CAIRO (AP) — Muslim mobs set two Cairo churches on fire overnight during sectarian clashes that left 12 dead and more than 200 injured. The deepening religious violence in military-ruled Egypt exacerbated an already chaotic and lawless transition to democracy.
Mobs of ultraconservative Muslims attacked the St. Menas church in the Cairo slum of Imbaba late Saturday following rumors that a Christian woman married to a Muslim man had been abducted. Local residents said a separate mob of youths armed with knives and machetes attacked the Virgin Mary church several blocks away with firebombs.
“People were scared to come near them,” said local resident Adel Mohammed, 29, who lives near the Virgin Mary Church. “They looked scary. They threw their firebombs at the church and set parts of it ablaze.”
Islamic clerics denounced the violence, sounding alarm bells at the escalating tension during the transitional period.
“These events do not benefit either Muslim or Copts,” Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the Sheik of al-Azhar, told the daily Al-Ahram.
Interfaith relationships are taboo in Egypt, where the Muslim majority and sizable Christian minority are both largely conservative. Such relationships are often the source of deadly clashes between the faiths.
During Egypt’s 18-day uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak several months ago, there was a rare spirit of brotherhood between Muslims and Christians. Each group protected the other during prayer sessions in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the revolution.
But in the months that followed the toppling of Mubarak on Feb. 11, there has been a sharp rise in sectarian tensions, fueled in part by newly active ultraconservative Muslim movement, known as the Salafis.

The once quiescent Salafis have become more assertive post-revolution in trying to spread their ultraconservative version of an Islamic way of life. In particular, they have focused their wrath on Egypt’s Christians, who make up 10 percent of the country’s 80 million people.
On Friday, a few hundred Salafis marched through Cairo celebrating al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and condemning the U.S. operation that killed him.
Critics say Egyptian military authorities have done too little to stem the religious violence. But authorities arrested 190 people, immediately, sending them to military prosecutions and threatening the maximum penalty against anyone attacking houses of worship. It was the military’s toughest response yet to a series of violent clashes between the two religious groups.
Egypt’s state news agency said of those killed, at least six Muslims and at least three Christians were among those killed. The body of one Christian was found inside the St. Menas church, the agency said. The Health Ministry said 12 had died and more than 230 were injured, at least 11 of them critically.
The clashes were set off Saturday around sundown when word spread around the low-income neighborhood of Imbaba that a Christian woman who married a Muslim was abducted and is being kept in the church against her will.
The report, which was never confirmed by local religious figures, sent a large mob of Muslims toward the St. Menas church. Christians created a human barricade around the church and clashes erupted. Gunfire sounded across the neighborhood, and witnesses said people on rooftops nearby were firing into the crowd.
Muslims alleged the Christians opened fire first. Then crowds of hundreds of Muslims from the neighborhood, in many parts instigated by the local ultraconservative Salafi sheiks, converged on the area. They lobbed firebombs at homes and shops and also at St. Menas church, setting its facade on fire.
Residents say Christians were hiding inside. Muslims were chanting: “With our blood and soul, we defend you Islam.”
The army and police tried to break up the crowd by firing tear gas, but failed to clear the streets. Troops surrounded the church after the fire was put out.
Later the same night, witnesses said a separate Muslim mob, mostly youths armed with machetes and knives, moved to the Virgin Mary church nearby and also set it on fire.
The mob then dispersed to side streets, and local residents, including the neighborhood’s Muslims, tried to put out the fire. At one point, they attempted to get into the closed mosque opposite the church to get water. But the youthful mob armed with knives blocked Mohammed and others in his group.
“They told us keep the mosque out of it,” said Mohammed, who lives near the church. “They were thugs. The way they talk, they have no religious or political views.”
He said the firefighters and security arrived on the scene more than an hour later.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, angry residents stormed a six-story building near the St. Menas, saying Christians used it to shoot at Muslims.
“They were shooting from the roof, and they killed Muslims,” said 18-year old Yehia Ramadan. “We won’t stand by idle.”
Flames were coming out of windows, and furniture were strewn along the sidewalks. The building appeared to be empty, but it was not clear when its residents fled.
The new tensions erupted after a year of Salafi protests against the alleged abduction by the Coptic Church of a priest’s wife, Camilla Shehata. The Salafis claim, she converted to Islam to escape an unhappy marriage — a phenomenon they maintain is common.
If a Christian woman marries a Muslim, she is expelled from the church. A Muslim woman is not allowed to marry a Christian man, according to state law. Because divorce is banned under the Coptic Church, with rare exceptions, some Christian women resort to conversion to Islam or another Christian denomination to get out of a marriage.
Salafis have used the case of Shehata as a rallying point for their supporters and they accuse the police of collaborating with the church to reconvert her.
Her case was even used by Iraq’s branch of al-Qaida as a justification for an attack on a Baghdad church that killed 68 people and other threats by the group against Christians.
On Saturday just before the violence erupted in Imbaba, Shehata appeared with her husband and child on a Christian TV station broadcast from outside of Egypt and asserted that she was still a Christian and had never converted.
“Let the protesters leave the Church alone and turn their attention to Egypt’s future,” she said from an undisclosed location.
Copts complain of widespread discrimination that they say relegates them to second-class citizen status, including tight strictures on building or repairing churches that do not exist for Muslim places of worship.
In the deadliest violence since Mubarak’s ouster, 13 were killed in pitched street battles in March after Muslims torched a church. That violence was also triggered by rumors of a love affair between a Muslim woman and a Christian man.
A New Year’s Eve suicide bombing outside a Coptic church in the port city of Alexandria killed 21 people, setting off days of protests. Egypt made some arrests but never charged anyone with the attack.

