N.C. Food ‘Inspector’ Sends Girl‘s Lunch Home After Determining It’s Not Healthy Enough

Students make selections that include organic produce and alternative protein selections at Lincoln Elementary in Olympia, Wash., Friday, Sept. 10, 2004. (AP)
A North Carolina mom is irate after her four-year-old daughter returned home late last month with an uneaten lunch the mother had packed for the girl earlier that day. But she wasn’t mad because the daughter decided to go on a hunger strike. Instead, the reason the daughter didn‘t eat her lunch is because someone at the school determined the lunch wasn’t healthy enough and sent it back home.
Yes, you read that right.
The incident happened in Raeford, N.C. at West Hoke Elementary School. What was wrong with the lunch? That’s still a head-scratcher because it didn’t contain anything egregious: a turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice. But for the inspector on hand that day, it didn’t meet the healthy requirements.
See, in North Carolina, all pre-Kindergarten programs are required to evaluate the lunches being provided and determine if they meet USDA nutrition guidelines. If not, they must provide an alternative.
But that’s not the worst of it. Instead of being given a salad or something really healthy, the girl was given chicken nuggets instead. On top of it, her mother was then sent a bill for the cafeteria food.
Sara Burrows from the Carolina Journal explains:
The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day.
The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs — including in-home day care centers — to meet USDA guidelines. That means lunches must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home.
When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones.
The girl’s mother — who said she wishes to remain anonymous to protect her daughter from retaliation — said she received a note from the school stating that students who did not bring a “healthy lunch” would be offered the missing portions, which could result in a fee from the cafeteria, in her case $1.25.
“I don’t feel that I should pay for a cafeteria lunch when I provide lunch for her from home,” the mother wrote in a complaint to her state representative, Republican G.L. Pridgen of Robeson County, reports the Journal.
“What got me so mad is, number one, don’t tell my kid I’m not packing her lunch box properly,” the girl’s mother told the Journal. “I pack her lunchbox according to what she eats. It always consists of a fruit. It never consists of a vegetable. She eats vegetables at home because I have to watch her because she doesn’t really care for vegetables.”
The Journal provides a copy of the state regulation:
“Sites must provide breakfast and/or snacks and lunch meeting USDA requirements during the regular school day. The partial/full cost of meals may be charged when families do not qualify for free/reduced price meals.
“When children bring their own food for meals and snacks to the center, if the food does not meet the specified nutritional requirements, the center must provide additional food necessary to meet those requirements.”
But what was so wrong with the lunch the mother provided? Nothing apparently. A spokesowman for the Division of Child Development explained that the mother’s meal should have been okay.
“With a turkey sandwich, that covers your protein, your grain, and if it had cheese on it, that’s the dairy,” Jani Kozlowski, the fiscal and statutory policy manager for the division, told the Journal. “It sounds like the lunch itself would’ve met all of the standard.”
It‘s unclear from reports who determined the lunch wasn’t healthy enough. The Carolina Journal refers to the person as a “state agent,” while the Atlanta Journal-Constitution calls the persona “state inspector” who was checking lunches that day. In an email to The Blaze, Caroline Journal reporter said the inspector was “an employee of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Child Development and Early Education.”
The school denied knowledge of the incident and said it’s looking into it.
“While I share concerns about childhood obesity, I still remain uncertain of the right role for schools,” writes the Journal-Constitution’s Maureen Downey. “This story clearly exemplifies the wrong role.”

Feel free to correct if this is wrong. What is amazing to me is it has probably been around much longer than placing all blame on Michelle Obama (who guaranteed does not eat veggies or burgers and fries when visiting dignitaries visit OUR WH. Highly qualified attorneys like steak and lobster after all). Any daycare (home or state) receiving funds from govt. has so many rules and reg. (and control of dollars) one has to be very careful. This was true under the Clintons and probably before that. My understanding from friends is home daycares can no longer compete as state centers are taking over. Private daycares also have rules and regulations but “the poor” cannot afford them. Seems like a glorified “daycare” under pre K school label.

