Egypt Muslim Brotherhood Holds First Open Internal Vote

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s largest political group, the Muslim Brotherhood, held its first open internal election Saturday since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, in an attempt to burnish its democratic credentials ahead of parliamentary polls later this year.

After decades spent underground because of an official ban, the public vote is also part of a concerted push by the Islamist group to show off its organization and dispel its reputation as a secretive and closed group. It looks poised to win big at the November polls, largely because of its well-organized political machine and social outreach programs.

Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie hailed Saturday’s vote, which chose three new members to the group’s executive board, saying “the open and transparent elections show the world that the Brotherhood works in the open, to restore Egypt’s freedom and standing.”

Speaking to the gathering at a luxury hotel in the Cairo neighborhood of Nasser City, he said the vote was one of the “fruits” of the Egypt’s uprising.

Saturday’s vote marked a clear shift from the past, when the the Brotherhood was banned from public politics and its members and finances were targets of a constant security crackdown.

The Brotherhood went to great lengths to showcase their internal democratic practices, inviting cameras and journalists to the Saturday‘s event where more than 100 members of the group’s policy making body cast ballots in tranparent boxes.

“This is a sign that the group respects democracy,” spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan said. “Egypt has undoubtedly changed a lot.”

The members elected three people to the 17-member executive body to replace people who joined the leadership of the Brotherhood’s newly launched political party, the Freedom and Justice Party, he said.

According to Ghozlan, the group‘s policymaking body hadn’t been able to convene in full since 1995 in fear of mass arrests.

The group registered the Freedom and Justic Party in June, and has said it will contest half of the seats in parliament. Many of Egypt’s liberal and leftist parties fear the Brotherhood may dominate the new parliament – responsible for organizing the writing of the country’s new constitution – and enforce a religious tone on the document.

Dia Rashwan, an expert of Islamic movements, said the open vote was a way for the Brotherhood to reaffirm its legitimacy to the public, particularly since it hardly functioned through legitimate channels. Because of the ban, the group’s legal status remains unclear, and its finances not scrutinized.

Formed in 1928, the Brotherhood was banned in 1954 after it was accused of using violent tactics against opponents. The group had later renounced violence, but remained officially banned.

Despite the stiff measures against the group, it was able to field candidates in parliamentary elections as independents and proved to be the most organized political force during Mubarak’s 30-year rule. In 2005, it won 20 percent of the seats amid widespread rigging in favor of Mubarak’s ruling party.

      The issue is that the Muslim Brotherhood is in fact and deed, the antithesis of freedom and liberty. This is similar to Obama and his sycophants now blaming the credit downgrade on the Tea Party when the fact is the Tea Party plan was and is the only thing that would have preserved the AAA rating (balanced budget and cutting spending). When a person or group claims the opposite of truth to be the truth, WATCH OUT and WAKE UP and start thinking for yourself. Common sense will hopefully lead you to the truth.

      The Muslim Brotherhood has one primary objective: Force Sharia law upon the entire world.
      This is the agenda Islam desires. How can I “stereotype” an entire religion as liars(at least liars to Jews, Christians and any other non-Muslim), women abusers, murderers, thieves and genocidal?
      Because if they do not believe these atrocities as “showing allah their god obedience” and thus are to be either ostracized or killed. The Koran calls for muslims to do whatever it takes to promote Sharia law.
      One of the very first actions taken by the Egyptian “freedom loving democrats” did was burn all Coptic Christian churches. They also sexually assaulted a woman in the square while other freedom lovers watched, cheering.( She was a reporter and Western, so “fair game” to muslims.
      The Muslim Brotherhood is nothing but a terrorist organization caught in the public eye. Oh, by the way, Obama admin. just gave the Libyan freedom Muslim Brotherhood hundreds of millions of OUR tax dollars.       Actually, the fear of the muslim brotherhood is based upon rumor mongering of the elites who are upset that they are losing power and dominion over the world. Glenn also hated Ron Paul for the longest time, until it was no longer possible to resist. A free and democratic Egypt is exactly what every American should want. What they do with their freedom is their business up to and until they come to our shores. If they want sharia law, let them have it. Much much better to let them have it over there than to give it to them over here!

