Muslim Prayers to Open Hartford City Council Meetings

While the nation remains divided over whether a mosque should be constructed near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, the city of Hartford, Conn., is going out of its way to show “solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters.”
Though the city doesn’t normally begin its council meetings with any sort of prayer, NBC Connecticut reports that the city council has invited local imams to deliver Islamic invocations at the beginning of council meetings during the month of September:
“One of the goals of the Council is to give a voice to the many diverse peoples of [New York] City, which is especially important given the recent anti-Islam events throughout the country.”
Council President rJo Winch (sic) called it an important move for the Council. “I feel it is very important that, as a Council, we project a culture of inclusiveness in the City of Hartford. Too often it is our differences that divide us. In my opinion, it is our combination of differences that makes us strong,” Winch said.
And what better way to promote equality and inclusiveness than to give preferential treatment to one group over another?

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:48pmIslam is not simply a religion, but an ideology that combines religion, politics, finance, and laws. It is an ideology that is incompatible with our Republic. What is next, the City of Hartford inviting members of the Communist Party USA to offer opening remarks in December?

In this case I have to say that Blaze did not give us the whole story. I also agree that… as the story says: “it is our combination of differences that makes us strong.”

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 10:06pmBut would have to be a combination, but unfortunately, only two really mix, judaism and christianity. Only these two teach that its adherants are responsible for the rest of mankind directly to God. Is immaterial what the rest of the world thinks, since not one word from the Word of God, aka the bible, will return void. Is why the liberals rage, they know their time is short.

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:34pmSounds good to me, so long as Hartford, Conn starts a regular rotation of guest religious speakers to deliver invocations. Perhaps October will be Paganism month, November will be Jewish, December will be Christian, January should be a good time for the Buddhists for no particular reason, etc.
Come to think of it most city council meetings have a time where anyone can take the floor and speak about anything of concern to them – could such a speaker get away with expressing that concern in the form of a prayer? ;)

We have to be religiously tolerant, but not with Christians.
We have to be ethnically tolerant, but not with white males.
We have to be economically tolerant, but not with the successful.
We have to be politically tolerant, but not to the Tea Party.
Let’s see… so as long as you are NOT a successful, white male who practices Christianity or affiliates with the Tea party, we’re tolerant.

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:13pmThis is ridiculous, just plain ridiculous. As a Christian, I’m offended. What the heck is the purpose of giving muslims preferential treatment? Did they ask to come and pray before meetings? Is the council inviting Christians and Jews to come and pray as well?
it’s not the praying that bothers me -it simply has no place in city council meetings. and the most interesting part is that they claim to be reaching out to their Muslim brothers and sisters. Huh??? …while stepping all over their Christian, Jewish, Mormon, etc. brothers and sisters.
Southern_Patriot
Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:11pmNo other prayers allowed? Sorry, that doesn‘t work if you are trying to ’project a culture of inclusiveness in the City of Hartford’. Sounds like the people of Hartford need to show some solidarity and get a new city council before they try to institute sharia law.
Report Post »Marylou7
Posted on September 8, 2010 at 2:17pmMaybe Sharia law is what Hartford wants. It is beyond my understanding as to why so many Americans are turning to our attackers with open arms. Don’t they realize these people hate them and see them are cowards, pathetic. But maybe all the citizens of Hartford are thinking of converting to Islam, then the Imams will tolerate them, maybe.

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:08pmI guess we see who they want solidarity with. Another case of out of control PC. Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:01pmYou know that would all well and good if the Muslim community would return the favor…..and that will never happen. So does this mean the next month Christians can lead the prayer. Im sure not.

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:00pmSo people can’t pray privately on the steps of the Supreme Court building, but there‘s absolutely no issue with opening a city council with a public prayer that’s, most likely, NOT of the majority’s religion, or non-denominational/sectoral in nature?
I suppose, since the Council is in no way a federal government, they have the right to do it. And honestly, I don’t really care if they do. I can just about guarantee, however, that if someone proposed a Christian prayer to show solidarity with the oppressed house-churches of China, not only would this be a huge city controversy, it’d be flaring up in national news everywhere.
Yep, religions are protected under the First Amendment. I’m simply fed up with the cultural double-standard set for Christianity vs. any other sort of religion.

I’d bet they used to have a prayer before every meeting! I am thrilled they are returning to prayer, but I certainly hope the constituents in that area demand that every religious point of view has an opportunity to lead the prayer portion of the meeting. I agree with Reverend that it is only appropriate to include various clergy.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 8:13amIslam in all its forms ranges from posing no threat at all to posing a threat to American lives. What it does not threaten is American ideology. Ideology is the end game. Neo-marxists are inflaming this conflict to demonstrate that capitalism does not work so that they can sweep in . Neo-marxists are also crashing your economy and dominating your school cirriculum. This is an on going effort that has waxed and waned since the country was founded.
This is a war of us verses them. Capitalist ideologists verses socialist ideologists. At this point it’s so far gone that it will take a joint effort of patriotic capitalistic demoncrats and republicans to purge this nation of the neo-marxist movement that threatens the balance that our ancestors of all races have fought so hard for.

If they are truly trying to promote a sense of inclusiveness, why not have representatives of all faiths in the local community rotate through leading the opening prayer. In the State of Nebraska, representatives of all faiths are invited to give the devotional prayer every morning of the working Unicameral. Those that want to participate do so. It is a fairer way to represent the faith of all Nebraskans. If a person in Nebraska feels like they are being slighted then they need look no further than their own religious leader and say, why haven’t you volunteered for the task?
