A disgruntled fired women’s accessories designer shot and killed a former coworker Friday morning before engaging in a shootout with police outside the Empire State Building that left nine others wounded, New York City officials said.

Police shot and killed the gunman, identified as 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson. The nine people wounded shortly after 9 a.m. on the Fifth Avenue side of the Empire State Building were expected to survive, police said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Johnson had been laid off one year ago from Hazan Imports and targeted a former colleague, shooting the man in the head at close range with a .45-caliber pistol.

A construction worker followed the gunman as he left the premises on foot and walked toward the Empire State Building with the gun in his bag, Kelly said. The worker notified uniformed police officers stationed near the building. Kelly said Johnson pulled his gun from his bag and officers opened fire, shooting and killing him.

It was not clear if Johnson actually fired his gun in front of the building. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said some of the victims struck by bullets may have been accidentally shot by police officers during the shootout.

WABC-TV reported many of the shooting victims were hit in the lower body, including the legs.

Fox News employee Jacque Boothby said she witnessed the shooting outside the Empire State Building and counted four gunshots as she was walking on the sidewalk.

“I heard gunshots and people started running. I wasn’t sure if it was gunshots or just the normal noises of New York City. I just looked around and people were laying on the sidewalk,” Boothby said.

She said she saw a total of four people hit by bullets, including one woman who “actually fell at my feet.” She said she did not see the gunman.

After the shots, Boothby said the crowd “fled…as far away as they could get from 34th Street.”

Fox News reported tenants were allowed back into the Empire State Building at approximately 9:40 a.m.

President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting shortly after 9:30 a.m., ABC News reported.

A police source told Reuters the shooting had no apparent link to terrorism.

No, but thanks to southern states along I95, New Yorkers are shoot. The problem is the lax gun laws of Virgina, Florida, etc., the unregulated gun show sales and loop hole large enough to nullify the laws.

I guess the truth is to hard for the simple minds of the Blaze to understand. The majority of guns get into NY from states where the guns laws are lax along the I95 route. http://www.atf.gov/statistics/download/trace-data/2011/2011-trace-data-new-york.pdf http://articles.nydailynews.com/2012-03-01/news/31112098_1_gun-laws-gun-limit-crime-guns

Guns don’t magically appear, guns are legally purchased down south and resold on the streets of NY. The investigations of Bloomberg show that the greatest threat to national security is the gun show loop hole. Corrupt so called private dealers, will ignore the law to sell a personal arsenal, provided they have enough greenbacks. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/01/31/bloomberg-gun-sting-shows-purchases-background-checks/

Encimon, so you cannot even have a mind of your own but have to repeat what Bloomberg said once: crime in NY city is caused by the lesser gun laws in the South.
Guess what Mr., in the South we live a better life without big brother watching how criminals attack innocent people and do nothing to prevent it or punish it. In the South we look after each other and we take care of ourselves. Even Police in the South recognize that criminals do not dare to come into people’s houses because they now what they will have to face: a barrel.
And we have to defend our selves outside our houses, he have all the right to do it.

Using Obama’s own twisted logic (and actually more sound than Obama’s), Obama has this blood on his hands. If he were not so inept and had not created 20% unemployment, this would have never happened. Instead of banning guns, let’s ban economic morons, AKA Democrats, from holding office and stop the damage they do to America. Instead, Presidente’ Dumbo Ears just goes along and claims an 8% unemployment and the media doesn’t even question the numbers. Obama’s economy drove this man to do this. Oh the humanity. There should be riots in the streets … blah blah … While much of this post is intentionally and patently absurd, this is the type of logic the Democrats are using. Guns are purchased LEGALLY in VA and other places (which is a horrible argument trying to say it’s other places fault), the vast majority of guns being used by criminals to harm others are obtained ILLEGALLY. If it was true that gun laws =safe then Detroit, NY, D.C., L.A., Chicago would be the safest places on earth.

What part of the criminals will have guns no matter what don’t you understand? Please go talk to some guys on death row who have used guns to harm others. Ask them if the law ( which is just the opinion of some bureaucrat) magically stopped them from harming people. If you are thick headed I can’t help you. I can’t fix stupid.

And by “lax” gun laws you mean people are allowed to buy firearms after the waiting period and background check. And taking guns across state lines without registering and going through the proper paper work is illegal. But criminals don’t care about laws do they.

