Mystery Illness Affecting NY Students Could Be From 1970 Train Crash…Says Erin Brockovich

Earlier this month, The Blaze reported on a mysterious illness that is affecting 12 girls from Leroy Central School District in New York. The girls had strange, sudden symptoms of ticks, tremors and verbal outbursts, which doctors have since claimed to have diagnosed but are not releasing the actual cause of the illness to the public due to patient confidentiality.

Erin Brockovich Ties Mysterious Illness of LeRoy High School Students to Chemical Spill

Thera Sanchez has to drop out of school due to the mysterious symptoms she began exhibiting. She and another student were recently on the Today show (see the video at the end of this post).

Now, activist Erin Brockovich has stepped in to investigate. USA Today reports that Brockovich, who helped expose toxic chemical dumping in California and gained popularity when Julia Roberts portrayed her in a 2000 film, was approached by some parents of the students — now 15 students including one boy report symptoms — to look into the case.

USA Today has more on what Brockovich found:

[...] she has spent the past week studying federal and state reports of a 1970 train derailment that spilled cyanide and an industrial solvent called trichloroethene within 3 miles of the high school attended by the 12 girls who started reporting neurological symptoms last fall. Three other teens, including one boy, are reportedly experiencing similar symptoms.

[...]

“We don’t have all the answers, but we are suspicious,” Brockovich says. “They have not ruled everything out yet. The community asked us to help and this is what we do.”

USA Today reports that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency produced a report in 1999 that stated one ton of cyanide crystals and 35,000 gallons of trichloroethene were associated with the train’s derailment. The cyanide was reportedly cleaned up but the trichlorethene soaked into the ground.

In a statement earlier this month, health officials said they have ruled out environmental factors, infections, the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, illegal drugs and vaccines. Some doctors have come forward saying they think it could be conversion disorder, a neurological problem brought on by stress, but New York officials have said the illness is not just in the students’ heads.

The National Institute of Health, which has been conducting studies on conversion disorder, is interested in providing a second opinion on the students. Watch this report for more on NIH’s involvement:

Last week, the some of the girls were featured on the Today show. Watch that clip with the students exhibiting some of their symptoms:

The solvent TCE should be checked for in all sources of water in that town. TCE is very persistent in groundwater and its breakdown daughter products are also quite harmful to the body. I have known TCE to be in groundwater at harmful levels for many decades so the 1970 spill is quite possible. Those who know nothing about hydrogeology and chemical toxicity should likely avoid giving an opinion on the subject otherwise the risk of looking and sounding foolish is upon you.

Erin Brockovich doesn‘t understand why there’s such a thing as due process.

Some of her work may turn out to be beneficial, but let’s be careful with her.

Consider that Hinkley, about which the movie with her name on it refers, did not show a remarkable rate of cancer given what the California Cancer Registry expected, and that the rates were lower than what was expected.

I remember back in the day around 1973 at the FM radio station where I worked, occasionally we (engineering) would go down to the the local Dry Cleaners where we would buy another pint of 1-1-1 trichloroethane solvent which we then used to clean the rubber capstan drive rollers and capstans on the cart machines and reel to reel tape drives, idler wheels and turntable rims, and also the electrical contacts on the Daven attenuators and line keys, turntable starts, etc etc… We would just dump some on a rag right out of the bottle and go to work without gloves on or anything like that. Nobody ever started acting whacky from using that stuff constantly. Maybe we were just young and lucky or something.

Granny, I am in agreement about the vaccines, but we will never know if they were the cause. It will be covered up. There is too much money to be gained by the Pharmaceutical companies, as this vaccine is becoming mandatory in some states. Having followed Dr. Mayor Eisenstein for sometime, a proponent of not vaccinating children at all, I lean towards his point of view. There is too much at stake and we aren’t always told the truth by the government or big corporations. I know that my brother-in-law an organic chemistry PhD, won‘t allow his teenage daughter to get the vaccine and won’t allow his kids to get a flu vaccine either, and he is one of the most level headed non-alarmist guys I know.

