MSNBC‘s O’Donnell Brutally Roasts Gingrich for ‘Extramarital Sex’

Talk about smug. On MSNBC last night, Lawrence O’Donnell mocked Newt Gingrich by rewriting an interview the former House speaker recently gave to the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN):

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

In their coverage, the Huffington Post and Mediaite both call O‘Donnell’s rewrite of Gingrich’s interview a “parody”–which would be an accurate description if O‘Donnell’s little sendup was actually funny.

By the way, here is what Gingrich actually said in the CBN interview:

There’s no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate. And what I can tell you is that when I did things that were wrong, I wasn’t trapped in situation ethics, I was doing things that were wrong, and yet, I was doing them. I found that I felt compelled to seek God’s forgiveness. Not God’s understanding, but God’s forgiveness

And here is O‘Donnell’s treatment of that statement:

GINGRICH: “There’s question at times of my life–” O’DONNELL: “–specifically when I was leading the attack on Bill Clinton for having extramarital sex–” GINGRICH: “– partially driven by how passionately I felt about–” O’DONNELL: “extramarital sex–” GINGRICH: “that I worked far too hard–” O’DONNELL: “–to make sure that extramarital sexual–” GINGRICH: “–things happened in my life that were not appropriate.” O’DONNELL: “Just like Bill Clinton.”

You can watch the relevant clip from Gingrich’s CBN interview below. As we reported on Wednesday, the mainstream media has already had a bit of a field day distorting aspects of this interview. But if you watch it yourself, I think you’ll see that Gingrich comes across as humble and thoughtful–and there are even moments of sincerity tucked in there:

Take a look at these state congressional protesters? Does the caliber of these people surprise anyone? Nope, it is just the same ole rhetoric in their formula for continuing to drive the state into bankruptcy. I faintly hear, “We have to pass the bill to find out what is in it”! And that made sense to ALL Democrats then!!!

We need only support true Conservatives-
Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, Rand Paul etc.

Newt was wrong for his behavior, he has accepted that and expressed contrition. Clinton lied about his activities, expressed smugness, and then finally asked for forgiveness in a way that said to me he didn’t really see anything wrong in what he did. The big differences were that Clinton was the President and was having sex in the Oval Office while on the phone to foreign dignataries showing flagrant disregard for propriety and security. The only actual crime I remember Clinton being accused of (and convicted for) was perjury when he spent time lying about his actions while on the stand under oath.
I remember disliking Newt a lot during the time that he was Speaker and having his problems. Rercently, however, I’ve been very impressed with him. Not sure yet how I feel about him as President, but think at the moment he might be the best choice.

I”m glad that Newt is getting trashed by the MSM. We need a candidate whose family life and professional life are both squeeky clean. Force the opposition to eat crow every time they try to make an accusation that has no evidence to support said accusation. Newt has his second chance by us respecting his viewpoint. However his political career is over. I can’t emphasize enough on how much we need a candidate that is squeaky clean. The right candidate is out there and as long as we don’t allow the media to choose our candidate for us we will choose the right candidate. Newt is NOT that guy. Neither is Mitt Romney. Come on Tea Party. Paul Broun is a much better candidate than Newt or Mitt and I’m confident that The Tea Party can come up with others that are better than Newt and Mitt. Stop letting the media manipulate whom the GOP should choose to run against little barry.

Ron Paul and Rand Paul both would clean his clock, intellectually.

I don’t know the guy from Adam, but I do know that I could never trust a person who habitually cheats on his wife-du-jour (1980 first wife and then the mid 1990′s against his second wife). I do think he did some good work politically during the Clinton years, but I’m sorry, the guy is damaged goods. While nobody should expect perfection, we can and should do better than to accept a serial philanderer.

I am not sure about the presidency, but only The Lord Our God knows the heart of a man. If he says he has sought forgiveness and found it, who am I to say he has not. We can judge the fruit a tree bears and let’s see what fruit Speaker Gingrich bears going forward. Just remember what a man named Saul did before his conversion. I won’t speak for Jesus, but that is how I think he would recommend we approach no only the speaker, but anyone.

Okay, but if you or I were in Court to answer charges that we did something illegal, and somebody started questioning us about something embarrassing but perfectly legal like having sex with a consenting adult and concealing it from a spouse, we would never have to answer. No such line of questioning would ever be allowed anywhere in the U.S. except the floors of Congress where once your sworn in, they can make you answer any question they want whether it’s any of their business or not.

Bottom line, both man are far from admirable, but Gingrich is worse because he’s a hypocrite. Bill Clinton never tried to have Newt removed from office.

Respectable Politician is an oxymoron! Sometimes to be a good leader you have to do things that are morally suspect. Say your a manager and someone that works for you is a single mother of three kids. Say that person comes to work late all the time. You should fire her for the good of the company, as that is your job. Morality would tell you not to, so she can continue to feed her kids. Or say your the president and you need to invade a country that is a threat. Morallity would tell you not to because your putting people in harms way and you know innocent civilians are going to die. But you have to do it, because protecting the US is your job.

Those conservatives who value fidelity in marriage are divided from those who are willing to forgive. A divided base is not going to put him into the White House. Newt would be more effective as an advisor, not POTUS.

      @Conservative Hippy

I don’t think those examples are very good. Letting a woman keep her job because of her bad circumstances isn’t amoral. Going to war when necessary isn’t amorl. Now, if you should fire a single mother for being late, but you sleep with her instead. That would be a good example of a moral issue.

Sarah Palin would be an example of a good politician. She’s made mistakes, but who doesn’t? What Newt did wasn’t a mistake. It wasn’t like he slept with someone, then realized it wasn’t actually his wife. That’s would be a mistake.
