Muslim American Claims He Was Beaten & Tortured In UAE at FBI’s Request

STOCKHOLM (The Blaze/AP) — A Muslim American seeking asylum in Sweden claimed Wednesday he was detained at the U.S. government’s request while in the United Arab Emirates last summer, tortured in custody and interrogated about the activities of a Portland mosque.

Yonas Fikre told a news conference Wednesday that he was held for 106 days and was beaten, threatened with death and kept in solitary confinement in a frigid cell.

The 33-year-old, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Eritrea, says he had attended the same mosque in Portland as a man who has been charged in a plot to detonate a bomb in the northwestern U.S. city. He moved to Sudan in 2009 and later to the United Arab Emirates. He went to Sweden, where he has relatives, after being released from detention on Sept. 15.

Fikre, who converted to Islam in 2003, is the third Muslim man from Portland to publicly say he was detained while traveling abroad and questioned about Portland’s Masjid-as-Sabr mosque. Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a Somali American who is awaiting trial on a charge of plotting to set off a bomb in downtown Portland in November 2010, occasionally worshipped there. A decade ago, seven Muslims with ties to the mosque were arrested following a failed effort to enter Afghanistan and fight U.S. forces.

NPR has more from Fikre’s attorney about the alleged violations of civil liberty:

Oregon attorney Tom Nelson is representing all three. He says the thread running through their is deeply disturbing.

Nelson explained, “The media should know how America is treating its immigrant Muslim citizens. It‘s saying you can’t go home unless you surrender your constitutional rights.”

Fikre says he met Mohamud a handful of times, but wouldn’t call him a friend or even an acquaintance.

Fikre says he was arrested on June 1 in the United Arab Emirates and taken to a prison in Abu Dhabi, where he was questioned about the activities of the Portland mosque and its imam, Mohamed Sheikh Abdirahman Kariye.

When he first suggested that his UAE interrogators were working for the FBI, they became very upset, he said.

“They got very angry and they said: We don’t work with the Americans, we are an independent country,” he said. However, in the final days of his confinement, Fikre said that one interrogator acknowledged that the FBI had been involved in his questioning.

“He confirmed to me that the FBI was there. Also when I was getting beaten, they did admit that the FBI knew exactly what was happening and they were working with the FBI,” Frike said.

Beth Anne Steele, a spokeswoman for the FBI office in Portland, said she could not discuss specifics of the case.

“I can tell you that the FBI trains its agents very specifically and very thoroughly about what is acceptable under U.S. law,” she said. “To do anything counter to that training is counterproductive – we risk legal liability and potentially losing a criminal case in court.”

An aide to Oregon congressman Earl Blumenauer told the AP that last June, Blumenauer‘s office had been contacted by Fikre’s wife and lawyer after he vanished. The aide, Willie Smith, said State Department officials then confirmed to the congressman’s office that Fikre was being held in the United Arab Emirates.

According to Smith, U.S. government officials told Fikre’s wife that he “was fine and that he wasn’t being mistreated.”

    if we accept this is “O.K” we become the ones we hate.I will not jump on the torture is cool as long as it isnt me band wagon.I dont like Islam.I think the “religion” is nothing more then a brainwashing war cult, but torture ruins the fabric of society.We can not accept this.We must tell the potus he is who he hates if he keeps rendition.Notice the color of this guys skin?       I completely agree. IF there was evidence that this guy was up to no good, extradite him to the US and put him on trial. We don‘t let US citizens be tortured by foreign countries with our government’s blessings! What the heck is wrong with the people here lamenting that he didn’t die while being tortured? “We love America! Unless you’re a Muslim. Then you’re better off dying from torture”… is that the message we want to convey? Christ Almighty, we might as well be Iran.

Obama signed an executive order prohibiting “enhanced interrogation techniques” being used on terrorists here, while preserving Rendition on a long weekend while the New York Times was asleep so that the lefties couldn’t be disappointed with him. We know these techniques work. It was KSM’s interrogation that led to the courier who led us to Bin Laden. So if this guy was “up to no good” extraditing him to the U.S. precludes us from interrogating him with all means available to us. Did you forget that part? And I’m not writing off the possibility that he may be dirty still. A recent Muslim convert travelling to the Sudan and the UAE then to Sweden who attended a mosque with known perp…no red flags champ?

      Wait… your argument is “We shouldn’t follow the laws of the United States?”

