MSNBC‘s Andrea Mitchell Doesn’t Apologize for Taking Romney Out of Context — Plays More of Clip Instead

You can’t even call this half-hearted.

Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday did not apologize for heavily editing a clip of Mitt Romney (hear her original edit here) talking about a Wawa gas station at a recent campaign stop. Instead, she made an excuse, saying she didn’t get a “chance” to play the whole thing on Monday and played more of the clip to try and soften the blow meant to portray him as out of touch:

The clip Mitchell played Tuesday does offer a little more context, but it should be noted that Mitchell — after laughing at it yesterday — did not take the time to explain the full context: Romney was discussing how private enterprise is more efficient than government. Watch the full version below:

And all this raises the question: If it was simply a case of Mitchell not having the “chance” to play the full clip on Monday, then why did she even play it in the first place? If the point was to have a fair discussion on Romney and his statements, then there would be no question that she and her team would have played the full clip and given the context.

But I think we know the points wasn’t a fair discussion. It was to get a cheap laugh and mock the former governor. And they achieved their goal.

This time they just got caught.

UPDATE: The folks over at MRC TV have done the work of playing Mitchell’s edited video alongside the actual one. After seeing it, you decide if she did justice by only playing the small, extra clip she did:

This story has been updated.

The distortion is disgraceful. After the election, we need to expose the vermin and dismiss them from true media. If you don’t report the facts, you shouldn’t be on the air. Not through sponsor boycotts or FCC license regulation. Just constantly show the lies and let the embarrassment destroy their will. The people trying to change this trend still have hope. Here is the true quote that counts:
“People in the private sector have learned to compete and it’s time to bring some competition to the Federal Government and to get it smaller, and have them respond to the customers, which are YOU!!”

Isn’t there some sort of equal time laws for broadcasters, when networks promote one candidate over another they must give equal time to the other? I thought I heard that somewhere. Maybe if Romney was a good businessman he would have lawyers all over that.

The general premise that private industry is always more efficient than government or related entities is a myth. A great Republican sound bite, at best, and rarely supported by anything other than an example the individual has used for years. For those who believe in the myth please do some research and explain to me why garbage collection is now $35 a month, when it was provide free to my parents when they were paying less than $1,000 per year in local taxes. Also research local parochial or private high schools. The ones in our region are $12,000 per year, while the average public high school spends just under $9,000 per student. Clearly, the steel industry and the auto industry are not good examples of efficiency. And let’s not forget to consider the cost to the person receiving the service or product, which includes the profit and taxes and not merely the cost of making or providing the service. The world is more complex than 30 sec. sound bites.

Jrookey, In case you haven’t noticed, all of the industries you mention are union dominated. It shouldn‘t be a surprise to anyone with half a brain why these industries don’t run well and are expensive. As for the schools, I don’t think there is a person out there that thinks their kid is getting what they are paying for in publis schools, so in my opinion that’s a bad example (don’t forget they are union dominated as well).

Jrook, really? Garbage collection costs have gone up precisely because they are run by the city or county. Public pensions cost you know. Govt. programs do not have to be as efficient because they are always backed up by more tax dollars. Private companies succeed or go out of business, there is no fallback position. In terms of the cost of schools, the public schools in my area are substantially cheaper per student than the private. Of course what you fail utterly to consider is the quality of the education. If I wanted my son to sit in a class with little to no academic accountability with 25 plus other kids I would surely send him to the local public school. Instead I pony up the money so he can actually learn something and the teacher to student ratio is 8 to 1. If you break it down in terms of that same ratio then it is significantly cheaper in terms of attention provided than the public school, which, sadly my tax dollars also fund. So please listen to your own advice and don‘t spout off sound bites in a lame attempt to sound like you know what you’re talking about. I would gladly pay my tax dollars to a private company that does a better job any day.

Most of my time working with the govmt was while i was in college, and it was my experinces working their that turned me from a democrat to becoming a republican to a conservative to a libertarian.

Also your school figures seemed skewed did you go with the highest private school you could find in your area. Also using waste disposal is a bad example although it has been privatized it has been very corupted in many cities by govmt, by not allowing competetion.

You wrote: “The general premise that private industry is always more efficient than government or related entities is a myth.”

No, not always more efficient, but if the inefficiency is too onerous to the customer, they go elsewhere and the industry either figures out how to become more efficient or dies – lessons not learned by the USPS, public school systems, and myriad other gov’t agencies. Significantly, the only cases I can think of that seem to violate this maxim of business are those industries tightly intertwined with some federal or local gov’t agency (FCC, FAA, municipal gov’t, etc).

“Also research local parochial or private high schools. The ones in our region are $12,000 per year, while the average public high school spends just under $9,000 per student.”

And in many communities, public education is so abysmal that people figure it’s worth the higher price tag.
