a post”, “rescuing fellow soldiers..things like that”. Clearly Hayes is utterly bereft of any understanding of the military.

And in a window into how the American left truly thinks and operates….Hayes suggested removing the word “hero” when discussing the military and using a leftist approved replacement that takes away the aspect of noble sacrifice and replaces it with “neutral” word. How many times have we seen the left do this kind of thing? “Foetus” instead of child. “Women’s rights“ instead of ”free” contraception. “Bullying” and “experimenting” to insinuate acceptance of homosexual practices to children. Observing Hayes is like a “101” course in leftist tactics and thought.

But why did Hayes appear to apologise? The American left has to work itself onto the public psyche. It cannot just throw itself openly into the national conversation because their views and aspirations are counter to the values and aspirations of the American people. Like Obama “not” being a socialist, while attending socialist

These leftists always apologize after they get bombarded with those that would disagree. I do not accept his apology. I would love to know where he gets there is a division between the people and the military. There is only a division between the likes of people like him(those on the left) and there is no division between Americans and the military. We love them and the sacrficie they make for their country and I feel bad who they have for a chain of command these days. God Bless them

Nope, not on a team, and I do not represent the Army when I compete. I shoot like a regular civilian. I am no pro, but it is a good hobby, and coincides with Army training.

It is not all that expensive if you reload. Once you pay the initial cost of rifle, coat, stool, spotting scope, then you just have to pay the gas to get to competitions, and provide the ammo.

The nationals and some of the other matches are a great events I enjoy small bore, pistol, high power rifle, 1000 yard open sight, action shooting. I do not do any trap or skeet, but shoot just about any competition I can get in.

Generaly you get a very patriotic and conservative crowd that shows up to these events. It is something else, when a fourteen year old girl with purple hair, beats you at the 600 yard line.

Major, you are just too modest! Of course that is a hardship if the Army won’t pay for precision loads, and you are recycling old brass. Depending on the event (600 foot?) where homemade ammo can affect your ultra-competitive scores, unless you have lots of precision reload equipment and proper bullets. Do you melt your own lead? And it takes time away from the base, so you need to burn precious leave hours. Also, are you using an Army trained spotter? That would help, I bet?

Do you ever have to stay overnight? What is the locality like? Is it an interesting place for non-shooters and family? Do you bring the whole family to Ohio with you?

We all admire your personal dedication to your self-funded hobby!

I joined the Army to defend Americans’ frredoms (or so I thought). Yet, when someone expresses their discontent with the way things are going and our lust for never-ending war, we shut them up. We NEED more people, especially veterans to voice their feelings for war. I could never say that averyone who goes and fights for an unworthy cause is a hero either. It is in one’s own opinion whether or not something is a worthy cause. I NEVER felt that I was fighting for something worthy. In fact, almost everyone I know that has come back has regrets and doubts for the reasons they went.

Not EVERYONE wearing a uniform is a hero. I know some that are heroes. Very few since being a hero is not some simple thing you can be by simply putting on a change of clothes. I also know many who wear the uniform that are despicable human beings. The sad part is that I have come across more of those in the military than heroes.

Also, keep in mind that we haven’t decalred war on anyone since 1945. There’s a fact our Drill Sergeants and recruiters left out yet we swore to uphold the Constitution. So instead of shouting him down like a bunch of OWS protesters, how about you support his right to express discontent with the way our country has been doing business.

I‘m sure I’ll be shouted down in here now too.

JROOK, read history closer. We were NOT permitted to bomb Hanoi until much later in the war. Even after a major campaign, Johnson backed off and allowed the Soviets to construct the most formidable SAM cordon in history; THEN he sent in pilots, resulting in the worst kills of the war. This is the result of liberal thought trumping reality on the ground. We lost Vietnam because we weren’t allowed to touch targets of importance and Hanoi was off limits because Johnson and McNamara were terrified that if we actually wiped out Hanoi, it might upset the peace negotiations. They must have been laughing at the stupidity that allowed the passive-aggressive liberal response to the war. I very much agree with you that there are wars that are not worth fighting. But there are too many people in this country who believe that if we just threw down our weapons, the world would like us. Negotiation is only effective from a position of strength, not weakness. Obama’s brand of Communism rewards dictators and punishes their victims. MSNBC just can’t help themselves. I applaud Mr Hayes effort to apologize but it would be foolish to think it was out of remorse. Those of us who have served will defend his right to be an ass, but we sure don‘t have to think that he’s cool for being willing to be an ass.

