Mystery Missile Launched Near Calif. Has Military Speechless

A missile launch caught by a San Diego news station has military officials claiming they know nothing about it:
From KFMB-TV:
A Navy spokesperson tells News 8, this wasn’t its missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in that part of the region.
On Friday, November 5, Vandenberg Air Force Base launched a Delta II rocket, carrying the Thales Alenia Space-Italia COSMO SkyMed satellite, but a sergeant at the base tells News 8, there have been no launches since then.
News 8 showed the video to Robert Ellsworth, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and a former Deputy Secretary of Defense.
He said it didn’t appear to be a Tomahawk missile and said it would be safest to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
Based on pure speculation, however, Ambassador Ellsworth said, with President Obama in Asia, perhaps this could have been a show of our military muscle.
“It could be a test firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine [...] to demonstrate mainly to Asia, that we can do that,” he said, stressing that it was just a theory.
Gawker’s sarcastic comment sums it up: “Sleep well, America.”
UPDATE:
The national CBS website has more form Ellsworth.
“It’s spectacular… It takes people’s breath away,” said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, “a big missile”.
Ellsworth said test fires in the past from submarines were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America’s power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn’t believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.
UPDATE II:
MSNBC reports:
Senior Pentagon and Navy officials told NBC News that they did not know who launched the missile.
A senior official told NBC News it was “possible” that the incident was an accidental launch by the military. However, the Navy, Air Force and Missile Defense Agency said they had no information to indicate they were involved, NBC News reported.
Military officials told said that a planned military exercise would not have been held that close to Los Angeles.
Officials were also examining the possibility it was a “commercial launch of some kind” or that amateurs had built a device capable of creating such a plume, NBC News reported.
This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

By the time it was a blip on radar it was already 3/4 of the way through its flight. By the time an airplane on the ground, even ground directly next to the rocket launch site, was airborn the missile would have already landed back on earth.

Now, if our enemies can have this information, don’t you think we would want them to be distracted? Jeeeeze. When they say we don‘t have this technology or we’re still testing it, we already have it. How can you still trust what the govt/military tells you after all that’s been happening to our freedom? We have “ufo” technology. Come on now, please see through the lies already. I was in the military and employed in the capacity of a very sensitive position and can speak with some amount on intelligence about what the military does. What the military does and knows is rarely as “omg, they’re so far ahead of us dopey civilians” as most people believe. Frankly put, the military *makes* nothing. They contract out all of their equipment needs to private firms (think Boeing, or Chrysler and such). If we had laser bang shoot’em down satellites already launched, we’d already know about it. The very purpose of such a system is deterrence, letting the enemy, the very world even, know that we could take out their first strike, and be poised to launch a counter-strike that would take them out. Think MAD. Ergo, you’d *want* those systems known about even as you were putting them up. The things we don’t know about which are hush hush (and legitimate) are generally at the level of espionage tactics and techniques, or specific troop/logistics deployments, or specific intelligence (hence, classification). Frankly put, any satellite system capable of being able to effectively take down random missiles would have to be a large web of individual satellites, and you can’t just slip those into space unnoticed by other nations or even the press.
Now if you can show me where they’ve announced such a web of satellites being deployed, I’ll concede the argument. You might be right, and maybe I’m just not as up on the news as I should be.

Report Post »subsailorman7
Posted on November 9, 2010 at 4:59pm@jefferson. While I agree with you on some of your last points about deterrance, I will tell you that there is more that we, even most in the military do not know about. I am sure you heard the phrase, need to know basis. While I am quite sure that we do not have a laser in space to shoot down missiles, we do have the capability to shoot them down in other ways. Especially if there is only one. When there are more, obviously, that is more difficult. And, by the way, the payload on a missile like this is very classified. The missile is not.. Thanks to Clinton, China has that info as far as the guidance systems. While “MASTERPLAN” is also right in part that the military will not tell us everything, I do know for fact that on a Submarine Launch ICBM, in a test fire situation, before they are launched, there are many places that are notified. The FAA is notified, NORAD, other countries are notified so they do not mistake it as an attack on them and return fire. North Korea is one of the most secretive countries on the planet, and yet they tell the world so that there are no mistakes in intentions. Also, switching directions, we don’t usually do SLICBM test fires that close to the coast, not to say it couldn’t happen.

That‘s what I’m hoping for. A bunch of rich university kids / irresponsible enthusiasts decided it would be fun to launch a rocket off the coast, freaking everyone out. Scale isn’t an issue. It’s just a matter of more propellant and money. It’s not even that expensive to do, really. A cheap gyro and some big motors, or even homemade fuel.
If that’s the case, they had better hope they don’t get caught. That’s some relatively busy airspace, and they are well beyond the acceptable altitude and distance for unannounced launch… obviously. That thing is impressive.
I don’t know why the news is mentioning Tomahawks… they don’t look like that. It looks more like a Trident or something similar, which is a scary thought.

Korea don’t have the guidance systems or the range to hit us … but what if that’s not the strategy? Remember the terrorists learning to fly planes but not to land them? All they have to do is get it to go up to a certain altitude and detonate, and this would arguably be more effective than wiping out a city — especially if they could coordinate an attack from each coast and from the Gulf.

