MSNBC Panel: Racist Republicans Want to ‘Lure’ White Working Class Voters by Using ‘Dog-Whistle’ Politics

The latest non-controversy surrounding a GOP presidential hopeful involves a moment where Rick Santorum allegedly said, “I don‘t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them someone else’s money.”

As a result of this supposedly “racist” comment, some political pundits at MSNBC are convinced that, whether he meant to or not, Rick Santorum is engaged in a covert Republican operation to “lure…white working class“ voters by using racist ”dog-whistle” politics.

“Joan, are you buying [Santorum’s] answer at this point?” MSNBC host Ed Shultz asked Salon.com editor Joan Walsh.

“This really is the kind of dog-whistle politics that the Republican party has used to lure our people, the white working class, over to their party, to tell them over and over that money’s being — their money’s being given to black people when in fact, as we all know, it’s been given to rich people,” Joan Walsh, editor of Salon magazine, said.

However, if you watch the former Pennsylvania Senator make the allegedly “racist” comment, it’s clear that he simply mumbled his words:

“I‘m pretty confident I didn’t say `black,’” Santorum said, responding to critics who have accused him of racism. “I’ve looked at it several times. I was starting to say one word and I sort of came up with a different word and then moved on.”

Indeed, if one examines the remark within the context it was made, using the word “blacks” makes about as much sense as using the word “spatulas.“ There is nothing in his presentation that precludes a focus on ”blacks” nor are there any subsequent remarks that would have made this comment make any sense. If Santorum did indeed use the word “blacks,” it would mean that — in front of dozens of cameras and potential voters — he decided suddenly to abandon his speech in order to inject a racially-charged non sequitur–something far more difficult to believe than a simple case of mumbling.

For some reason, this hasn’t occurred to several pundits at MSNBC.

“Michael, you buy Santorum’s excuse and is this going to be a problem for him?” Shultz asked MSNBC political analyst Michael Eric Dyson

“I don’t buy it at all. I think Joan is absolutely right. Not only is it ‘dog-whistle’ politics, it’s the politics of divisive, cynical, Republican ideology here,” Dyson said. “Because if you’re talking about government funding through tax dollars, you’re talking about social security, Medicaid, Medicare, veteran’s benefits, you’re speaking about unemployment benefits, bailouts for corporations and the like, and — as Joan said — the redistribution of money upwards to rich people. So why in the world would you single out African American people who are a small percentage of those who receive the benefits?”

Could the answer be that he simply didn’t?

    To me it sounds like he’s saying ” …to make lives people lives better…” Which is just a common double grammatical error when speaking to an audience. But that’s just my opinion.

      I think Santorum purposefully singled out blacks in a racist way, but noticed what he was saying and stopped himself because it’s not socially acceptable in public settings. Just like when Newt says that blacks need paychecks instead of food stamps. That is dog whistle politics! The subtext is that blacks are lazy and dependent upon “welfare”. “They” (blacks) are freeloaders sucking down welfare while “we” (whites) pay for their welfare.

      Making divisive racial ploys has an official name in Republican circles… “The Southern Strategy”… and it began under Nixon in the 1970s after the Civil Rights Act forcibly ended Jim Crow. Conservative politicians attempt to lure white (primarily Southern) voters by playing on negative racial stereotypes, such as blacks are lazy and mooch off welfare.

      Welfare was reformed in 1996 by Newt, Santorum, and Clinton and welfare rolls are at HISTORIC LOWS!!! You have to work 30 hours per week in order to get welfare benefits. Welfare to work programs! America has much LESS welfare now than in decades past. FEWER blacks are on welfare today than in decades past. Welfare reform!

Sorry if you cannot accept that welfare was indeed reformed in 1996 by Newt, Santorum, and Clinton and now welfare recipients are required to work at least 30 hours per week. Also welfare benefits have a 5 year time limit! That is why it is called TEMPORARY Assistance to Needy Families!

      Since Welfare Reform was passed in 1996, welfare rolls have DECLINED DRAMATICALLY!!! Many FEWER people get welfare checks and there is much LESS long-term dependency! They talk about Welfare Reform in every Republican debate because they all want to take credit for reforming the welfare system and reducing welfare rolls!!! Santorum and Newt bring it up all the time. Welfare to Work programs are the norm… That is the actual truth.

