MSNBC Host Snaps in Heated Segment: ‘What in the World Is Riskier Than Being a Poor Person in America?’

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry apologized for “losing [her] temper” Saturday morning after snapping at a panelist over the president’s “you didn’t build that” speech.
The panelist said the president neglected to mention the risks taken by entrepreneurs in his now-notorious speech, when Harris-Perry slammed her hand on the table to say the real risk is taken by the poor in America.
She demanded to know:
“What is riskier than living poor in America? Seriously! What in the world is riskier than being a poor person in America? I live in a neighborhood where people are shot on my street corner. I live in a neighborhood where people have to figure out how to get their kid into school because maybe it will be a good school and maybe it won’t. I am sick of the idea that being wealthy is risky. No! …Being poor is what is risky!
We have to create a safety net for poor people. And when we won’t, because they happen to look different from us, it is the pervasive ugliness.”
Watch the extremely heated exchange, below (skip to 8:16):
The commentator who provoked the reaction looked a little uncomfortable, while panelists who presumably agreed with Harris-Perry seemed sympathetic to her outburst.
“I’m sorry, but you know the whole notion of ‘job creators’…consumers are job creators,” comedian and CBS contributor Nancy Giles responded, after saying she agreed with Perry. “We’re the ones who make, the ones who help make, business, and who help make industry.”
There was little discussion of how dangerous it is to be poor in the rest of the world compared to in America, or of how objections to a bloated social safety net have nothing to do with how people look.
While MSNBC noted Harris-Perry’s apology, they also directed readers to her Facebook and Twitter pages where, they note, viewers were seemingly supportive of the rant.
“It’s up to you as to whether or not you wish to accept that apology,” they write.

Your premise is inherently flawed. You equate being rich with having no soul and/or being evil. THAT is the problem anymore, people like you chide success and striving for success. You claim it as evil and bad. Those people that worked hard and were successful should be emulated and people should strive to be like them, not demonize them. Your comment says much about how you feel and tells the rest of us that you are nothing but a lazy SOB and a taker. You want what everyone else has but you don’t want to do it yourself. You would rather depend on the government to give it to you. Which is exactly what should be demonized. The laziness and loathing from you speaks volumes.

It is a fiscal condition easily cured by getting to work and earning your own living without relying on others beyond your first paycheck. The harder you work, the further you get from poor. If you want to go for the really big bucks risk what you own and start your own business where you work for yourself and risk losing it all.

Posted on September 1, 2012 at 8:37pm@Ghost…YES finally somebody said it! To be poor in America is the equivalent of being wealthy in most of the world, where poor means that you live in a shantytown hut with no running water and often eat rats or bugs because that is all there is. The average “poor” in America have two color TV sets with one being a large flat-screen and every member of the family has a cell phone! They have at least one car and they eat out at least three times per week…it may be at McDonalds but its still eating out. they drink coke not water from the tap and eat meat every darn day. I am tired of hearing this pablum. the problems of the inner city have less to do with money and far more to do with a lack of morality!

Posted on September 2, 2012 at 9:05amSomebody once said, “I‘ve been rich and I’ve been poor. Rich is better.”
It’s a truism. That said, the notion that poor people have a right to demand a “safety net” from the government has not produced the results that our politicians routinely promise, starting with Lyndon Johnson. The Great Society ain’t, and it never has been, good at getting people out of poverty. Instead, it pays them to stay in poverty. That’s the damned shame of it, and a look at big city black communities confirms it.
Three generations of government money dumps have produced nothing but more misery and an endless cycle of povertythat is a national disgrace. Federal handouts may have helped some, but the price is a corrosive deterioration of community values and a constantly reinforced moral disincentive. Lord knows there are people who need help, and some of these problems are not of their making. Some people really need help, and I don’t begrudge the help they receive for a second.
But there’s something wrong with a system, for example, that penalizes a woman for actually being married and having a husband at home. There’s something wrong with a system that insists on higher and higher minimum wages, when the result is fewer and fewer minimum jobs. After three generations of programs like these, somebody ought to put away the racial hysteria and start asking some tough questions about whether there isn’t a better way to do things.

