‘Mutual Respect’: Obama Welcomes China’s Incoming Communist President

President Obama held a press conference today welcoming the soon-to-be new leader of China’s Communist Party, Xi Jinping, to the White House. Despite signs of tension between the U.S. and China, the President apparently greeted Jinping with a great deal of warmth. The Los Angeles Times explains:
In a joint appearance before their meeting, Obama told reporters that the U.S. relationship with China is based on “mutual interest and mutual respect,” and that such a relationship is in the interests of the rest of the world, too.
The United States welcomes China’s “peaceful rise,” Obama said, which he said has the power to “help to bring stability and prosperity to the world.”
Xi said that he and Vice President Joe Biden had reached a “new consensus” during their talks, though he didn’t say what that was, and that his goal is to “move forward the U.S.-China relationship.”
CBS News has video of the president’s remarks:
Once they’ve dispensed with the pleasantries, however, what will this sort of chumminess mean in practical terms? Some might argue that President Obama’s welcome is a little too warm, and possibly even motivated by admiration for a kindred spirit — especially given passages like this from a BBC profile of the incoming Chinese President:
He has convinced businessmen he is their champion, while overseeing a system where the state controls huge chunks of the economy. [...]
He is a man who can appeal to almost everyone, but who seems to have alienated almost no-one in his rise through the ranks. He appears confident and open while giving away little.
He is a consensus candidate, a compromise who the factions in the communist hierarchy can unite behind – a figure China’s disparate people, from its wealthy to its poor, its party members to its private businessmen, can all accept.
Sound familiar?

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 7:15pmJust sayin’…
In 2008, Ron Paul was the only member of the House of Representatives to vote against a resolution calling on Beijing to end its crackdown in Tibet, pursue a substantive dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, release political prisoners, and allow human rights monitors into Tibet.
On other occasions Paul was the only member of the House of Representatives to…
Vote against condemning China’s system of forced labor in prison camps, the notorious Laogai system, and call for enforcement of U.S. laws that prohibit the importation of products made in the Laogai; and
Vote against a resolution congratulating Liu Xiaobo, for winning the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize and call for Liu’s release from prison.
Yet Paul’s isolationist position does not mean he thinks China should also mind its own business. He has voted against urging the People’s Republic of China to end its political, economic, and military support for the repressive governments of Sudan and Burma.
I am in the opinion America should give Ron Paul a very loud and resounding NO… again.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 7:50pmTROLLTRAINER. My distaste for Ron Paul is almost as bad as my distaste for Obama. When all is said and done, then my screen name becomes TIME_2_END_THE_OBAMA_PRESIDENCY_IN_12 and I carry on from there on a Liberal site I like to frequent for fun where they’re as thick as thieves like the Paul groupies here.
But because we have Ron Paul neo-lib quasi-cons here here bashing Republican Conservatives… well then, as far as I’m concerned… I’m not wasting my time at all. I don’t expect to change minds or influence anyone one way or the other… but information is always a good thing and there’s a long history on Ron Paul. Ron Paul supporters have their information output… and I have mine.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 8:04pmgee i wonder why Ron Paul voted to not intervene in other nations private affairs? maybe because he practices what he preaches?
constitutionally, we have NO AUTHORITY to “police” the world… we have no right to send “human rights” into China and police them… are you kidding me? what would America do if China did that to us? you seriously have to be joking? it would be an instant war… LOL…. that is not how you change minds… that is not how you “enlighten” people… not with bullets, sanctions, or any other initiation of force.
so did Beijing end its crackdown in Tibet and they are now free?
when Tibet wants to be free, it WILL be free. that is how it works. you can’t dictate morality. freedom is a moral value. owning yourself, owning your property, being responsible for them, standing up for them, etc…
This is a COLD HARD FACT:
* If you choose to bend over and give up, you do not care about your freedom in the first place.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 8:59pmHistory is full of lessons KIBS. One lesson, as I think Paul suggests, is that foreign intervention is fraught with risks and can have unintended consequences for the intervening country. But another lesson of history is that there are unintended consequences and risks to isolation.
American presidents and the American people have rejected the siren song of isolation since World War II because of, well, World War II. A consensus emerged after the war that the world could do more harm to America if America remained uninvolved and uninterested, that America could do more good in the world as a leader than as a passive observer, and that engagement in the world benefited America.
To be sure KIBS, there have been mistakes and missteps, costs and consequences, to American engagements in the world, but by and large angagement has served American interests. It’s worth noting here that the notion that we lived in blissful, peaceful isolation before the 20th century… implicit in Paul’s foreign policy vision… does not jibe with American history. Jefferson, after all (’cause I know you’ll listen to him and not me), raised a fleet and sent it halfway around the world to wage war on America’s enemies in the first decade of the 1800s. There were more than 100 instances of U.S. military intervention overseas before the 20th century. Between 1800 and 1934, U.S Marines staged 180 landings abroad.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 8:19pmChina owns us.
How can we pay our debt when, if we print a new dollar to pay it, it costs us .40$ to the federal reserve for interest?
Now if i traded (not income) 1 hour of my time\skill\labor for 1$, i would get .60$ federal reserve currency and .40$ federal reserve debt….
plus we get taxed on that trade (by an unratified 16th amendment which is supposed to be an indirect tax not a direct tax via supreme court rulings)…
Report Post »you lose time… you dont get any “income”.. income suggests that you gained money without a trade for it. such as, investment income. trading your time is not income, it’s an equal trade which is negotiated by you and the person trading you.
