Muslims Cross Volatile Middle Eastern Boundaries in Attempt to Convert Jews

Muslims Cross Volatile Middle Eastern Boundaries to Evangelize Jews

JERUSALEM (AP) — In an unprecedented endeavor, a few Muslim believers are crossing the Holy Land’s volatile boundaries of culture, faith and politics to bring Islam to Israel’s Jews – hoping, improbably, that some will be willing to renounce their religion for a new one.

The bearded men approach Jews in and around the Old City of Jerusalem and try, in polite and fluent Hebrew, to convert them.

“I must tell you about the true faith,” said one missionary in a cobblestone plaza outside Jerusalem’s Old City. He carried a knapsack full of pamphlets about Islam in several languages, including Hebrew. “You can do with it what you want. But telling you is our duty.”

Most people, he said, brush him off and keep walking.

A computer programmer educated at an Israeli college, he sported a scraggly beard, loos

e pants and a long shirt typical of the purist Muslims known as Salafis. He gave his name only as Abu Hassan.

There are no signs the endeavor has met with any success. Only about a dozen Muslims are involved. Most of the handful of Jews who convert do so to marry Muslim men, rather than from proselytizing. Still, the act of spreading Islam in Hebrew is profound, reflecting a striking confidence on the part of some Muslims, members of Israel’s Arab minority.

It also reflects the influence of conservative Islamic trends that emphasize spreading the religion, transmitted through web forums and satellite channels from Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Abu Hassan said that in years of conflict with Israel, Muslims, embattled and angry, neglected their responsibility to preach their faith to nonbelievers, including Jews.

“Muslims did not want to talk, and Jews did not want to listen. But Jews also need to hear the truth,” he said.

Yitzhak Reiter, a professor at the Jerusalem Center for Israel Studies, said he had not seen anything similar in 30 years of studying local Islam. “This is the first time that someone has tried to convert Jews to Islam in the state of Israel,” he said.

The efforts seem to have attracted no public notice so far. But the missionaries are treading on a potentially explosive ta

boo. Centuries of persecution and aggressive conversion attempts by Christian and Muslim majorities have made Jews, numbering 13 million people worldwide, deeply hostile to proselytizing. Israeli law places some restrictions on missionary activity, forbidding targeting minors or offering financial incentives, but does not outlaw it altogether.

The Holy Land’s Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities all hold strong religious, tribal and ethnic bonds and deeply resist conversion. The result is a sort of loose understanding not to push the boundaries.

Azzam Khatib, a top Muslim official in Jerusalem, said the efforts to proselytize in

Hebrew were not mainstream, but acceptable: “Whoever wants to join, they are welcome – but without any pressure.”

Four years ago, Abu Hassan said, an Israeli Jew approached him with questions about Islam. At the time, he was distributing Islamic material to foreign tourists around the Old City.

Abu Hassan realized there was almost no missionary Muslim literature in Hebrew, so he and a few associates put together a Hebrew booklet. Since then, he said, they have distributed several thousand copies, he said.

Titled “The Path to Happiness,“ the booklet invites the reader to ”think, and take advantage of this invaluable opportunity in which we are trying to take your hand and lead you to the eternal light.”

Muslims Cross Volatile Middle Eastern Boundaries to Evangelize Jews

The missionaries are wary of revealing personal details, fearing harassment. Somebody has already hacked Abu Hassan’s cell phone, changing his voice mail message to a string of Hebrew curses against him and Muhammad, the Muslim prophet.

Most of those Abu Hassan engages ignore him, he said. Many are derisive, some verbally abusive. At one point Israeli intelligence agents questioned him about his funding, he said. He told them it came from donations in mosques.

“People curse me. But I do my job, and this is my job as a Muslim. I must explain gently, and in a nice way, about Allah,” he said.

He dodged questions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying only that historically the “best times” for Jews came under Islamic rule and suggesting peace would come if Jews accepted Islam.

Abu Hassan and his companions are informally linked to a small, three-year-old organization known as the Mercy Committee for New Muslims, founded by Emad Younis, a charismatic, blue-eyed preacher from the north Israel town of Ara.

Younis said the committee is not primarily aimed at winning converts. It helps those who do convert adapt to life as Muslims and seeks to explain a moderate version of Islam to non-Muslims, particularly Israeli Jews, by distributing promotional material.

The number of converts remains tiny.

Israel’s Justice Ministry, which registers converts, could not say how many Jews become Muslims. It said 400 and 500 of Israel’s nearly 8 million people change their faith every year – many of them Christians joining different Christian sects. Reiter, the professor, said his research suggested about 20 converts a year to Islam, almost all women marrying Muslim men.

Younis of the Mercy Committee said most new converts were indeed women married to Muslims, and the majority were originally from the former Soviet Union, part of the 1990s wave of Eastern European immigration to Israel. The newcomers are less susceptible to taboos against intermarriage and conversion.