Sameh Fawzi, a Coptic scholar, said the new trend of attacks on churches and heightened tension between ultraconservative Muslims and Copts are taking place in the context of a weakened state and increasingly assertive Salafis.
The military rulers’ attempts to hold reconciliation sessions, instead of prosecuting those involved, only serves to reinforce the impression of the state’s weakness, he said.
“What needs to happen and quickly is that the state implements the law,” he said. “This is a crime of thuggery and it should be treated as such.”

That’s why our founders gave us a constitutional representative republic. Actual democracy in our constitutional system? ZERO. It’s everywhere diluted, precisely so as to restain momentary passions and obstruct oppressive majorities.

Mob rule happens when even the majority don’t care about reasoning things out but rather rules from their emotions. And it is a typically Muslin feature to rule from rage.
I’m a selectman up in Maine in a very small town. It’s pure democracy. Majority rules and all that. But we don’t go around burning down buildings of minorites. We aren’t savages.

Oh, I understand what you’re saying, but let me ask: In your small town, do you elect a city council that votes on ordinances? If so, as with most small town, you don’t have a democracy. You have a representative democracy. If all citizens of voting eligibility can vote on every issue facing the town, THEN you have a democracy. And then you have what is essentially also mob rule.
A mob doesn’t need to be marching in the streets to enact its tyranny.
I understand what you mean, and I realize there‘s a vast difference in the manner of gov’t in your town and say, Cairo.

Spontaneous democratic revolutions that degrade into the murder, mayhem, rape and pedophilia of an islami-facist theocracy aren’t exactly the stalwarts of religous tolerance. You haven’t seen anything yet. Thousands are to die and Coptic Christians are only the first. What will obama say then? Will he rush to the aid of civilians systematically being slaughtered when they are just Christians? Will he demand that Christians not be put to death for proselytizing? Will he demand that rape victims not be stoned to death for reporting the rape? Will he demand that gays not be hanged? Islam is a cult of murder, mayhem, rape and pedophilia and in every islama-facist country today, the people might just as well strap a bomb to their chests and get it over with because they have no peace to look forward to in this world.

Don’t judge the whole country by the actions of a few- especially when recent history has shown so many Egyptians standing together to protect and respect Copts and Muslims.
Remember that the American Revolution wasn’t a movement of the majority. It was a small group of “thugs.” Fortune favors the bold and in this case, it’s the extremists. That is something we should pay more attention to as the small number of extremists here are certainly bold.

The Musliim Brotherhood is the real danger now, as the son of Hamas once said (after converting to Christianity). He thinks it’ll spread and they will finally get united and have their caliphate. Just pure “deomcracy” is not good – the Founding Fathers said it was “mob rule” and that’s why they came up with the Republic part & all kinds of checks and balances. What do you think the majority in these Islamic nations would want? Yes – a country run by Sharia Law, and the goal of world takeover and destruction of Israel. Not good.

