MSNBC‘s Bashir Slams Mormonism’s ‘Racially-Segregated’ History & Defends Obama Against Black Liberation Theology Claims

Martin Bashir Slams Mormonisms Racial History & Defends ObamaMSNBC‘s Martin Bashir is no stranger to invoking Mitt Romney’s faith when discussing and analyzing the 2012 presidential race. Last month, the television host issued an excoriating rant during which he used the Book of Mormon to warn Romney of “eternal damnation.”

On Thursday afternoon, while diving into a controversial Super PAC proposal, Bashir invoked alleged racial issues associated with Romney’s Mormon faith — an odd action, considering that Romney wasn’t involved in the noted proposal (earlier in the day, the candidate also renounced proposed tactics that would tie Obama to Wright).

(Related: MSNBC‘s Bashir Uses Book of Mormon to Warn Romney of ’Eternal Damnation’ for Alleged Lies)

This afternoon, The Blaze reported about a proposal by the conservative Super PAC Ending Spending Action Fund that has now been scrapped to invoke Rev. Jeremiah Wright in a 2012 television campaign. While lambasting the document, which was first reported on by The New York Times, Bashir unleashed his angst to his guest Joan Walsh.

“Joan, do Republicans really want to start talking about religious influence on candidates? Do they really want to start talking about Mitt Romney, who’s part of a religious group that has been one of the most racially-segregated in the history of this country?,” Bashir asked. “Until the late 1970s, African Americans, people of color, couldn’t be ordained. Does he really want us to start talking about his grandfather, who had five wives or his great, great grandfather who had 12 wives and was a Mormon. Is that what they want to do?”

Martin Bashir Slams Mormonisms Racial History & Defends Obama

To begin, Bashir’s initial comments are referring to restrictions that once existed within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As The Blaze has previously reported, in 1978, the church issued an official declaration following prayer and meditation that overturned the priesthood restrictions that once disallowed African American men from participating. A portion of the written description of the revelation read:

Aware of the promises made by the prophets and presidents of the Church who have preceded us that at some time, in God’s eternal plan, all of our brethren who are worthy may receive the priesthood, and witnessing the faithfulness of those from whom the priesthood has been withheld, we have pleaded long and earnestly in behalf of these, our faithful brethren, spending many hours in the Upper Room of the Temple supplicating the Lord for divine guidance.

He has heard our prayers, and by revelation has confirmed that the long-promised day has come when every faithful, worthy man in the Church may receive the holy priesthood, with power to exercise its divine authority, and enjoy with his loved ones every blessing that flows therefrom, including the blessings of the temple. Accordingly, all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color. Priesthood leaders are instructed to follow the policy of carefully interviewing all candidates for ordination to either the Aaronic or the Melchizedek Priesthood to insure that they meet the established standards for worthiness.

Relations between African Americans and the Mormon church have been evolving and improving since this statement was issued. In a June 2011 New York Times article, Harvard University religion student Max Perry Mueller (he’s writing a dissertation on African-Americans and the Mormon church) said that the church has “made a very sincere effort” to include blacks.

Martin Bashir Slams Mormonisms Racial History & Defends Obama

Earlier this year, two black members of the church released a four-part DVD series that explains misconceptions as well as the history behind these policies. Bashir, of course, made no mention of any of these elements.

As for the allegation that Mitt Romney’s grandfather had five wives, this is inaccurate. Back in 2007, The Associated press reported:

Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.

Romney’s great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she “used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow” over her own husband’s multiple marriages.

Romney’s great-great grandfather, Parley Pratt, an apostle in the church, had 12 wives. In an 1852 sermon, Parley Pratt’s brother and fellow apostle, Orson Pratt, became the first church official to publicly proclaim and defend polygamy as a direct revelation from God.

Nowhere here is Romney’s grandfather mentioned, as it seems Bashir confused “grandfather” with “great-grandfather.” In the end, as The Blaze has highlighted, both Barack Obama and Romney have a family history of polygamy, but neither candidate supports the institution (nor do they have contemporary family members who engage in it).

