Muslim High School Student Remains True to Islamic Modesty Code — Even on the Soccer Field

Serene Kergaye takes her faith very seriously. In a unique report from Deseret News, we learn that the young high schooler is so devout that she wears a headscarf, long pants and long sleeves even when she’s working up a sweat on the soccer field.

The Cottonwood High School (Murray, Utah) student is a Muslim who is intent on wearing her religious clothing in any and all scenarios. While some sports enthusiasts may do a double-take upon seeing the junior varsity girls soccer starter’s outfit, by covering up, Kergaye is able to uphold her faith’s modesty standards.

And in case there are any concerns, the clothing poses no problems when it comes to giving her an advantage — something that is often considered in these situations (after all, it’s unfair to allow someone to wear clothing or accessories that would give them increased abilities).

Kergaye acknowledges that her clothing is a bit unconventional, but she explains that it’s a choice and that the clothing is actually quite comfortable. ”It’s really thin and loose. It’s not that hot, I don’t think,” she says. “Yeah, I look kind of weird on the field. I’ll be dressed head to toe in one color, because we have to be either white or black, but oh well, I’d rather play.”

The state allows for uniform rules to be flexible so that individuals, like Kergaye, can remain true to their faith while engaging in their sport of choice.

Bart Thompson, assistant director of the Utah High School Activities Association, explains this rationale: ”(We want) to allow the individuals to maintain practices and still compete.” He continues:

“The rules are written to promote fair, even competition for everybody. If you‘ve got a situation that doesn’t fundamentally alter the competition, you’re going to be OK.”

Kergaye hopes that her outfit will help people see that Islam isn’t an extremist faith. ”We don’t sit in our basements all day and make bombs,” she explains. “We play soccer, we play football.”

Her dedication to her sport and her faith bring about great praise from her coach and her teammates, alike. Ali Bromley-Dulfano, who is on Kergaye’s team, said, ”Of all the girls on the team, Serene probably puts the most into her playing.” The team’s coach, Angela Hamilton, reiterates this message, saying, “She’s just a very sweet person anyway, and the girls just…they love her.”

Ahh…more and more stories like this let me see the religious right nutjobs that the left likes to talk about. We get people that don’t talk about the actual story, but start railing on why someone else‘s faith is wrong and evil and vile and why they shouldn’t be in this country.

Well…I’m sorry to say to you Christians…but you should get out of this country as well then. You obviously don’t like that people in this country have religious freedom. They can believe, worship, or totally ignore whatever faith and dieties they so wish. If this girl is a devout Muslim, then so be it. You might think it is wrong, and that is your right, but you need to grow up and respect that other people make different choices than you. To them, you are the one that seems bigotted and idiotic in your choice.

On that note: Some of you religious folk need to go read your bibles again. I could have sworn there was a lot of stuff in there about how you are not supposed to judge any other because that is god’s place, and his alone…

But hey, I’m an atheist who has studied more religions than almost anyone here, I’m willing to bet. So, what do I know?

      Dear ‘Ravenglenn’,

As a self proclaimed atheist who as read lots of religious texts, surely you must know that atheists are the most despised of the ‘infidels’. While Islamic dogma permits ‘People of the Book’ (Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, Sabians) the option to be forcibly converted to Islam, killed, or to live as subjugated second class citizens known as dhimmis, atheists are only given the choice to convert to Islam or be killed.

      Atheists are Islam’s enemy #1.

Oh, and by the way, why do you in your blind prejudice label us who oppose Islam as Christians and ‘religious right nut jobs’?

‘WE’ are Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Baha’i, Zoroastrians, Amadiyya, pagans, animists, atheists, children, women, gays, apostate Muslims …..all victims of this young ladies ‘religion’. ‘WE’ are the line of defense standing up for your right to be an atheist.

‘WE’ are not one religion or of one faith. ‘WE’ are you.

I’m curious, how does this have anything to do with the comment to which you are replying?

Person A. Stop persecuting other religions. You come off as religious nutjobs.
Person B. They hate you!!! This little girl is going to grow up to strap bombs to herself and kill you, you atheist!!
Person A. … Thank you for making my point for me.