Islam is by its nature a violent religion, but that doesn’t mean that all Muslims HAVE to be violent. They have a choice, but we have to offer that choice to them. The problem is there are two types of atheists. One is common, and usually leftist: They adopted atheism as an escape from morality, having confused religion with the notion of ‘all morality.’ On the other hand, there are atheists like me who realized they were born atheists, and were never convinced of a belief in supernatural powers, not because they wished to avoid morality, but because they were on an honest search to define what is moral. That’s me. What I’ve discovered, long ago, is that I have much in common with Christians and Jews who wish for peace, but who know that sometimes peace must be MADE. Trust me, most of my friends adhere to some brand of Christianity or Judaism, and some of the people I hold in greatest disdain are self-described atheists, alway of the first type I described above. Good to know you.
There are good muslims who do not wish to kill all others. They are relatively rare, sadly.

The other 40% are driven by whomever is dominating the culture. They become an augmentation to the latter 30% in most cases, while the former 30% simply goes quiet.
That’s the reality on the ground. You’re seeing that played out in Egypt even now.

Thank you! You’re exceptionally kind. I am a ‘different kind of atheist.’ There are few like me. Those like me did not seek out atheism in order to hide from moral failings. We do not believe morality irrelevant, and in fact accept that all men must adopt some moral standard if only for the sake of survival. Many of those atheists with whom you’re familiar, and Dawkins is a perfect example, frankly, are atheists because the religiously-based moral standards with which they were acquainted offered condemnation of them in some respect. Men hate to live as hypocrites, so instead, they will shed whatever moral standard d*mns them as such.
A list of minor examples would include the Catholic woman who practices birth control, so flees catholicism because she can’t square the two. Or the homosexual who flees christianity because he cannot square the two. Or the unrepentent thief and liar who proclaims his atheism in order to say he need not be honest, and bears no guilt for his acts of theft. Adulterers frequently abandon religion.
All of them ignore that removing religion doesn’t remove the question of morality. I believe in an objective standard of morality. I believe man must live as man. He cannot live as goat or frog, and his moral standard must serve the life of man, as man.
Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I hope to see you around!

Counterexample: Egypt. You know, the very country this article is about. Where Coptic Christians have been living alongside Muslims for centuries. Also, you probably read how almost 200 people have been arrested and are awaiting trial.

Do you know ANYTHING about Islam and Islamic rule. Those Christians have been living as second class citizens, Dhimmis. Christians are not allowed to evangelize Muslims but the same is not true in reverse. A Muslim man who converts to Christianity can prosecuted. It is a crime to defame Islam, a crime that is VERY loosely defined. But it is no crime to defame Christianity.

Posted on May 8, 2011 at 7:19pm@ non sequitur, your line of reasoning just does not follow any correct understanding of history. Why, Egypt after the pharoahs and the Greek Ptolemeis and the Roman Classicists was largely a Christian nation (ask Hypatia) until the advent of Islam. Thereafter the Christians and Pagans have been slowly yet effectively exterminated. The destruction of the Ottoman Empire may have forestalled this inevitable result of endeavoring to coexist with Islam but unless the West prevails the Copt will be annihilated. There is no doubt. They feel that ‘democracy’ is acceptable as an illusion, while the few ‘elect’ control everything for real. To put an old bible saying in another light of example, in such a system they follow the forms of democracy while denying the ruled the true power inherit in the system of a democracy, or ESPECIALLY a REPUBLIC.
And yes, if we chose to allow either side to take away the Republic from us, then we will become such as is now emerging in the middle east – a communist, a socialist or a theocracy of some type will arise to take the vacuumed space where we once had freedom.

But once taken over and riots with killing begin against Christians or Jews they automatically become conservative extremists. Makes sense doesn’t it? Even the Libyan government was considered conservative by the woman who was raped by the soldiers, and the progressive press ate that right up.

The only way to resolve this war that has been ongoing since the seventh century ( yes, it is a goldurned perpetual and neverending war) is the total destruction of Islam. It is no longer Carthago delenda est. It is Islam that must be destroyed. We have no choice. We will be fighting them a thousand years from now if we do not destroy them now. The West has been fighting them for 1400 years already. Read your history. Read about the invasion of Christian Spain and France. The slave raids into Italy and England and Ireland. The conquest of Greece and Macedonia and the Balkans and the invasion of Austria. The slave traders in Sub Saharan Africa. More black slaves went to the markets in the Islamic world than went to the Americas and Western Europe. (That is why I have to laugh at the folk who give up their Western slave names to proudly take up their Arabic slave names. What sad, misguided, ignorant, racist fools.) As the power of the West, by our own hands, recedes the ascendancy of Islam is assured. Taqquiya, jizya, Islam. Submit or die. Those are our choices. When the emasculated leaders of Western Europe finally say that multi cultural diversity has failed who do you think they are talking about? The Mayans? The Amish? Yes folks, a democracy can have a dictator, be socialist (like us now), fascist, etc….Democracy does not equal freedom….Democracy just means majority rule….
Looking like Iran is winning the social war with the Saudis….
As much as I’d like to blame “progressives” for starting these uprisings, I can’t for it would be lying….Iran isn’t dumb and needs the USA backed dictators, Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Yemen, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait to fall so that radicals as themselves will rise to power to join Iran in the Caliphate….The progressives encouraged these uprisings once started playing right into the hands of Iran….We give to much credit to progressives without seeing the big picture….Iran caused all this, except Syria, which the uprising there wS Saudi backed in retaliation….Think…
Muslim Brootherhood, Al-Qaeda, and Hamas do not like those dictators, even being the same sect Sunni, as they sold out to the USA for $’s…These dictators are seen as puppets thru their eyes and are probably correct about it..

