Muslim Doctor Faces Blasphemy Charge for Putting Business Card in Trash Can

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Police say a Pakistani doctor has been arrested on suspicion of blasphemy after he threw away a business card of a man who shared the name of Islam’s prophet, Muhammad.

It is the latest case involving the country’s contentious law on blasphemy against Islam.

Police official Mushtaq Shah says the Muslim doctor was detained Friday in the southern city of Hyderabad after a complaint was lodged alleging his actions had insulted the Prophet Muhammad.

Pakistan’s blasphemy law has received widespread attention following the case of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death last month for insulting Islam. Critics say the law is often misused to settle grudges, persecute minorities and fan religious extremism.

Naushad Valiyani was detained on Friday following a complaint by a medical representative who visited the doctor in the city of Hyderabad.

“The arrest was made after the complainant told the police that Valiyani threw his business card, which had his full name, Muhammad Faizan, in a dustbin during a visit to his clinic,” regional police chief Mushtaq Shah told AFP.

“Faizan accused Valiyani of committing blasphemy and asked police to register a case against the doctor.”

Shah said the issue had been resolved after Valiyani, a member of Pakistan’s Ismaili community, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, apologised but local religious leaders intervened and pressed for action.

“Valiyani had assured Faizan that he did not mean to insult the Prophet Mohammed by throwing the visiting card in the dustbin,” Shah said, adding that the police had registered a case under the Blasphemy Act.

    While I think what happened in the story is way way way out there and I can’t imagine any sane person thinking this is right in anyway. I don’t appreciate a number of comments I read to this story. I am not sure stuff like this is really good because it seems to set us against the muslims more and more and they against us more and more. I do not agree with the muslims at all, and believe it is a false religion, but please lets not be like them in their hatred and demeaning attitutes. Yes standing up for what is right is one thing and expressing that is great, but some of the comments I will say are full of hate. I am against 100% them bringing and imposing their law anywhere on American soil, That must be stopped now! But not with hate and especially not with violence. Violence is where hatred gos everytime. Think about it!

      I have to agree with you. Though most posters are probably just venting their spleens, each ugly comment seems to build on the next. We can be appalled at their culture, beliefs and behavior without resorting to hate and violence. I think we should fight them tooth and nail everytime they inch closer to sharia law in this country. But lets discuss the issues and try to come up with real, viable solutions. Somehow “killing them all” doesn’t seem like a workable idea at the moment.

    I know this wasn’t here, but yet we let these people inside our country with no compunction whatsoever. Islam is so incompatible with Western life yet they’re welcome with open arms by our ignorant PC infected politicians and liberal loons.

    Suicide anyone? NUTS. Time to close our borders to everyone. WE have enough people here, especially Wacky dangerous Allah worshipers. They don‘t come here and lose these ’ideals’ all of a sudden, they just hide them and hide behind liberals and our government plotting the overthrow of the country.

    If these loons could think past today they could see this. Muslims are patient people and they populate and wait for their moment which is coming soon.

    On this basis, I don‘t see why it’s not ALREADY considered a blasphemy for lowly, sinful humans to be named after the almighty, perfect Muhammad. I mean, really. The ultimate blasphemy!

    Just serves to point out more of the idiocy pervading the world and especially the Muslim world today. First, if the name Mohammad is so sacred then why do they allow its widespread use in any form, especially as a common name? If it is so sacred to Islam then it should only be used in religious functions to refer to the Muslim prophet, Mohammad. Imagine if the use of the name God, or Yahweh or Jesus were used commonly, would we (Christians) think that was ok or would we think it was presumptive or self-gratification by the user or his/her parents? If the name Mohammad is going to be used as a common place Arabic/Middle Eastern name then it has become just a common name and should be treated like any common word or name, no special treatment. What idiots they are!!!!!!

      Here’s some food for thought….. there seems to be a trend in the US to name baby girls male names. (Jamie, Aubry etc) What if muslims start naming girls Mohammad? Would that protect her from their barbaric laws?

      This is nuts. Would a gay muslim named MoHAMmad (Pigs be in his name) be sentenced to death for the insult to Islam for being gay and named MoHAMmad (Pigs be in his name) or simply for being gay? I guess this also means that muslims can no longer thow out their old phone books since that Pigs name is the most common name in the world.       And of course, every time they blow up a mosque, they’ve ALWAYS sent someone through to gather up all the copies of the Koran that might be there. And they frisk the people in the market places for Korans before they blow up the shopping centers. All people who are named Muhammed are also now sacred, as are their business cards, name tags and any other items associated with them.

He tosses the card and the guy sees him do it. This guy understands that vengence is HIS to bring upon this man for spiting him. Wonder if he named himself Mohammed???       Meanwhile, Jesus can be portrayed in disgusting ways because it is a form of “art”. Our world is changing before our eyes and there is nothing we can do about it. It’s biblical, but very hard to witness.

      I’m no bible thumper, nor do I go to church. I think the last time I was in a church was at my Grandfather’s funeral. But, when I think about the complexity of life at the molecular level, I can’t help but wonder how it came to be. I mean, when you think of DNA, how can you explain the fact that every cell in your body has the same DNA but each tissue makes different proteins and lives a different length of time. How is it that a the correct chemicals just so happened to arrange themselves in a self replicating fashion that lead ultimately to the formation of sentient beings like ourselves. Its pretty amazing, and while I don’t agree fully with any religious groups out there, I can‘t for a second come to the conclusion that there isn’t something at work in the world.