Walsh responded to Bashir’s intense rhetoric by dismissing the proposed Super PAC plan as “hate porn.” Later in the segment, the host defended Obama against charges that he has promoted Black Liberation Theology.

“John, what seems most ridiculous about this particular playbook is that we’ve seen the president up close for the best part of four years,” he proclaimed. “Have you ever heard him promote Black Liberation Theology?”

If you look back into history you will find that almost all churches had some type of segregation. I mean in the 1800′s it was almost unheard of blacks going to white churches or whites going to black churches. In fact it was until like the early 60′s did things change.

That is not true. Do you have a GBTV account? All this was covered some time ago but, is still a common belief in modern society because of the Progressives running our schools. They have rewritten History to further their goals. David Barton also covered this subject on GBTV. Here are a few facts that you can research.

1- The US Gov and US Military was integrated (racially) until Woodrow Wilson took office as POTUS. He segregated the US Gov and the US Military.

2- The first Black Congressman was in the 1700′s.

3- Churches were integrated in the 1700′s and those that sought to segregate them lost that battle.

4- The first slave owner in the US was a Black Man who went to court to sue to have an indentured servant be a permanently indentured servant and thus, a slave.

5- Black males fought for the Union in the US Civil War in the 1860′s.

6- The Civil Rights Act was stopped in the late 1950′s by LBJ (for political reasons) yet he signed it into Law in 1964 as POTUS (for political reasons).

There is a lot more and please excuse me if I have a few dates “generalized” without the exact Month and Year. They are close enough since you have been taught that Blacks have had no rights until the 1960′s.

Good luck in your research. Also, if you have a GBTV account you can use the calendar to go back and watch the archives.

At least back in the days of Polygamy, the Mormans had the decency to get married to the mothers of their children.

Now days the libs just promote the hit-and-run form of family, leaving it to the tax payers and abortion clinics to “take care” of their 10 knocked up women and off-spring.

That is another form of polygamy without any responsibility or consequences for the men. Who has a “War on Women” and children?

I love Glen and his political insights, but I have to point out a few things on his rant to defend mormonism. Plural marriage was a doctrine of the mormon church that Joseph Smith said was a revelation from God. It was NOT some sort of necessity due to a lack of mormon men. When there was paligamy in the Bible it was NEVER part of God‘s plan but was part of man’s sinful nature. What will Romney do the first time a reporter askes him if he is wearing his “garments” that are supposed to protect him from physical and physical harm? What will he say about the mormon teaching that he is eternally married to Ann, and it is his role to grant her the resurection to eternal life? As a former mormon, I could go on and on with these false doctrines not supported by the one and only source of authority to man, the Bible! I do support Romney…..reluctantly…..but his religious background is difficult to get past and the liberal media will have a field day with the absolutly absurd teachings of the mormon faith.

Actually, in the old testament when Nathaniel came to David to confront him with the sins that he commited with Bathsheeba (sp?) he stated that the Lord had given David Sauls wives among other things. So if the Lord gave David wives (plural) how is it that He does not condone plural marraige? The truth is, if God authorizes a plural marraige, it is rightous, it is when men take wives unto themselves that it is not. Abraham had 2 wives but he was a friend of God. I think it was Jacob (can’t remember, don’t have a Bible in front of me) who was tricked into marrying Rachels sister then 7 years later he married Rachel too. He was the father of the 12 tribes of Israel. Obviously he was in pretty good standing with God.

When it comes to the LDS faith there is never a specific reason why polygomy was allowed, but there are many theories. One is that it allowed families to be joined together for eternity, many women and children needed a provider to cross the plains. These are just 2 of the theories I have heard. Regardless of the reason, there were strict guidelines that had to be followed. 1. a person had to be called to take more than one wife, they could not just choose to do it. 2. they had to be able to support the wives. 3. they had to have the permission of their current wife (or wives) before they were allowed to. There were more but I cannot remember off the top of my head. The fact is that many of the men did not even sleep with anyone other than their original wife. Yes, many did sleep with them too. But the fact is every time someone thinks of polygamy, the first theing they think of is s ex. That was not the case in many, if not all of the plural marraiges that took place.

