MSNBC’s Martin Bashir: If Socialism Works for the NFL, Why Not Use It in Campaigns?

“It’s time now to clear the air and as Republican candidates continue to falsely accuse the president of wanting to transform America into a European socialist state, I’ve been particularly surprised that they haven’t targeted one of this country’s most popular industries,” MSNBC’s Martin Bashir said Thursday on a segment called “Clean the Air.”

“An industry that has not only adopted the essential elements of Socialism, but is proud of it! It’s an industry in which all 32 franchises share profits for a common cause,” Bashir said, failing to mention what that “common cause” is.

“This is no Economic Darwinism, no survival of the fittest – this is actually designed to ensure an equality of product for all consumers…The industry, of course, is the National Football League [NFL],” Bashir said.

Bashir went on to cite a 60 Minutes interview wherein CBS’ Steve Kroft asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, “I mean that’s socialism isn’t it?”

“It’s a form of socialism. And, it’s worked quite well for us,” Goodell responded.

However, what Bashir “forgot” to mention in his “See? Socialism works!” monologue is the rest of Goodell’s answer to Kroft’s question:

So we try to combine socialism and capitalism. How can we socialize by sharing our revenue in a way that will allow every team the ability to compete?

It’s not just socialism. The NFL is essentially a cartel, albeit a legal one, thanks to a limited exemption from anti-trust laws granted by Congress more than 50 years ago.

Ah, well, that is a little different from simply saying, “Yep! Socialism’s the thing for me!”

“The NFL has a $6 billion revenue share deal with the television networks – one of which, our own NBC, will televise this weekend’s ultimate climax and this game alone is expected to attract the highest audience in television history,” Bashir continued.

“So if this works for sport, why can’t it apply to politics?” Bashir asked, ignoring the logical fallacy of assuming that a particular affirmative can universally apply to all situations.

“Why can’t the Republican and Democrat candidates for president each be allocated an equal dollar amount, from a central pool of money? Advertising time could also equally shared so that we’d never have a repeat of last week in Florida where Mitt Romney had 12,000 ads and poor Newt Gingrich played just 200,” Bashir said.

“Of course, politics can be just as aggressive as football but the candidates would be on equal footing. They wouldn’t have to be petrified by a shady Super PAC, coming out nowhere with millions of dollars for one particular candidate and then blowing everyone else out of the game,” Bashir continued.

“And don’t say that’s un-American or against the spirit of the game. Because that is the very essence of the most popular game that’s ever been played in this country. And this is probably why I’ve grown to love the game, myself, because it means that fans from Minnesota to Manhattan, from Medford to Miami, can wake up at the beginning of a new season and genuinely believe that their team has a change to be there on Super Sunday,” Bashir said.

“That’s the America that all of us love and want to see even if it has been brought about by what some call socialism,” Bashir proudly concluded.

Final thought: Given that several critics have also accused commissioner Goodell of running the NFL like a “dictator,” should politicians model themselves after that as well?

    As with all existing socialist structures, and to the extent that the NFL is ‘socialist’, they exist ONLY because of the surrounding capitalist/free-market systems which provide the inherent support.

      Rightthinking- You almost nailed it. However, having watched the interview I almost fell out of my chair when Goodell let him get away with the socialism reference. The NFL is a corporation with 32 competing divisions, which thrives upon that competition. It is in the interest of that corporation to keep a competitive balance for the purposes of generating profits. Without that balance, revenues would suffer. This corporation (the nfl) has determined that having 32 divisions is what yields the optimum profit. It is NOT SOCIALISM, it is CAPITALISM at its finest. I thought Goodell was smarter than that, but he proved himself to be another 10 mil per year idiot.