I went on a fishing trip there, it was my first time to visit one of our Great Lakes ( and last )
I caught a King Chinook Salmon that weighed 34 lbs. Wow the ting was almost 4 feet long and i was so proud until a local fishermen told me to smell the gills, Gills are something like the lungs of the fish, they filter the water. so i took a whiff ….. UGH .. the smell was NASTY. it was like smelling something that came out of a Chemical plant. and i later found out that there was a fish advisory to not eat the fish from that lake.being an outdoors men I can’t express the sadness i felt when learning this. I returned home and went back up to the Mountains, visited my favorite Beaver pond and camped for a week ……………………………………………………………………..

It’s due to vacccinations or flu shots. Though the CDC will never in a million years admit it as they have an agenda to promote these vaccines. They of course know very will they can cause many illnesses but for the people are expendable if they belive vaccines work for the majority of people. of course they don’t even do that but they are committed ideologically to believe they do. facing up to the harm they actually do would be admitting that they have been responsible for the illnesses of millions of people.[including autism and aids which was introduced into the human populations via vaccines which contained monkey syrumand monkeys had the hiv virus].

But what else besides a “don’t panic” message would we be able to expect from the NY Department of Health?

If you do some research, you might find out about the crops grown at that time and fungus/bacteria on said crops.

Ergo ergotism? Natural LSD? I vote mass hysteria, as this has happened many times since the witch trials. Check Wikipedia, then do your own research.

Phoenixfire, yes we can test for Pandas, it is call ASO to check for previous strep infections. You can run a titer on many different infectious bacteria. These are very standard test. Many people go on carrying strep or mycoplasma with absolutely no symptoms. More immune tests are being developed to check these subsets of kids for certain antibodies and responses. I am glad you have said something about this.

Can’t dispute that you may be right.I’m surprised by the symptoms though,Normally something like that would be in septcemic range to cause those symptoms.Wonder if any excavation was occuring in the area the girls may have visited?Lots of soil born pathogens aren’t transmissable person to person.they normally show ear sinus and lung problems first though.

I’d agree especially since they all know each other. But anything’s possible I suppose. Even Jimmy O. winning – God help us! HOPE (AND VOTE) FOR CHANGE! OMG

So something from the 70′s is causing this, and not maybe, something that has been introduced in the last 20 years, like cell phones, video games, caffine drinks. No, that couldn’t cause it…I know, I bet a stray radio signal of Disco Duck was still floating through the air, they accidently heard it on their I-Pods, and wham, coma.

Turn off the TV when Obama comes on, all those symptoms disappear when I do.

Anyone want to bet that there was more than cyanide and the other stuff on that train? Say like some form of chem-war stuff that got into the area and is now making its presence felt?

Or could it be some test the Feds are conducting on unwilling, unknown victims; the silence of the doctors has to be coming from the Feds.

Ridiculous. These girls weren’t alive when the spill occurred. So you’re suggesting that some residual contamination exits, and that it only affects these 12 girls? Really?

I don’t think it is the train, otherwise they would have other students over the years have the same symptoms. Perhaps they took something that is now out of their system and undetectable, but left neurological damage and afraid to admit it. She admits she was a straight “A” student and a cheer leader; the stress of that alone can be enough to take something to keep alert. They need to look at their study habits.

It may also be the other students are having sympathy symptoms. It has been known to happen. I’ve seen husbands get morning sickness when their wives were pregnant.

Now I am 60, so my ticks and shaking are more age related, but on occasion I have minor muscle spasms and sometimes my arm will jerk slightly all involuntary, so as far as them faking I don’t think this is the case.

I think Erin Brochovich is on a wild goose chase here and trying to attribute something that happened over 40 years ago. If this was the case others in the town would be experiencing the symptoms.

if there were, people would have had symptoms long before now, and lots more people would be affected. If these ailments were caused by that train wreck 40 years ago, there would be more people with complaints.