ALMOST ALL is quite a stretch. Churches that taught Scripture based on the theology of John Calvin, had racism built into it. Many Southern U.S. churches followed his teachings, and so segregation/racism was institutionalized , by them. Mormonism also taught about the inferiority of “Blacks”. Of course Mormonism also teaches Jesus Christ, and satan were Spiritual BROTHERS. This HERESY is only one of MANY in the Mormon theology.

Bashir is a religious bigot and there is NO difference between religious bigotry and racism, both of these character traits come from the same place in the mind and the heart.

      On Polygamy–
      Abraham had multiple wives
3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. (Old Testament | Genesis 16:3)

      So Did David
2 And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel. 3 ¶ And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters. (Old Testament | 1 Chronicles 14:2 – 3)

So there are times when ‘God has “authorized” polygamy.

As for this nonsense regarding it being heresy that Jesus and Satan are brothers, if it is heresy to believe that God is the Father/Creator of both Jesus and Satan then OK, it is heresy to believe that in the sense that they have the same Father they are brothers. If God did NOT create Satan, then how did Satan come to exist?

That’s not exactly true, there were black preachers in the 1700′s here in America and they were mixed congregations as well. It really wasn’t until just before and during and after the Civil War that the Democrats kept segregation alive and well and basically kept the blacks down on the farm for political reasons.
Most of those in the South who were fighting for segregation and against the ***** being free were your good ole boy Democrats, and they have been trying to keep them down ever since with entitlements that do nothing to raise them up off the so called “farm/slave” mentality. They have kept them as slaves through entitlements. Mormons were somewhat racist 20 years ago. Obama and the DOJ are 2008 – May 2012 racists.

The real issue while we sort out dirty clothes is the house burning down. Bush started the fire and Obama threw gas. We need a citizens court to try maybe up to 1,000 public servants and hirerees for Constitutional treason in Washington. The citizens need to clean house with criminal trials.
Anyone not found guilty can be put in a FEMA camp under the NDAA indefinitely for mind retraining.

Mormons and Muslims have at least TWO things in common

    1. Polygamy (both Romney/Obama fathers and grandfathers etc are polygamists.
    2. Neither religion had anything to do with the founding of our country or Constitution
    3. Both religions were “founded” well after Christianity
    4. Both religions are creepy

I RELUCTANTLY will vote for Shxty Mitty not because he is a conservative because he is NOT – but because he is less awful than Obama.

BUT, Romney is WIMPING OUT on attacking Obama on Rev Wright and other issues while Obama RIPS Romney (and before him McCain) a new one so it doesn’t matter. Romney will lose if he runs the same Obama is a nice guy and don’t pick on him campaign just like his progressive RINO co-hort McCain did.

Muslims have much more in with Christian beliefs: ONE GOD (Allah/Christ). ONLY ONE religious book (Bible/Koran). and neither believe after they die they continue to have “spirit babies” and neither believe that after death they continue to evolve to be good enough to become a god themselves.

It is CLEAR you know nothing about Mormons and their History. OR… shall I say Christian fundamentalists. The work the Mormon Pioneers did to settle most of the SW was crucial for this country. Back then it was called the Utah Territory and was considered part of Mexico. If you remember… the Mormon Battalion marched with US during the Mexican American war. Here is what Joseph Smith said about the Constitution… http://www.latterdayconservative.com/quotes/joseph-smith/ . @Lameliberal..time to fact check your comments. 1. false…neither his father or grandfather were polygamists. Just read the article. 2. Misdirection – No particular religion had anything to do with the founding of this country or the Constitution. Yes most involved were adherents to Judeo-Christian theology, but you cannot attribute any specific church or religion to the founding. Why do you think the Constitution has an amendment preventing Congress from establishing a state religion? 3. False (depending on how you look at it) as Mormons believe their religion is a restoration of the original Church of Jesus Christ. 4. Your own personal biased opinion.

