N.C. Democratic Gov. Bemoans Same-Sex Marriage Ban: ‘We Look Like Mississippi’

Beverly Perdue

N.C. Gov. Beverly Perdue said her state's vote to ban gay marriage made them "look like Mississippi." (AP)

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said Friday her state’s vote to ban same-sex marriage made them “look like Mississippi.”

Voters in the state approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday defining marriage as between a man and a woman. The measure passed 61 percent to 39 percent.

“People around the country are watching us, and they’re really confused to have been such a progressive, forward-thinking, economically-driven state that invested in education and that stood up for the civil rights people including the civil rights marches back in the ‘50s and ’60s and ’70s,” Perdue told North Carolina’s WITN-TV. “Folks are saying what in the world is going on with North Carolina, we look like Mississippi.”

Perdue had come out against the amendment, saying it would “harm families” and “write discrimination into the constitution.”

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, fired back at Perdue later in the day by calling her remarks “petty” and “very disappointing.”

“To be able to use Mississippi in a disparaging way on a popular vote in her own state is, I think, something that’s certainly petty and something I think she will reflect on and hopefully apologize for those types of remarks,” Bryant told reporters after an unrelated news conference, according to the Associated Press.

“She’s a very nice lady,” he said. “It’s just disappointing to be able to use Mississippi as she is in some way to disparage a popular vote in her own state. It’s just very, very disappointing. And I think she‘ll regret that after she’s had some time to reflect on it.”

He added in a written statement: “Apparently, North Carolina‘s voters are much more in line with Mississippi’s traditional values on marriage than those of Gov. Perdue.”

Perdue, who has previously said she will not seek a second term, did not immediately respond to Bryant’s comments.

Smooth… tell the majority in your state that voted for you that they’re stupid and at the same time offend the entire population of another state… it doesn’t matter if she wants a second term or not, she’s DONE.

The DNC convention in N.C. has reached the boondoggle stage now.

They just refuse to acknowledge what the American people want; or in the case of gay marriage, DON’T want. 32 states have spoken, but we are all stupid….. and the courts will shove it down our throats against our will. We’ve been traveling toward this end for sometime now; it is frightening what we have allowed…and what we are fast becoming…

Internal polling has the Obamunist losing all 7 swing states and California. The only way we can unseat this Obamanation is to curtail his voter fraud division of the administration. That’s right, he has a team of Obamunist that are going to be registering all twenty of those Mexican kids that those illegal immigrint’s are claiming on their taxes illegally. That’s right dead people and 2 year olds living in Mexico will be voting for OBLAMER in November. If we let voter fraud run rampant, then America loses.

What she says about standing up for civil rights, harming the families is all a bunch of irrational nonsense of liberals, as usual – another crazed Elizabeth Warren & her ilk. Has nothing to do with “civil rights” and it harms families to have their immoral beliefs. But oh well….I note she isn’t running….that’s the good news folks! Wonder why? B/c she‘s noted the writing on the wall about how she couldn’t win now…..and the recent elections are great news. We all need to concentrate on killing liberalism here. Almost destroyed us as we speak. We’re at the edge of the cliff…..

We need to remember that if gay marriage is allowed in these states then it will open another door for individuals who will sue clergy if they ar unwilling to perform marriages for gay couples. The will sue using the anti-discrimination anti-hate laws currently being enacted in many states as justification for the lawsuit. It will be another sword in the heart of religious institutions in this country.

Her use of the words “progressive” and “forward thinking” say a lot. As for her berating her states’ voters, good thing she isn’t seeking a second term. You respect states rights or you step down. Fed up with race baiting/sexual preference baiting/progressive baiting of the left. They won’t be happy until they have destroyed our country completely making us into a full-on slave state of socialism. It amazes me every day to look at the Occupy goons in the street. They want people to bend to their demands—the primary one being their demand that the government FORCE other people to live under socialist/communist rule where they give up their property to be distributed as seen fit by the government. Talk about GREED on their part.

If you attend movies, buy videos, magazines or any other thing produced in Hollywood or the entertainment industry, you should give some very serious thought to the fact that the people in Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry support with millions and millions of dollars, the cause of the communist socialist politicians and their movement to destroy our nation.
If you attend any professional sports functions such as boxing, baseball, football, basketball or watch TV channels that air these sports events you are in need again of giving very serious thought to the fact that many, many of the players and coaches give millions to the communist socialist politicians who are ever closer to destroying our nation.
Political correctness is thought control by way of fear of retribution in the schools, work place, in public institutions, and many other places where their used to be what was known as freedom of speech. Evil is good and good is evil, this is the idea behind political correctness it is subversive and evil of itself.
Speak your mind, but more importantly BOYCOTT Hollywood movies or other products and BOYCOTT professional sports events in protest to the leftist socialist-communist movement in this country, take the money you would spend, and spend it on supporting ways to save our constitution, our government, freedom and our way of life.

I now live in Mississippi and this state has some of the finest people in the world. As with most leftists, this govenor makes statements to conform with the prevailing opinion of the loony left. If she truly believes that we can never discriminate, then certainly she must endose pedophilia, marriage between a man and an barnyard animal or even a tree. Maybe this is why she faces possible criminal charges on leaving office–because she is so principled. People make a mistake trying to understand the comments of the leftist looneys–they have no power of reason or logic. Everything they say is for effect

People can love and live with whomever, but to legalize gay marriage is opening a whole can of worms that will cause more trouble than it’s worth. Too many gay marriages are in court trying to figure out why, who, what, when and where it ends. Then brothers & sisters will want to marry legally, and the band plays on and on and on. Gays will be with us always, but not the marriages.

TAX…….have you noticed when they keep throwing more & more money at “the children” it never gets to the children? It always funnels into the pockets of the Unions, the teachers and the administration.

When they truly get rid of bad, lousy teachers and greedy unions and start TEACHING our children useful lessons from well written school books including HISTORY, I’d be all for giving them more money. Just prove money makes them smarter and I’ll shut up, but I know it doesn’t.

I agree Teammommy. I am proud of NC for voting the way it has. Being compared to Mississippi is an honor. If she had her way we’d be compared to Calif. (caution the state of CA. has been determined to be a major cause of cancer in society.), or NY, or Conn.
She is not going to run for another term for Gov. because of two things. One: she would face an embarrassing defeat, and Two: My feeling is our current VP will have to bow out for a second term due to (ahem) health reasons and No-blame-ah will tap her for his veep.
Why? She is a white woman and a southerner that has been in the tank for him all along.
Remember he selected her as one of the ten govs., to head up the brown shirt militia in case of a national emergency. Well, we already have a national emergency only we’re solving it at the polls peacefully. Bubye Bev. See you on MSNBC. I guess one of their 6 viewers might, not me.

Why not compare them to Califoria or many of the other states that have voted against gay marriage? Most (60-65%) people are morally opposed to homosexual behavior. Someone needs to read the first part of the book of Romans to see the down fall and coruption of the human race. The very first trait was to not be thankful to God for what they had. Oh, she is out, don’t worry. Her approval rating had fallen to 30% and she saw the writing on the wall and jumped ship a few months ago. One thing we know is that she will not be our governor next year, she won’t be on the ballot.

NC finally got sick of her and voted in republicans heavily in 2010. She then tried to veto a dozen bills of which a majority have been over-ridden.

Add hearing, every day, about John Edwards (D-NC) who directed his presidential campaign money to cover up the illegitimate child he had while his wife was fighting off cancer. He was our one term senator who served 2 years before he jumped ship and ran for president.

Democrats have much to be worried about in NC.