The Butchering of Gaddafi Is America’s Crime

“Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton appeared like ghoulish despots at a Roman Coliseum, reveling in their Libyan gladiators’ butchery.”
Last week the whole world saw, and every decent soul recoiled, at the true face of NATO’s answer to the Arab Spring. An elderly, helpless prisoner struggled to maintain his dignity in a screaming swirl of savages, one of whom thrusts a knife [4] up his rectum. These are Europe and America’s jihadis in the flesh. In a few minutes of joyously recorded bestiality, the rabid pack undid every carefully packaged image of NATO’s “humanitarian” project in North Africa – a horror and revelation indelibly imprinted on the global consciousness by the brutes’ own cell phones.
Nearly eight months of incessant bombing by the air forces of nations that account for 70 percent of the world’s weapons spending, all culminating in the gang-bang slaughter of Moammar Gaddafi, his son Mutassim and his military chief of staff, outside Sirte. The NATO-armed bands then displayed the battered corpses for days in Misurata – the city that had earlier made good on its vow to “purge Black skin” through the massacre and dispersal of 30,000 darker residents of nearby Tawurgha – before disposing of the bodies….

I owned a small printing company of 15 employees and was not able to save much as I put 6 children through private school and then helped 4 of them through college. The only way I could live halfway decent was to move to a country that I could survive on my social security. I am partially disabled and would be living in a cardboard box under a bridge on $15,000 a year. Here I live very well and you are right about the poor in America. They don’t know what poor is until they actually experience truly being poor in an emerging 3rd world country that has more freedom than the US. I was able to sell my 2,400 sq. ft home just before the crash and build a 900 square foot home in the DR. We have a flat tax here of 16% and that’s it. No tax, however on necessary food such as milk, bread, meat, veggies, butter etc, just on luxury items. The GDP here was 4.7% last year, almost 3 times the US. I am a 13% minority, but there is NEVER a question of color. 90 % of our friends are “Black” and they can’t understand why Black Americans call themselves “blacks” or “African American”. They think it a way to divide. I’ve been here 3 years and there is no way as a “White” person that I can express the love we have for each other, as there is no racial divide. If a person living paycheck to paycheck makes a bad investment, he doesn’t eat next month,
If a wealthy person makes a bad investment, he has tons more money to catch him.
When a limited resource is scarce, using it is inherently risky. When that same resource is abundant, people can be more carefree with their use of it. That is what is meant by RISK. Not “how much money can you stand to lose”, but “what happens to your life if your spending goes awry”
Wealthy people have very little risk. Plane and simple.

They were very clear on this subject because they had studied every Democracy in recorded history and saw that they all “murdered themselves!”
Our Founding Fathers and others speak out:
Benjamin Franklin: When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.
John Adams: Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.
Thomas Jefferson: A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%.
James Madison: Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death.

Forty-three percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.
Eighty percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)
Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.
Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Wait poor people actually live like this?
I cant even afford to live like that LOL
But that’s the irony of it….
For 2012 An average household income of just under 50k a year now. (Shrinking actually but about 46-47k+)
25% is gone for insurance and the governments share)
Remaining 37,500
BUDGET: LOW HIGH
House 6000 7200
Fuel 2400 5400
Util. 3600 6000
Prop Tax 1000 4000
Car Payment 3600 8400
Food 9000 18000
Gas+Extras 6000 6000
Maintence 3600 3600
School 30 50
35230 58650
37500 – 35230 = 2270
/12 = 189.16
/4.333 = 43.66 a week
And thats if its the low end…
Who is going out to eat? Who is going on vacations? Who is living it up?
Now lets look at the welfare leechs:
Free Rent, Free Heat, Free Lights, Free Food, Free Car, Free Maintence, Free HealthCare, Free Transportation, Free Attorneys
Total remaining every month, none, Why? they spend it all on concert tickets, drugs, going out to bars (when was the last time you could afford to go out for drinks and dancing?) and clothes for themselves while their kids starve in a corner wearing salvation army rags waiting for the state to call them back to take a look at them, see them “struggling” and get more handouts.
The thought that these freeloaders get so much for doing nothing is truly frustrating

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 3:02pmThis is the most ridiculous claim I have ever heard. Most of us do not like welfare because it is NOT EFFECTIVE. It is actually destructive not constructive. Instead of helping people learn to take care of themselves it turns them into dependent unproductive citizens. BSNBC can do all the misinformation campaigns they want but most of us are figuring this out on there own. We should help them out of poverty NOT CAUSE THEM TO BECOME UNABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES.
Report Post »If Welfare actually worked the program would virtually eliminate itself over time. The fact that it continues to grow is factual evidence that this program is a failure. We have a safety net, it is in fact a net that traps people, it doesn’t produce upward mobility.
We need to change the voting requirements in a way that would make it impossible for these progressives to exploit the poor by purchasing their votes. Any person who receives entitlements (SSI and medicare are not entitlements) for more than 6 months during an election year should be unable to vote. this will cause a furor by the progressives, but it is necessary to deny corrupt politicians the opportunity to exploit the poor. Think of the benefits to the poor and to society as a whole if politicians were REQUIRED to help people become productive citizens in order to earn their vote.