@Mutiny..do we really have to go there? You really are going to play the “You don‘t interpret the Bible like I do so you can’t play in my sandbox of Christianity?” Who made you or your pastor/church the ultimate authority on Biblical understanding? @ Mutiny, Lame, & other uninformed individuals.

You raise some very good points Mutiny Since you are not the only one with these concerns I’d like to take some time to address them.

You stated that “Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers” sounds blasphemous, doesn’t it. Mutiny, the fact is we believe God is the Father of all of us, the Father of our Spirits, and that we are all spirit siblings to one another as well as to Jesus, God’s Firstborn Spirit, and a spirit named Lucifer, who became Satan.

To explain this, let’s start with our belief that life is like a three-act play:

Act One: Our pre-earthly existence. We lived with God, the Father of our spirits. We grew, we learned, we progressed. Our lives did not begin at our earthly birth.

Act Two: Our earthly existence. Here we gained a body subject to pain and death, which fits in with the belief of 87% of all Americans that the human being consists of two parts, a body and a spirit or soul, the body being the house of the spirit. We are given agency to make decisions for ourselves. We experience trials and temptations in a world where things go wrong. From such we learn to recognize the good from the evil and are tested to see if we will obey God’s commandments. To make it a valid test, our memory of Act One is erased.

Act Three: Life after death. When at death our spirit leaves our body, we will live in a spirit world until the day of resurrection when our spirits will be reunited with our bodies, glorified and incapable of sickness, pain, or death. We will then be judged and rewarded according to our actions on earth.
For centuries people have wrestled with a seeming conundrum. If God is the Creator of everything in the universe, does this mean He created evil?

We (“Mormons”) tend to approach this question with a seemingly simple proposition: there must be opposition in all things. A few examples:

Could anything be identified as sweet if it’s opposite, bitterness did not exist?

Would we understand hot if we did not know cold?

Would we recognize energy if we didn’t know fatigue?

Would there be love if there were no hate?

If something does not have an opposite, it cannot exist. All things are defined not only by what they are, but what they are not. So it is with good and evil. Good cannot exist without evil as its defining opposite. And evil exist because good as always existed. (The Star Wars series got it closer than most people may realize—there must be a good side and a dark side of existence.)

Therefore, when people ask whether God created evil, we say that He did not. He will not be involved in anything that is evil. But He recognized that just as He is the embodiment of good, one of His spirit children might one day choose to become the embodiment of the opposite. And that is exactly what happened.

Now let’s address your concerns about faith and works. Many people who do not understand our faith constantly state that “Mormons believe they can work their way into heaven”. Let me clear that up here and now. No, we do not believe we can work our way into heaven. Nor, at the other end of the scale, do we believe in E-Z Pass grace.

For centuries, Christians have fiercely debated what it means to be saved. The only commonly accepted result is that there is no commonly accepted definition. No surprise that denominations talk past each other.

Maximizing gain while minimizing effort has driven mankind since fig trees were clothing stores, and no one likes his business model challenged. It is no different when the goal is to be saved and go to heaven. It’s all about return on investment.

The best analysis I have read of what it means to be saved comes from Dallin H. Oaks, former Utah Supreme Court justice, former president of Brigham Young University, and now an apostle in our church. Elder Oaks suggests these definitions, which I quote or paraphrase as follows: (Also see http://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/05/have-you-been-saved?lang=eng).

      1) Meaning: Saved from the permanence of death through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Comment: A free gift to everyone who has been or will be born.

      2) Meaning: Saved from our sin and the consequences of sin.
Comment: Through the atonement of Christ, we can be saved by obeying His commandments.

