MSNBC’s Bashir Suggests Founding Fathers Would Favor Tax Increases on the Wealthy

MSNBC anchor Martin Bashir used his “Clear the Air” segment Tuesday to make the argument that raising taxes on the wealthy is precisely what the Founding Fathers would have wanted. He supported his claim by citing the clause in Article I, Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution that bans Congress from granting titles of nobility.
Bashir’s reasoning went something like this:
It’s time now to “Clear the Air.” And with Republicans declaring that class warfare has been started by President Obama, after he suggested that Warren Buffett should at least pay the same amount of tax as his secretary, I was reminded of an American history class that I took in my final year of high school in London.
During one lesson, we were introduced to Article 1 and Section 9 of the American Constitution and were told that this was one of the most important clauses designed to end the aristocratic and class-ridden approach to society that had defined Great Britain during the 18th century.
…
There is no class warfare because the battle is over and the middle classes have lost. And that’s why asking Mr. Buffett to pay the same amount of tax as his secretary is not class warfare, it’s actually the faint echo of a constitution that was intended to prevent the kind of social divisions that are all too apparent today.
Meanwhile, NewsBusters‘ Ken Shepherd clarified that Bashir did not offer evidence to support the notion that Alexander Hamilton or any of the other framers of the Constitution supported an income tax, let alone a progressive scheme of income taxes based on the premise of “prevent[ing]… social divisions.”
Shepherd added:
Indeed no federal income tax implemented until the Civil War, and that tax was repealed 10 years later. It was only with the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913 that income taxes received iron-clad constitutional authorization.
Do you think the Founding Fathers would support President Obama’s push to raise taxes on those considered “wealthy?”

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 10:01pmMartin Bashir grossly misconstrued what the constitution says here.
Article 1 Section 9 states the following:
…No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States; And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them shall, without the Consent of Congress, accept any present, Emolument, Office, or Title of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign state…
What does this have to do with taxes? No title of Nobility shall be granted… So this means the government can’t give out king, queen, duke, duchess etc titles to whomever. No bestowing knighthoods and the like. Hmmm…. Their must be some connection to taxes somewhere here….

Uhh Marty leaves out that there is a bg difference between capital gains and earned income tax. What do you expect though from the fringe state controlled media. His talking points came right from Emperor Obamas speech! As for where the Founding Fathers stand leave it to proggies to twist their words. They did it with obamacare and got away with it, they will do it again and tax the heck out of this country. I do not understand why ppl take what these idgets say as gospel?! When I heard things from either side I always looked into it why are so many Americans willing to take ones word when a second later they complain about how much politicians lie. So they admit to the lying yet use it when they are angry! Emp Obama is out of his league and has no clue what he is doing and lets get something straight HE INITIATED this new narrative of class warfare. All the proggies are jumping on board saying its the GOP/republicants that have been doing it yet the actions of the proggies on the left clearly shows they are the ones initiating class warfare.
Its so sad that we can all see through the bs and see what they are doing a few yrs ago I wouldnt have known any better. Because of their out of control spending policies etc they blew the lid of their manipulation of the people and the media. Posted on September 20, 2011 at 9:36pmI would expect a middle easterner of Mr. Bashir’s background bathed in the lies of Muslim belief to try to twist the words of our Constitution to convince the dumbed down American public that he is correct. But what is infuriating is the clear answer that titles of nobility were conferred by government not by the efforts and fruits of the labor of people. There is literally no logical way to assume that the reference to nobility in the Constitution as Mr. Bashir and his liberal friends seek to imply existed in the minds of the framers. It is only another way to seek to justify class warfare. Mr. Bashir and his liberal friends believe so mightily in their cause, I suggest that every liberal who supports this belief and makes over $50,000 per year pay everything in excess of that amount to the federal government as a show of good faith that they really believe what they say.

Our founding fathers WROTE The Constitution.
They came here to ESCAPE TAXATION.
They had the ability to allow taxation in The Constitution.
They did not have to “hint” at it by prohibiting titles of nobility.
If they had wanted taxes, they would have made taxes.
But, they did not.
Why?
Because, they know what happens when you give people the power to spend other people’s money!
They knew when you give people power over you, that they always want more… More… MORE!!!
They knew we SHOULD NOT have taxes.
They LIMITED our federal government’s power, thereby limiting its need for money.
Left at the local (state / city) level, people are best able to MANAGE their own money.
Our founding fathers SAID SO.
This guy is a FOOL, and a LIAR. The truth is not in him !!!

Posted on September 21, 2011 at 3:12pmWe can no longer call ourselves taxpayers. We have become “sharecroppers” on Obama’s farm. If you live, work and own property in the state of Washington, your tax bill is a bit more than 53% of you’re income. Being raised in the mid-south in the late fifties and sixties, my family was exposed to many aspects of rural farming. My mom, being fiscally prudent, located and bought produce, fresh from the farm. Most of the farms we used were in northern Mississippi and were operated by blacks. In the fifties, the term “sharecropper” was slowly being edited out of our vernacular and being reploaced by the term “tenant farmer.” FYI, sharecropping came about after the civil war. Carpetbaggers came in droves to the post civil war south and bought up as much land as they could for just pennies on the dollar. (See the movie “Gone With the Wind,” if it is still available.) But they still had a problem, which was, how to staff their new property with agricultural workers. Whites in the south, by and large, wouldn’t work for the people who had recently won the war…resentments ran high then. This left only the recently emancipated slaves, who found themselves homeless, jobless and ultimately, unprepared to deal with people like the carpetbaggers. It wasn’t enough to buy up and own untold acres of land, these folks wanted it all. So they came up with a plan, which was called, “the company store.” The company store provided seed, tools, animals, food, and pretty much everything
Report Post »dave 3433
Posted on September 21, 2011 at 3:32pmtheir sharecroppers through the year. When it came time to harvest, the crops were evenly divided between the two parties, Then, the company store bill was given to the farmers. On it was listed everything that was purchased during the year, and the total virtually always equaled or exceded the share of the crop. So every year, the farmers went deeper in debt. And as such, they literally lost their newly gained freedom. So today, I ask all people of good will, “Does paying more than half of your earnings in taxes make you feel like you are sharecroppers?” My apologies. What was I thinking? To make sure we don’t run afoul of the PC police, I need to use the term “tenant farmers.” If you’re paying more in taxes than you get to keep, you are a tenant farmer. Thanks for letting me speak. Ignorance and arrogance are never qualities that go well together. The taxd structure that the founders implimented were the result of censuses and the burdon was levied equally among the population. A scheme we should go back to today so that all of us share the burdon of taxes. If you want someone to pay thier fair share of taxes how about taxing the 49% that pay nothing and eliminating the idea of receiving a tax return. Progressives dont seem to like that idea because it would eliminate a dependant class of voters they keep in thier pocket looking for the free ride. If everyone had to pay taxes maybe thier wouldnt be so much call for all of these unconstitutional entitlement schemes the Democraps are so fond of. Currantly the tax structure seems to be to punish the educated and ambititous for the benefit of the ignorant and worthless. American needs to rid itself of these leeches for once. If EVERYONE had to pay, maybe there would more concern of how much we spend. Everyone needs some skin in the game, not just 51% of us. Lets make it fair for all, straight across the board for everyone. It used to be goal to be successful, when you remove that incentive everyone quits trying. Why do you think the Soviet Union crashed and burned, they eliminated incentive.
