MSNBC‘s Bashir Uses Book of Mormon to Warn Romney of ’Eternal Damnation’ for Alleged Lies

MSNBC’s Martin Bashir took the time to slam Mitt Romney for allegedly lying, while using the Book of Mormon to lecture the Republican presidential candidate about the tenets of a moral character. According to Bashir, Romney has told three lies over the past few days (about Ted Nugent’s endorsement, unemployment under President Obama and the media’s leftist tilt) — an offense punishable by “eternal damnation.”

“It doesn’t matter how many times he hears the truth, Mitt Romney prefers to tell lies,” Bashir said, going on to call the leading GOP candidate “Mitt the Mendacious.”
Then, he [Bashir] wondered how Romney would be punished for lying, and whipped out the religious text of Romney’s faith.
“In Section 63, in verse 17 of the Doctrine and Covenants of the Mormon Church we find this: ‘All liars, and whosoever loveth and and maketh a lie, and the whoremonger, and the sorcerer, shall have their part in that lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death,’” Bashir said. “And from the Book of Mormon to Nephi, Chapter 2, Verse 34 we find this: ‘Woe unto the liar, for he shall be thrust down to hell.’”
“Given what the Book of Mormon is clearly saying, Mr. Romney has but two choices,” Bashir railed on. “He can either keep lying and potentially win the White House, but bring eternal damnation upon himself or he can start telling the truth. The question for him, I guess, is which is more important.”

Bashir does not have any right to comment on any American. Freedom of the Press is only for American Citizens. If we were at war with Japan or Germany and it was the 1940s, Japanese and Germans would never have been allowed to comment on our radio or newsreels. If FDR was President today, the likes of Bashir would be in a Internment Camp somewhere in New Mexico.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 10:48amI wondered if it ever occurred to ol’ Marty to use religion as an opportunity for personal growth and developing a relationship with God, rather than a weapon to bludgeon others?
Here’s a news flash,Marty: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” -1 John 1:8 People of faith know that sanctification (growing in faith) is a lifelong process and won‘t be complete until we’re dead. So please, stop using people’s religion to wave their hypocrisy in their face. They are well aware of it and it is a tiresome ploy of the left. You shamelessly point out the short comings of others, but the reality is, the left has no personal morality standards to live up to. I guess in their world, that makes them above reproach: “I don’t claim any personal morality, thus I can’t be a hypocrite”. Nice. Surly you have heard the admonition “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”, have you not? Apparently you have, but since you don’t believe in the concept for liberals, I guess you’re free to stockpile all the rocks you can carry.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 11:34amAmos37, if you want to use Revelation 22:18-19 to say there can’t be any more of the word of God besides the Bible, then you have to throw out everything after Moses’s books because Moses said the same thing in Deuteronomy 4:2. Nobody takes from the prophecy of John the Revelator in the LDS faith by using the Book of Mormon. In fact, one prophet in the Book of Mormon had a vision of the events of the last days but is specifically told not to write it down because there would be another prophet (John) who would record that revelation. Please also remember that the Bible didn’t exist till hundreds of years after John wrote his revelation. He was only referring to HIS record being added to or diminished. Your own username says God will do nothing unless he reveals his secret to a true and called prophet (Amos 3:7). Prophets reveal God to man and write scripture. It would be a shame to think God loved his children anciently but won’t speak to us anymore. Prophets are real and God does speak to man through them whenever He has a listening people. The Book of Mormon is a record of ancient people that lived on the American continent who had prophets and recorded their dealings with God. Before you condemn the Book of Mormon, you should actually read it and see how it teaches people to come to Christ. Then ask God if it’s true with the intent to act on what God reveals to you. It could be a life changing experience for you.

Thanks for the well written response to Amos37. I didn’t look at his moniker until you pointed it out… that is ironic that he used a scripture that is so highly cited by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. lol. Anyhow, thanks for the great response, but you’ll see soon enough that you might as well get ready to cut and paste that answer a hundred times on this same article since the same argument will be made over and over and over. Regardless of which religion it is, I‘ve always been astounded at how many people don’t have a clue on how the Bible was compiled and by whom, and when.