      3) Meaning: Saved in the sense of being “born again.”
Comment: We are born again when we are baptized and take upon ourselves the name of Christ.

      4) Meaning: Saved in the sense of being delivered from a final spiritual death.
Comment: All but a very few are assured of a kingdom of glory in the world to come.

      5) Meaning: Saved in the sense of exaltation or eternal life.
Comment: God desires us to become perfect that we may become as He and Christ are.

The atonement of Christ makes all of these aspects of salvation possible. The most confusion arises when one person refers to the second meaning—being saved from our sins—which the listener visualizes the first or the third.

We believe that it is not enough alone to confess that Jesus Christ is our personal Savior, and go merrily on our way. To believe in a once-and-for-all declaration and a that’s-that attitude is like taking a bath once and never touching soap again. It takes constant effort to resist the temptations of the world.

Does that sound unreasonable? Yet it is from this simple notion—that we are required to keep the Lord’s commandments—that our critics manufacture the misconception that we believe we can work our way into heaven.

They say Mormons place too much emphasis on works. We say their interpretation of grace minimizes the responsibility we all have to repent and keep God’s commandments, and we ask, “If confessing Christ is sufficient, why bother to go to church?”

They respond that a sincere confessor will do good works out of love for Christ, not fear of punishment. We agree, but for those who don’t, is it possible for a person to fall from grace, to not be saved even though he has confessed Christ? And the interesting debate will continue.

I will grant part of their argument. We are an achievement-oriented religion. We encourage our members to serve others, pay an honest tithing, refrain from harmful substances, keep sexual relations within the bounds of marriage, and obey the other commandments. We are not passive; our religion is a 24/7 way of life.

Being saved by any definition requires the grace of Jesus Christ. A professor friend of mine tells of dining with a minister of another religion and his wife. When the conversation focused on the fate of those who were born before Christ, the minister’s wife said, in the essence, they were out of luck. We hope that attitude is not prevalent among those not of our faith, but it serves as a contrast to what we believe—that Christ’s sacrifice is not solely for those fortunate to be born after His resurrection. I found a deeper appreciation for Christ’s atoning grace when Tad R. Callister pointed out its four dimensions in his book “The infinite Atonement”. (A book I highly recommend you read).

“Backward. Just as Christianity did not begin in 30 AD, the blessing of the atonement did not wait for Christ’s death on the cross. They came into effect the moment Christ accepted the assignment from the Father in our pre-earthly existence. Just as a person can enjoy a meal at a restaurant before paying for it, so too could those who were born before Christ’s ministry enjoy the power of His atonement before He paid the actual price—His promise was good.

We Mormons would place ourselves at the mid-point of the scale noted earlier in my post. We cannot work our way into heaven, but we are expected to put in the effort to keep the Lord’s commandments. The sum of our belief is this thought from the Book of Mormon: “It is by the grace of Christ that we are saved AFTER ALL WE CAN DO.” (Emphasis added.)

Grace, as we understand it, is the love, mercy, and enabling power of the atonement that allows our sins to be forgiven and provides the opportunity to live in God’s presence forever. I remember reading a poll back in 2008 that asked Christians which definition of grace they believed. It stated that up-to 57% of Christians believed that people are saved by the grace of Christ if they will only recognize Him as their Savior. About 37% of the Christians polled believed that people are saved by grace of Christ only after they do their best to live His commandments.

In other words, a majority of Americans believe that recognizing Jesus Christ as their Savior is sufficient for one to be saved, nothing further needed. Three out of eight, on the other hand, lean toward the LDS concept of grace—not a bad showing for the doctrine considering that Mormons constitute barley 2% of the U.S. population.

Mormons believe that unconditional grace applies only to the first type of salvation—that all of us will be resurrected as a free gift. The grace of Christ is necessary for all others as well, but each is conditioned upon effort, faith, and obedience on our part. Another look at the six types of being saved may clarify what we believe is expected of us.