If someone fed their child junk food constantly, why shouldn’t that be considered child abuse. You would be setting them up for obesity, diabetes, and all the other illnesses that go along with it. It‘s ridiculous that people on this site seem to believe that they should be able to get away with pretty much poisoning their children if that’s what they choose.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 5:06pmIt’s getting nearer and nearer to prepare to revolt. Who in the Hell give Sebelius at the Federal Dept. of Health and Human Services or the North Carolina Dept. of HHS to determine what a child can eat or not eat. Popeye use to say, “I’ve had all I can stand, and I can’t stands no more”. It is getting real close to the time that Thomas Jefferson spoke about. It is that extra straw that breaks the camel’s back.
This is just about as idiotic as it gets but it is much more than that. Freedoms and parenting are being taken away by the state, and being replaced by regulations in arenas that the State and Federal government have no basis, constitutional or otherwise to be meddling in our affairs.
The die is being cast and we have some very serious choices to make. Once we cross a certain line, there will be no turning back. We will have our opportunity to do the right thing, and Obama and his cohorts be damned.
Many complain about what is happening in our country under the Obama regime, but few seem to want to take the necessary steps it will take to confront, combat and have victory over this Charlatan-in-Chief and his progeny at the State levels.
This is a war, and it can neither be confronted nor defeated with “love” as Glenn Beck likes to chime in with. This enemy will have to be confronted with all power and authority, holding no quarter, and literally crushed.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 6:02pmI love how liberals imply there is a sinister undertone behind opposition to Michelle’s health goal. It can’t simply be because we believe we should be free to send our kids to school with the sandwich of our choosing or that we should be able self regulate our own salt intake. No, it must be because we hate children, and the poor, the sick, the elderly, women, homosexuals, Muslims, or anyone who is not rich. Yea, that sounds more like it.
I also like how liberals are ok with removing personal choice and responsibility from the individual and placing it in the hands of government…as long as they support the cause.

They do not know common definitions any more. Also check out the definition of “parent”
From the 1828 Websters Dictionary
marriage
MAR’RIAGE, n. [L.mas, maris.] The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. Marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. Marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children.
Marriage is honorable in all and the bed undefiled. Heb.13.

My daughter packs my grandson’s lunch with home made gluten free items, most are home made, how do the food nazi’s know, what the dietary information is for those items? My grandson get‘s ill if he eat’s gluten. Stomach problems, digestive problems, and so forth. They have no right to trump a parent’s right as to what they feed their children. You aren’t really that STUPID. I’ve read too many of your posts.
For anyone you may have influenced with that biased question, however, I’ll simply point out…
One is MURDERING YOUR BABY… The other is a bag of M&M’s.
Last I saw, M&M’s are not POISON.
In fact, in moderation, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them !
I’m with @impeachbo on this one…
If I want to give my child a one-pound bag of M&M’s and a can of coke –
THAT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS !
BUTT OUT !
It may be my child’s birthday. It may be a special treat. We may have just returned from another time-zone and my child may have eaten lunch at 4am, so this may be a snack to tide them over until we can get them back on a normal schedule.
The FACT is – The CONSTITUTION is being trampled by “well meaning” people who think they are ENTITLED to tell others how to live their own lives. Well, you can take your “well meant intentions” and…

Report Post »@smithclar3nc3-Such an internet program exists and operates in several states-it’s calle Connections Academy. Check them out. They currently have two programs. If your state does not fund them as a public school, they have a private school optuion. In North CXarolina, they are working on the puublic option. They currently offer classes as a private school. That means one has to pay out of pocket, but it beats the pants off of the public schools any day of the week. Any way you slice it up, I am convinced that come hell or high water, public schools need to be phased out. Parents know their individual kids better than anyone else. Posted on February 14, 2012 at 2:56pmThis country was better, and more free, when we raised and taught our children on our own. Imagine, we could have kids by the age of 16 knowing more about plumbing, and making good money at it, than a a current plumber with 10 years experience. Computer programmers by 16 that would make Zuckerburg look like a small time hack. But nope. Apprenticeships of your father is now outlawed, and instead, you must send them to an institution that makes sure they have just as much influence on that child as their parents, or in many cases, more so.
Freedom. Liberty. Responsibility. These now belong to the government collective, and individual possession of these is not in process of being taken, it is already lost and has been for nearly a century. Wake up America, your children are slaves to themselves.
With a focus on the collective, every individual is is enslaved to the myth of a collective happiness. With a focus on the individual, everyone in the collective can pursue their own happiness.
Either no one finds happiness, and all suffer. Or, some find happiness, and some suffer. This is why it is very important to raise children with a strong morality and work ethic; the pursuit of happiness is most certainly a trying endeavor not for the ill trained and prepared; and anyone you believe who says it isn’t, is your master.

The problem is, as time has gone on, a growing number of parents are doing a horrible job at raising their children so that the Government feels like they need to step in. I‘m not saying that it’s right or that they should, but generation after generation has shirked teaching personal responsibility and moderation in daily life.
We talk about the younger generation feeling “entitled”…..well, who raised that generation? I remember one year my team getting a trophy in basketball just for participating, and I thought it was stupid. The the next year we went undefeated and got a trophy which I thought was nice, but also unnecessary.
Look at the obesity epidemic that is going on in the US, especially among kids. If you want to be fat, or you want your kids to be fat, that’s your choice and all the more power to you, but then we wonder why medical expenses start to explode and nothing is affordable.
Look at education in our society, it’s horrible, mainly because parents don’t/can’t take an active role in their kids education. I would strongly urge a family to do anything possible to cut back your expenses, in order for one of the parents to stay and homeschool your children. If you have to cut back your lifestyle, it’s worth it, the education they are getting in public schools is horrible and not geared towards actually learning.
We have to expect more out of ourselves, before we can expect more out of our government officials.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 4:00pmHey MOD,
Can you give us any examples of why you think a growing number of parents are doing a horrible job raising their kids?
Do you think the government feels it must step in because of bad parenting?
Or could it be that government itself has created the bad parents?