It’s a pretty nice story overall; I’m glad she can be true to her religious inclination and still have fun with non-religious friends.

      Dear ‘Locked’,

Would you support the right of the child of a white-supremacist KKK grand poobah to send his kid to school in a pointy hooded white robe? Probably not.

How would you feel if a family of ‘moderate NAZIs’ moved in next door to you and sent their kids to school adorned with SS death heads and perverted swastikas? Probably not good.

Would you agree that Charles Manson was a sadistic sociopathic mass murderering megalomaniac who should be reviled, not revered, by his ‘Manson Family’ of brainwashed zombies, and that their efforts to propagate Manson‘s ideology as a ’religion’ should be vigorously resisted? Probably yes.

Why then would you accept Muhammed (also a sadistic sociopathic mass ordering megalomaniac) as a ‘holy prophet’ acceptable to revere and not a man to revile? Why would you simply accept people’s efforts to propagate the intolerant, violent, supremacist, totalitarian ideology of Islam as a ‘religion’?

If you would stand against Hitler, the KKK, and Charles Manson, why would you not stand against Muhammed and Islam?

You don’t know anything for sure I would bet. If you allow every religion into your thoughts then all you have is a salad smorgasboard. A little of this and a little of that…Jesus Christ loved you so much that He put Himself in a position to die for your sins, so you could have real life in Him. And all you do is go around studying every other religion so that you can preach to people, something you do not understand yourself. This is a major deception going on in your soul.
Yes, Christians are suppose to love others as they would like to be loved, but remember this..Christians are NOT perfect. They were born with all the flaws you were born with…The difference is, that when a person places their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, they have life…eternal life in Christ and those who don’t…don’t.
So, we are not talking about who is better than someone else, but rather who is better off…

This is nothing but one great story and confirms our U.S.A’s dedication to religious freedom and tolerance. So why are you foaming in your month and spouting anti-Christian hate rhetoric? In my younger days I have travelled through Europe, Africa (yes, Moslem countries too) and Asia (yes, Buddhist and Hindu countries too). No country beat the U.S. in religious tolerance. More power to that young lady and her religious fervor! My Christian heart admires her. Man, you are something else . . . I don’t know ONE Christian that has said that Muslims need to leave America or that they cannot practice their faith as they see fit, as long as that does not include blowing up innocent people because Islam requires EVERY Muslim to go on a holy war (Jihad) (meaning blowing people up for Allah, their moon god they worship) or be considered a “bad” Muslim.

Then, I noticed that you say you are an atheist – meaning that you and those like you are the only ones who deserve to live in America – every person of any religious faith should be forced to leave America – that would mean all the other religions that do not believe in God, but worship some other god, which you and the rest of the mob of atheists have no problem with, should also leave – who would that leave behind if we all left – hmmmmm . . . a godless bunch of morons – sounds like brain dead logic to me . . .

Ah, where to begin…forgiveness…do not judge…tolerance? For all of the opinions expressed, each has some degree of validity however miss the basic point. Christianity and Islam are going to be forever at odds. They have been since the beginning. Christians..contrary to actions and popular belief are supposed to approach EVERYONE with an attitude of love and respect with the hope that God will lead that person to Himself. Christians hope that non-believers will come to accept and acknowledge Jesus Christ as their savior…voluntarily. If not, it is not our problem. Islam teaches that they have the responsibility…indeed obligatiton to FORCE people to make a choice between what they believe and anything else. The extreme Islamic believers interprete their scripture to authorize them to kill ANYONE not converting to Islam. Christians are supposed to approach non believers with love and forgiveness…Muslims are supposed to convert others or dispose of them. Pretty simple. One last thought…this very brave and ambitious girl is able to freely express her faith here in the USA with little fear for her LIFE. I would say the same would not be true of any Christian in a place such as Iran or Egypt. Do a little research on the news reporter in Egypt and see how she was treated. I support this young soccer player to dress as she chooses, regardless of her faith. It would not be so under Islam, plain and simple.