You clearly don’t understand eschatology. John the Revelator was told by Christ to “Seal up the book”. Meaning there was no more Revelation. All prophecy for the rest of time was given. The apostle Paul warned that if any other person, whether they be men or angels, come preaching a different gospel, let them be accursed! Not my words. Part of the cannonization of scripture was that it could not contradict already cannonized scripture, which the Book of Mormon clearly does and the Book of Revelation does not. In fact, the degree in which the Book of Revelation coincides with Old Testament eschatological prophey is astounding. Particularly the Book of Daniel.
The Bible (the received text) openly claims that Jesus Christ is God the Almighty Creator. That He is part of the Holy Trinity and equal with God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit. Mormons deny that. That is a different gospel than what Paul preached. You’re analogy is misguided.

Where does the Book of Revelation say there will be no more revelation? In fact, where does the Bible say only use the Bible for eschatology? Oak correctly identified how adding to scripture in the Book of Revelation means to not add to the Book of Revelation; not revelation itself and that the Bok of mormon speaks of God’s comandment not to write a revelation for it would be given by John the Revelator. In other words, Oak pointed out that the Book of Mormon does exactly what the Book of Revelation says it should do.
The Book of Revelation says Jesus is part of the Holy Trinity? Where in the world do you get that from? Declaring Jesus as part of the “Holy Trinity” is adding to the Book of Revelation; not anything the Book of Mormon teaches. The Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus is the Creator and the Lord God Omnipotent who took upon himself a “tabernacle of clay” (made flesh). How is this preaching a new gospel?
In Revelations 3:12, Jesus says in first person, “ the temple of my God”, “name of my God”, “city of my God”, and “heaven of my God”. If Jesus and the Father are numerically one being, how can Jesus have a God? And if they numerically one being, how do you conclude such a oneness without anymore revelation given after the Book of Revelation?

Report Post »that statement in the bible was written before other books of the bible, are those books considered false? The book of mormon doesn’t add or take away from those prophesies, but the individual interpretation of the bible by all the various protestant sects do. The books of the bible were never intended to put together in one volume and the context is only relevant when coupled with the traditions of the original church for which the bible was compiled.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 5:04pm@OAK: I‘ve heard similar defenses of Mormonism before but here’s the difference between the Book of Mormon and the Bible. The Bible contains a historical record of the people of Israel in the ancient Middle-East for which there is ample extraneous historical and archaeological evidence. I’ve never heard such evidence ever being set forth outside of the fact of there being an ancient culture on the American Continent which worshiped a Tau symbol, a fact known well before the Book of Mormon was written.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 5:46pm@ Mister July
It appears that you have done little or no research on the topic, so let me educate you. “The Bible contains a historical record of the people of Israel in the ancient Middle-East for which there is ample extraneous historical and archaeological evidence.” Actually, you can substitute Book of Mormon for Bible, and it would be 100% accurate. I could refer you to several modern sources, but I would deprive you of the satisfaction of working to find truth. Let me, however, point you in the right direction. First, take the Book of Mormon, itself. A cursory perusal of the introduction shows that it is in fact “a historical record of the people of Israel”.
So let’s move on to your concern for evidence, which I might add, has always been funny how Christians refer to this, while always squirming when liberals pull the same tactics out of the bag for creationism, miracles, etc. Regardless, I’ll address it for you. The works of Hugh Nibley, as well as the more recent works by George Potter and Richard Wellington, provide clear and convincing evidence for the Book of Mormon’s Middle Eastern origins and textual support. For post-voyage, North American evidence, please reference the vast array of Hebrew artifacts (and DNA agreement) that support the Book of Mormon by way of the Hopewell Indians of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, etc. The evidence directly ties in to LDS theology, providing anecdotal, as well as archaeological, evidence of its divine origins.