      No, I didn’t forget that at all. Funny that you’re all for throwing out laws, due process, or the Constitution when it comes to American citizens being tortured. Oh wait! Muslim American citizens. I forgot that part, didn’t I?

      “We send him to trial” for what LOCKED? What was Fikre formally charged with to be sent to trial for Perry Mason? And how do you interrogate him then? Without catching him with his underpants in his hands like his buddy Mutalab we can’t prosecute him tiger…did you forget that? All we have is his suspcious activity and within the context of today‘s terrorist tactics it’s enough to detain him and seek some answers and guess what? Congress has approved it Democrats and Republicans. If you don‘t like it then do what we’ve done about Obamacare..get it to the supreme court to judge it champ. Fikre is a suspected terrorist not a burglar or a car jacker and quite honestly, I‘m still not convinced he isn’t a threat.       So, you say the head of the CIA, the Secretary of Defense, and a senator (who was the GOP candidate last election) are all wrong, but another senator and unnamed officials are right? Well, there’s definitely an interesting take. I like to take the actual story from the CIA:

      “Mohammed did not reveal the names while being subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, former officials said. He identified them many months later under standard interrogation, they said, leaving it once again up for debate as to whether the harsh technique was a valuable tool or an unnecessarily violent tactic.”

      King lied when he said waterboarding led to the names. The guy was waterboarded… and gave up no relevant information until months . Also note that Rumsfeld was specifically talking about catching bin Laden, not in general. Nice try, champ, but you might want to check your sources next time! :-)

Just like you accuse King of lying..I’m accusing PANETTA of lying to McCain (who already is opposed to waterboarding) and I‘ve got Panetta’s reputation and record to back me. What have you got on King to demonstrate he’s willing to lie for his party and his boss champ?       and LOCKED..please be specifc..if you won’t disclose your source for the quotes (ie: where are the quotes from?) at least specify which secretary of defense you’re quoting. Is it Gates or Panetta? We’ve already established that Panetta as a party hack would not be truthful about the success of waterboarding.
      And no..it doesn’t work like that champ..you don’t get to go “hey one senator scratches the other” (how pathetic). I have a record of Panetta as a party hack backing me up. Show me credible reason to not believe King.

      Generally I agree. The people commenting on this article make me wonder if they’re actually liberals, as almost no one is speaking in horror that a US CITIZEN was reportedly tortured under orders from our government by a foreign country. Instead they lament he didn’t die.

      This is the height of support for Big Brother, and the antithesis of small-government, conservative principles. These posters should be ashamed of themselves for not supporting a citizen’s rights for a fair trial, not matter what his accused crimes may be.

      first off I understand your concern but I don’t believe him at all…generally people don’t give you much info when they are holding you captive and torturing you and second off, he is not a US citizen but a Muslim immigrant who attends an inflamatory mosque that regularly has jihadi issues including being friends with a guy who was hellbent on blowing up a treelighting ceremony my God daughter was attending. the darn mosque needs to be shut down. any muslim flying UAE attending this mosque or others with jihad issues needs to have their passport yanked or stay over seas. we really need to stop importing terrorists under the false PC assumptions they will be fine over here and assimilate.

    What amazes me, is that the stories we hear and read have some common faceets and beg the same questions to be ansered.

      1) Right on Obama. That was a bad election year. Neither Obama or Mccain were particularly appealing candidates. Its unfortunate that Obama turned out to just be another crazy neo-con.

    I find it amusing that Christians – the religion obsessed with persecution and thinks the government is out to suppress their mythology… finds no problem with the same government kidnapping American citizens abroad to be tortured.

    So if you believe the Federal Government is a vast atheist and jewish conspiracy against christians… do you really think its a good idea to give them the right to torture you?

      The Roman Emperor Constantine… founded the Roman Temple of Christianity… and the first Bishop of Rome had a Body Guard of Gladiators… and many Pagans were killed. In the West, this became Catholic, Roman, Christianity… which created Orders of Knights to kill Muslims in the Holy Land.       I find it amusing that people think that Christianity is a religion obsessed with persecution. I am a Christian and against torture, and the NDAA. Ron Paul also a Christain is agaisnt these things, along with his son, also a Christian. Basically what I am saying is there are Christians out there who are against what you say they’re not. You don’t know what you are talking about. “Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

      The Roman Army of Constantine was Christian… just as the Army of the American Revolution… both sides of the Civil War… WWi… WWII… etc. Persecution is not a Northern European thing to be accepted!