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 4:15pmThat was my first reaction also. Last time I checked a banana was a fruit and apple juice was made from a fruit. We are told that turkey is a relatively healthy meat. Cheese has milk in it. The only thing questionable is the chips, and if there wasn’t too many of them, they shouldn’t be an issue – especially if they help to get the child to eat the rest of the lunch. In teaching 30 years I saw more school lunches thrown away than you can imagine. The only ones the kids would eat were the chicken nuggets, strips, alphbets, straws and french fries. If it was green, it was in the trash no matter how it was fixed. I wish you could have seen the trash the day the trail mix with prunes was served.

I can think of one reason that the quality of parenting skills has been diminishing over the past several decades that should be obvious.

Report Post »re : Look at the obesity epidemic that is going on in the US, especially among kids. If you want to be fat, or you want your kids to be fat, that’s your choice and all the more power to you, but then we wonder why medical expenses start to explode and nothing is affordable

There are many places, especially in inner cities, where it’s UNSAFE for children to play outside at all. MOST PLACES IT’S UNSAFE FOR A CHILD TO PLAY OUTSIDE WITHOUT HIS/HER PARENTS WATCHING FOR KIDNAPPERS OR PEDOPHILES! If a child is very active, THE TEACHERS INSIST THE PARENTS PUT HIM/HER ON MEDICINE SO THEY’RE NOT SO ACTIVE, THEN m o COMES OUT WITH HER “LET’S MOVE PROGRAM!??? In many instances, the child is considered FAT if he/she is the biggest child in the class. WE ARE FAST RUNNING TOWARD RAISING A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF ANOREXIC CHILDREN!!! HOW HEALTHY IS THAT GOING TO BE?? WHAT DO YOU IMAGINE THE HEALTHCARE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH ANOREXIA ARE? WILL THE CHILDREN ALSO DEVELOP BULIMIA AS SOON AS THEY GET AWAY FROM THEIR NANNY STATE MONITORS?
WAKE UP AMERICA! IT‘S NOT ABOUT THE WEIGHT PROBLEM IT’S ABOUT THE “CONTROL” AND WE’VE LOST MOST OF OUR FREEDOM ALREADY! May God have mercy on us and deliver our nation!!!

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 2:39pmSo chicken nuggets are now a miracle food that contain meat, milk, grains, fruits and veggies ???? Next the kid will be declared obese from eating from the goverment food trough, and the parents will be blamed for it somehow. This is out of control.

Was it some SEIU union thug? How dare they stop this kid from eating her packed lunch. Her lunch was better than ‘chicken nuggets’. Enough of this Education Thuggery. Leave us alone. Do away with the dept.of Education. End it now.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 3:17pmThat’s a comment to the point. Do away with an entire branch of government. Having trouble balancing the presidential proposed budget. No more Department of Education. That should take care of some of the bureaucratic glut. Our children, our families, our schools, our communities are under attack. Shame on the autocrat who took away the lunch prepared with love by her mom and gave her government swill. We should all get used to it. It’s 1984.

Probably a w h plant making sure the child didn’t have toy gun in there to play with at recess. OR MAYBE A REAL ONE TO GET RID OF THE PEOPLE TELLING HER, HER MOMMY DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO PACK HER LUNCH! (Oh that’s right, it’s the adults that are on the terrorist watchlist! I wonder if big sis sent out a new memo adding “people who think they have a right to oversee their children’s diets” to it?)
That list must be getting kind of long by now, I wonder if it isn’t easier for them to make a list of people who “Couldn’t possibly be HomeGrown Terrorists”?
Probably reads: I) Our cabal, 2) people who believe in suicide bombings 3) people who come here on student visas to take airplane take-off lessons 4) people who go on retreats to Pakistani Summer Camps 5) People who surf the internet for how to make homemade bombs 6) people who write odes to all those virgins in paradise 7) People who insist on selling assault weapons to drub cartels 8) ?? (any takers out there?)

We clearly need more NEA and SEIU in our schools-couldn’t put enough mind numb govt trolls into our schools-the kids do speak some english and know to vote democrat once they pop out their 4th kid at age 18. But there clearly is not enough bloated, corpulant, unneeded govt workers in every facet of our lives. Why are there even children involved in a school nowadays-what good is a really powerful Planned Parenthood agenda if we still have kids left to indoctrinate into our lefty screwed up utopian poop dream? Get this crap straightened out libs. You need more order in the whole One World Order thingy.
