Muslim High School Girl Barred from Marching in ROTC Parade Because of Head Scarf

Muslim Girl Barred from Parade for Head Scarf

A Tennessee high school freshman wasn‘t allowed to march in her school’s homecoming parade last month because of her Muslim head scarf and is now trying to change U.S. Army policy as a result.

Demin Zawity, a Junior ROTC member at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn., contacted the Council on American-Islamic Relations after she was barred from participating in the homecoming parade because her head scarf wasn’t allowed.

Under U.S. Army policy, full head coverings are prohibited during official uniformed ceremonies.

Zawity said she quit the program, an elective, after her commanding officer told her she would have to remove her head scarf if she wanted to march in the parade.

“I was like, you’ve got to be kidding me. I wanted to just break down crying right there,” Zawity told Nashville’s WTVF-TV. “They‘re telling me I’m not allowed to march in the parade just because of a piece of cloth wrapped around my head. And to me it‘s not like it’s just a piece of cloth, to me, it’s like my symbol.”

Zawity asked if an exception could be made for religious circumstances, and her commanding officer said he would see what he could do, according to Fox News. But both school officials and district lawyers ultimately decided if she was going to participate, she would have to be dressed like every other member, in accordance with U.S. Army policy.

“We as a school system are bound to the regulations of the Army. We cannot conduct the program unless we follow the regulations,” said Jason Golden, chief operating officer and general counsel for the school district.

CAIR is calling on both the school district and Department of Defense to reverse a policy that it says “effectively bars a Muslim student from participating in the class.”

“It’s an unwise policy,” CAIR attorney Gadeir Abbas told Fox News. “It’s acceptable for a Jewish student to wear his yarmulke under his uniform hat. The regulations already reflect that there are religious obligations among members.”

Lt. Col. Matthew Hackathorn, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Cadet Command, said the cases are different because a yarmulke can be covered by military headgear, whereas head scarves cannot.

Perishan Hussein, the teenager’s mother, said her daughter felt as though the school district was “dismissive” of her beliefs, and said her head scarf should not have been a surprise to anyone since she wears it every day.

“It’s the American process,” Hussein said of getting CAIR involved to petition the government. “We make rules, regulations, laws, and later on down the line we find out they may not work, so we make amendments to change those laws.”

Both the family and CAIR said they do not plan to sue over the policy unless they deem it necessary. In addition to a policy change, they want an apology from the school district and for Zawity to be allowed to participate in the program again.

Hackathorn said the commanding officer at the school acted in accordance with policy and defended the uniform requirements, saying they instill “personal responsibility, attention to detail and being part of a team.”

“We’re not discriminatory. She’s invited to come back anytime, but it has to be in accordance with the regulations,” he said.

Besides, I bet the guys that wear the white hoods could get away with saying its just a piece of cloth and why do people get upset.

That’s why they call it a UNIFORM. If you sign up for Army JrROTC, you agree to follow ALL the regulations established by the Army for that program, including those specified for wearing of uniforms. The U. S. Armed Forces establish rules and regulations designed to foster and maintain good order and discipline, because, ultimately, lives depend upon everyone in uniform rendering obedience to orders. If a person cannot comply with the regulations, they need to separate themselves from the program, which is what this young lady apparently did. Semper Fi.

We keep doing what you are expressing, and all we’ll be doing is making it easier for the fascist/socialist/theocratic Muslims to recruit these impressionable kids. If we show that our constitution is for the freedom of the individual to practice the faith of their choice, it takes away a major recruitment tactic from the totalitarianists.

WHY would they even let this person into ROTC, when Muslims have already proven they cannot be trusted in the military, any more than they can be trusted anywhere else, since they are only interested in doing Jihad on Americans and killing as many of us as they can. Examples: rolling a grenade into a tent of sleeping soldiers in Iraq. That was a Muslim who was let into our military. Ft. Hood shooter. THAT was a Muslim who was let into our military. And yeah, I know that is politically incorrect, but “by their fruits ye shall know them”, or in her case, by her HEADSCARF you shall know her. On second thought, by all means let her leave it on–since she is likely neither a loyal American NOR a fit candidate for military service, and it makes her easier to identify as a member of the “religion of peace” so she can’t sneak up on anybody when she decides to “go jihad”.

They are not prohibiting her from practicing her religion. She can do that without a covering. I knew of a couple Jewish people when I was in the military, and when in uniform they couldn’t wear the little cap (what’s it called, a yamica?). You HAVE to abide by the uniform regulations. What if I decided I was a frisbetarian and wanted to wear a frisbee on my head? (By the way, frisbetarians believe when you die, your soul goes up on top of the house and won’t come down….it’s a joke). A head covering like Muslim women wear, in combat has GOT to be a safety hazard.

No is saying she can’t be Islamic and serve, So to draw that comparison is hyperbolic and shear baseless rhetoric. What they are saying is if she choses to be in the ROTC there are dress codes. In the military no one gets special treatment or special attire. When she‘s off duty shehas the freedom to wear whatever she choses but when she’s on duty she as a uniformed dress code.
If she doesn‘t like then quit now because when she reached the real military if that is her goal she’ll follow the code or go to prison and then get dishonorably discharged.