At a recent gathering for new Muslims, 55 converts came with their families – five of them native-born Israeli Jews, all of them women, Younis said.

One woman, a 20-year-old, converted in June to marry her Muslim husband.

“The Muslims greeted me with love I never got from my parents, and the women here say, ‘You’re one of us now,’” she said, giving only her new Arabic first name, Yasmin.

Yasmin lives in the Arab town of Taibeh in central Israel, a short drive from the traditional Jewish home in which she grew up. But she can’t go back since her family, too, has disowned her.

“I have nothing now but my husband and Islam,” she said.

” hoping, improbably, that some will be willing to renounce their religion for a new one.”

I have people coming to my door (at least once a week) saying the same thing. And when I profess devotion to my Gods, the smile deminishes and the proslytizing increases. I suppose the huge American flag in my front yard (the only one on my block), isn’t enough to show them what we have in common.

see— hadith, bukhari, book 87, number 111, In 610 AD Islam started with Muhammed in the cave (Hira) where a angel of satan came upon him, physically assaulted him caused terror and extreem fear and suicidal attempts. The primary problem is twofold, first there are a number of self-despising Jews out there and the second is that there are a number of Jews that believe that the Israel that the Jews have now is not the one that God has promised to give back to them and some of them actively work to destroy this “false” Israel. It’s just like when Jesus came to earth and a number of Jews hated him for two reasons. The first is that He would take away their power that they have over the Jewish people (the Sadducees and the Pharisees), the second group hated him because He came to promote peace and love for yourself and your neighbors instead of being born with a sword in each hand and upon His Birth, He didn’t go out with those swords and decapitate every non-Jew in the world. Yes, even the Jews had some psycho’s just like every other race out there.

I can see someone going there to talk to BOTH Jew and Muslim about Christianity. The Law of Moses was fulfilled and therefore no longer a binding system and Islam was simply made up from bits and pieces of Jewish and Christian culture/history. It would be nice to see both come to Christ.

KNOWLEDGE, What it boils down to is imposing ones God(s), religion, ideology onto someone else.
With so many who claim to be Muslim are calling for the deaths of those who are not, you’ll hear plenty of generalistic comments about your religion. You may be a peacful person, but the totalitarianists who are respresenting your religion to the rest of the world continue to kill in the name of your God and religion, and that will not sit well with those of us who wish to enjoy our free will and individual freedoms.

MOTONUTT- “Why would I want to study a religion that is founded by satan. If I wanted to do that I would just become a satanist.” No, it wasn’t. It is interesting although, how hasatan (meaning an antaganizer which was not a particular being) was the basis (supposedly) of the “satan” in both Christian and Muslim faiths. Both religions who have a history of forcible conversions, by the way. I do contribute that to a totalitarian infiltration of said religions, instead of the message their Gods are trying to convey to their followers.

I am a Christian, Jew loving, American man. This is the first time I am finding myself writing ANYTHING positive about Muslims in Israel. If they are PEACEFULLY talking to Jews giving them their “gospel story” then I say good luck to them as I pray they will not have success.
I know that is contradictory however believe it or not this does my heart good to hear of Muslims NOT trying to convert by the sword.
So I say good luck hope all Muslims take that attitude the world will be a better safer place. I also pray that the Jews will not convert because Islam is satanic and leads to death and death ONLY!
Evangelism should be by any religion as simple as going to some one and say…“you want to look at my religion”… and when the answer is no you say “thank you for your time” and then you MOVE ON!!!
It is wishful and foolish to think this will catch on in the Muslim world. But these people are bold to think after generations of calls for extermination the Jews will now go running to Mohamed lol.

The immaturity of the human race as a whole can be witnessed in it’s continued need/belief in invisible friends of ALL faiths. For any one person, or religion to say “This is the only way. This is the true god.” seems to me to be the highest form of arrogance.
And “IF” a god does indeed exist, as humans how can we possibly even think that we have the capacity to understand/know who he/she is, what they want, what they think, or even if they care. Now don’t tell me this book or that one says so. I can go smoke, drink, or fast myself into an altered state and come up with a book just as interesting, does that mean it’s given to me by god?

I’m no fan of people proselytizing – if I inquire about your religion, great, but the act of insulting people due to the fact that they have faith in something in the first place is just a sad statement about you.

      Romans Chapter 1
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

It is the pride and arrogance of the human race that has driven it away from God in the first place. God has written the Law into the hearts of man; deep down inside every human being knows inherrently that stealing is wrong because is is wrong for another to take his own things, to give one example. Some people would call this “common sense”. Denying God or questioning His existence doesn’t eliminate Him from participating in the “human equation”; it does bar the individual who does so because God is a ‘gentleman’ and allows the denyer to of his own accord drive his life into the ditch.