      MONCINE

Once fired brass is more accurate than new brass. It is called fire forming. High Power Rifle shooters generally buy bullets, I do not know anyone that makes their own. Generally most folks now shoot ARs, and only a few shoot the old M14/M1a or M1 Garand. The black gun shooters generally use a Hornady 75 grain or a Sierra 77 grain HPBT for the 200 and 300 Yards. At the 600 yards (not feet) I use a 80 grain berger bullet. You have to hand load them individually, as they are too long for being fed into a magazine.

My girls are not scouts, but they are shooters.

There is much to do in the Camp Perry, Ohio area. Port Clinton is a quaint little town that comes alive during the competition. It sits right on Lake Erie, so there is swimming, boating, and an Island not to far out for the party folks and drinkers (not I).

Cedar Point Amusement Park is one of the best in the nation, and is close, and has motels where family can stay, while shoters compete.

No spotter in high power, you spot on your own. There are more civillians at Perry, then military. It is run by the Civilan Marksmanship Program (CMP).. CMP was Teddy Roosevelts idea, He believe that with a small standing Army, it is good to have civilians trained with the modern service rifle. In the time of war, the nations will have a stable of shootersy ready.

the real skill at shooting Perry, is calling wind. A ten mile per hour wind at 600 yards, will push your bullet three feet of poi

I can guarantee, there will be no lines at Camp Perry to get a John Hancock from Ranger Pete. I would be hard to find amongst the couple thousand people anyhow. If one were to want an autograph, I would suggest one from SGT Sherri Gallagher from the Army Marksmanship unit, or perhaps SFC Grant Singley from the same unit. They are tops in the nations. SGT Gallagher holds national records, and Singley is one of the most dominant high power shooters in the history of the sport. If one were to want a signature from a civilian, I would recommend David Tubb. He is another top in the world shooter. I consider it humbling just to stand in the same range as these folks.

Watching the matches is free. If one wanted to compete, it only cost chump change to enter the matches, and you can register online http://www.odcmp.com/NM.htm or you can show up and register.

The real cost is equipment. If one were to actually be competitive, you would have to dump around a grand on a rock river or armalite national match rifle, a shooting mat ($80), a spotting scope and tripod ($400 for cheap one), a shooting stool ($100) a shooting coat and glove ($300), a shooting sling ($60), and ammo. You can buy everything right at Perry on vendor row, but you would not have your zeros for 200, 300, and 600 yards.

You can find all of this stuff on Creedmore Sports page. I am sure there is a range in your neck of the woods that does CMP and NRA matches. Great place to lear

Oh yea, if I relied on Kentucky windage, I might end up slingling lead toward Kentucky.

Take the distance (first digit) multiply by wind speed, and always divide by the constant of 10,and this will give you your Minute of Angle Correction (MOA).. One minute is one inch at one hunderd yards, thus one minute is six inches at six hundred yards. This works fine for 5.56 mm ammo, and will get you close with 7.62 mm (M1A)

example – you have a 8 mph wind blowing left to right and you are shooting at the 300 yard line.

(3)00 x 8 = 24 24/10 = 2.4 MOA round to 2.5. My sights are 1/2 MOA per click, thus I would put 5 clicks to the left. If you did not adjust, and just shot at the center of the target, you would be off center by 7.5 in. The X ring is only three inches across

If the wind is blowing from front left, to rear right at a 45 degree angle, then you take half the correction.

No wind, means smoke goes directly up, 3-5 mph, and you just can feel it on your face, 5-8 mph and leaves move. 8-10 mph and small trees sway….. or you can look at the range flag and calculate wind, and some of us look through our spotting scope, turn the focus back a quarter turn, and look at the heat mirage, for a very accurate reading. Mirage takes some serious practice though. You can find a diagram that shows range flag angles with coresponding wind speed. You can also drop grass, and divide the angle by four, but that is too much math for Ranger Pet

If a person wanted to shoot national match for cheap, then shoot national match pistold.

Then you just drop a grand or so on a hardball .45, or get one built. Les Baer makes a hard ball ready for comp, and I think High Standard makes one real affordable. then you do not need the jacket, sling, mat. scope….. Just grap some ammo, and hit the range./

One could also get a Beretta 92 (or M9), but very few gunsmiths in the nation can actually build one for a solid comp gun. They put steel inserts on the farme, to run steel on steel between frame and slide. Also add a barrell bushing to tighten things up, along with a trigger job.