What the hell is wrong with that. Oh perhaps, you think I’m one of a few who believe this way – no, I think I am one of the majority – we United States citizens have nothing but love for our fellow man – of course there are a few that are so critical, and racially biased. She’s not comfortable in her own skin because misogynist Islamic doctrine demeans women and humiliates them.

It is why Islamic male chauvinists may “Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four”-Quran (4:3), but why this poor girl may only marry one husband.

It is why Muhammed rationalized “is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?’  They replied in the affirmative.  He said, ‘This is the deficiency in her intelligence.’”-Sahih Bukhari (6:301)

It is why Muhammeds favorite wife Aisha, whom he ‘married’ at age 6 and raped at age 9 (when he was 52) said to Muhammad “You have made us equal to the dogs and the asses” - Muslim (4:1039)

No, this is about Islamic misogyny, inspired by Allah, mandated b Muhammed, commanded in the Quran and sahih Ahadith. It s about treating women as subhumans, as sexual chattel.

No, if it were about her being comfortable in her own skin she wouldn’t have to cover it like some sort of PulpFiction gimp sex slave.

If she was comfortable in her own skin she would have a problem with the reasons why her faith requires her, as a woman, to cover herself from head to toe in the first place. It’s not normal to want to completely cover yourself when working up a major sweat doing an intense sport, and neither is it normal to feel “comfortable” with being told you’re a degree below men. The reason these quotes trouble me. My son went to elementary school with a Muslim boy, they were very good friends. I had no problem with this, I always taught my children to judge a person by what is in their heart, not by skin color or religion. Unfortunately when the boys tried to get together outside of school, we found out very quickly how the parents strongly discouraged this, in fact, they were downright rude about it. I had no idea at that time about these Quran quotes, versus, whatever you call them. After 9/11 it became very clear to me, that if they allowed the boys to become friends, it may be impossible for him to fight a friend. This is evil, these were two young boys who really liked each other, and to this day my son remembers him, now we see his family in a whole new light. - the Koran
      - the Sunnah/Ahadith
      - the Sira Rasul Allah (the biography of Muhammed – especially important)

It is this set of writings, preached in the mosques around the world, that indoctrinates Muslims and establishes Islamic civilizational consciousness. It is what we must know to understand the ideology, the supposed ‘theology’, of Islam which seeks to destroy our cultures (we being Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Baha’i, Zoroastrians, Amadiyya, pagans, animists, atheists, children, women, gays, apostate Muslims …..all victims of this young ladies ‘religion’).

      Piper,

Please stop confusing stupid generalizations for argument. In many sects of Christianity women are told they must serve and obey their husbands. Jewish law as practiced by the Orthodox requires women to cover their hair in public for the sake of modesty, and many have to shave it off! Men to not have to do this–this is a significant difference.

Many Muslim men DO abide by certain dress codes. And some Muslim women cover themselves by choice. In a free country, this is no business of yours.

The only difference is that she‘s also wearing a full body suit under the uniform with the same color as the uniform or in a color that does not confuse the other team into thinking she’s a player of their team at first glance. That is perfectly legal.

I used to wear long sleeve shirts under my jersey all the time when the weather was colder than I liked and considering the size of the team socks (up to my knees) the only difference between her and some of the games I played was about four inches of exposed skin above my knee and the head covering (which is also legal, we had a goalie who used to play wearing a baseball cap).

What makes this story important is not what she is wearing, but what her misogynistic, apartheid, violent, supremacist, totalitarian ‘religion’ actually teaches & what she as a pious Muslima believes:

I wondered if Iranian women played soccer so I did some checking and found that they had put together a team for the 2012 olympics but were tossed out by FIFA right before a match in June because of the headscarfs being a “choking hazard”. Then I found the obstacles they had met. By law, Iranian women are required to cover their hair, neck, arms, and legs in public—and that includes sports. Religious conservatives in Iran have long argued against women playing sports in public or even attending football matches with male players. After years of lobbying by female athletes, a national women’s football team was finally formed in 2005, though male spectators are banned from attending their matches. Conservative critics still lash out regularly at female athletes. Last year Grand Ayatollah Ali Safi Golpayegani said that female athletes winning sports medals is a form of “humiliation.” Strange to me, but to each her own.

