MSNBC’s Buchanan Challenges Buffett: Why Don‘t You Just Send ’$5 Billion‘ to the Gov’t?

Pat Buchanan Responds to Warren Buffetts Tax Policy Op edMSNBC political commentator Pat Buchanan is super-annoyed with billionaire investor Warren Buffett’s belief that the super-rich deserve tax increases.

Earlier this morning, The Blaze covered Buffett’s notion, as written in The New York Times, that taxes should be raised for those making more than $1 million. This morning, Buchanan had plenty to say in response to this ideal:

“I’m a little fed up with these people who come on, you know, their big op-eds, all these admonitions. Why doesn’t he set an example and send a check for $5 billion to the federal government? He’s got about $40 billion. You know, you had a plan up there, I talked to Howie Carr at Boston where the super-rich could contribute an extra amount. It was something like one-tenth of one percent did it. You get all this noise from these big rich folks. Let them send checks and set an example instead of writing op-eds.”

Watch Buchanan make these comments, below:

NewsBusters also highlights the fact that outlets like Yahoo! News and The Huffington Post gave prominence to Buffett’s claims, indicating what the media watchdog sees as the perpetuation of left-leaning ideals on tax policy.

While Buffett is certainly entitled to his opinion on the matter, critics like Buchanan are likely to continue poking holes in his commentary, especially considering Buffett’s ability to willingly take on more of a tax burden if he so chooses.

Complaining about a low tax payment, as he does in his Times piece, is, again, valid. But, taking advantage of tax loopholes that enable that low rate may, indeed, deserve some scrutiny.

People like Warren Bufffett have a heck of alot of nerve trying to tell others what they should do with their money. What is he worth, about 40 billion? He should donate 39.999 billion to help pay down the debt, but even that would be a drop in the bucket and he knows it. Let everyone pay taxes and then everyone will have some “skin in the game” as Obama likes to put it. Then everyone might give a damn how their money is eing spent.

You people have no sense at all.. raise the rich higher taxes, and you will see them take their businesses completely out of the country. How many have already done that?? No wonder there are no jobs. If anything the rich should have their taxes cut way back so they will bring their businesses back!

Why is this always discussed? Taxing the rich yields a molehill; the mountain is in the tax base and in cutting wasteful spending. How hard is that to grasp? Why are the rich always tax targets? My guess is that it is an argument that appeals to the lowest common denominator and is something the left can try to throw in as a solution, when in practice, it does the opposite of provide a solution to long term debt.

But if Congress closes the tax loopholes, and lets him do what is right and forces the other billionaires to pay what is right the common man and woman in the USA would win. Thank you for that. I just wanted to add a quick note. So, who here would be comfortable with Warren, someone you obviously disagree with, being a major source of income for the government? Don’t you think that might lead to some conflicts of interest? If that story hit here, wouldn’t most of you just be clamoring to declare that Buffett just bought the US government? Let alone, would you want the government to plan around the unpredictable whims of whether someone wants to donate money or not?

When he sells his stock and other investments, OTHERS will will buy and invest. Your argument is totally ridiculous. Why do you think people hide money in foundations and in relatives name. @ Michael B,

Having a profound effect on other investors and having his hands “tied” are two different things. His hands are not tied, just like the stock markets fluctuations that happen with trading other investors know there is a risk when they invest.

The fact remains, Mr. Buffet can send the government as much money as he wants, the problem is he doesn’t really want to.

As with most Liberals he only wants to contribute to his beliefs if he can force others to do the same. If he had true convictions, he would lead by example not attempt to lead by force.

A flat tax would be the only way to be “fair”. Since “paying their fair share” is what we continue to hear from the left they should be lobbying for that. That would stop all loop holes including the big ones that currently allow those that do not pay taxes to recieve a refund.

Is a tax loophole something that was not meant to be in the tax laws? I think so. So why would it be wrong to take thim out. plus reread Buffett’s statement about it not hurting the investers. I agree with this, up to a point. One more thing its the % amount that we all pay that gets me. If I make $100 a day and have to pay 20% that would leave me $80 to live on. The guy making $1000 a day pays 10% due to loopholes in the tax system may pay more but he is still left with $900 a day to live on. He should at the very least pay the same 20%. So get rid of the tax loopholes.

It works because the rich wants to buy more expensive things so they pay more. The poor don’t pay for expensive things so they pay less. Very simple….. No fileing taxes every year. What, you don’t know how to work a computer? I googled rich paying taxes and got this nice quote from http://www.american.com/archive/2007/november-december-magazine-contents/guess-who-really-pays-the-taxes

“The latest data show that a big portion of the federal income tax burden is shouldered by a small group of the very richest Americans. The wealthiest 1 percent of the population earn 19 percent of the income but pay 37 percent of the income tax. The top 10 percent pay 68 percent of the tab. Meanwhile, the bottom 50 percent—those below the median income level—now earn 13 percent of the income but pay just 3 percent of the taxes. These are proportions of the income tax alone and don’t include payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare.”

You really need to stop listening to the Democrap party talking points and start thinking for yourself.