“I’m sorry I said what I think,” is basically what he said. Or, “I‘m sorry I didn’t slam the sacrifice of soldiers in a way that would just get me points with the left without getting me in hot water with the rest of the country.” I never saw any indication that he thinks he made a mistake. He only apologizes for not living up to his standards. That doesn‘t sound like he’s sorry he insulted people who gave their lives. It sounds like he’s sorry people nailed him for it. He doesn’t say “how” he didn’t live up to his standards, That information is key here. Without knowing why he‘s apologizing and what he’s apologizing for there’s no forgiveness for what he said. How exactly did he violate his own standards? Did he get caught? Is that the standard he violated? This is just a typical non-apology apology that we see from the left so often. “I‘m sorry you don’t agree with me,” is their general tact. It stinks to high heaven IMO.

Rush took more damage for correctly interpreting a woman’s actions in order to label her with a name that, while it FIT those actions, was “offensive”. This DORK, completely took a word that so fits the actions of our fallen soldiers, and insisted he wasn’t comfortable with giving folks who DIED for his free speech, such a label. Words mean things, and what this means to me, is this is the same kind of person who would label a soldier “baby killer” after they came home from defending them. Radicals always disdain the protectors of their freedoms…and therefor, in my opinion, do not deserve them.

I can only take his apology at face value. But it’s confusing. He says the point of the original conversation was the disconnect we have with the soldiers who “shoulder the burden” for the rest of us. That sounds like he sees them as heroes! So why then did he ever bother bringing up his “discomfort” with that word during said conversation? I wish his apology had shed some light on WHY the conversation took that odd turn. Without that explanation, it‘s hard to imagine that he’s “truly sorry.” However, I can’t read his heart or mind. So I’ll just forgive. But I won’t forget.

You do have an excellent point. As I added to a comment above, Chris Hayes was literally unknown until he sparked this debate. Now, he has certainly made himself well known to the lefty base, and truly irritated the right. He accomplished his desired outcome by making his name known to many in the public…finally.

Didn’t B.O. just sign something about allowing the government to use propaganda? And isn’t MSNBC in cahoots with the administration?

      I rest my case.

This piece of work meant exactly what he said. He is a pompous over educated d-bag who has no appreciation for the fact that he can sit up there and say whatever disgustingly liberal thing he wants because someone’s father, son, uncle, etc died for his freedom. Please keep it up libs and Nov will be a landslide.

I’ll accept his apology when he resigns from MSNBC and moves to Al Gores Current TV. Until then… his is the face of JZS.

He tried to DIVIDE military and civilians and failed. Obama is going to fail in Nov also.

Go away Chris Hayes- your true “dirtbag self” was clearly exposed regardless of your failed attempt at an apology. The only reason for anyone to remember you is to turn the channel or press delete whenever your name comes up.

Fire him at MSNBC? Hell, they’ll probably promote him, make him co-host with Chrissy Matthews on a new show called, “What Stupid **** Can I Say Today”

      Amen Andy!

I just can’t take “him” serious, when every time I look at “him” I see “her” (or is it I look at “her” and see “him,” oh well, I’ll probably never figure it out)!

I’ve never seen Maddow and this fool on “stage” at the same time, so. . .

Maddow has a few more brains, but is still as addled!

Perhaps a scripted apology, but I believe that I can accept it. Indeed and in deed, our nations veterans who have fought our nations wars and those who have protected the nation in time of peace are truly heroes. We are very fortunate to have them in our midst.

Really? You are O.K. with an “apology” that does not express any regret for the insult made to our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines? Allrighty, then, I suppose that such insult was of no consequence to you.

I’m with you Chuck….that so called apology was anything but IMO. It has the usual bafflegab that liberals seem to be fluent in, certainly along the same lines as the speech writers in the WH when Obongo is forced to walk back a outrageous statement.

After reading the entire transcript I’m left feeling a bit bewildered (miffed) and saying to myself …what apology ? Wtf is this clown babbling about ?

There is no doubt that this man’s argument against the use of the term hero to describe our fallen soldiers is completely off base. There had never been a more apt use of the description. Even though he apologized does he think that people believe that he changed his mind about our military and those who served? He’s a left wing liberal. I think the opinion that he put out there initially is his honest opinion, once again an opinion that he was free to voice because of those same heros who gave their lives. He could never understand the courage and conviction in the hearts and minds of our men and women who have served or are currently serving in our military. After all, he doesn’t even have the courage or conviction to stand by his opinion.

This was a really infeminate apology fitting his original assessment of the use of the term hero. Men, and women have served in the armed forces to defend our country, and the Constitution on which it stands. All who have served, whether they survived or not, are heros. The current Military is volunteer. These brave men and women have knowingly signed up to put themselves in harms way to protect us. I can imagine that a bad day for Chris Hayes, is when he breaks a fingernail, or has a bad hair day. I think it best he just shut up, as he is already drowning in his own elitest rhetoric.