The clip was just over 10 minutes in length and the number of times someone lied was 24 times. So, in just 10 minutes these folks managed to tell a lie every 25 seconds. Everyone on the panel except Monica told at least two lies. So if you take that average and stretch it over a 12 hour period that would be 1,800 LIES EVERY TWELVE HOURS ON MSNBC! (not counting commericals). That is why their viewership is in the tank and they came in last place in ratings during the RNC convention. Also, Melissa Harris-Perry makes $750,000 for MSNBC and $200,000 as a professor ($950.000 total) and does not live in a bad neighborhood as she claims. She lives in a wealthy community. How much does she PERSONALLY give the poor in time and donations? About the same as Biden and Gore (less than 1%). So, if judged by the Ten Commandments, she’s a lying – Blasphemer – murderer (Jesus said to hate is committing murder in your heart) and that’s only three of the ten commandments. I don’t hate her but she does trigger a mean migraine.

Posted on September 2, 2012 at 1:32amHello Rose. First, it is spelled “information.” But I will let that one slide because we love you. Secondly, to “lie” and to “bear false witness” is the same thing (see the Bible). Third, you may be correct that a portion of the panel’s lies could have been ignorance and not dishonesty. However, if you type in each panelist‘s name and view their history you’ll find they repeat the same lies over and over. Why? Look up Sal Alinsky‘s rules or Paul Joseph Goebbels’ quotes. As for “murder” I suggest you revisit my original message. Jesus said that to “hate” is to commit murder already in your heart. I know Perry’s track record of hate and racism, I‘ve watched the videos and I’ve researched the articles. Hearing her on tape using blasphemy (which is using God, the one who gave her life, as a cuss word) is another violation of the Ten Commandments. You are correct to say we should not judge, however, God intended the Ten Commandments to act as a “mirror” so we can see why we need Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Since I have only a few characters left, passages (4-1)(4-7)(6-5)(7:1-5)(8:8-9)(9-1) of yours need to be corrected. You do not sound like an evil person so I’ll assume ignorance. If you can get over 95% on accuracy (I’m being generous), I’ll welcome you to the big leagues. In the mean time………

My problem is that the vast majority of the poor are in this position because of conscious decisions they made. Usually many poor decisions over many years. Posted on September 1, 2012 at 6:34pmI am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.

Posted on September 2, 2012 at 9:04pmI don’t know if George auditions people for the left wing news channels, but I do know Melissa will be up for an academy award nomination for her performance. The concern, the heart felt worry she showed for the poor. The only thing missing were the phony tears. Melissa is correct, being poor is risky, but then being alive is risky. Getting in a car and driving around town is risky. However, there‘s nothing riskier than being in a room with Melissa after she’s eaten a bean burrito at Chipolte. If the blast don’t kill you, the pyroclastic cloud of super heated gas and accompanying stench will. My question is what has Melissa done to help the poor. Does she give them shelter, feed them, help them in any way, or is her rant just a load of Melissa.
Someone who has her address needs to make it public with the open invitation to ‘pan handlers’ all across the nation to send her cash requests in order that she may send them western union money grams and food packages. I‘m sure she’d be thankful. I know she can’t wait to really help, though so far it appears all she’s done is feed everyone a load of crap.

Posted on September 1, 2012 at 6:33pmShe is right, there is a real risk of living a life based solely on Welfare, food stamps and Nike tennis shoes. The government may not always be there to provide for that…especially if they keep making policies that destroy those who pay the taxes

Posted on September 1, 2012 at 6:32pmI”ll tell you what’s riskier, trying to start a business when your fraud president is a Marxist POS who has a war on capitalism.People are poor in America in large part because the democrat party has told the black community you aren’t smart enough to succeed on your own so you need government to support you.The high crime rate in the inner city is also because the federal government requires black families to be broken up to receive unconstitutional welfare.
I suspect the poor in Calcutta is quite different than the poor in America.

Posted on September 1, 2012 at 7:02pmI couldn’t agree more …A “New age progressive communist” such as a Obama needs that “poor” group ..That is his base…Letting them free of the government dependency …means he will loose his base…A modern Communist like a Obama whats to achieve his central government control with human and business rules, regulations ..Instead of using machine guns and ditches His idea of putting a damper to capitalism, and the free spirit of the individual is in full swing..You look at those blighted areas and you see the effects of their plan ..These “New age Progressive communists” like a Obama today want the stop of growth ..They want people to be forced to into urban areas and controlled, and regulated …Our economic engine today is running at idle because of this ….Obama and the communist that flew in the door with him need to go come November …