      The truth is that white people make up the majority of food stamp participants. Food stamps is a majority white program and mostly used by desperate white families to keep food on the table during times of recession! Plus, Newt/Santorum reformed the welfare system in 1996 requiring work in exchange for welfare benefits. Welfare benefits are also time-limited at 5 years. There are many FEWER welfare checks being distributed because of Welfare Reform in the 1990s!

      MILS: There are no work requirements for food stamps but if you want a welfare check, you must be working 30 hours per week! I wonder if you know people on disability?? SSI is for disabled people and there are no work requirements. But the fact still stands that under Welfare Reform passed by Newt/Santorum/Clinton that welfare mothers must work in exchange for benefits!

      Pragmatica, let me make this easy for you: I am a racist by the progressive/liberal definition. I‘m glad I’m a racist and here’s why. I live in a suburb of Detroit. Detroit and every predominantly black/mexican city in Michigan is under control or about to be under control of an emergency financial manager appointed by the state. Every one of the same cities has been or is in the midst of massive corruption or scandal. Amazingly, everytime the blacks in those cities have the chance to elect someone with half a brain they don’t. Why? Because if the want to upset the apple cart of crime and corruption and blacks preying on blacks, they are labelled an “Uncle Tom” even if he/she is black. When blacks have control of a city they destroy it. Thats not opinion, its fact. Then they blame everyone else and when we tell them to clean up their own mess we are called racist. So, if it means being called a racist to say I don’t want blacks to come to my city and destroy it like the others they have/are, then call me a racist. BTW, I agree with Santorum, I don’t want to make anyones life better by giving them other peoples money, it’s called redistribution of wealth and its wrong.       But Clinton DID sign it into law! He was part of the Welfare Reform process! Clinton at the State of the Union said we are “going to end welfare as we know it”! He may not have been as supportive as Newt and Santorum but Clinton was definitely receptive to Welfare Reform and signed it into law! You have to admit that Welfare Reform has shrunk the welfare rolls tremendously. Many FEWER people receive welfare checks but Newt and Santorum still associate blacks with laziness and welfare dependency. These conservatives are making subtle racial connections to negative stereotypes and that is wrong in my book. They completely ignore a history of slavery, Jim Crow laws, isolated ghetto neighborhoods (suburbanization shifting economic resources away from inner-city), discrimination, etc…

      There’s 50 million+ people on welfare… AND MOST OF THEM ARE WHITE!

      Can’t get around this fact. Now of course, some troll will point out that there’s more blacks on welfare per percentage of population they represent, but the facts are still the facts.

      Now maybe if Ben Bernanke wasn’t giving billions to banks, corporate-owned news outlets, and secret foreigners, while Gingrich, Santorum, Beck, and others supported it… and demonizing Ron Paul who tries to reign in the Federal Reserve…

      Maybe there would be some JOBS to be had somewhere for people… some FIRST jobs- let alone second and third like some self-segregated suburbanite said… because maybe the banks would be lending to small businesses instead of sitting on all of MY money that Ben Berflaky gave them.

      Black people don’t tear neighborhoods up. Part of the reason neighborhoods like East Cleveland are so decrepit is because of WHITE FLIGHT from people who just don’t want to be around minorities at all taking their taxes with them and then pointing a finger from the outside looking in.

      What about slumlords and house flippers? Rich Floridian got arrested here (Cleveland) for doing just that.

      Talk about blacks voting in corrupt idiots, a lot of white folks have voted in a lot of corrupt congresspersons who just voted to say EFF your constitution with the NDAA bill.

      Welfare is NOT just a check each month, and is not all from the government. There is section 8 housing, Utilities, Medicaid, Medicare, Free School Breakfast, Lunch and now Supper, plus weekend food in a backpack, this is over and above FOOD STAMPS. They get rent support, even FREE CELL PHONE AND SERVICE, reduced and free car insurance, in the South that is the UNINSURED MOTORIST you pay for. The feds charge FEES to the phone, power & gas companies these fees get passed on to the PAYING CUSTOMERS.So all this “White Guilt” Pays off handsomely to the welfare mooches in large wads of DISPOSABLE CASH! So in the South we have a larger population of WELFARE MOOCHES than other parts of the country (rural and cities big and small) the other parts of the country they are in the large cities. And yes Marge they are not ALL black, but between them and the illegals they make up the MAJORITY!

      Bubbasc, VERY WELL SAID!! you hit the nail on the head, most of these bleeding heart liberals don‘t have any idea what it’s like to live next to these people.