Number 1: Saved from death. Every person who occupies an earthly body will be resurrected and thus, in that sense, saved. Such a saving, however, does not necessarily place one in heaven.
Number 2: Saved from sins. This salvation comes from working with the Savior to repent of our sins and follow His counsel. We will be judged according to our works and deeds, or lack thereof, and where our heart was as we did them. Actions must have consequences.

Mormons do not believe in just a haven for good and a hell for the bad, an either-or, saved-or-not-saved, two-part hereafter. Rather, we believe there are three kingdoms of glory in the hereafter—celestial (where God dwells), terrestrial, and telestial (see D&C 76)—even the lowest of which surpasses this world in joy and happiness. (This concept is also found in Paul’s writings, see 1 Corinthians 15:40-41).

Number 3: Saved by being born again. When we are born again through baptism, we promise Christ that we will take His name upon us—be called a Christian—and keep His commandments. We are to have faith in Him and repent of our sins—real hope and change. As we do our best to change our ways, we receive help through the Savior’s grace, and resisting evil becomes easier.

Then we are born again of the Spirit when we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. This third Member of the Godhead can influence whomever He chooses, but the right to have His constant companionship comes only through formal confirmation after baptism.

Baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost do not by themselves punch our ticket and guarantee entry into the celestial kingdom. They but open the gate to that eventual goal; getting there depends upon our faithfulness.

Number 4: Saved from ignorance. Christ’s teachings bring us out of darkness and ignorance. Devout Mormons constantly study His life and teachings because such knowledge builds faith and protects us from evil.

Number 5: Saved from spiritual death. That is, every person who has not committed an unpardonable sin (intentional, premeditated murder, or has perfect knowledge of the Savior and then denies it) will receive one of the three kingdoms of glory. Everyone is saved to a different level of joy based on obedience to the laws and ordinances Christ established.

Therefore, who is saved depends upon which of the above six definitions one wants to discuss. All religions play certain roles, but only authorized Christianity can open the doors to the celestial kingdom.

For those who have read thus far I commend you for your effort, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about our beliefs. In conclusion I would like to address your final disagreement.

Was God once man like us? Did God once have a heavenly father like we have him now?

Let me answer with another question: Was Christ once man like us? Did Christ have a Heavenly Father whom He could call His God just as we can call Heavenly Father our God? Is Christ God? And can the glorified, resurrected Christ properly be called “perfect man,” as he was called by the early Christian father Ignatius (”To the Smyrnaeans,” 4, The Apostolic Fathers, 2nd ed., translated by J.B. Lightfoot and J.R. Harmer, ed. and rev. by M.W. Holmes, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, MI, 1989, p. 111)?

We know some intriguing details about Christ – that He once was man (or like man, though Only Begotten Son of God), that He was divine, that He died and resurrected and sits on His throne with the Father, with whom He is one. One can speculate on analogies between Christ and the Father, but we know essentially nothing about the “history” of God the Father except that He is eternal.

Lorenzo Snow, a President of the Church, once said “As man now is, God once was: as God now is, man may be.” This controversial passage, which is often misunderstood and taken out of context, is clearly applicable to Christ, a God who became mortal for a time and yet was still and is still God. His work made it possible for us to become as He is, in a limited sense, for we can receive glorious resurrected bodies (Phil. 3:21; 1 Cor. 15:40-45), we can become “joint-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:14-18), we can “put on the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4-10), and we can become “like him” (1 John 3:2). Indeed, Christ even went so far as to say, “Ye are gods” (John 10:34), in reference to the divine potential of human beings.