If any denomination says that Jesus is the way the truth and the life, that no man cometh unto the Father but by me (Jesus) that should be sufficient for any true believer.
Want to “fight and argue about it”, wait until yolu get to heaven, if you still feel so inclined (or even remember this argument) in the presence of th Most High, then we can talk.
We are to keep the unity (Mark 9)
“All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.” John 13:35
Stop and think about that verse for a minute. Could it be that unity is the key to reaching the world for Christ? . . .Isn’t that what is important – reaching the world for Christ?
Nowhere, by the way, are we told to build unity. We are told simply to keep unity

Mormon‘s don’t deny any of that. We just have different ideas about the nature of said trinity. Ideas, I might add, that are far better substantiated by the bible than the ones that most Christians have. Because our views are so different we use a different label, Godhead, to avoid confusion. It’s still the same three beings though.

The Bible is not one book. It is a compilation of several books. To condemn a religion because they have added books on the sole basis that the end of the book of Revelations says not to add to the “prophecies of this book” isn’t using your noggin. John was saying not to add or take away from the prophecies in the book he was writing. There WAS no Bible at the time; there were holy books. So if a holy book shows up that the compilers of the bible didn’t even know about does that make it not holy just because nobody called it holy back then. It is a fact that holy books are mentioned in the Bible that are not in the Bible. The bible has evolved over the years with different Christian churches accepting or not accepting different books. The Bible as we know it may be holy, but it doesn’t mean that there are not other holy books out there.

If you are waiting for a solid, mainstream Christian candidate who will govern according to all of your own Theological beliefs, you might as well move now. It will never happen.
Either way, if my choice is between Romney and Obama, it is a VERY easy choice. Both have beliefs with which I disagree, but Obama will do WAY more harm to this country with the way he governs than Romney could ever do.

While there are what some call ‘mainstream’ christians who disagree with the theology of the LDS Church, it is unfair, and frankly illogical to not accept them as Christian. They may not accept christian orthodoxy as truth, but orthodoxy does not necessarily define Christianity, only a subset of the same. So first of all, I recommend you take the time to actually use your brain and learn about their Theology. Secondly, use at least a small amount of reason and logic in understanding where they fit in relation to your version of Christianity. Thirdly, understand that we are all in the soup if Obama gets another term. That may pave the way for you to lose even the ‘religion’ you cling to now.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 9:59amHere’s what people need to do to protect themselves: from the coming fire that comes down and out of Heaven – build yourself an Ark out of Gopher wood, pitching it within and without with Pitch. Because when that fire comes down, then those who do not build an Ark, they will be brought very, very, very, very, very, very lowly indeed.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 9:56amHe did this warning for Obama too, right. Did he let Obama know that Thou Shalt not Lie is a commandment and does he fill him on it every time he opens his lying mouth? Has he told Obama the two top things God hates is,1. A proud look (check) and 2. A lying tongue (check). Bashir you better check yourself, before you make an even bigger fool out of yourself.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 9:52amWell, I guess we are supposed to believe Bashir, because he couldn’t be wrong, given that he has such a snooty British accent……

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 9:47amMartin Bashir probably knows far more about lying than he does about the Book of Mormon.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 10:00amBarber, you’ve got that right. I occasionally flip up to channel 185 to check out what BSNBC is churning up from time to time. I’ve noticed that he and Rachel Madcow virtually use a scalpel to split hairs regarding what certain conservatives or Republicans have said. Naturally, Martin’s accusations will never apply to Reid….maybe Beck and a few others, but never to a democrat who is a Mormon. Bashir is so full of himself and has become so transparent in his attempts to demonize members of the right. Silly little man with a cute accent. Looks and acts like he could have been one of those high hatted professors in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back To School” complete with leather elbow patches and a pipe. His might be a bubble pipe though.

Posted on April 20, 2012 at 9:46amI‘m sure Carney will tell us that Barry doesn’t condone using Mitt’s religion against him. Bashir will probably get a half billion dollar green energy loan if Obama gets reelected.
