Campus Shock: Michigan Professor Actually Takes Nude Pictures…With Students

EAST LANSING, Mich. (The Blaze/AP) — A Michigan State University associate professor’s nude photographs that show him posing with students — both clothed and nude — have prompted questions about art and ethics among some associated with the school.

Danny Guthrie’s work is well-known by campus officials, who have reviewed the issue, The Detroit News reported Wednesday. But coverage by The State News student newspaper drew recent attention at the East Lansing campus to Guthrie’s photos, which depict the 65-year-old teacher bare-chested in some photos, while in others he’s fully clothed. Guthrie poses with male and female students, faculty and colleagues and often is touching them.

In an email to The Detroit News, Guthrie, whose biography on the university’s website says he has been a faculty member there for 13 years, declined an interview and wrote: “It is not a great climate for being edgy in the area of sexuality.”

But, The State News did have an account from Guthrie about his work:

Guthrie said the photographs are based on famous works of art throughout history and represent how individuals interact.

“[The photographs are] about my loss of youth and impending doom,” he said. “Once you give up when you get older, you don’t live in a sexual arena anymore.”

Because he is retiring at the end of this year, Guthrie said he felt the need to seize his opportunity to work with students and decided to continue his work creating collaborative nude photographs.

“I want (viewers) to be compelled by the image and to care if they can get past any initial shock value,” he said.

The school has determined there’s a protocol in place so students do not feel pressured to participate, Heather Swain, interim vice president for university relations, said in a statement. She said Guthrie does not recruit students currently enrolled in his classes to model for photographs.

Here’s what The State News reported of how Guthrie acquires models:

To create his art, Guthrie said he approaches students he feels would be open to the project. He then emails images he would like to recreate for the student to view, and the student describes what poses he or she is comfortable with.

Reactions to Guthrie’s photography differ. Guthrie recalled one students’ anonymous comment declaring he or she would not enroll in a photography class for fear of having Guthrie as a professor. He said he isn’t surprised by the negative feedback but sometimes is hurt by the harsh level of the comments.

“I want people to think, but I don’t want them to get angry,” he said. “I don’t want to make my students uncomfortable.”

“Sometimes art, and the means by which it is expressed, evokes strong responses — both for and against it. In situations where the art relates to an academic activity, MSU’s main concern is to maintain the integrity of the teaching and learning environment,” Swain’s statement said.

Laura Merrihew of the southern Michigan community of Brooklyn has a daughter who attends Michigan State. She has been lobbying university officials to stop Guthrie‘s photos after a relative showed her a column written by a student challenging Guthrie’s work.

“This man has breached the bounds of the student-professor relationship,” Merrihew said. “His pictures are sexually motivated and they are taking advantage of the students. There are several with totally nude girls that he’s holding and touching.

“To think that he is participating in this and not thinking: ‘What good luck I have to be able to do this and get away with this.’”

Others, however, have defended Guthrie’s photographs. Henry Brimmer, an assistant professor in Michigan State’s Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing, said those raising questions don’t understand that Guthrie is a serious artist.

“His work is gorgeous, it is beautiful, it is well done, it has significance,” Brimmer said.

Those who choose to participate are volunteers, Swain said, and they determine the extent of their participation and approve the final photographs. She noted in an email Wednesday that the university has not received complaints from participants.

“While we understand the shock value of Professor Guthrie’s art, it is not sexual harassment and does not violate university policies. Whether students, as adults, choose to model for him is not something the university can or should control,” she said.

Michael Hersrud, a former Michigan State assistant professor in graphic design, said he chose to pose with a female faculty member. Now an assistant professor for Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, he said via email that Guthrie’s work challenges perceptions of art and media.

“A painting of a nude figure prior to photography was not always viewed as ”art,” but over time we have come to accept this nude painting as a work of art,” Hersrud said.