While He and the Father are the one true God, whom we will always worship, He does want us to become more like the Father (Matt. 5:48) and that possibility is there because of Christ. Thus, thinking of Christ and our relationship to Him, what Lorenzo Snow said is accurate. However, it appears that Lorenzo Snow’s quote also applies to the Father, indicating that He also experienced a period of mortality, but we know nothing specific. But before you let the idea of “God once being like man” offend you, remember that it is explicitly true about Christ Himself. If Christ were the same being as God the Father, then it would also be true of the Father as well, so non-LDS critics who accept the doctrine of the Trinity shouldn’t get so upset. Of course, we believe that God and Christ are separate individuals, one in purpose, heart, and mind. But, in the spirit of pure speculation, let me ask if it is possible that Christ, during His mission on the earth, was doing that which He had seen the Father do? In John 5:19, Christ said “The Son can do nothing, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”

Some people have speculated on what is meant by John 5:19 and on what Lorenzo Snow meant, but we do not know and I get very nervous when people pretend they know. Certainly there are many difficult and foolish questions which can be asked in this arena. The important point is that God, Christ, and man are of the same “species,” and that man has divine potential to become more like Christ and the Father (e.g., see Romans 8:14-18; 2 Peter 1:4-10; 1 John 3:2). This concept was understood by the early Christians.

Knowing who Christ is makes me very suspicious of anyone who says that we will become EXACTLY like Him. The Bible teaches that we can become “joint heirs” (Rom. 8:14-18) and can become “like him” (I John 3:2) and indeed, need to become like him (Matt. 5:48) and be one with him (John 17:21-23). Stronger still, Paul in Philippians 2: 5-7 seems to urge us to pursue that goal, not through puffery, but through humble service:

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant….”

However, I sense a world of difference between the “small g” gods that Christ mentioned (John 10:34) in speaking of the potential of humans (my view) and God the Eternal Father, who is the one and only everlasting God (see also I Cor. 8:5,6). The reference to humans as potential “gods” is clearly meant in a limited sense, but the word God uses nevertheless is “gods.” Obviously, we know too little to explain anything in depth about the next life and about “the glory that shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18). We are like microbes looking up through the microscope and speculating about the Scientist who observes us. We are children, following after our very wise and mature Father, knowing little more than a young child does of the things of God. This we know: the glory is to the Father (and Christ) forever. May we return to their presence.

I hope you have found this conversation to be enlightening. And again thank you for taking the time to better understand our beliefs. You realize that pretty much every prophet whose marital status was mentioned was a polygamist right? Why exactly is it an uber sin in the 20th century but perfectly fine in BC 1000? Not that I’m saying we should start it up now…just wondering why so many Christians tend to forget about the Old Testament of the Bible we’re so fond of.

Due to the Blaze having issues a few post are out of order this post should be after the 7th post ending in “effectiveness of His atonement.””

All Christians recognize and appreciate what Christ did for us during His earthly ministry. But the knowledge of what Christ did before He came to the earth—as I explained earlier—is an additional reason why we Mormons are all the more grateful for His life and mission.

Christ said explicitly that if we love Him, we must keep His commandments. That means effort (see Jon 14:15). We do not say that we love Christ more than other Christians do because we recognize this need to keep His commandments and expend effort doing so. Not at all. But neither do we love Him less.

      @lux

You found a lot of Mormon copy and paste stuff. Even though you really didnt look at my post I will respond.

      1. I said nothing about “working your way to heaven”. I simply stated if you believe you will become a god though salvation and works you do not worshiping the God of the Bible. To remotely put yourself anywhere near his level is blasphemous. You say we are spirit children from God. I dont believe in any way we are actual children of God. When you become saved you become his adopted child.

      John 1:12
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

To those who believed in his name he gave the right. That implies that there are people without the right. Where in the Bible are we spirit children?

      2. All I said here was that if you believe God was a man on another planet and he became exalted to become God you dont believe in the God of the Bible. Yes you will twist it and try to say well Jesus was a man. Yes he was, but not a regular man.

      1 Tim.6: 15 and 16
which God will bring about in his own time —God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

This clearly says there is only one God. To say he lived on a planet as a man means someone else created the planet.

LOL, and you used the John 10:34 defense to think you will be a god. That is so sad.

Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are gods’?

