Mubarak: ‘If I Resign Today, There Will Be Chaos’

After an exclusive sit-down with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, ABC News’ Christiane Amanpour reported Thursday that the tarnished leader is troubled by the violent turmoil spreading through his country’s capital city, but believes his government bears no responsibility for it. Instead, Mubarak blames the Muslim Brotherhood, a banned political party, for instigating the violence.

Mubarak: If I Resign Today, There Will Be Chaos

Mubarak announced this week that he would not seek reelection in the fall, hoping his decision would help to quell the protests. But many protesters are demanding he step down from the country’s highest position effective immediately and have vowed to continue their protest campaign until he does. According to Amanpour, Mubarak would happily step down, but fears his resignation would only spur further chaos.

“I don’t care what people say about me. Right now I care about my country, I care about Egypt,” Mubarak said.

In addition, the Egyptian president said he was “very unhappy” to see his supporters clashing with anti-government protesters in Cairo’s liberation square, adding that he didn’t want to see “Egyptians fighting each other.”

Mubarak and his family remain barricaded inside the presidential palace, heavily guarded by armed troops, tanks and barbed wire. Despite the contentious unrest beyond the palace walls, Mubarak said he would never run away, insisting that he will die on Egyptian soil.

Mubarak was also asked to respond to President Barack Obama’s calls for him to step down immediately. “You don’t understand the Egyptian culture,” he said, “and what would happen if I step down now.”

Do those of you that opine that this is somehow some real big deal for the US really believe that? I think you’ve sucked up too much of the “conventional wisdom”. The entire ME can go to hell in a handbasket and it will effect us very little. Pull out everything, every asset, from the ME and from Europe. Let them stew in their own hatred and ignorance. Let’s concentrate our passion and efforts on our Republic. When they make the mistake of crossing the Atlantic we will deal with them on our terms.

Yes they’ll get right on that when Barry turns the oil on in the gulf and we concentrate on energy without aid from the Persian Gulf. Also, there is a little canal that affects us and our allies. You see since everything is made in China now. For so many of us and those goods travel through that channel it is a very big deal for US and allies. While we are at it we will have to reroute trade lanes and oil outputs will have to come from somewhere else as they will sell to China and leave us in the cold (sorta speak)

We have, shall I say, a vested interest in Egypt as we have pumped a ton of cash into this country over the years. We want their freedom, but we also should strive to have them as an ally or at best vested friendship.

That is why it is a big deal, that is why it affects us and this is the major pitfall for a global economy.

Mubarak is correct. Would Obama run for the hills, if one million people gathered in Washington DC and began chanting for Obama to leave office? Mubarak has to get the rioters under control and then begin the transition of power.

Given Egypt’s history, Mubarak might not be talking out his wazoo.

Since a revolution overthrew their king in 1952, Egypt has allowed only one political party to exist: the National Democratic Party. It’s basically a socialist party, of which Mubarak is the current head. Until just a few weeks ago, Egypt was a member of the Arab Socialist League.

The reason Egypt allows only one political party since the revolution is because, under British rule, a multi-party system was too-easily corrupted. So they started their new government with only one allowable organization.

Egypt has been ruled under emergency law since 1967, except for a short period during the Eighties. The parliament elects the president over there, in referenda instead of by direct popular vote.

Gamel Abdel Nasser, second president, had a vision for pan-Arab unity and nationalism. With Egypt at the head, of course. While his leadership came into question after the Six Day War, the idea of unity remains favorable to this day. Toss in the rise of hard-line Islamism, and the world is looking at a serious problem. Varied nationalities, and the rule of dictators wanting to hold their own power, kept Nasser’s dream from coming to fruition during his lifetime. Now, though, under the force of hard-line religion, unification is a possibility.

Anwar Sadat originally tried to follow in Nasser’s footsteps, but the 1973 Yom Kippur War compelled him to relent. That got Egypt thrown out of some other pan-Arab league and later cost Sadat his life. Mubarak is simply the most recent president in that line of succession.

Of course he’s corrupt as hell, personally worth $30 billion. To join the coalition in the 1993 Gulf War, he got Europe and the US to forgive Egypt $14 billion in debt. Mubarak then paid off soldiers, allegedly as much as $500K each to top people.

While the world needs to get rid of petty dictators, I see high risk even a short political vacuum over there will allow hard-line mullahs to take over, turning Egypt into an Islamic republic. You can be sure Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranians are in the mix of protests.

No, I don’t have any solutions. But I don’t think American leftists are doing any good, because most of their ‘solidarity’ seems to lie with the Muslim Brotherhood. Cutting off all American aid, including food, is a totally bad idea, I believe.

The only thing of which I’m certain is that Egypt is a mess with no easy fix.