Every single one of the people in those photos has gone through puberty and has reached the age of consent. I’d classify this as lousy erotica, not even pornography… He’s trying to portray sexuality with artist aspirations (even if he’s awful at it). If this arouses your disgust, perhaps there are some Renaissance masterpieces you’d like to see done away with… Some of those depicting Hell are FAR more graphic (and vastly superior as works of art) and there are depictions of naked children on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Deluge panel. Is that pedophiliac pornography? Shall we paint over it? Something….off-white perhaps?

      As an artist, poet & songwriter, I understand what the professor is attempting to accomplish. However, his own words convict him:
      “I want people to think, but I don’t want them to get angry,” he said. “I don’t want to make my students uncomfortable”, he says. But how can he expect this to be inoffensive to all. And refrain from causing discomfort to everyone? Sorry, I’m not buying that. More likely he is selfish & unconcerned about others’ feelings.

      You can do nudes without being overtly sexual. I wondered about the one in the background of him carrying a woman, that’s ALMOST art, but the others are too sexual.       Since in art appreciation we learn that it is the viewers, not the artist who determine what is art, we can therefore define this as NOT being aorks of art. “Artists” forget that and try then to say instead that they are simply excercising their freedom of speech.       This isn’t pedophilia. They are all over 18 and consenting adults. If they were minors, I’d throw him in jail. I don’t really like this type of photography. I am a professional photographer and I am ok with boudoir pictures, which has become very trendy, but this just doesn’t say anything to me. It doesn‘t seem like there’s an obvious statement or reason. Maybe that’s just me and others see something totally different, but I don’t care for it that much. I guess maybe the guy is retiring soon so he finally took his shot at seeing students naked. LOL

      The thing is… we aren’t privy to the really good ones. They are described as being full nudity with the professor‘s head and hands touching students’ parts. Now me, as an art major with a graphic design degree 20+ years ago, this still strikes me as strange with a tinge of sad rolled in.

      Clearly the students are of college age, they may even be of graduate school age. They are doing what they are doing of their own free will. Call it “art” if he wishes, but you know in the back of his mind he was hoping that this was a “turn on” to some degree for the students and it might just grow into something else… you know, in his last year in teaching.

      People create art because of an emotional response to something happening in their lives. Sometimes they create art to produce an emotional response in the viewer. Sometimes they create art to have sex with the model(s).

    Actually they aren’t bad at all… as in the quality. There are hundreds if not thousands of other professors nationwide in Philosophy, Science, Mathematics and more that are nothing but a bunch of positivist leaning progressive tool bags that don’t even understand they are destroying young minds. This professor’s work is compelling, not the other way around.

      Speaking as somebody that doesn’t really have a “horse in the race”, they strike me as being trite and nonchalant while being overwrought. That may not be very clear, but I can only compare them to someone “overacting” in a really poorly written movie.
      William Shatner would probably love them.
      Bonus points for being in focus, however.

      Like I said … compelling. Does that mean the knowledge the pictures stir up will all be positive about this man? Nope. Why is he in every shot? Perhaps he‘s the type of director that likes to be in every scene which wouldn’t make for that good of a movie. Then again, watch the movie Aunt Mame, if the lead actress Rosalind Russel, that was in every scene, had been the director as well whew, what an amazing woman! Art has declined significantly since then, both in moving and still pictures – compelling yet again. Perhaps our professor is just self-centered with some delusions of grandeur; perhaps regret of a misplaced career all culminating in a spree before his retirement (he alludes to as much) – motivation for the creation of a piece of work, compelling again. What I do know is this isn’t perverted work. I can see some ready to press the censorship button, tisk tisk. Some of these shots are fairly artistic and made me think of other paintings and the idea to mimic those paintings in still shot is actually a pretty good idea, though I’m not sure if he came up with the idea. It makes me want to know more about where the idea came from. If all you see is perversion, well, the thoughts reside in your mind too, why do you think perversion right off the bat? Take a chill pill, you do not have to look at the works, you were not forced to click this link to the story.

      You make valid points on the few examples given of his work. I do find his being the focus of the work Unsettling though. With each picture my eye is drawn to him first then to the rest of the content which I do not think from the grading of Good Art and Above should Do. He works should be called “Ode to Self”
