N.Y. Man Dies in Gym Fight After Police Used Tasers

N.Y. Man Chad Troy Dies in Gym Fight After Police Used TasersCOLONIE, N.Y. (The Blaze/AP) — A burly, incoherent 32-year-old man who rampaged through an upstate New York gym died after going into cardiac arrest when he was repeatedly shocked with stun guns during a struggle with three officers, police said Monday.

Colonie Police Chief Steven Heider said Chad Brothers of Troy had gone to the Gold’s Gym in the Albany suburb just before 6 a.m. and was described by witnesses as “annoying” and in a “highly escalated mood.”

“He was mumbling things,” Heider said. “We’re not too sure what the mumblings were.”

Soon after arriving, Brothers fell off an elliptical machine, turned up the speed on another patron’s treadmill and then punched him in the face. He started toppling 700-pound training machines and throwing 45-pound free weights around the gym filled with about 30 clients and staff.

“It was a rage, that’s what it was described as,” Heider said.

Brothers, who was a muscular 6-foot-1 and weighed between 225 and 240 pounds, went on to destroy a showcase and entered an office where he threw around equipment, including computers, the chief said.

That was when the first officer on the scene, a woman, confronted Brothers and told him to get on the ground and show his hands. At some point, Brothers threw some boxes at the officer and she knocked him down with a stun-gun jolt just before 6:30 a.m.

Heider said that while the officer was trying to cuff Brothers, he stood up with her on his back, was shocked again and then got hold of the Taser, apparently triggering another jolt himself. Two other officers jumped in and used their Tasers in stun mode at least twice and one of the officers hit Brothers with a plastic baton.

“This was a whirlwind of a battle in a confined area,” Heider said. Two wired prongs fired from the first stun gun were embedded in Brothers’ chest and thigh, while the other officers used the hand-held devices in “stun mode” directly against his body.

Brothers went into cardiac arrest shortly after he was subdued with the help of two or three patrons. An off-duty EMT performed CPR while an ambulance was called. Brothers died shortly after arriving at Albany Medical Center at about 7:15 a.m. Heider said information was still being downloaded from the stun guns to determine the precise number of shocks.

The patron who was punched was bruised and the two male officers had minor injuries. None of them required medical attention.

Asked if he believed steroid use might have been involved, Heider said it wasn‘t clear what was behind Brother’s actions or what caused his death. An autopsy scheduled for Tuesday morning will include toxicology screens for steroids and other drugs. Police were getting a warrant Monday to search his apartment.

Heider said he believed his officers acted properly, but the use of force will be reviewed.

I know most others are thinking this, so i’m going to say it… This is a good example why we shouldn’t allow female cops or firefighters for that matter. In the name of feminism, we continue to put our women, who seem to have something to prove, in harms way and innocent people, ok, and some guilty ones also,,, but needlessly, die. When are we going to wake up and shove feminism back into it’s dirty hole that where it belongs. Women have a great deal more power as it is, where it should be, in the home, and in the public… but not in roles that put them at risk, and others too. Let the men take the danger. It’s our role! Eh, for what it’s worth…

Whatever dude. I give those female officers credit. If I was in her situation I would have just shot the guy with a bullet in his torso. Better crazy dude dead than an officer with damaged vertebrae or the perps bodily fluids spraying them in the face.

Believe it or not, I (as a woman) tried to make the police force back in the early 90′s. Did you know that there are different requirements for men and women? For my age bracket at the time, I had to lift (I think, it’s been a while) 50% of my body weight, which at the time was 140 pounds. Men had to lift more like 70% of their body weight. That 220-240 pound man doesn’t care if you are a woman cop, and could pass the physical with lower requirements. I think the requirements should be the same. It’s bad enough that the average woman weighs less than the average man. That said, IF a woman could pass the same restrictions, I’d be all for her being a cop. Equal rights means you don’t have priveledges (like lower standards to get in) – it means everything is equal and sex doesn’t enter the equation.

I used to be a police officer. Women make great police officers. And yes this sounds exactly like excited delirium and it is most likely related to hard drug use. The tazer did not kill this manl like the title suggests.

PS. Atleast in WA state the physical requirements are the same for men and women.

I agree fully! Sounds like that guy could have done the same thing to a male officer. I’ve seen women cops that could kick the tail of most of the other officers in their department. It doesn’t matter if it is male of female, there will always be someone who can “take them on” and win “man to man”. This story has absolutely nothing to do with the police being male or female. I’m a strong believer in protecting women but I also know that if the woman wants to do it, the more power to them. This was a good takedown on the perp and I say “Well Done” to the officers involved in the incident.

Agreed, I didnt see this article as being about a female cop. They are great where I work. With tools like taser, OC, and Glock, as the basic tools you have on your belt. Why should a woman ever have to let it get so far as to where she was in a man to woman fight. Taser is a great tool and surprisingly most departments use of force policies allow for its use early in the stages.

I think longshot is correct that there is something about the guy like drug use thats not being explained here.

This stun-gun-death crap has gotta cease.