Ok, first off whos law was it written? Your law, mans law. In the time of Jesus men who judged life and death matters were called “gods”. Notice the lower tense and the earlier verses. The men were going to stone Jesus. I think that should go ahead and end that whole you will be a god one day debate.

      3. On to Jesus and Satan being brothers. First off it doesnt say this in the Bible at all. You are trying to mix the well God created it so it is his child with spirit babies idea.

2 Cor.11:12 to 15 are great verses for Mormons to read.

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. Jesus Christ himself leads it today through a living Prophet and 12 Apostles – just as he lead it during His earthly ministry. This Church is the only church in which the proper authority to baptize for the remission of sins, and the only church with the proper authority to seal marriages and families together forever.

The only way to know if this is true is to study and pray. The only place to get the correct information to pray about – first hand – is:

      http://www.mormon.org

Read and pray – that is the only way. If its true, what could be more important?

      :)

@MUTINY – you REALLY need to start reading articles from Mormons rather than anti-mormons. Regarding your contention with our biblically based belief in mans potential to become as our Father in Heaven, please read the following…

      http://www.lds.org/general-conference/1984/10/the-pattern-of-our-parentage?lang=eng&query=pattern+our+parentage

If you agree, fine, if you don’t agree, fine. However, you need to stop saying that “mormons don’t worship the God of the Bible” because its getting old.

I’m truly curious – are you a pastor, preacher, etc? Because you seem to have a lot of time on your hands to continually fight against anyone who believes differently than you.

What a freakish little man. Bashir means “one who nibbles on tree bark” in Pakistani. He once admitted to ceremoniously changing his underwear three times daily. He also conserves toilet paper and “simply loves tooting in my bathtub”. He’s never had a woman.

TEXASBETA, I’ve done some research of Bashir. He is London born into a Pakastani Christian family. He is not Muslim and I am well aware of that. But, I have found no mention of his being married or any relations with women. For that mater there is also no mention of relations with men. So, I will not draw a conclusion myself, but in this media climate, what does that mean to you?

Can someone please explain to me the relevance to the presidential election of how many wives Romney’s great grandfather had? And if we’re really going to be this ridiculous – exactly how many wives did Obama’s father have? Bashir is a dishonest, untrustworthy, useless partisan that is the epitome of what gives MSNBC a bad reputation.

    2. If Obama’s faith is on the table so are the GOP candidates faith.
    3. There are only two sides of faith. God of the Bible vs everything else. If you are not worshiping the God of the Bible you are against the God of the Bible. I believe that Obama is atheist. I believe Mormons do not worship the God of the Bible.
    4. We only have one Christian running for President. Ron Paul.

The LDS theology is very close to ancinet Judaism, AND early Christianity. Check out the Neal A. Maxwell Institute, particularly Dr. Hugn Nibley’s publications. Read “Mormonism, and Early Christianity,“ and ”Abraham in Egypt.” These will give you unprecedented glimpses into our theology, and beliefs.

Anyhow, if you look at the posts here, this issue is only used to try to divide us from within. The left thinks all religions are crazy – so which religion doesn’t matter. However, the number of people on the right who care are diminishing daily… much to chagrin of MUTINY and a few others :)

Obama is a freemason of the Prince Lodge. Freemason discriminate against everyone who is not a mason. Here’s the proof……..

“You must conceal all crimes of your brother Masons…and should you be summoned as a witness against a brother Mason be always sure to shield him…It may be perjury to do this, it is true, but you’re keeping your obligations.” Ronayne Handbook of Masonry, page 183

So Obama has sworn to lie for a brother mason. Here’s what a moral man thought of Obamas lodge.

“Masonry ought forever to be abolished. It is wrong – essentially wrong – a seed of evil, which can never produce any good.” President John Quincy Adams, Letters on Freemasonry, 1833

Why do we even argue about parties? ……..There’s only one party. The one world gov. takeover party.

“The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers….Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can ‘throw the rascals out’ at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy.” Carroll Quigley, CFR member (most influential organization for US policy)