Gun control advocates willfully over look the obvious fact that gun control laws only effect law abiding citizens and criminals couldn’t care less about your stupid laws.

They both want to make you do something. They both are out to take whatever they want from you, as often as they want. They are not afraid to take your life if needed. Since I am afraid of both, I am armed. When guns are outlawed, I may well become an outlaw too.

Blacks make up 12% of the US population, and commit 50% of the nations shootings. That also means that around 50% of those murdered are black males, and ENCINOM does not want that trend to slow down.

Gun Show guns are less than 2% of the guns used in crimes.

The problem isn’t lax gun laws… The problem you have a idiot with a firearm. If a firearm is responsible for deaths, then pencils are responsible for mispellings. Either way you look at it… If a person is wanting to kill or do harm to someone, they’re going to do it.. Firearm, sharp knives.. pointy sticks.. . Oh.. Last I remembered… Murder is against the law as well… The gunman didnt seem to care about that law either..

Hold on now, gang. Encinom does allude to a legitimate issue with regard to legal vs. illegal gun purchasing: Straw purchases. This is a practice I have a problem with. Hell, I’ve seen Hispanic fellows in local gun stores drooling over handguns and then attempt to obtain said handgun by sending in their fat, white girlfriends to purchase the pistola in question. Thankfully, gun dealers aren’t generally greedy, stupid morons. Being a greedy, stupid moron tends to put your legal ability to trade in firearms into questin. But, hey, didn’t we just have this exposed as okay with the current US DOJ and the ATF? It seems your moment of high dudgeon is misplaced as there is no indication the nut in this instance is an example of your knee-jerk assumption.
Come on, be honest. You’re disgusted by ANY civilian gun rights/ownership. Isn’t it odd that progessives pine for a neo-feudalism? Disarm the state (NOT the military) and I may switch to the bow and sling. ‘Til then, if the state’s packing heat, I’ll keep my little collection.

I got it! – Under his gun laws – bad guys with guns are not the threat – only LAW ABIDING citizens are a threat when armed. SOOO – A law abiding citizen shot people illegally. ?Wait? Wouldnt that make the armed citizen a criminal? And if he is a criminal, wouldn’t he no longer be concidered a law abiding citizen – who was armed? And since he is now a criminal, he obviously would never break the law – so how did a criminal get a gun in Bloombergs city?

      Liberal argument is
The NYC, Chicago & Washington D.C., because bordering areas have laxer gun laws & can be imported. Therefore their fix is to make guns uniformly unattainable. There will not look at statistics at how many crimes guns in the hands of law abiding armed citizens prevent. They will not collect such statistics purposely making it harder to argue such facts. they will merely repeat their mantra of guns leaking into their gun free zones for other areas.

Similarly, France‘s answer for its’ economic woes were for all Eurozone countries to tax at a high rate. It had a beef with Ireland for its’ lower tax rates. It wants to harmonize taxes at a high rate instead of a low rate. Therefore people cannot vote with their feet. France only did as well as they did in the last 1/2 century because they played a currency manipulation game of devaluing their currency. Impossible to do when they use the Euro, therefor the harsh rhetoric from the French Socialists. They see the writing on the wall.

      Trav,

And where are your statistics on NYC crime?

“Starting in 2005, New York City achieved the lowest crime rate among the ten largest cities in the United States.[12] Since 1991, the city has seen a continuous fifteen-year trend of decreasing crime. Neighborhoods that were once considered dangerous are now much safer. Violent crime in the city has dropped by three quarters in the twelve years ending in 2005 with the murder rate at its lowest then level since 1963 with 539 murders that year, for a murder rate of 6.58 per 100,000 people, compared to 2,245 murders in 1990. In 2009, the low would be displaced. Among the 182 U.S. cities with populations of more than 100,000, New York City ranked 136th in overall crime.[13]”

Here’s a stat for you Publius – Kennesaw, Georgia. The following is from a 2007 World Net Daily article:

In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of “Wild West” showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker, or defender.

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

By comparison, the population of Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, has actually dropped slightly and stands at 22,202, according to 2005 statistics. More significantly, perhaps, the city’s crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent. Today, by comparison, the township’s crime rate stands at 2,268 per 100,000.

Well, let’s do the math. 8,000,000 is roughly 28,000 times 30. So, we take the total number of gun fatalities in Kennesaw and multiply that by 30 and… oh, it’s still zero.