Sadat had a plan to bring into Cairo, many (millions) of people in the nation, to increase their education levels, help begin to produce industries, build on the current industries, and increase Egypt in the ‘value-chain’ of the Middle East. The people had already begun coming in when Sadat was assassinated, and his dreams went away with Mubarack. Cairo nearly quadrupled in size as a result, without the infrastracture Sadat was going to establish, and thus millions are in poverty level in Cairo. I have been there (it has been a few years now) but, they have a gazallion places like “the city of the dead” 250,000 people living in graveyards with literally cardboard and tin for their houses.

When Fox News reports that one of Mubarak’s supporters threatened to behead somebody, I BELIEVE Mubarak. The MB is pretending to be supporters in order to tarnish Mubarak. In 30 years, we never heard of the Egyptian police or military beheading anybody, but it IS commanded in the Koran and is one of the Jihadis preferred methods of killing. Daniel Pearl, et. al.

One hope for the West and peace loving people in the Middle East is to learn about the Pre-Abrahamic history which has just recently been available due to advances in carbon dating of archeology and artifacts. Also how Islam is reconstituted pagan worship under the guise of a monotheistic religion. All this is made clear in this historic interview on Israel National Radio:

Fertlmind……You were being sarcastic right? You didn’t really mean it when you said “Israel should blast Iran now..” right? I sincerely hope you were joking.

For Israel to “blast Iran now” over a conflict that was started in Egypt over the Egyptian government would be a call for the next world war. Israel has been very wise in the way they have chosen to deal with this crisis: silence. If they open their mouth now, no matter what words come out, it would be seen in the Islamic middle east as a taunt, threat or instigation of war. We are Israel’s voice right now, and we must speak for them and defend them to the utmost of our capability. To expect such a tiny nation IN THE MIDDLE OF A CHAOTIC MIDDLE EAST to “blast first,” and at IRAN out of all countries, is simply ludicrous! The second the word IRAN comes out of Israel’s mouth is the second that Ahmadinejad unlocks his underground lockers of nuclear arsenal and allows him to fulfill his fanatical dreams of wiping the infidel off the map.

It’s about strategy right now, and as we all know from the Six Day War, Israel is a master of strategic action. The BEST thing Israel can do right now is remain silent and let US deal with situation. While some people think Israel should “step up” and protect itself or that we should not have their back so to speak since most of the Jewish people are progressive democrats is plain wrong. The Jews of Israel are the Lord’s chosen people, yet they remain of Jewish faith and deny that Jesus will return, that doesn’t mean that the Lord has turned his back on His people and broken his promises to them.

Let’s not break our promises to Israel right now, we would be stabbing one of our closest allies right in the heart. The radical Muslims are just salivating at the mouth to get the chance to bring the second Holocaust (which by the way they deny ever happened) to the Israelis, Israel knows this, and thus are watching vigilantly but remaining SILENT!

no….chaos is what you have now. Revolution, anarchy, destruction is what you will have without an effective leader in the country.

Idiot…Israel will NEVER be gone. God Himself will protect them. Read the Bible. But I doubt you can understand end times…

Israel can turn that whole place into glass if they desire..

If he had stepped down during the first or second of the protest, when it was peaceful, there would have been no chaos. He sent in his counter-protesters and behold, CHAOS! He is a dictator. He will have to be forced out or captured by the opposition. If he had fled, the people of Egypt would have settled down.

I love the fact that so many of the protest signs have been professionally lettered, in English! If oil and food prices, as well as employment do not ease, Egypt today is what the streets of many large cities here in the US will look like before Obama leaves office. The only problem is that those demonstrations will be supporting the Obama regime!

      “News Flash” There’s already “chaos”.
This proves social justice doesn’t work.

CURATOR-JDR, great point, as usual. Many other good posts as well. Things are really going down hill fast over there. Mubarak is starting to look better and better. Shadows of Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood, getting a bad feeling about this.

Whose side are we going to take on this thing? Both sides, the government and the people, are Muslim so both are evil. Enough said. The Koran says that if a woman cheats on her husband, she will be stoned to death. Of course the Bible says the same, but that‘s in the Old Testament and those weren’t really the Words of the Christian God, just some misguided people with pen and paper. We only believe in the New Testament.

So, okay, both sides are evil. But are they equally evil? Beck says that Mubarak is good, because he is opposed by some obscure group called the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization unknown to the world until Beck shed light on them (like the omnipresent Piven and Soros) and a group who is also busy establishing Sharia Law in this country, and who would have done so already, were it not for the valiant and unflagging efforts of the Tea Party. Go Tea Party!

So Beck has thrown his lot in with the dictator, against the Egyptian populace. And so shall we. Beck stuck his flag in that one. Let all Americans stick their flag in the same fertile soil, as many times as needed, over and over, until the flag bears the fruit of patriotism.

Yes, if Mubarak resigned immediately there will be chaos, and the radicals will fill the void.