      They all live in a gated community and go to the soup kitchen once a month and hand out food and think they know what they are talking about. They need to live with these people then they would get a real taste.

      I lived in a large city in Arizona that has ten’s of thousands of illegals and a large black population and believe me come the first of the month they all get their government checks head to the stores to spend them.

      I am disabled and could get SSI if i wanted to but i still work, but it makes me sick when i go to the store and see all the Blacks and Mexicans with their gold chains around their necks paying for their food with a hand full of wick checks and food stamp cards only to walk out side and see them drive off in a brand new Cadillac while i am still working, paying tax’s and driving a 25 year old pickup truck.

      So i guess that feeling of discuss i get seeing this would make me a racist in the eyes of the left for not wanting to see my hard earned tax dollars wasted on a bunch of low life‘s who just don’t want to work and live pretty well off of gaming the system, but you know what i am okay with that, i’ll be a raciest in the eyes of the left, but at least i pay my own way in life.

      Here is my problem with the MSNBC story…..it is really getting annouying that republicans are still being accused of being racist. Most Americans today are not racists…republicans or democrats!!! The truth is I work hard for my money and do not want to give it away to anyone who is lazy and think they are entitled; white, black or of any race. I am working to save money to give it to my children not to someone who thinks they do not have to work and can live off my hard earned income while they stay at home and play video games and watch tv all day. This tactic is ridiculous. Time to move on to another tactic to entice voters to not vote for a conservative or republican.

All states have seen dramatic decreases in welfare rolls since 1996! Welfare-to-Work programs have put many welfare mothers to work in low-income employment, and welfare benefits are time limited! Benefits are TEMPORARY! Food Stamps and SSI Disability is still around, but “welfare checks” to low-income mothers are few and far between these days!

      @ Pragmatica for too long people like you have operated the dog whistle politics of “only whites can be racist” What are we to derive from your comments and links? As wikipedia is such a undisputed leader in authoritative facts and knowledge, we know that anything displayed there is totally unbiased and 100% truth.(sarcasm) Give us some examples from official .gov sites instead.
      Let’s do this. Suppose that 100 represents the U.S. population as whole and whites make up 80% and blacks (since these are the only two in your examples) make up 20%. If only 10 percent of the population is enrolled in any kind of welfare, then, a proportionate number would be 8 whites and 2 blacks on welfare. On the other hand if 6 are white and 4 are black, then we have a problem. Certainly (in our example) there are more whites on welfare than blacks overall, it may well be the same in real life,we won’t know unless we visit a real source of information. I really want to know the truth, so please get back with me on this.

      NOT2BHERD: African Americans make up 23% of the Food Stamp rolls but only 13% of the total population population. Blacks do disproportionately receive Food Stamps by 10% points (13% of the population but 23% of Food Stamp rolls). But that still means that MOST blacks do not receive any government assistance. Also, blacks have been disadvantaged and discriminated against historically. The Civil Rights Act was only passed in 1964, so blacks have not been free very long and still face hardships that most whites do not. They live in economically and socially isolated ghetto neighborhoods, have low-wage service sector jobs, attend the worst schools, breath the most pollution, have the lowest rates of health insurance. A disproportionate amount of blacks receive food stamps because their is a disproportionate amount of legitimate need.

      exactly, that‘s why it’s time for conservatives to band together. We need the “WE WANT YOU” campaign and show people of all nationalities and religions that are conservative. I don’t care what religion someone is or what they do in their house, as long as it doesn’t interupt my peace or the peace of the neighborhood.

      We need the tea party or republican party to show blacks, asians, whites, latinos, gays, whatever that are conservative. They shouldn’t be scared to associate with their conservative values.

The left tries to paint this picture of those who are capitalists and who only wish for their own individual capitalism as those who are against the ethnicity or background of those who benefit from what the government hands them.     These people are calling 200million American people racist losers, too bad only 40million of us actually vote. So I am personally taking four guys with me and my wife to vote. They weren’t going to vote until I hounded them and hounded them, finally they gave in and said they would go… so I am going to pick them up and take them to vote. If everyone would take just two people who are too busy or too unmotivated to vote then we would crush these losers like the cretins that they are. No voter left behind. Vote pooling. Do it take a friend to vote year.

    No… white voters, as well as any other color of truly informed and aware voter, is going to vote for the lesser of the evils in the next election. Sadly, there isn’t much real choice on the Republican side, but considering who will be running for re-election on the Democrat side, you can pretty much smell the evil there.