Sure, perhaps zero IS a bit unrealistic for NYC, but I have no doubt that gun fatalities would decrease drastically in NYC if the criminals were convinced that their intended victims were armed and prepared to shoot back. It’s not just common sense, Kennesaw as a case study proves it to be fact, whereas mass shootings in “gun-free zones” like Va. Tech, the movie theatre in Aurora, and the army base at Ft. Hood prove that “gun-free zone“ actually translates to ”target-rich environment.”

So many of these shootings remind me of the shootings we had in the days of Al Capone and prohibition.

We know have the same thing because of drugs.

The only way we are ever going to reduce the extensive crime surrounding drugs is to treat it like alcohol.

We have to stop spending all of this time and money and turning otherwise harmless people into criminals because of a mistake they make to use drugs.

We have to let them die or make treatment available to those who seek it.

We have to stop creating a sense of fear and making others into a criminals for helping someone on drugs, but could be caught with drugs because the drug addict brings them around or leaves them.

There are too many problems with drugs for any government to resolve short of a police state and tyranny; which will only lead to civil war. You’re seeing the makings of one or the others. I’ve watched it evolve for 40+ years and Bill O’riely is dead wrong on this issue

When those sprout up, it becomes Hammer Time and all pretenses of rule of law and civility and small government and individual responsibility dry up and blow away. The ‘war on drugs’ accounts for almost ALL of the violence on our southern border. Hispanic gangsters aren’t killing to smuggle people; they’re killing to smuggle drugs. If you’re from TX, you should know this. Much of our domestic violent crime in the U.S. is related to a combination of mental illness and/or substance use (including the manufacture and distribution of both illicit and ‘legal’ drugs). There is no great logic leap to assume that drugs may have been involved. ANY statement on this event is speculation at this point, but the law of probability is on Blazingaway’s side.
The ‘war on drugs’ sucks both your money and rights. It as an authroritarian denial of irrepressible human behavior. The stark reality is you can’t save everyone from themselves and some people will ALWAYS choose escapism over industriouness. Provide education, save those who wanna change and indulge those who wanna destroy themselves. But facing reality is sometimes too ugly for the faint of heart and the busybodies, yes? “The children! The children!! The children!!!”
And lets not forget the money and power the ‘war on drugs’ allows the state and complicit cronies.
You wanna know why there is a drive for a ‘war on food’? It’s a natural progression with the busybodies and authoritarians who will save you from yourself… whether you like it not.
Having worked with junkies in my career, I know most don’t wanna be saved, only left alone.

No, Publius. What’s crazy is that, given the alarming regularity with which these mass shootings have started to occur, you won’t even consider the possibility.

Publiuspenileman,I think I would choose another name….Now to the point,I think Obama is responsible for this poor mans death and for the death of an innocent person,This poor man was Laid Off last year and couldn’t get his job back, must not have been a UNION job,and he must have just missed the cut when Obama created or saved 3 hundred million jobs since taking office…..wait a minute,I heard that there is an election coming up so it might be 4 hundred million jobs.Oh well,no matter,if he hadn’t lost his job due to the mishandling of the economy this would have never happened. So……it must be Obamas fault, just like it was Romneys fault that woman died of cancer.

How can there be any shootings in NYC since guns are banned? Can’t the perpatrators in NYC read? Oh wait, maybe it is because they don’t care what the ban says. Hmmm could it be that criminals are criminals because they ignore the law? Nahhh, nevermind couldn’t possible be that……..

Correct, if it becomes a Leftist, they’ll suddenly get soft and care worn and coo on about him having mental issues and how society is to blame and politics will disappear from the radar. As always.

One doesn’t have to believe in conspiracies to note that they are becoming more prevalent, after years of dormancy, and are being reported in breathless hype by the Leftist media. They live for this crap, their agenda knows no limits, no morality, and no bounds.

      @ghost:

True. It could easily be a series of coincidences or copycats as well. I can never be sure anymore, and still recall the warnings of chaos being used to get people to cry out for the madness to stop. Then comes ‘never waste a good emergency’ Democratic Socialists to further clamp us into irons.

It is breaking news. By using the word “multiple” they avoid having to change the headline every time another victim is added. Though I completely understand and share your cynicism concerning sensationalism in media, I think this time it may be just practicality.