Hezbollah is Iranian (Shi’ite) while Hamas is Muslim Brootherhood (Sunni)…. Also recall Iran was our little puppet until the Shaw was thrown out by radicals, those in power now….They are doing the same thing within Sunni countries….
Those USA backed Sunni countries would never attack Israel for they would loose USA support….
I am no Neo-Con but maybe Israel ought to start making glass since this is in their region and a direct threat to them….NO the USA has no business in this…Especially since we sale weapons to Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia…Oh ya, Israel to…Just think a great big war with all American made weapons….Weird isn’t it..

To be a part of a heritage of people that sacrificed thousands upon thousands so that they could live freely for what they believed in is prime example of why America needs to survive the coming days. The Huguenots had to flee their homelands to America in order to practice their religion, in America we have no where to flee as this is the last stand. Our troops in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt Iraq and Afghanistan and any other Muslim nation is seen as an act of war. Not submitting to Islam is an act of war. The geo politics of the last century are meaningless. It could be oil then, or grain, or slaves or the Mediterranean trade routes in the middle ages or whatever. The driving force is an imperialistic, unrelenting messianic religious impetus that wants to control every aspect of our lives from what we wear to what we eat to our entertainment etc. No wonder the Progs get along so well with the Muslims. I agree that we need to have our troops on our southern borders but if you don’t think that Islam is not in Mexico or Argentina or Guatamala or Trinidad and Tobago and Dearborn, Michigan then you are sadly misinformed. And this same old tired argument about war for oil is pathetic. How much oil have we received from Vietnam? Or Iraq? The only war for oil I see is the one started by Obama in Libya. Heck, they even said if the rebels there don’t start sending out oil there going to stop aid. No offense but how up is that? The war is with Islam. More…

Posted on May 8, 2011 at 10:40pmLook at how many people there are. Does this look like a handful of lunatics? We have face the fact that there is evil in the world and we are looking at it right here. Putting our collective heads in the sand will only allow this evil to grow. It’s time to put away the PC BS, act like adults and deal with it head on. They only understand force. Anyone leader who plays the game of appeasement with them is causing harm to the world.

Posted on May 8, 2011 at 10:57pmAnd China and Russia. As far as supporting dictators go I would entertain any resolutions that would realistically resolve that situation. Realistically. I would think that we would have loved to defeat Germany and Japan without Stalin. I would love to welcome Oakland, California back into the fold but they despise the police there. And Philadelphia and Detroit, et al. ad nauseum. They think our police departments throughout the nation are nothing but tinpot dictators killing and torturing the citizens in their jurisdictions. So I suppose it is just best that we scrap that system and just turn it over to who? Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam? The New Black Panthers? The KKK? It’s an ugly world out there brother and they will slit our throats the first chance they get. As soon as an area is stabilized get those dictators out. Now you tell me how does Islam want to stabilize the Middle east? The question always is how much self governance can humanity sustain with the most amount of individual liberty and self determination before the system collapses in chaos. I think that is all it really boils down to. I regret that these thoughts cannot be expressed in brief. Clarity also suffers in these off the cuff debates. But I appreciate your point of view on these issues and I would hope that at some future date the world will be able to co exist under democratic republics that extol personal responsibility and individual liberty. Talk about dreaming, eh! For our kids.

Islam has rose 3 times, 3 different woes, this last one is the 3rd…Each time Islam rises it brings an empire down…
1st time: The Demise of Eastern Rome (Pagan dominant/mixed “Christianity”, false religion)
2nd time: The Demise of Papal Rome (The papal power who killed 50-100 million Christians, false religion)
3rd: Happening now….(Against the Roman Armies, USA, 2nd beast)
History does not lie and neither does a Bible…
America, if you believe in God, read the Word, understand your commandments and get right with God….The one TRUE God!