Or shoud the Amish sects begin to wear the ‘midrif’ t-shirts that other teen agers wear? Does a heart shape have nothing to do with love – or a clenched fist have nothing to do with hate?? Does ONLY a bible symbolize true religion? I think not. After all, there are various folks here in this country who claim to be the TRUE Christians but use hate in all their teachings. If she wants to participate in the organization she needs to accept and abide by the rules. A religious stance is not accepted in many instances to overturn or amend rules and regulations. For example many courts have ruled that parents cannot withhold necessary medical treatment from a child based on religious beliefs. This is not how you assimilate into a culture and society.

I believe BBOATMANABLE summarized it perfectly. When you choose to join the military, you give up many of the rights and privileges that American citizens enjoy. Your actions are covered by a different set of laws called the Uniform Code of Military Justice. You relinquish your privacy and have adopt a new set of grooming, clothing and behavior standards. The military requires a person to give up some of themselves for the greater good of the unit. Uniformity provides commonality, hygiene and most importantly safety. If everyting has a place, you can find it at zero dark 30 when the sappers are in the wire.

As a personal note, I hated the gas training course. Everyone who goes through it knows what a bad seal feels like. Imagine trying to get a gas mask on with a head scarf.

The only grooming exception I know of is black soldiers who suffer from a skin aliment brought about from shaving, upon medical verification, can grow a well-groomed beard. Understand this knowledge is 40 years old and may no longer be accurate.

Finally, if you don’t want to follow the rules, don’t join. I don’t want to give US combat training to a muslim anyway.

The word UNIFORM for proper military dress means exactly that, all are DRESSED uniformally. If a person voluntarially becomes a member of ANY USA military organization certain rules and regulations do apply. What a crybaby !

Some Tennessee young men would probably wear Davy Crockett style coonskin caps if they could, so is there somewhere they could write are call to present their case to change military regulations?
Catering to Muslim likes and dislikes has reached it’s limit. I’m sure the girl could wear her scarf if she enlisted in Hezbollah or the Iranian Guard. Maybe she should move to Iran or Syria.

Sigh: they can’t separate their religion from their every day life. Obama has emboldened them to this and they see the Riots as an opportunity to do what has been done in other nations.

If they can’t abide by our separation laws and rules, then they will war with us. And obviously they can’t, it’s now a spark that can turn into a fire.

The commies, socialist, hippies, tree huggers etc along now with the Muslims have fused into what? Chaos in the streets, riots and a take over…they do not have a snowballs chance in hell to take over this Nation.

All this started in 1988 when Jessy Jackson lost and some sociology professor who apparently did not take an “ethics” (thou shalt not push a society into a theoretical mess-data tells us it does not work-and there is no data to indicate that it will work) class came up with a third party tactic called fusion…it is still an ongoing process that is apparently working.

Noone gets to wear their symbol in the military, any military. If they would allow her to wear her head scarf, they would need to allow Christians to wear crosses where they could be seen. The object in the military is to have everyone look alike so they will know that they are part of the team. The team needs to be more important than her headscarf. Not more important than her religion, but more important than her religion’s symbols. Mormans can wear their undergarments because they are covered. Yarmulke can be worn because they can be covered by headgear. If she can stuff her scarf under her hat she can wear it otherwise take it off or don’t be in ROTC.

Are you SERIOUS? We do not allow Scotts to wear kilts, unless it is a bagpiper at a funeral. When was the last time you saw a trooper, or a Marine, marching wearing a kilt. Name me ANY instance you saw a US soilder wearing a kilt that was not a bagpiper at a funeral.

As for priests and pastors… as most chaplins are wearing bdu’s, they are also wearing faith based insignia, not collars.

What do the courts say?Must be consistent. If the military welcomes all religions then it must welcome their head coverings. Is kosher or hallal food served in the military?”

Your complete and utter ignorance is astounding. First, No one is prohibiting her from practicing her religion. The military is about conforming. All dress alike. A soldier in Korea is wearing the same uniform as a soldier in Germany, Italy, or the US. Being in the military removes most of your freedoms. For instance, you no longer have the freedom of speech or assembly. You do not even have the freedom of your own personal body. If the military says youre getting a shot, trust me, your getting the shot. You give up your rights to personal freedoms when you MAKE THE CHOICE to join. Your reference to wearing a Sikh turbin, Yakima, or rastafarian beanie is ridiculous. A Yamika can be covered by covers and caps. No skh is allowed to wear a turbin and no rastafarian (now we have a whole new outlook as to were you are coming from) is allowed to wear reggae beanies, just like they cant smoke dope (considered a spiritual act). You are no longer an individual but part of a uniformed collective. Something you should be accustomed to.

