MTV‘s Newest Teen Hit Faces Child Pornography Accusations

MTV‘s Newest Teen Hit Faces Child Pornography Accusations

MTV

I‘m somewhat familiar with MTV’s programming line-up, which includes “reality” shows about teen moms, teens living glamorous and carefree lives in Hollywood and hopelessly stereotypical New Jersey teens.  So when I read the news that the cable network was being investigated for possible child pornography, I wasn’t incredibly surprised.

The show in question is called “Skins” and premiered Monday to more than 3 million viewers. To give you an idea of the show’s content, the first episode opened with a young teen girl trying to sneak home after an all-night bender without tipping off her parents.

The series premiere alone included sex, drug-dealing, alcohol, prescription drug abuse, sex, prostitution, smoking, homosexuality, violence, car theft, voyeurism and more sex. In fact, the entire premise of the first episode was how the group would get their 16-year-old friend to lose his uncool virginity before his 17th birthday. And after the kids’ friend wakes up from her drug overdose and their stolen car full of illegal drugs rolls and crashes into a lake, the kids laugh it off. The end.*

*If you think I’m exaggerating, feel free to click here and watch — it’s available for anyone to watch online, anytime.

I think many parents would likely be outraged, that is if they pay close attention to what it is their kids are watching on television each night.

(Warning: Video contains graphic images & language.  Viewer discretion is advised.)

All smut aside, MTV is a cable network and not held to the same standards as network television. But the Parents Television Council is calling on lawmakers and law enforcement officials to open an investigation regarding possible child pornography and exploitation on “Skins.” The youngest cast member on the show is just 15 years old.

“On January 17, the Viacom-owned cable network MTV aired a teenager-based drama, ‘Skins.’ The episode included all manner of foul language, illegal drug use, illegal activity as well as thoroughly pervasive sexual content,” PTC President Tim Winter said in a letter sent to the chairmen of the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary Committees and the Department of Justice. “Many of the actors appearing in the show are below the age of 18. It is clear that Viacom has knowingly produced material that may well be in violation of [several] federal statutes.”

“Since it is not necessary for Viacom or MTV to distribute the material in order to be in violation of the law, we call upon your committees to immediately investigate Viacom and MTV for the production of this material,” Winter said in the statement. “Furthermore, we urge you in the strongest possible terms to compel the attorney general to mount an investigation by the Department of Justice into whether the production of ‘Skins’ has violated federal law meant to protect minors from exploitation.”

Ian Friedman, an attorney specializing in computer-based sex offenses, told Fox News that he believes MTV is “unnecessarily tempting fate.”

“It is not clear as to whether MTV is in violation of federal or state child pornography laws, but that does not mean that they won’t end up defending themselves somewhere in the United States,” Friedman said, noting that attitudes toward nudity and sexuality are far more lax in the show’s native England.

Since public outcry started to stir, MTV executives have held meetings and discussed the possibility of editing out some of the more explicit footage from future episodes. But even this action may not be enough to protect the network from legal consequences, Friedman said.

“While the images that are portrayed on television may be considered legal, that may not be the case for the edited footage,” he said. “If that actor is underage and under the age of consent, possessing that raw footage may be problematic.”

In a statement released Thursday, MTV defended its new show.

“‘Skins’ is a show that addresses real-world issues confronting teens in a frank way. We review all of our shows and work with all of our producers on an ongoing basis to ensure our shows comply with laws and community standards. We are confident that the episodes of ‘Skins’ will not only comply with all applicable legal requirements, but also with our responsibilities to our viewers. We also have taken numerous steps to alert viewers to the strong subject matter so that they can choose for themselves whether it is appropriate.‬”

“Skins” is rated TV-MA. According to tvguidelines.org, a TV-MA rating signifies that the program “is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17.”

Update:
Fox News discussed the show Thursday evening, with host Bill O’Reilly and his “culture warriors” weighing in:

Update II: “Skins” is apparently too racy for Taco Bell — the fast food chain has pulled all its advertising support from the show.

If that show was around when we were still in those crazy years, we would have self-destructed in 10 days or less. It would have been like pouring gas on gas. And if it’s supposed to be some kind of “out” or “conciliation prize” for those kids having to live through all this 2012 crap, the line “it’s better to burn out than fade away” has been around a lot longer, and it doesn’t end pretty. Whether you are on this side, or the next.

I’m embarrassed that this garbage is filmed in Canada. The only excuse is that it’s cheaper than filming in the US. BTW, Skins is a British TV show, started a few years ago. There really are some things that should stay in Europe.

Perhaps one of the reasons why the MTV version of “Skins” is filmed in Canada is that fiming here in the U.S. would get them all arrested for producing child porn?

That’s why we all have the capability to block channels now. It’s up to us as parents. I don’t blame the networks. They just put on what ever makes them the most money. That’s capitalism. We make the choice to not watch. If WE don’t let our kids watch, they lose the add money, and the show goes away. There will always be garbage on tv. Sounds like this show crossed a line however. Now blocked on the TV’s in my house.

