MSNBC‘s Maddow Gets Upset Over ’Shining City On The Hill’ Metaphor

Before MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews was able to give his opinion on the GOP’s response to Obama’s SOTU address, fellow host Rachel Maddow made a curious comment that might make one speculate that the prime host has a problem with the concept of “American Exceptionalism.”
To put things in context, the MSNBC crew had just watched Indiana’s Mitch Daniels wrap up his brief response saying:
“We will advance our positive suggestions with confidence, because we know that Americans are still a people born to liberty. There is nothing wrong with the state of our Union that the American people, addressed as free-born, mature citizens, cannot set right. Republicans in 2012 welcome all our countrymen to a program of renewal that rebuilds the dream for all, and makes our ‘city on a hill’ shine once again.”
That closing line from Daniels is what seemed to cause Ms. Maddow’s tsuris. Immediately following the response, and introducing Chris Matthews, Maddow said this:
Chris, I have to put it to you because you’re the only person in the world to which I know of that I can complain about this, the city on the hill does not shine. The city on the hill never shines.
Matthews did not appear to be thrilled about that introduction and passed it with relatively little comment. His review of Mitch Daniels’ response was generally positive, and might even be considered a “glowing” review:
“I really liked that speech by Mitch Daniels. I thought it was Midwestern conservatism, the best kind, honest, fiscally conservative of course, but recognizing that we have to protect our safety net, and we have to recognize that the rich cannot get all the pension money, all the entitlements.”
Did Maddow have an issue with Daniels’ speech and the merits of the metaphor, or could it be that she does not believe America is a shining example for the rest of the world?

With huge swaths of the country having just 1-2% of the population being homosexual, many of us do not in fact have family, friends and coworkers that are homosexual. In urban areas that favor that lifestyle it may be more like 5% and your statement more likely to be accurate.
Btw, I don’t find her funny, intelligent or analytic. She is in her position because of her simplistic political beliefs and probably because she is homosexual. The comments quoted above seem to be typical for her the few times I could stand to watch her show.

The fact of the matter is, it is my right should I choose to be racist, to hate homosexuality, or a host of other judgments that just happen to be out of style now. That is why I will make no apology for what I believe. Black people are just as capable of anything a white person can do. There is no difference except pigmentation. My white race is no better than any other- period. I am not afraid of homosexuals. I have had friends in the past who were gay. They are the same as any other person except for their sexual preference. Their preference sickens me- literally! I find it gross and disgusting. I say these things because that is where we are. If the liberal-left, as well as some homosexuals wish to push this down people’s throats, and vilify those who won’t embrace such a lifestyle, then they are going to have to hear what I think- period. I was NEVER as vocal about these things until now. I was never one to poke fun at their lifestyle- in fact; I find it distasteful to do so. I have never treated a homosexual as substandard. I would rather just not know. I don’t publicize my heterosexual relationship, and neither should they. My husband and I curb our displays of affection to our own home and so should they. Where do you liberals come up with statements like this? So the wealthy pay no state, local, sales tax? I guess they don’t own vehicles, or buy anything. All the wealthy do is breath and hide their money. I can bet that a BMW costs more than a Ford Focus so the sales tax is more, it uses more gas, and if you live here in Michigan the license fee is much more not to mention insurance premiums which Michigan has added about 15% to for the state. I sure wish liberals would at least use a little common sense before they repeat what Obama has told them.