They need to learn some wrestling and restraint techniques and stop always trying to use technology to make their job easier. If the stun gun is incapable of incapacitating a person without causing cardiac arrest, then it should NOT be used.

If several tasers and stun guns are needed, then neuromuscular incapacitation is ineffective. Try something else. Like physical restraint by BIG strong MEN, not women.

@ Morgan – haha thats sounds reasonable. Put an officer on trial for murder for using a less than lethal method to subdue a subject. Good idea, you must be in the buisness of wating tax payer dollars. Where are your studies from reliable sources that say taser causes these deaths. I want held up in court cases not your liberal BS police brutality cases. If taser cause cardiac arrest they WOULD NOT BE USING THEM.

So Vman mace the self proclaimed police hater wants cops to get into Physical confrontations with poeple and cease the use of self defense becausehe thinks cops should walk around as big billy badass. You are so contradicting its not funny. I have seen your video and most of your posts because you are the posterchild of hipocracy. You tout police nazi state and brutality but yet you want ” Like physical restraint by BIG strong MEN, not women.” Would you cry more when you got the asswhoopin then rather than taser??? Probably….

Taser was deployed more than once because the subject was able to get the gun away from the female cop. I would have shot him again with taser also. This is absolutly nanny state thinking by these 2 idiots.

You are absolutely correct. Women have no business being in jobs that require brut strength. God put it into the heart of man to be the protecter and the hunter. The left liberal agenda has for years, spawned young boys and men to be docile and cowards. Women are the weaker vessel. They are not unequal, they are just built differently and put together differently and anybody who argues that fact has been brainwashed by modern liberal left propaganda. Women today are brainwashed to be career people and they have become horrible homemakers and cooks. No wonder men leave them and vice versa because reversing roles has caused great confusion.

Proliance I know what excited delirium is as I’ve been in the biz 19 years. However, reality is when that is what the coroner pronounces as the cause of death they generally don’t know exactly what killed the individual. The problem is Chad is responsible for his death for apparently doping up and raging causing his exited delirium to take his life. I really don’t see what the officer involved could have done otherwise than shoot Chad with the real gun. Granted, the problem here is that the CED is not meant to cause death so it opens up a BS lawsuit on behalf of the “wonderful” Chad. Personally I prefer the good old days when we had a big wooden stick and a gun.

That is the gym my wife and I work out at in the morning. I was not there, but she was. The guy was out of control and in state of rage. He got into a fight with a person on a treadmill and was throwing around weights. He destroyed one of the offices and the men’s locker room. The first police officer that arrived was put into a position to tase him based on his overtly aggressive behavior. As the cop was trying to cuff him, he threw her off of him and that is when other officers arrived and tased him again to put him down. An EMT working out at the time started CPR and used a defib unit at the gym. It was amazing seeing what destruction this guy did. My guess is that he was hyped up on more than “roids”….but the coroner’s report will have the specifics. I wonder if that will get get released.

In my hometown back in the early 80′s when the first starting hiring women as cops, they sent a woman to a bar fight. She didn’t wait for back-up (her fault), and went in to settle the fight. She was armed and not with a taser. The men saw her, got together against her, overpowered her, took her out back and raped and killed her. 1. it’s good to have backup (which I’m glad this female officer did) and 2, make sure you’re tough enough for the job, it’s more than writing tickets and pulling over drunks.

I know cops are trained to look out for this because I was trained as a Deputy Sheriff. I also know that if you resist a cop in any way then you‘re going to get what’s coming to you. Deliberate indifference is a great way at getting back at a suspect who ****** you off.

Dustoff23, I was a deputy Sheriff for four years in Tennessee from 2002 to 2006. I quit due to the low pay. One memorable situation I was a suspect went nuts (turned out he had the DT’s) and it took a team of us to restrain him. After he was sprayed and cuffed I rolled him onto his side to allow him to keep breathing and kept a hand on him at all times to monitor him. If he had been dumped into the back a car or someplace where he could not be continuously monitored it could have been deadly for him.

But the reason its memorable is that he was thoroughly pepper sprayed (twice) and I forgot to tell the medical personnel. When the first person walked up and leaned over the suspect she instantly gagged and ran off.

Umm, “glad they are all going home safe”? Didn’t one person die? I don’t think everyone went home safe. “Sounds like the police did their job correctly” yeah it sure sounds that way, but we won’t know until we see the readings on their stun guns. They claim it was set to “stun” when it could have been set to “kill” and they said they gave just a couple of jolts when they may have done dozens. Don’t always take the cops words. There are a lot of innocent people sitting in graveyards because the police “acted correctly” when in fact they didn’t. That’s why states should not make laws against filming cops doing their jobs to hold them accountable. No film, no evidence.

I have carried one on duty for seven years and have yet to find the kill setting. I would sure love to see how you handle a 6-1 240 pound man hyped up on dope. What, would you indulge in some hug therapy or just stand around while he beats the hell out of patrons and trashes the gym. Seriously, what are we supposed to do.