Finally, the uniformity, is discipline. If she cant show uniformity, she cant show discipline. And Cair can kiss my butt

For those of you who believe there are good muslims… There are two types of muslims.
      1. Extremest muslim. One who faithfully practices the teachings of the koran.
      2. Moderate muslim. One who watches the faithful, practice the teachings of the koran.

Here are a few tasty quotes:
Sura 2:187 “And kill them wherever ye shall find them”
“Kill the disbelievers wherever we find them.” (Sura 2:191)
“The infidels are your sworn enemies.” (Sura 4:101)
Sura 4:89 “seize them and slay them wherever you find them.”
“The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger…will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land.” (Sura 5:33)
“Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends.” (Sura 5:51)
“Infidels are those who declare: ‘God is the Christ, the son of Mary.’” (Sura 5:17)
“Infidels are those that say ‘God is one of three in a Trinity.’” (Sura 5:73)
Sura 9:005: So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush”
“Make war on the infidels who dwell around you.” (Sura 9:123)

“When you meet the infidel in the battlefield, strike off their heads.” (Sura 47:4)
“Mohammed is Allah’s apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the infidels.” (Sura 48:29)

Read the rules before you sign on the dotted line. The military is not a place where your personal preferences are worth crap! You screw up and the whole group pays for your mistakes; Fuzz on your locker socks and your whole unit gets an extra hour of PT. Uniformity, conformation, out of many… one. It is not a game. .If it rubs you the wrong way, don’t volunteer.

Someone needs to tell this girl that when you‘re in the military it’s not all about the individual. When you‘re in the military you’re part of a team. That’s why everyone has to wear a uniform and the only thing that differentiates you from others would be the insignia on your collar or shoulder that signifies rank.

If her hijab is more important to her than being part of a team in the military, then I guess the military isnt for her. Good that she finds out about that while still in the ROTC and not during or after she finishes basic training.

The head covering ( hijab ) is not even commanded by the Qur’an. The term hijab or veil is not used in the Qur’an to refer to an article of clothing for women or men, rather it refers to a spatial curtain that divides or provides privacy. The Qur’an instructs the male believers (Muslims) to talk to wives of Prophet Muhammad behind a hijab. This hijab was the responsibility of the men and not the wives of Prophet Muhammad. However, in later Muslim societies this instruction, specific to the wives of Prophet Muhammad, was generalized, leading to the segregation of the Muslim men and women.

In a parade the word uniform means just that and the scarf would not work. The same would go for any deviation. Even chaplains cannot wear clerical collars in certain situations. She had the choice to wear the uniform or not participate in the parade. That was more choice than she would have had when I wore the uniform.

Pape’s research, funded by the Defense Department, shows that suicide bombings in Afghanistan went up one third after the Obama administration surged 30,000 troops into the country.

Personally, I am REAL uneasy with it. There have already been cases where we lived to regret letting these cockroaches into our military. Grenade boy killing his comrades by rolling a grenade into a tent of his own fellow soldiers in Iraq, and the Fort Hood shooter. We are at WAR with these people, literally and figuratively, and even if we were not, they are CERTAINLY at war with us!

This is way different than Japanese-Americans and German-Americans in WWII. They did not deserve the treatment they got, as they were as loyal as any other American. But these cockroaches are NOT loyal Americans. They are only loyal to their bloodsoaked perversion of a religion. They come into our country and use the very rights and freedoms they would deny others to try to destroy us and take over our country. I do not see that we are obligated to go along with their ideas OR tolerate their filthy religion, which is only a 7th Century Theocratic form of government with delusions of grandeur that wants to take over the world.

As a retired military member, there are reasons for everything. Uniformity and teamwork are hallmakrs and necessary requirements. Just as headscarves would be inappropriate in a fox hole, they are also inappropriate the rest of the time. Soldiers never know when they’ll be thrown into a combat situation and will need to be ready in all aspects. The soldiers and sailors at Pearl Harbor didn‘t have the ability to decide when they’d be in combat vs. in dress uniform. They were forced into combat while in dress uniforms in some cases. This woman knew the requirements before she entered the military. Did she lie when she accepted the oath?

I have never been in the military but have played a lot of team sports at high levels. There you had to have discipline as well. The minute I read she was just about to cry I though wow that would enough for me not to have her on my team!

      @AxelPhantom

You’re welcome, but I did my service a long time ago…..1984-88. Reagan signed my discharge papers. I remember thinking how awful it would be to have Clinton sign them, and now we have Obummer….sigh.

Sorry honey in the Military you swear an outh to the constitution and follow the rule. Your muslim faith does not make the militays rules null and void. Be a soldier first!

@Crakaveli: “What about when it’s a Christian?“ Do you mean when they let ”gays” into the military?

Christians have been affected by military rules for well over 200 years. Haven’t noticed them making a fuss like this. I don‘t understand your point even though you’re just playing devils, er, I mean LEFTIST advocate.

Sheeeettt. Religion comes second to the mission. If I could let my men go to church services, I would. But if I needed them they would have wait for next visit by the padre. Every Saturday or Sunday, depending on your Sabbath, soldiers are on duty who would have liked to attend church but don’t.