      The fact that you openly asked “why won’t socialism work for American politics?” on national television without blushing or laughing makes me wonder about a few possibilities:

      1. You may have had surgery to snip the “blush response” nerves in your face.
      2. You were raised by wolves and are unaware of the histories of Russia and China, neither are you aware that every socialist nation on the planet is in crisis, has slaughtered untold millions, and are failures.
      3. You are the best actor alive and should be awarded an Oscar.
      4. You slipped wilst carrying an ice-pick and gave yourself an accidental lobotomy, and can no longer be held responsible for dribbling nonsense.

      Now to be completely fair, I do think that corruption and moral decay, and greed within our political system makes it easier for the wealthy to “BUY” an election. In which case I think you ought to take a look at the amount of money that Obama has raised, before picking at the Republican candidates. Wouldn’t THAT be “fair” reporting?

      It’s partly our own fault for allowing a two-party system to continue here in America against George Washington’s warnings. I believe we can make improvements if we apply our brains. Solutions, I will add, that DO NOT INCLUDE socialism.

    wow. I have always disliked Goodell. He runs the league like a dictator. He tells the players how to act, how to celebrate, and how to play. Yes, it is like socialism – and he is the dictator.

    The NFL is not the government. The NFL is a private company and can run itself on socialism if it wants to. Most private companies prefer the capitalist model. But since the NFL had a MONOPOLY, it can do whatever. Sorry Bashir – not a good analogy

      Also, he neglects to mention the fact that the plays don’t get paid anywhere near what the owners get paid. In fact, not all the players get paid the same either. If a player doesn’t play they get rid of him. they have players that are free agents (aka mercenaries) that play for the highest bidder.     As Mark Levin pointed out the other day on his radio program, there is one key difference…the NFL is a private enterprise. They can do whatever they choose, however they choose to do it. They have come up with a model that works for them and the consumers get what they pay for. Citizens also have the option of whether or not to partake in it. If I don’t want to watch football, I won‘t and it doesn’t cost me anything…if I do want to watch the Super Bowl, maybe I’ll buy some stocks through E-Trade because that talking baby commercial is funny. My choice !!

The so-called “socialist” countries you cited are countries with strong capitalistic endeavors with social programs. The social programs are only funded through captitalism. Nationalized health care, economic safety nets, transfer of wealth from the rich to the poor, etc. . . . can only work if there is wealth to begin with. socialism and communism has NEVER created wealth, it has only redistrbuted it, stolen it or confiscated it.     Bashir, you sir are an idiot.. Revenue sharing only happens between the NFL and its partners!!! When a 12 year old kid buys a NY Giants Jersey, the money doesn‘t go to pay Tom Brady’s Salary!! Only the TV contracts and the NFL sponsors money gets shared with the franchises. The franchises are free to earn money in other ways like merchandise, ticket sales, concessions, and in the case of Green Bay, STOCK IN THE TEAM!!

    One drastic contrast that he fails to mention. The players themselves are more like capitalism b/c their salaries are based off performance. Therefore, the better they play, the more money they can make. Their salaries are not capped. They can demand and make as much as they deserve and command. So if you want to socialize something, socialize our government agencies and spread the wealth to them, but never socialize the actual product that is private enterprise!

    Really? Then in “fairness” all tickets, including Superbowl tickets should be the same price, regardless of seat, regardless of game, regardless of team. All salaries must be the same, star or 3rd string – same pay. And all marketing of products must stop, because that is capitalism. The players work for the owners (NFL), but our government is supposed to work for us!

    Ok, everybody gets a long term, 20 million dollar contract. I suppose that settles everything, huh Martin? You sir, are on par with the high school students who were recently asked a few simple civics questions and FAILED. (but they didn’t fail when it comes to comedy) No wonder you have your own TV show.

      Socialism works Very well. Take a look at living in European nations of Finland, Sweden, Norway, France, etc. You won’t find a homeless person on the street- you won’t see a college student buried under impossible debt. Everyone is happier when everyone works together-that is socialism. Capitalism in the US sucks and allows for massive inequality aka Debt Slavery!
