UPDATED: N.C. Teacher Suspended For Telling Student He Could Be Arrested for Talking Badly About Obama

Last Monday, a high school student in North Carolina engaged his social studies teacher in a heated debate about politics and the two leading presidential candidates. During the exchange, the teacher (an obvious Obama supporter) got very angry with the student and accused him of disrespecting the president. She even went so far as to tell the boy that he could be jailed for speaking ill of Obama.
Sarah Campbell of the Salisbury Post first reported on the story. She claims that the school district is not releasing the name of the teacher and that she is not responding to requests for public comment (although the two students identified her to the newspaper). According to Campbell’s story, the teacher will not be suspended or even face disciplinary action for what was heard on the recording. A statement from the school was released at the end of the week:
“The Rowan-Salisbury School System expects all students and employees to be respectful in the school environment and for all teachers to maintain their professionalism in the classroom. This incident should serve as an education for all teachers to stop and reflect on their interaction with students. Due to personnel and student confidentiality, we cannot discuss the matter publicly.”
So, how bad was the exchange? It got fairly heated, with the teacher shouting at times. The kerfuffle started after one student asked a question about the teacher’s “fact of the day” that said Romney was a bully back in high school. A student asked:
“Didn’t Obama bully somebody, though?”
The teacher started to get angry and said:
“Not to my knowledge.”
A couple of students relayed the story about Obama admitting that he bullied someone when he was younger. And that seemed to light the fuse on his teacher’s anger. A couple of the students exchanged words with the angry teacher.
“Stop! Stop! Because there’s no comparison. He’s running for president. Obama is the president.”
As one student attempted to argue for a fair, two-sided debate on the history of the candidates, he was shouted down and talked over by the teacher. She continued:
“You got to realize, this man is wanting to be what Obama is. There’s no comparison.”
Once again, the students pressed for equal discussion of the histories of both men, with one saying:
“If you’re gonna talk trash about one side, you gotta talk trash about the other.”
The teacher just seemed to dig her heels in deeper and press her defense of Obama telling the defiant teen:
“You will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom.”
Again the student persisted and invoked his First Amendment right.
“I’ll say what I want.”
The still unidentified teacher read the student her rules…her Obama rules.
“Not about him, you won’t!”
The back and forth continued and the most strident of the two students reminded his teacher that President Bush was constantly treated to negative statements about him while he was in office:
“Whenever Bush was president, everybody talked sh-t about him.”
To which the teacher responded:
“Because he was sh-tty.”
The social studies educator went on for a full minute with more ranting, saying that people were arrested for saying derogatory things about President Bush. The student correctly reminded the teacher that opinions are protected, but you cannot be arrested unless you threaten the president.
Our research has not turned up a single case of anyone in America being arrested for speaking ill of former President Bush. The local newspaper story also mentioned that their discussions about the story with a political science professor could not recall the arrests that the teacher was speaking about.
Update:
We learned the name and the fate of the Social Studies teacher heard on the video posted below. Toyna Dixon-Neely is the woman heard yelling at students who dared to express negative opinions about President Obama. We also found out that Ms. Dixon-Neely’s outrageous statements may not have led to a strict punishment: the local newspaper is reporting that she has been suspended with pay. (Curiously the Huffington Post says that the teacher is on an unpaid suspension, pending the outcome of the investigation by the school board.)

Posted on May 20, 2012 at 4:37pmWhile the first amendment does trump all, the reality of our brave new world is that exceptions to it, such as “yelling fire in a crowded theater” or “making threats against someone”, are the excuses used to encroach on that very law. Soon enough, merely talking about “Obama being a bully” will be twisted into the category of “threat”. If you look at most of our constitutional rights, they have been similarly eroded, and the erosion continues. The right to keep and bear arms comes to mind. Eventually, our rights will be meaningless, devoid of any real protection, even as they remain written exactly the way they originally were.

Think of it this way, you have the right to say anything but you are responsible for the consequences. talking bad about your president does not hurt anyone.

No one can be arrested for speaking badly about the President. There were books out there on how to take out President George W Bush and most were silent about it. The teacher was obviously an African-American who doesn‘t care what the President stands for but will vote for Obama because he’s black. She was only upset because the student presented facts about Obama. As an American in my mid thirties I salute these kids who have the guts to challenge this teacher. The only ones who were respectful were the students. The teacher just showed herself to be a mind-numbed Obama koolaide drinker.

Actually, no one can verify that this incident even occurred or that this student was gay. The alleged victim(who died in 2004) never talked about it and one of the alleged witnesses only became aware of it after WaPo mentioned it. In fact, WaPo had to adjust their story to reflect it.Add to this unfair insinuation that the guy was gay when he never told anyone that he was. It was only PERCEIVED that he was gay.

If she can call Romney a bully because of X, then students can counter that Obama was also a bully because of Y. If she can’t support her statement, then it’s a lie, not a fact. First – as a teacher, those that state a blanket statement of “teacher’s being the problem” are ignorant and should remain silent until they educate themselves. While it is true that over 80% of educators on all levels are Democrat at best and Liberal/Socialist at worst, not all of us are. And while 80% are from the left side of center, maybe only about 20% of those, 1/4, are the problem and put their views into the classroom without merit, warrant, or reason.
Second – for those that stated it was only the “political” teacher that was the problem.. Thank You.
My students ask me all the time what my views are and who I voted for and I simply tell them that I am a Strict Constitutionalist and that I vote based on which candidate I agree the most with (usually the one that taxes me the least and stays out of my life and affairs the most) and then leave it at that.
Third – I am surprised that these students challenged the teacher about showing both sides of the argument and I APPLAUD them for that. I often am the only one that speaks up when a student spouts off about some issue without the facts and based on what their English or History teach said the truth was. ONLY THEN do I step in and educate the student, with facts and questions, about the truth, never hiding the faults of either side of the issue or their good points. The problem is that students DON’T speak up more often.