MIVOYSES – Good post. It’s difficult to interpret the full intent of a Gods message, I agree. All that we can do as individuals is to do our best to do so, without allowing our natural inclination toward controlling our fellow human beings. Some want to share their peace and enlightenment so badly, that this natural aggressiveness masks their intent to share their respective diety’s message. Which comes across as proslytisation. On the other hand, we have those who use religion (or a diety) for their inherent drive to limit ones free will and individuality. Unfortunately, the latter is previlent within the world’s two largest religions.

      Think about this….
First how did we get here….“big bang”? Hahahaha I don’t have enough faith for that.
Second is there a God…If so who Is He…what does He want…and how do I relate to Him?
Third and last…Is there a Heaven to gain and a Hell to shun?
The question of Eternity is the single most important question facing mankind. You are free by design to choose God or choose the devil. That is the definition of LOVE! CHOICE.
If my wife and children do not have a choice but to love me then there is no love there … THEY HAVE NO CHOICE! But she wakes up each day as do I and decide to love.
The God of the Bible does not now nor has He ever “sent” ANY ONE to Hell. If you CHOOSE to follow Yeshua (Jesus) then you will naturally go were He goes… Heaven… If you follow the devil then you will likewise go were he goes….hell.
There is no middle. By not choosing Christ you are in fact choosing the devil.
The good news is you have a choice. I am free in ways I never thought I could be because of Christ Jesus. You can be mad at God that is your right. But I encourage you to rethink the reasons why you are mad at Him and talk to Him about it. You will find that He has NEVER been your problem But has always been your solution.
You are LOVED. Jesus proved it by his death and sealed it by not staying dead.
One way or another you will see Him and either be glad of your choice or …..not… it is all up to you.

Irregardless of how you view Islam (for the record, I see it as vile), according to the info in the article these Islamists were not doing anything illegal or inflamatory. They were not inciting violence, they were approaching others in a polite manner, they were not forcing themselves upon others etc. Technically no different than members of other religions who hand out their literature, ask if they can share their beliefs etc.

Like it or not, as long as they follow the law, they have the right to be there and they have the right to offer information about their religion to willing listeners.

If we ever want to convince Muslims that are on the fence to reject violent Jihad, we really ought to support moderate Muslims trying to show them a way to fulfill their religious duties (as wrong as they may be) peacefully. I understand you might not like proselytizing, but I don‘t see how this guy’s doing anything different from the way Christ’s apostles spread Christianity. They are there to provoke the Jews, nothing more. Then, if and when something happens, it’s time to play blame the victim.( Kinda sounds like the R‘s and D’s over here, doesn’t it? You can get away with so much more with a D after your name.) Islam is a boil on the butt of humanity that needs to be lanced.

This is BS What do they say to convert people to the moon god of Arabia? They have been at war with the followers of The God of Abraham since the time of Moses the only differences are that Muhammad plagerized some of the scripture from the bible and then claimrd “Paradise” is a place of wine women and song.
Jesus is the one and only way to God and salvation

Amusing that ishlamic ‘johnny come late-lies’ (700 AD?) would try to convince the Jews that their 5000 year relationship with Yahweh is a mistake.

The simple fact is that they wouldn’t. Have you ever heard of a Jewish missionary in Africa or South America? YOU have to ask and even then, it‘s not an ’automatic’ process even after you ask for conversion. Oh, and they don;t cut off your head if you should convert to something else.

“Evangelize” is a religious term which doesn’t apply to the cult of murder, mayhem, abuse and pedophilia known as islam. They are not attempting to evangelize but rather dupe people into converting from a religion of peace into a cult of evil. Muslims are deserving of neither our respect nor our tolerance as they practice their cult.

Looks like Southern border of USA isn’t only place that needs to build a very high, secure fence.

Too bad we didn’t take the muslimes out at every opportunity throughout history. Now, see what our gentleness has cost us?

    Pray.

Well it seems to me that he is worshiping the wrong god. Jewish God is way older than Islam’s god. So I would go with the older because He is more experienced.

The wrong god? Really? And is there a “right” god?
While I’ll allow that we all have (or should have) the right to worship as we choose, I question it’s need. Do you “need” a god to tell you how to live properly? Isn’t it common sense to be honest, truthful, respectful, sincere and helpful to others? Why is the threat of punishment or reward after you die necessary to make you act properly?

      MIV

Isn’t it common sense to be honest, truthful, respectful, sincere and helpful to others?

All these attributes are found within the lessons of Christ. Before Christ these lessons were not taught. The 10 commandments is whats used as our moral compass. Our founders understood this. Freedoms and liberties came from Christian precepts not from a pagan or atheist. It was the survival of the fittest before Noah and up to Christ. . You need to read back into History when infanticide was all the rage. Or leaving the elderly in the woods to die. Human life was pretty cheap back then.

Call me when they stop suicide bombings, decapitation, hatred to other religions, degradation to woman, respect for human life… Then, and only then, will I even consider their religion as a valid religion.