Well let’s talk this thru as Americans should do..I appreciate this dialogue as it will help all of us…
Islam is a false religion but everything can be used by God…
First: would our Founders do what we are doing today?
Second: if not for oil, $’s on munitions, control, why are we in the Middle East? Democracy? I thought you said toppling a dictator, Mubarak, was bad and a progressive thing…Seems inconsistent….Please clearly articulate why we are in the Middle East…
Third: do you believe if an Islamic country put in a puppet dictator here in the USA Americans Citizens wouldn’t rise up in the name of God to topple and attack? Please answer this question…
Fourth: If Israel is our Ally, why sale weapons, tanks, planes to Islamic countries?
Fifth: how was Russia collapsed?
Last: is killing in the name of God right?
I look forward to your response and thoughts…And I do appreciate this respectful dialogue…

We must close the doors to the Muslim Barbarians!

1st i’m not sure why the attack if your a christian. read my post again. it’s in defence of christians. and you can believe the pc crap if you want but the facts remain:
Report Post »1 the hate all but islam
2 they seek to exterminate all but islam
3 you can thank the idiots on the left for complicity to the enemy just as the left is doing now
4 the facts are that you will be killed if they get half a chance
5 the only thing that will keep them in check is naked power.. anything else they see as weakness and an excuse to shove a bomb up your rectal cavity
6 we are the friend to Israel ..it’s the f*** lib/progressive/marxist/statist that are’nt.. this is where i get P.O.ed because sheeple don’t pay attention nor heed warnings from those who are thier friends. the enemy is in your home.wake up!
secondly, time is up and you’d best be at peace with your beliefs and yourself. i have been. it’s going to get real ugly and how many of you are prepared to face your oun brainwashed youth? it’s your fault that they are brainwashed. you let them go unattended. then , spit in the face of those who try to warn you. now how are you going to fix it. as for me i‘m trying to reach the youth with the history that they should have learned but did’nt. Knowledge is our greatest arm.

What attack are you referring to? How is it I’ve offended you? Can you answer the 6 ?’s proposed to StormCrow? They should be easy to answer, shouldn’t they? Especially for a well knowledgeable person as you proclaim to be…
Yes Barbarian, I’m Christian…I believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost….Whom is it you believe in speaking with that cursing mouth?
I follow God’s commandments…Those ten things he wrote on stone in the Bible…I do NOT follow Roman commandments…Are you educated on the difference? And which do you follow?
My post to you was about Islam, how it has brought empires down proven by history, and how they can be related to the 3 woes..(3 woes are from the Bible if you weren’t aware.) Why do you assume this to be an attack? I will check back in the AM for your answers…

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 5:52amYes, this is what pure “democracy” looks like which is why our founders were wise enough to establish us a Representative Democracy Republic,, although, it appears, of late, in light of the Healthcare passage, only the Republic part still stands.

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 8:20amLast I knew. A democracy is “majority rules”! That is why America IS NOT a Democracy but a Republic. Damn Progressives think that by saying something over and over and making more and more useless “laws” that they will change the way America is! ….and to the Republic for which it stands……God Bless America!

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 11:42amHave to say, OKIE, you ask lots and lots of questions, but give little info. Perhaps you just want to be better informed? That’s not what it sounds like. I learned a lot more from STORMCROW and the BARBARIAN than from thinking about your rhetorical questions.

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 12:29pmHowdy GetLife! Hope your doing well today…
Yes, questions are good and once answered by the questioned, provide info about their views… Questions also allow the questioned to think and decide themselves, instead of someone just stating and telling someone how to think…And GetLife, any sentence by me ending with a ? isn’t rhetorical…
Would you care to share what you learned from StormCrow and TheBarbarian? Would you care to answer the 6 questions presented to StormCrow?
Also any info you would like from me, you are more then welcome to ask and I will respectfully respond to the best of my ability…
Being someone advocating a test and wanting to educate Americans, I believed you would appreciate questions..I look forward to your response..

If you choose to go to hell you will go there as an intruder. Jesus paid the price so that you may be free from sin. However, you will have to accept God on his terms – no matter how much education or “thinkin’” you do, when the breath of life leaves your body, please remember this Bible Qoute, “Jesus Saves”. When you reject the truth, all you have then is a lie. Good Luck, because it sounds like your lack of faith and unbelief will never let your heart speak louder than your mind.