Darren, If this story and the pictures were posted in the predominently muslim Middle East, I can guarantee you that this would not inspire muslims to feel warm and fuzzy about freedom of religion. In fact, just the opposite. The american girls who are showing a little healthy skin on the legs and arms would be called infidel whores that should be raped and stoned. This picture would give islam more reason to subdue the immodest infidel. Honestly Darren, you need to study islam. I have studied islam for 10 years. I know for a fact that Infidel Alliance tells you the truth. I have also heard with my own ears muslims say regarding our daughters, mothers and sisters they are calling them whores. Why? just because a little skin is showing on the legs and arms. This story and picture of Kergaye is heartwarming, but it’s not portraying the real world of islam. If islam only affected muslims like all other religions do, it would be ok. But the doctrine of Islam affects us all because Islam is for world domination, power and rule over all people and lands. Muslims believe this to be true and holy and Jihad is the way. Study!

This makes me sick. If we were to go to another country (any other country with different dress/religious codes than ours, we would absolutely be demanded to OBEY THEIR LAWS & dress code. So, why isn’t it politically correct for others to follow our dress codes, or lack thereof, when they come to America?

Than instead of getting sick, get grateful that you live in the USA and that Serene lives in a state which honors religious liberty.

“So, why isn’t it politically correct for others to follow our dress codes, or lack thereof, when they come to America?”

Here’s what the article says: “And in case there are any concerns, the clothing poses no problems when it comes to giving her an advantage — something that is often considered in these situations (after all, it’s unfair to allow someone to wear clothing or accessories that would give them increased abilities),” and, “The state allows for uniform rules to be flexible so that individuals, like Kergaye, can remain true to their faith while engaging in their sport of choice”.

What’s so “politically correct, or anti-conservative, or anti-Christian about any of that?

By that rationale, we should also use other countrie’s laws as a base to our laws since you seem to think we should treat people from other cultures as their cultures would treat us… Is that what you want? Her culture might force Christians to worship Islam or die, should we force her to be a Christian or die? If she was Pakistani, should we force her family to kill her if some thug raped her on the way back from soccer practice?

There’s absolutely no problem in her wearing those clothes to participate in the sport if they have no impact on the result of the game or other players…. You’re just coming off as hateful…

There are recent stories of High School coaches getting in trouble for bowing their heads during a student-led prayer and another where a teacher punished a student for saying “God Bless You”, but this goes along with years of people trying to scrub out any mention of God in the pledge of allegiance, roadblocking formation of student Bible groups, or any number of similar things that have been going on in public schools over the years. I understand that public school shouldn’t be “Weekday Church for Kids” but when you are putting a clamp on personal religion expressed by students and teachers, you are going way beyond just separating church and state. You are headed into censorship of thought. Is it really too far of a leap for you to understand?

Q #4 Does this team practice on any fields fertilized by pig manure ?

Fun Questions aside, this article is a rare example of how freedom and respect can both exist in the same field.

      Team sports are Performance based.
If that outfit handicaps her where she gets cut, then she has no reason to complain. In fact, she should praise her god all the same. Staying on or getting cut should just be accepted as her god’s will. If she scores, she should not break out the beheading sword.

HuckleberryFriend….i don’t HAVE to make a distinction between the two, i am pointing out the similarities. and therefore the hypocrisy. This liberals of this country like to hang on the fallacy of the “Separation of Church and State”, yet they don’t apply their same “rule” for everyone. The term “Religion” is just a word, there are people who claim their religion is Wicca, some Rastafarian. and so on, though many don’t recognize them as “Religions”. Let’s throw that word out for a moment, and let me make it clear, that this country is “making room” for this little girl, while they misrepresent what the Muslim faith truly stands for. They CLEARLY, under NO uncertain terms, tell their followers to cloak themselves and lie if that’s what you must do to advance their cause… To kill all infidels. That being said. no other “Religion” or group does that (say whatever lie you want in retort). Though I do not condone or associate myself with them AT ALL, I am quite sure there are MANY KKK members that just want to follow their core belief, that…well…to put it simply, to perpetuate the white race, and that is EXACTLY what Muslims want, to perpetuate THEIR “Religion”. MANY races and religions have the same desires. The fact is, in this country, especially after 9/11, makes great strides to coat Muslims in Teflon, behind the Constitutional right to “Freedom of Religion”, but if you are a Jew, or a Christian, you are “Persona Non Grata”.

