MSNBC Host Labels Congressman a ‘Tax Criminal’ for Sleeping in Office

According to MSNBC‘s Lawrence O’Donnell (and at least one concerned organization), Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is trying to game the IRS by sleeping on a couch in his congressional office.

During an interview Wednesday evening, O’Donnell labeled Chaffetz a “tax criminal” for not reporting his congressional quarters on his taxes.

Perhaps O’Donnell missed his calling as a bloodthirsty IRS auditor?

Do any of you have any idea how much it costs to live in the DC/Maryland/Virginia beltway? Any at all? I lived there for two years, finding a flat (apartment to you who have never lived abroad) is difficult and finding one near work under 2000 a month is nearly impossible! There are very few safe areas in DC. (One does not walk about near the White House etc. after dark unless you are looking for hookers, drugs, or want to be mugged). The commute is hell on wheels, literally, so if you live outside the beltway very far, expect it to be a long drive or long train or subway commute. Not to mention that new members of Congress cannot afford to support their families at home AND afford a flat for themselves. (members who have been in office eons like dingy Harry etc. have millions in kickbacks and deals so they can afford two homes)

Good for the Congressmen and women who decided to not waste money and bed down in their offices. Most of them have three rooms, including a private bathroom and shower. They also have a gym and showers there they get to use free of charge. They do NOT get a housing allowance, they are elected officials, not military.

Personally, I think they should all either live in barracks like the military do, or if they have families, live in military style housing. I also think that all Congressmen and women should not get paid on dime more than someone who has the rank of Captain or the equivalent in every branch of service. That should save a bit of money right there. And, they shouldn’t have discretionary spending allowances or travel paid for by the American people. No air force jets either – like Queen Nancy likes to order about.

Saving money, folks, has to start somewhere.

Useful idiot Lawrence O’Donnell should shut the heck up.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz is trying to save the taxpayer’s money. He’s been doing this since he got in office. I respect his decision to do that.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz is one of the guys in Congress who is doing a superb job and he’s looking out for we the people. He’s one of the few who really cares about his constituents. I support him.

What a nincompoop Lawrence O’Donnell is. Doesn’t he have anything better to do? The Middle East is on fire and he‘s criticizing a Congressman who’s doing a fantastic job who is choosing to sleep in his office to save money. Wow! What can I say?

How about holding your bungling POTUS’ feet to the fire for what happened in Egypt, Mr. O’Donnell? How about talking about something that is of consequence to the American people? You’re supposed to be a free press and the 4th arm of government. So far, you’ve unapologetically let America down badly.

Andrew, I don’t know how much you make but you and I pay this Congressman VERY well (actually $179 thousand per year). Why do you think he feels its OK to use the Capitol Building (a FEDERAL building) as a flophouse? Is it to prevent the economy of a single apartment house in DC from getting any of his hard earned ‘housing allowance? Is it to gyp the IRS? Is it because he is up at 3am working?

Remember, he gets to use ALL the Capitol facilities while saving on gas, restaurants, etc.

Not only is this guy CHEAP – because he is sponging off you and me – but he is NOT paying taxes (as EXTRA income) on his housing allowance.

While it may not be a criminal offense. HE CERTAINLY IS CHEAP – and he is taking advantage of his power. YOU try using the Capitol as a homeless shelter and see what happens!!

Senior, perhaps you have trouble reading evrything at your age, but the Congressman doesn’t get a housing allowance, so it’s up to him how he finds housing. If there is no law against him using HIS OFFICE for sleeping there can be no complaint against it.

As for the economy not benefiting from him paying for rent somewhere, I’m sure the money he saves will be spent elsewhere more profitable to him. Either way money will be spent and taxes made off it.

How many know that it is your responsibility to know the statutes at large and how they apply to you. That said if anyone wants to try to prove me wrong the 16th is contained in 37 Stat 1785 Part 2 -Private Acts. How is it possible that most people do not know that MOST laws congress writes have no effect in the 50 states.

Here is clue for all the Civics challenged people in here.

THE INCOME TAX – THE TYRANT’S TOOL.
A number of prominent people advocate replacing the income tax with a system they call the Fair Tax. These people grossly underestimate the value of the income tax system to the wannabe tyrants.