Now THAT is libertarian thinking! Thank you for pointing out that the best way to eliminate the crap on tv is to NOT support it by NOT watching it.
Another way is to note who the sponsors are and tell these people that you aren’t buying their products because their advertising supports a morally offensive program (libertarians can be morally offended, but we don’t use the government to force our viewpoints on others…see the dif?)

so, not really about a child porn case… you could’ve said that at the beginning, but the spin-work is well done Meredith. besides, why let kids see real world issues. I’d of course have to see the show to see if the show involves any morals such as…oh maybe… the bad stuff having…whats the word… consequences. then I’ll (for myself) decide if it’s smut. sorry if I sound irratated, but this kind of rubish journalism is part of the problem. the real world isn’t “leave it to beaver.” I know because I live there, in fact my name (Planet Xenu) is more of a joke directed towards that mentality.

Right on brah. MTV totally teaches kids about the real world. Jersey Shore shows kids who to responsibly tan, responsibly drink, how to go about sexual intercourse in the proper ways, as well as how to do laundry. AMIRIGHT?? GTL GYM TAN LAUNDRY! And skins totally teaches kids the hardships and consequences of being a teenager. Tough times. Teen mom and 16 and pregnant doesn’t at all show cocky 16 year old girls who feel the are entitled to the world and know everything about life. Then of course MTV has the actual show Real World which certainly teaches us about the real world. Living in a million dollar house with a job provided for you and party and drinking every night. How MTV hasn’t been recognized for all their great programming and life skills teachings in beyond me. People can’t recognize a good, scratch that, GREAT thing such as MTV and their programming.

Don’t forget about spring break too!!

Or their promoting of the shows 16 and pregnant which turned into teen mom which turned into teen mom 2. I can see all the kids submitting their videos trying to get on these shows. Way to go MTV. UNTAMEABLE KATE, Bless your heart. I’m sure your son is a good and moral young man, but, let’s not be naive. Boys will be boys, regardless of what their Mom and Dad think. Teenagers and younger kids can see anything on the internet, anything sexually orientated is displayed in living color. All kids have a natural urge of curiosity and will stray a little to the prohibited side to satisfy their curiosities. This can be both positive and negative for their healthy physical, mental and sexual developement.
I‘m now in my mid 70’s and when I was an adolescent there was no TV or internet but there were those little” hush-hush” paper booklets with explicit sexual content. Did I look at them, of course, like the other 99.99% of the other boys. Did my Mom think that “I” would do such a thing ? Of course not, she was my Mom.

Why is it that “conservatives” (and i use that term very loosely) like Gretchen Carlson and Bill scream 24/7 about government staying out of free speech unless it conflicts with their “morality”. How is this any different than the ‘fairness doctrine’? If you are a true parent, than this show will be just as much of a root cause of your child turning into a drug using sex fiend, that talk radio was a root cause of that psychopath in Arizona shooting all those people. Watch the double standard. Raise your own children. Just because it doesn’t align with your morality, doesn’t mean it needs to be regulated.

And for the record, TThe US version of Top Gear is pretty good :)

MTV’s recent showing of “Skins” shouldn’t be a shocking experience to any American cable TV and network TV watcher. Sex and more sex is promoted on nearly all the shows these days. Well, we’ve definitely come a log way since Clark Gabel uttered the first curse word in a movie, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”.
Once the door was opened, the filth came pouring into our living rooms via TV and video cassete tapes. We Americans are so calloused to “smut ” that little or nothing we see on TV , in the movies or elsewhere raises an eyebrow. Any protest now is simply too little, too late !

Noodle Fish- American‘s don’t “steal” shows. The creators of the shows realize there is far more money to be made by having different versions in different countries than by just selling the “re-runs.” It’s called capitalism.

To Exdem: Trump was on Hanity the other night on radio. Didn’t hear it all, but he did say that the first thing he would do is eliminate our debt to China by charging a 25% export tax on everything being shipped here from China.

They shouldn’t hire 15 year olds for it. Hire an 18 year old that looks like their 15, problem solved. Haha

Am I to believe that Sara Plain can use a phrase and cause someone to commit crimes, but MTV has no responsibility for anything they do?
Remember when Tipper Gore wanted to get ratings on violent video games and movies and rap music?
She was universally criticized in Hollywood. “There is no evidence that movies, games, music have any effect on kids.
But now Sara Plain is the worst influence ever. With a true comment.

Let’s see how MTV spins this one!!

These producers somehow think they are addressing teen issues, not all I add, hitting them “right between the eyes, or head on!” Well, there is one thing these pinheads don’t realize….CRAP ON TV GETS SO SENSATIONALIZED BY THE “TEEN” CROWD AND THESE ACTORS BECOME HEROES TO THE KIDS…AND GUESS WHAT???? I bet someone can tell me….??

Well NSblues, that’s not really true at all. We DO steal British shows, (with permission) and our versions, which are simply copies with hotter actors and American accents, lack the originality of the originals! America seems to be at a statistically low point in it’s media history, even worse than the very first presidential elections where you had Thomas Jefferson calling John Adams a filthy cur, and what-not. (or was it the other way around?)

I’ll admit I was only scanning this particular article, because I read it first on another site that didn‘t mention the show’s origin.

I graduated high school in 1987 and this show isn’t much different than my own teenage experiences. Seems I recall the same outrage at a move called Fast Times at Ridgemont High for the same reasons. Somehow we all survived.

Faux News strikes again.