Just as ALL things in life are a “Double Edged Sword”, it only takes time, for an evil person to figure out how to use it for evil. Our “Founding Fathers” didn’t even know what a plane was, or a phone, or a bomb (as we know it). If you brought them forward into the future, to see what we have become, I am quite sure they would turn and run back to the comfort of their graves. You are saying that Jews and Christians are “Persona Non Grata”, but then you turn around and want to make Muslims “Persona Non Grata.” Freedom of religion comes with the right to disagree with others. As long as we are deciding which religions are right, wrong, or evil and should be illegal, we are infringing on our own rights along with the rights of others.

You claim that their teachings point towards lying and misrepresentation of the true form of their religion to cloak this nougaty center of violence. I contend that, even if this is a mainstream practice, there are examples of where that kind of theology is not adhered to. Just like in Christianity, it all goes back to how you interpret the source material. You bring up the KKK, and that is a great example of how people twist the context of the Bible in order to propagate violence and racism. What about the parts in the Old Testament where the Israelites kill off entire other tribes, men, women, and children? Couldn’t somebody use that as a basis for killing and genocide in the name of God? Hitler and his ilk claimed that Protestant Christianity was part of being a good Nazi and twisted its meaning to suit their desires. Does that mean that all Christians are violent racists? What if the majority of Christians in the world adhered to the KKK or Nazi theologies? Should Christianity not be considered a religion and therefore outlawed?

Yes, religion can be used for evil, and people with differing faiths have persecuted each other for centuries, but that is why many many people came to America, where you can be religion X, and the person next to you can be religion Y, and you don’t have to kill each other over it.

Our enemy is religiously motivated. We can keep killing them as if the war is a continuation of the crusades, but it’s exceedingly costly and difficult if not impossible, for militarism to kill a religion.

Angel Gabriel, God’s messenger who appeared to the Virgin Mary, is revered in Islam for imparting the Koran to Muhammad in 610 AD. Islam however, has yet to undergo a modern reformation.

Given it’s common origin, just as the Old Testament was adjoined with the Christian New Testament, the Koran must be similarly revised to substitute religious tenets of peace, tolerance and forgiveness as taught by Christ, for outdated dictates. Retaining obsolete teachings, whether metaphoric or not, can only misguide modern Muslims into misery, conflict and death. Devoutness must no longer be misconstrued to sanction Islamic intolerance, oppression and violence, be it directed at one person, one group or an entire populace.

Muslims might then live a peaceful life of enlightened reverence and service, not servitude. A revised Koran would encourage embracing a peaceful life resplendent with spiritual prosperous purpose, as opposed to perpetuating primitive predilections for fearful savagery.

Tyrannical insularity must be replaced by respect for humanity “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” as justly deserved and equally desired by all humanity.

Your post was right on! There is tolerance and then there is allowing one religion to be above the rest. That is what we have seen with regards to Islam. It is ok to burn a Bible, but not the Koran. It is ok to mock God, but not Allah. It is ok to take rights from those of other religions, but allowances must always be made for Muslims or they hide behind religious discrimination.

Muslims are very interested in spreading their religion to others using any means possible. We know they employ violence in the form of terrorist attacks and even clothing as this article discusses. Others may see this as a positive integration because this girl is playing soccer; however, I am insulted for her. It is degrading that she can’t wear the same type of clothing as her co-students on the soccer field. Another interesting thing is that she is setting herself apart and saying “I am Muslim”; dare you to discriminate. This is using our freedoms against us; entering our society and bringing a backwards and often violent religion to the forefront when is not compatible with our freedom-loving society.

      Islam treats women terribly!

This is a nice story about a young lady staying true to her beliefs. Anyone trying to turn this into an “us vs them” christianity vs islam issue is not only a hateful douche bag but an idiot as well.