      Well, you say Glenn is nothing special. He is just a man like all other men. He IS different in that he did predict most of what has happened in the last few years. Anyone with their eyes open could have done this, as you stated. But how many did in the news media? CNBC, CNN, ABC? No, not one of them. So say what you like, but it takes someone with courage to tell the truth. And most of the news media and the administration have no courage. Start praying today, because starting tomorrow, you will need all the courage you can muster. That is my prediction.

      Besides I have to wonder if you think a popylation has a right to create there own Societu through ‘democracy’ why you have such a problem with tea partiers, libertarians, and republicans doing the same thing!

      Tell me one thing that Glenn Beck has predicted that wasn’t common sense? Anyone could have predicted our current socio/economic problems in 2008. Where was Glenn’s great predicting abilities back in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007? You know, back when he supported the patriot act, the bailouts, the stimulus package, and was calling Ron Paul supporters terrorists.

      Glenn Beck is no more a prophet than any of us. we just read or pay attention to experts and historians out there.

      Its called common sense, Behindblueeyes. Being able to learn from history doesn’t hurt either. There is always blowback from our military intervention. ALWAYS. The “Arab spring” is the latest blowback. When president Bush pushed for free and fair elections in Gaza, an area that didn’t want or need free and fair elections, the end result was the free and fair election of Hamas to power, which, inturn, made the middle east far less stable. The same thing is happening now. President Obama is taking sides with people who do not want freedom or democracy. The end result will not be good. You don’t have to have magic powers to see this coming.
      Just pay attention. If you don’t want to do the leg work, just do what Glenn Beck does and wait for Andrew Napolitano or Ron Paul to take a stand on an issue and then jump on their bandwagon.

      For me personally it’s just a matter of being interested in reading history, especially early 20th century and cold war history. Seeing the parallels today! Also by reading and paying attention to what people are saying you begin to notice discrepancies in people’s words. Obama and many politicians lie through their teeth, if you stay informed some of the BS can be seen!

      I actually don’t trust everything Glenn says either, he may even be wrong about some of it. For example on one episode of his old tv show he said NWO may be good or bad! I totally disagree. But quite a bit of his material can be backed up by third party sources.

      How does it all end? I have no idea. I do know that if we continue to expand our welfare and warfare state, we will go broke. You don’t have to be Glenn Beck to see that one coming. It wont be soon and it will NOT happen under president Obama, though he has contributed greatly to our debt. It will take years. Just follow the economic models of once great empires who are either no longer great or are just plain no longer. We are on that path, sadly. The future of America depends on if we become a more libertarian society or a more liberal society. If we become a more liberal society once the dollar crashes, America, as we know it, will be over. i.e. police state; total loss of personal liberties and freedoms. If we have become a more libertarian society by that time, America will survive. One thing that Glenn Beck is correct about is that everyone should learn how to grow their own food and learn how to can their food.
      As far as the trojan horse or evil, i have no idea what you mean. President Obama isn’t evil. That’s just plain stupid. Obama is an arrogrant huckster that subscribes to keynesian economics with heavy doses of black liberation theology and social justice. That doesn’t make him evil. What it does make him is bad for America, which is what he is.
      I hate to break it to you, but America will survive Obama.

      I read the Corsi book titled “The Obama Nation”. I read it before the 2008 elections and did not vote for Obama because of Obama’s communist past, muslim influences and his dealings with crooks in Chicago. At the time I assumed the public would be made aware of his past and he would never get elected. The book told me all I needed to know about this evil person (yes he is evil). He is a Trojan horse because he duped so many Americans with catchy phases ,he had the press in his pocket, and Soros money for the support structure and master plan. The Soros stuff I learned from Beck.
      He has infested our government with like minded individuals intent on collapsing our economy and causing chaos. That ,to me, is pure evil.
