‘My Name Is…’: Viral Videos of the Latest Talent Show to Sweep…Chile

The fall TV season is less than a week old and programming executives at every major network are already making decisions on which of the new shows will stay and which will go.  I have a suggestion for an immediate mid-season replacement program for any number of the failed shows – we need an American version of the TV show “Mi Nombre Es” from Chile.

Yes, it is another singing competition, but a show unlike any you have seen before. Wannabe stars step on an empty stage and announce their name, only it is not their real name, they are assuming the name of the person they sound like. (Or believe that they sound like.)

Check out Javier Diaz as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder performing “Yellow Ledbetter:”

In case you are not familiar with the original version, compare:

(And no, nobody really knows what the lyrics are to this song.)

In case you are not convinced yet, here are a few other gems from “Mi Nombre Es.”

Mi Nombre Es Amy Winehouse (she starts singing about a minute into it, but you have to give her points for bringing props — a drink and a cigarette:

All music formats appear to be covered on the show, as long as it was a hit. Check out Ivan as AC/DC’s Brian Johnson:

And a semi-finalist in the competition, a woman (?) named Solange performing “Poker Face” as Lady Gaga:

If you think that people will not approve of a sound-a-like performer, consider that the 80s band Journey is currently on tour and playing sold out shows  with a new lead singer they found on YouTube. Meet Arnel Pineda singing the smash “Separate Ways:”

To all of the TV execs reading this, get this guaranteed hit show on the air and thank me with a spot as a highly paid guest judge when you do the special “All Elvis Presley” edition of “My Name Is…”

I’m not familiar enough with Amy Whinehouse or lady Gaga to pass judgement on thier skill, but the Steve Perry dude is perfect ( i don‘t like the sound of Journey beyond the 70’s but they got popular during my era so i know them well ), the Pearl Jam guy is fantastic but mumbling is not horribly hard to emulate. The AC/DC guy is real good, his voice is half an octave higher than Brian Johnsons but its very good !

This is old news. The show was featured in a 2008 Chilean movie “Tony Manero” Or … the show was inspired by that movie.

“HELLO! My name is Indigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

I don’t care what anyone says, NOBODY knows the words to Yellow Ledbetter besides Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. Post whatever you want, listen and follow along, it’s not right. Sorry. Great song though.

They are spot on with their impersonations, but wake me up when somebody impersonates an artist that actually sings rather than mumbling unintelligible nonsense or screaming at the top of their lungs.

I dont like a lot of modern artists today…that being said, Pearl Jam is considered by many to be the greatest rock band of all time.

Ever hear of “comic relief?” Articles like this give a chance to take a step back from the hard news and get some perspective. Put another way, if you don’t care for the article, skip it. (Or, would you rather others make all the decisions about what you see and read?) On another level, I believe that no information, as long as it’s true, is “bad.” For example, I would rather know what lefties are thinking, their attitudes and mindset, than to have it foisted on me and mine by perhaps voting for someone who has not been properly vetted. That way lies ruin, as is evident in the rest of the articles here, and in our daily lives. There’s a time to grumble, and a time to act. But there’s always time to step back and just appreciate the adventure of life.

Saw Alan Parsons at Club Nokia in LA just before he passed away. I was impressed with the opening act of “The Pink Floyd Experience”. They were vocally spot on to include the back up vocals for “The Great Gig in the Sky” from Dark Side of the Moon. If you get a chance to see them, they are well worth it. Check out their reviews and you will find the vast majority agree. It truly was a Pink Floyd experience when I closed my eyes, there was no difference.

These people are so talented, it’s incredible. The artists they‘re impersonating don’t even usually sound this good live. That Pineda guy impersonating Journey was absolutely flawless. That is not easy to do.

My G-d. That Journey video gave me chills. I saw them 30 years ago in Boston and it was THE greatest concert I’ve ever been to….and I’ve seen all the biggest acts in concert….ZZ Top, ELP, EWF, Boston, Tull, KISS, Pink Floyd, Led Zep…you name it.
That new kid Arnel Pineda blows the doors off of anything Steve Perry ever did. I want to go see them again but they aren’t coming East Coast anytime soon. Too bad.

“(And no, nobody really knows what the lyrics are to this song.)”
    Huh? The lyrics are:

Unsealed, On the porch a letter sat,
And she said, I wanna leave here again.
Once I saw her, on a beach of weathered sand,
And on the sand, I wanna leave here again.
And they called, and I said that I know what I said,
    And I called out again.
And the reason, ought to leave her calm, I know,
I said, I dont know whether I’m the boxer or the bag.

Eddie Vedder butchers them but then…it’s his song.