He is just saying that Obama wrote about bullying a girl in his “autobiography,” in contrast to the WaPo inventing a story about Mitt Romney and publishing it as tho’ it were real. As to the “teacher” (so-called), I would love to see how she scores on any standardized history or social studies tests. She obviously won though, because the kid himself decided to start knocking President Bush and getting the other kids to do the same. For the record, President Bush (the last legitimate President of this country) inherited a LOT more than obama did, coming into office, and dealt with it in a way such that we, as a nation, were gaining in financial recovery quickly, until the socialist/communists took over the entire Congress during the last two years of President Bush’s 2nd term. So when the kid keeps saying that his second term was crap, perhaps he should be taught the TRUTH, that the crappy part was the last two years of the 2nd term…when the socialist/commies had unbridled control.

She deserves to be put on probation and not be receiving any pay until she can keep her classroom as a social studies classroom without her own political agenda being presented. They are there to discuss their feelings, not to be indoctrinated by a teacher who is pushing her candidate, and her thoughts. This is the type of teachers we get in our schools,when they are trained by the left leaning Professors in the colleges. They are in a position of authority, where they are able to infect young minds with their ideals, instead of fostering young minds to form their own reasoning processes. A classic example, is Weathermen founder, Bill Ayers and wife Bernadette Doiran, who bombed public buildings in the 1960′s, and went on to teach in Chicago colleges. There were other patriotic young men and women, who had the same scholarly ability as the Ayers, but they were passed by for the radical Ayers instead. What a shame! We are seeing the results of that decision now, in the actions of the occupiers, and their lack of respect for the United States. Bill Ayers, was recently on TV, spouting his same old rhetoric about this country, proving his same militant attitude still exists., I wonder how many young minds he infected with his hate for America, and how many parents struggled to pay the tuition, expecting to have their child would be instilled with principles and respect for the United States.

If she is reinstated, she should be on a very short leash, under close supervision, and subject to revocation of her teaching credentials in the absence of demonstration to coduct a proper discussion and accord respect for differing views… not to mention learning the facts and not putting forth absolutely false ideas and statements to this in her classroom.
She appears to be not only biased but also ignorant of the facts in her teaching field. The only other conclusion is that she choses to lie to make her points. Hmmmmm!!! Who else do we know who does that on a fairly frequent basis?

First, with bullying becoming all the rage (solely because it has been latched onto the homosexual movement as a means of getting heterosexuals on board), I have to think about something I’ve heard about bullying. I’ve been told that if you do nothing to stop a bully then you are no better than the bully. Rev. Wright’s bigoted, intolerant, small-minded, hateful sermons spoke to Obama with such an intensity that Obama referred to him as a mentor. Obama adored the guy. Rev. Wright is a BULLY. This means one of two things:
1) Obama’s support of this man until 2008 is off-limits for civil discourse, then Romney’s ALLEGED (and very politically convenient) bullying of fellow student when he was in high school must also be off-limits.
2) If it is OK for Romney’s childhood past to be relevant today, then you must allow Obama’s history to be valid today. And you can gladly have that incident because I want Obama’s skeletons exposed.

As long as parents get up the next day and feed their kids to the big yellow bus, their mouths speak outrage but their actions speak tacit approval. Let your actions roar even louder than your words. Go to your local board office and withdraw your kids. There are home school programs on cd rom that kids can do sitting at the end of your desk. If you must work, then enlist your retired parents or grandparents to help. Enlist an unemployed family member who can’t find work in this economy, and slip them a few dollars for helping. It will keep them from despair and keep your kids from this indoctrination. Get your kids out of the hands of the communists. This is what they always do. They take your kids and “reeducate them.”

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 4:04pmMy local public schools are cesspools. I was dying to homeschool but because I must work, that wasn’t an option. So I pulled my kids out of the cesspool and put them in a private Christian K-12 school when they were in middle school. I wish I had done it sooner. It’s a small school so nobody gets away with anything. The children are all from nice families therefore the kids are all nice. There is no bullying, no cursing, sex, fighting, etc. in the hallways and stairwells and the children treat adults with respect and vice versa. The school is full of conservative teachers so there’s absolutely no liberal crap being perpetrated upon my kids. They are also getting a better education. It was the best decision I ever made.

She also had a problem with the English language.My experience with Chicago teachers is a mirror of this. Protected by the CTU. She is what passes for professional. A fireplug would do a better job.

I think most students could telecommute to school. Recess 7 socialization could be playing with the neighborhood kids.
- No more busing (Less Greenhouse gas << for you lefties)
- No wasted time getting to & from school.
- Less cost. School building could be smaller or nonexistent. The bus fleet could be sold
The only reason you need facilities would be for science labs & vocation training.
If both parents work 7 the kids are 12 or younger they could go to a local church, synagogue or YMCA or some other building. where their are licensed staff but not necessarily teachers. the teachers would be online.

I would hopethat every parent in that school demands this teachers dismissal!! I was a teacher and we do not inflict our personal views on the student……….we teach them to gather facts and form their own opinions. In my opinion, this teacher is not qualified to be a teacher!!!