Firstly, It was almost certinely ours, I say that because of two factors, A. nothing went “kaboom” as a result of this missle coming down, and B. For a foreign power to get a “boat” within 35 miles of our coast undetected is about the same as our being able to safely land on the Sun in a rubber dingey. That being said their are so many questions, first off the vidio shows a standard breach and climb pattern in the contrail of a SLBM (submarine launched ballistic missle), secoundly the missle appeared to be going max uprange, perhaps to the Aleutian testing area in ALaska.
Report Post »An “event” is coming, a unknown missle strike on our territory would suffice I should think. One big problem with that senerio is the “unknown’ part of the equation. If they try that routine you should know thats its a HUGE lie from the door. I can say that with certintity because our passive survailence system is extreemly capable, and all ships and submarines leave detectable signatures whenever they transit the waters of the world. These “signatures” easily point to the Nation of origion as well as the exact class of the combatant ship as well. Additionally these “signatures” are oft times recorded and tracked from the moment the submarine leaves port untill its return. Even an old hand (26 years removed) like me could return to data recorded today and decifer and report to the nature, speed, course, class, and country of origion of a submarine, because nations still power boats in the same manner as they did back in the eighties when I was on active duty.
In an unrelated news article, a cruise ship with 4500 people on board is adrift off of mexico. They plan to dock her in mexico and bus everyone back to America, NOW this smacks of a “set up”, bussing 4500 Americans on big busses through “murder central AMerica”, hmm do I smell “event”?

Ya….right. Hey! Want to buy some great land in central florida? Right on the water!

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 1:04pmDoes anyone actually believe the military does not know what this was? That idea is ridiculous. They may not say they know but if they truly were ignorant, you would see all kinds of hell raised.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 1:16pmPlease move on, nothing to see here folks, Just Obama’s civilian Army practicing missile launching so they can be as equally trained and equiped as our military. I’m sure Gibbs will be completely open and honest and give all details upon his and Obamas return from India.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 1:39pmBetterDays…your argument is sound…one thing…During the Clinton administration there was a transfer of American technology to china…so can they mimic one of our missiles and as far as trajectories are concerned they could figure out what would pass as a internal firing…second, considering what has happened in the past at Los Alamos National Lab and considering that yobama and company are communists in control, would lead me to believe that someone could of compromised our surveillance system…Since FDR’s days in Washington our national security has been compromised many times…keep in mind that many believe that Alger Hiss was not a spy…many people state (in news accounts, in books and in conversations) that Senator Joe McCarthy conducted his “Witch Hunt” in The House Committee on Un-American Activities (HCUA)…which is impossible…thus nothing would surprise me…
Report Post »Also, considering that the left would do anything to destroy America to achieve world government…I do not trust obama and most elected officials especially democrats…So until we know, expect the worst and hope for the best…

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 1:57pmAre you kidding me? The US military knows where this came from, whether it was from us or someone else. We have plenty of intel to know who is 35 miles off the coast of LA. They’re playing this one down.
And I was thinking the same thing as the 3rd or 4th post…..when in the world was it ever in doubt that we “can launch”. I mean… WHAT? How mundane a response is that? That’s like saying my car has the capability of reaching speeds of 70 MPH on the highway.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 3:49pmNot to worry, it was just Pelosi, Boxer, and Reid celebrating their re-election. They used their influence with Spooky Dude to use his influence with Maurice Strong to use his influence with Deng Xiao Ping to allow the Chinese to test fire one of their submarine based ICBM’s. Clownitano has confirmed that our borders are safer than ever. Nothing to see or learn here, just go back to sleep America.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 4:38pmI remember when we were told that our satellites could read a license plate from 100 miles up. Then they got rid of our human spys. Then we had a war and guess what….our military was not able to get the intelligence that they needed. Now they have told us they have the most sophisticated missile defense system ever and there is an unknown missile reported. So all our military can say is what the f***. I hope this is not what it seems to be.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 5:23pmThe US knows of every allied launch. If the US military is publicly stating they do not know who launched it then it is either a Russian or Chinese SLBM to show us they can get in close to the US mainland and launch – if this is the case then supply your bunkers cuz things are getting bad.
just my two cents – by the way I have 20+ years as a DSP missile warning operator.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 5:26pm@BETTERDAYS: First of all, great response, and exactly right. I served on USS MICHIGAN SSBN 727, (back when it was still a boomer boat). With some of the things that have happened in the last 2 years, I can see how it will give someone thought. It would, however, be pretty much impossible for some other country to get that close to our coast without us knowing it. Not only do we have our passive sonar system down there, but we also have our own subs, which I am quite confident that ours are better than theirs. Plus our surface navy which are more than capable.
And now that you mention it, the Mexico angle is quite interesting. Not only the possibility of them getting shot up, but how many illegals are they going to sneak in on them. Interesting.
By the way, did anybody hear that NPR president said that NPR listeners are smarter than we are? Again, interesting.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 5:36pm@JJCOOLAY: If we launch a submarine launch ballistic missile, we don’t necessarily do it to prove what we are capable of, although, it does remind people. We launch to test. We test our missiles, and our submarines. That is precisely why we have missile test fire targets.

This was probably a show of force, of capabilities. The Chinese have stated in the past, during times of anger with the US, that they could very easily put a sub 30 miles off LA and launching. They have been very angry and vocal as of late, with the US monetary policy actions. Remember, they hold over a trillion dollars worth of our debt. When the dollar iis intentionally deflated by putting 500% more money into circulation than we had in 2008, they lose 100′s on millions of dollars in currency value. I doubt we will ever know the truth, BUT, when Vandenberg test fires a missile it is announced. The ocean and airspace is cleared and no sail / no fly zones are set up. The FAA is notified. Civilian companies would need to file a flight plan but would not be given permission to do this so close to LA. Something is definitely afoot. Best guess??? China making a statement to nobama. As with the American citizen… He wont hear them now. Three more questions,,, 1.With an unknown missile launch, were any fighters launched as a just in case??? 2. What was the heading ??? 3. Where did it land??? Just a few more serious thoughts.
