MSNBC‘s Lawrence O’Donnell Admits On-Air: ‘I Am a Socialist’

On Friday’s “Morning Joe” MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell made a startling admission: “I am a socialist.”
The statement from the regular host of “The Last Word” came as he was chiding contributor Glenn Greenwald from Salon.com for apparently being a liberal hiding behind the word “progressive.”
“I am a socialist. I live to the extreme left, the extreme left of you mere liberals,” he said:
An extended version of the clip shows more of the uncomfortable exchange. It reveals that O’Donnell and Greenwald disagree about why Democrats lost on Tuesday. Greenwald suggests they tried to appear conservative and paid the price, while O’Donnell seems to suggest that the only way liberals and progressives can hold power is if they temper their platforms:

They always run out of other people’s money. It’s quite a characteristic of them. They then start to nationalise everything, and people just do not like more and more nationalisation, and they’re now trying to control everything by other means. They’re progressively reducing the choice available to ordinary people.

On Glenn‘s program ’s 4th Hour w/ Stu & Pat, they’ve been asking Moron Trivia contestants for weeks, “What is socialism?” And they’ve yet to get a correct answer! “Is it some kind of socializing, like at a party?”, or some such is the usual answer! I’ve never read the correct definition of socialism here, either. People are quick to throw around words like “Socialist”, “Marxist”, “Communist” etc since those are the words they were taught to fear during the cold war, but few actually know what they mean. I’d even go as far as to say that NOBODY who uses Socialist, Marxist or Communist as an insult knows what those words mean.

Comcast is not going to clean house at MSNBC unless they see the mountain of complaints and shrinking profits leading up to the merger. Once the merger is done, they will have no clear indication of why they are losing business – too many factors involved in such a big change.

If we wanted to retain those channels, we would have to put their “box” in our house and pay another $12 per month, if not, we were left with only a basic,basic package at $19 per month. Among the channels they no longer offered was FNC. Surprise, surprise that NBC Universal owners no longer offered FNC, except at a premium. I miss FNC but will not pay Comcast $40 a month for it. When I become convinced of it’s reliability, satellite will be my next move.

I wish more would call themselves what they are so we can then explain why they are wrong without all the dross about how we are “smearing” them rather then simply describing them.

I give him credit for setting the record straight. I also think he maybe the best MSNBC has on their lineup. His conclusions are usually wrong but he doesn’t makeup facts, just chooses a different route. Now will the others come clean?….I doubt it. I find it extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY amusing that you would read the headline, not bother to watch the clip, and assume that a TEA PARTY candidate would come out and claim to be socialist, to, how did you say it… appear to be more mainstream. What planet do you live on? did you not pay attention to the election on Tuesday? If you would bother to watch the clip, you would see that conservatives outnumber liberals by 2 to 1. Fact.

Or you would be grateful for if you actually knew the meaning of the word “socialist”, which I doubt anyone here does. So how do we get rid of the socialist elements in our country?
First, get rid of anti-trust laws, which prevent any one company from monopolizing a market. That is a GOVERNMENT restriction on a business which prevents single company from becoming the only supplier for a product, eliminating competition and allowing them to charge consumers whatever they want. That law is bad for a powerful business, but good for Americans. That’s socialism – government control of business to promote “the general welfare.”
Then, let’s get rid of the government requirement to pay overtime (Fair Labor Standards Act). Anyone here get overtime pay? That’s socialism – the Government telling business what their pay practices must be. Toss it, and the minimum wage too. If there are more people than jobs, pay people whatever they will work for rather than steal to pay their kids (for reference, read The Grapes of Wrath).
Obviously Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are socialist practices, so tell Grandma you‘re pulling the plug on her SS because it’s better to die than be a commie/socialist/Marxist.
The VA? 100% socialized medicine. All you veterans out there tell us how you’d rather have the private insurance your neighbor has.
The public school system? Socialism. That’s the government forcing you to pay for education (whether you have children or not) and forcing your child to stay in school under penalty of law. Maybe the idea is to make America stronger by having an educated populace, but that is straight socialism.
I could go on, but to what point? I’m not a “socialist”. But I do know there is not a single person who reads this website who has a clue what socialism or communism or Marxism (the new epithet) or even capitalism even is. They’re all just buzzwords of the uneducated, with either good or bad connotations, but otherwise without meaning.

If gradma could have kept her money for the last 80 years in place of forced confiscation(SP?) she would be much bettler off. Not to mention that she has had to pay to indoctrinate you all why her kids were raised and gone. Why if these are so naturally so good don’t we make them voluntary? People would natually participate in what seems like the best deal on the market, Would’nt they? Let people just be free to choose your superior way and let’s see what the outcome is? Afraid of choices are you? I have done much better back in the day under the hidden economy where my taxes were nill. The only wealth I have left is from those freedom days. Get your self prepared because all of the programs you site are in free fall when the wagon pullers quit pull’in your A$$ around.

And at the same time, they‘re confirming all that we’ve said about them. But the socialist, he‘s attempting to differentiate himself from the liberal and that’s where we have to step in. We have to make sure things don’t get out of control here, spun in the way in which these two factions would like it to be spun.
But these two cannot be separated . . . yet. They are bound by their shared commitment to the notion that the end justifies the means. They are bound by their shared commitment to the notion that the Republic, the United States, its constitution, it needs to be dramatically altered or abolished. They are bound by their shared commitment of despising America’s history.
These are both dangerous people, and representative of many more that cannot be trusted as a source of information as we have long known . . . Liberal, Socialist . . . essentially there is no difference; they espouse the same ideals and are very much alike in their desires and effects.
Know that these two are media chameleons acting as though they are looking at each other for the first time, seeing each other, naturally turning into each other as they observe, being made sick at what they’re seeing . . . they can’t stand looking at themselves for the moment . . . Tragically, it’s the equivalent of wanting to kill your mother because you believe you were born with the same ugly face, short stubby legs and hairy chin.
Realistically, liberalism is the ideology that allows socialism to begin life and flourish. Socialism however, is cannibalistic, as demonstrated here. Liberalism gives birth to socialism; and when the child realizes how ugly that it is, and that it continually fails, it feels it must destroy that which gave it life. It is part of the great narcissistic contradiction that liberalism is and the endless cycle of destruction that it operates under.