“Tax Loopholes”, is an euphemism used disingeuously to imply something sinister. It is simply a method built into the taxcode to allow people to reduce their taxable income. Everyone who pays taxes is afforded this benefit. Problem is, most people don’t do their own taxes anymore, so they have no idea about it.

The upper 1% make 20% of all the money made in this country and pay 40% of the taxes. The real question for the left is: What percentage do you think would be fair?

The problem with Obama‘s arguments against the rich is that they will be applicable right up to the point that you’ve taken all their money and no rich are left. This truly exposes Obama’s core values.

“We have so many people who can’t see a fat man standing beside a thin one without coming to the conclusion the fat man got that way by taking advantage of the thin one. So they’re going to solve all the problems of human misery through government and government planning. Well, now, if government planning and welfare had the answer—and they’ve had almost 30 years of it—shouldn’t we expect government to read the score to us once in a while? Shouldn’t they be telling us about the decline each year in the number of people needing help? The reduction in the need for public housing?” – Ronald Reagan

There is no value in taking money from the “rich,” once it occurs their businesses and their spending shrink, lay-offs occur, and it costs more money to provide the newly unemployed with unemployment insurance than could possibly be confiscated from the businesses that once hired them to work.

The reality is, Uncle Sam is paid more in pennies by the whole lot of the everyday employed, (even if they don’t pay income tax, as their whole income is spent back in the economy), than he can grab from the wallets of the likes of Gates or Buffet.

When Reagan shrank the tax rate for the top tier from 70 percent (a criminal liberal figure to say the least) to less than half that, the government’s take doubled in a few short years. Cutting taxes and allowing the rich to maintain more led to job creation, labor activity, and the creation of wealth, and more taxpayers to boot. And this is recent history!

As far as Glen being a nut job, the reality is he knows how to play chess, and he can see how one moves begets another and another and another. He can see, using history as a pattern, where this track terminates, and he knows the destination isn’t good. He can identify the worst case scenario, and as a result he discomforts the complacent, and their only defense mechanism is to call Beck crazy, thereby dismissing his probable predictions so that their stress can be alleviated. If I remember correctly, it was Buffet who stated his secretary paid more in taxes on a percentage basis than he does. Well Mr. Buffet, fire your tax accountants, do not take legal deductions and send in more money than you currently have been. I suspect you have your trusts and estate set up to minimize income and estate taxes, break those and pay more, and that goes to the rest of these charlatans who think we should pay more yet they take full advantage of all legal tax reducing strategies. They always want someone else to pay yet they avoid it. You feel strongly about us all having to pay more, put up your extra cash NOW.

It‘s in Obama’s plan, the class warfare. If he can get it passed to tax the rich more, in order to make a profit, they will necessarily have to raise the cost of whatever it is they make that makes them all that money. We will be paying more for goods and services, so more people will have less money, and the economy will collapse. Once it collapses, he can restart it as a marxist/socialist nation. given the choice between tyranny and anarchy, the people will choose tyranny. During the Revolutionary War, 1/3 stood with the British, 1/3 fought for freedom and 1/3 just wanted life to go on as it always had. We are the 1/3 fighting for America’s rights.

cnbc.com commentators just said this…. and I had an op-ed piece 3 months ago, regarding Maines, stephen Kings vocal outcry for the government to raise taxes… I said the same thing.. Hey steven, why dont you jsut VOLUNTARILY sewnd the extra Money you have to the government, without them making laws FORCING you to ? We dont need more taxation laws, we dont need more government mandates on its people. why are you condoning this..? Stop it!!! Charity is a noble cause, and for those who can afford it should step up, but only if they want to… Charity isnt a DEMAND on you, or other people.. its optional. Taxation ISNT OPTIONAL!! STOP IT!!

Here is just a partial list of the “billionaires club” who want US all to pay more in taxes … and yes they have all made it to the COUNTRY CLUB but “NOW” they say there is no room for YOU!

      Ted Turner,
      Warren Buffet,
      Bill Gates,
      Stephen King,
      Matt Damon.
      Michael Moore,
      Barack Obama,
      Joe Biden,
      Mark Zuckerberg,
      Tom Steyer,
      Morris Pearl,
      Michael Steinhardt,
      Mark Ruffalo,
      Doug Liman,
      Edie Falco,
      Garrett Gruener,
      Ron Garret,
      George Soros,
      Jeffrey Immelt,

I will personally deliver the checks to the IRS for all you billionaires on this list
who’s feeble minds NOW think we all need to pay more in taxes then we already do
YES we want it to start with YOU!
They’ve made their billions. Higher taxes keeps them in the economic and political driver seat.
It’s a way to eliminate the competition!
No one needs to pay more taxes… NO ONE!

Agreed. Now that it would hardly effect their lifestyles, they make blanket statements about “wanting” higher taxes. Talk about out of touch. I say we give the class warfare crowd what they want and go door to door to Democrat party donors and “redistribute” their wealth to reduce the deficit.

ILuvAmerica, Rick Perry didn’t hurt a single little girl. The Gardisil thing was thrown out. Any girl in Texas who was hurt by Gardisil was given it at the consent of her parents. HIs signing the order was STUPID, but our system here worked as it should and, as is typical for him, Perry listened to the people and dropped it.