For the wannabe tyrants to become true tyrants, one of the near-term objectives is to enact ambiguous laws that convert almost all citizens to criminals. Selective prosecution can then be used to extort political support and destroy political enemies. In 2005 the income, tax code contained 2,139,000 words, of course, the complexity has increased by leaps and bounds since 2005. The increasing complexity of the income tax code has caused a corresponding increase in the cost of compliance, as well as the risk of violating it. If one has a complicated income structure, it requires only a detailed analysis of the income tax form to find errors and omissions. This, of course, makes everyone, with a complicated income tax structure, a criminal at the discretion of the wannabe tyrant. Since the IRS, like all of the bureaucracy, acts as prosecutor, policeman, judge and jury. An audit by the IRS can be an expensive and devastating experience. Even if the victim eventually prevails, the cost and effort required for the defense can be almost as distressing as losing.

It is a simple matter for a successful politician to cause the IRS to audit his political enemy. The investigation can be leaked to the press using preponderance of propaganda to demonize that enemy. Even the fear of an IRS audit can be used to extort political support from the entrepreneur or to benefit the wannabe tyrant’s political cronies. Chapter 10 of “21st CENTURY COMMON SENSE” has more about how Franklin D Roosevelt, Richard Nixon And other Presidents have used the IRS against their political enemies.

Many of the wannabe tyrant’s supporters are the technology challenged old industries that desire protection from the aggressive entrepreneur, with new technology.

The progressive income tax makes it very difficult for the entrepreneur to obtain capital to exploit the advanced technology. This protects the technology challenged from the entrepreneur. It may even forcing the entrepreneur into a partnership with the “technology challenged” established industry.

The income tax is a very expensive tax to administer. The cost of complying with the income tax code by the corporate taxpayer in 2005 was $0.24 (Tax Foundation Special Report) for every one dollar the government collected. This cost of compliance is especially onerous to the new or unprofitable business. This creates another barrier for the entrepreneur forcing the use of scarce resources for non-productive purposes. Considerable amount of executive talent is required for compliance with the income tax code preventing the use of that talent for productive purposes.

The “technology dividend” is a term used in the book, “21st Century Common Sense” to describe the reduction in labor and material content of the gross domestic product that results from advances in technology. The progressive income tax, a tax on productivity, is a direct assault on the “technology dividend”.

Because of the cost of compliance and the devastating effect on the “technology dividend” the real purpose of the progressive income tax cannot be to raise revenue for the government.

Those who advocate implementing the Fair Tax and scrapping the income and payroll taxes do so because they believe the Fair Tax will enhance the economy and of course, it would.

This argument is irrelevant to the wannabe tyrants because they are concerned only with their personal power. The wannabe tyrants will use every weapon in their arsenal to prevent the adoption of the Fair Tax System. http://commonsense21c.com/

At leaast these guys have a reason, and they get NO per diem, nor extra money for lodging while they are in D.C. NEW Congressmen didn’t get paid for a month, February, so everything came out of whatever money they started with. I guess BS-LSD missed Emmanuel, Geithner, all 41 aids, and almost every pick Obama hired into his administration.

There is one sure way of shutting down MSNBC. Do to them what they tried to do to Beck. Go after their advertisers. Email them and tell them you will not use their product/service as long as they continue to support radical programming by advertising in that time slot. Yes, it will work.

I have no problem with and I pay lots of taxes. I did have a problem with Clinton having sex in the oval office! Was Clinton a tax criminal or was he above the law. Hey, people we are a country of laws or we used to be but there are those that think the are above the law most are Dems but there are some Reps also.

MSNBC is still marching towards a record for the most money ever wasted on TV programming. Something tells me that even the iddiots that watch that channel squirmed a little just before they changed the channel.

I doubt he would show the same disdane to the Honorable Charles Rangle from the great state of NY? I think not. Pathetic, I agree someone should post a list of advertisers during his show. I will do some digging.

And this clown (O’Donnell) has the nerve to attack Glenn?! That was the biggest joke of an interview I have EVER watched.

Hey O’Donnell, why don’t you get a red nose, big red shoes, a multi-colored wig and a big bicycle horn to go with your personality. They all fit.

Hypocralyptic Deuchepocalypse!!! Anyone remember Rahm Emanuel?

Hey O’Donnell this is not something to attack. I guess you have to resort to this when you can’t debate the real issues.

What comes after jumping the shark?

The congressman should sue this jerk for Slander per se, accusing one of criminal activity is pure slander.

you guys over there at mslsd need to lay off the crack pipe and ripple wine . If you would only report the news like you were talking to normal americans instead of a bunch of hemp smoking commies you might keep an audience.
