Nancy Pelosi on Abortion: Catholic Church‘s ’Conscience Thing’ Puts Women at Physical Risk

Nancy Pelosi: Catholic Churchs Conscience Thing on Abortion Puts Women At Risk

Nancy Pelosi’s recent comments about the Catholic Church and its stance on contraceptives and abortion are creating quite a stir.

It’s no secret that the relationship between the Obama administration and the Catholic Church is frosty at best. Among those issues creating angst between the two parties is the notion that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (also known in conservative circles as “Obamacare”) would require health care plans to provide coverage for controversial contraceptives or provide taxpayer-funded abortions.

The Catholic Church, among other faith groups, would like to see the “conscience rights” of health care providers protected, should they decline to refer, provide or pay for abortions or contraceptives that could cause abortions.

This morning, Bishop William Lori, Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, appeared on Fox and Friends to discuss his belief that religious freedom is under attack. “We certainly are experiencing right now some immediate and palpable threats to religious freedom,” he explained.

“Catholic hospitals, catholic charities, our schools, provide first-rate services, and I believe it’s the duty of government to accommodate our religious beliefs and convictions and allow us to perform those services according to our own light, even when we are engaged in a government contract,” he continued. Watch his comments, below:

Pelosi’s comments on the matter — which continue to paint the Church in a negative light — are not likely to improve the administration’s standing among faith leaders.

As the Blaze reported back in October, her statements took particular aim at a bill that passed in the House last month that would amend conscience exemptions in the health care reform law to be more favorable to those who oppose abortion. The congresswoman called the bill “savage.” Additionally, she continued:

“When the Republicans vote for this bill today, they will be voting to say that women can die on the floor and health-care providers do not have to intervene, if this bill is passed. It’s just appalling.”

LifeNews.com, though, puts the bill’s proposals into perspective, making Pelosi’s comments seem somewhat inflammatory:

The Protect Life Act makes it clear that no funds authorized or appropriated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), including tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, may be used to pay for abortion or abortion coverage. It specifies that individual people or state or local governments must purchase a separate elective abortion rider or insurance coverage that includes elective abortion but only as long as that is done with private funds and not monies authorized by Obamacare.

The bill also specifies that insurance issuers may offer health plans that include elective abortion and may offer separate elective abortion riders, so long as they ensure PPACA funds are not used for premiums or administrative costs. The bill also clarifies that issuers who offer elective abortion coverage must also offer a qualified health benefits plan that is identical except that it does not cover elective abortion.

Watch Pelosi’s initial comments, below:

Recently, when asked in an interview with the Washington Post if her comments on the matter went too far, Pelosi stood by them. “They would” let women die on the floor, she reiterated. “Whatever their intention is, this is the effect.” Interestingly, Pelosi, a Catholic, addressed her faith and tried to reconcile it with her contradictory views on abortion.

“…But the truth is what I said. I’m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it…but they have this conscience thing,” she said.  It is this “conscience thing” that puts people at risk, she apparently believes.

On HotAir.com, Tina Korpe writes the following about Pelosi’s religious views:

It means more to be Catholic than to just attend a Catholic Church. The authority of the magisterium is arguably the linchpin on which all other Catholic apologetics hang — and Pelosi’s repeated disregard for it makes me cringe when I read a quote from her to the effect that she loves and honors her faith. I’m not saying she has to be Catholic — just saying she should be honest with herself (and us!) about whether she is.

Back in 2008, Pelosi appeared on an episode of “Meet the Press,“ where she described herself as an ”ardent, practicing Catholic,“ but claimed that ”we don’t know” when life begins.

      @ Conservative Woman,

Your statement that 13% of deaths in pregnant women is misleading and just wrong. And I am an anti-abortionist. A more useful and less misleading statement would be that while every murdered child would have been a burden on their parents and family… without legalized abortion, the fact is that the overwhelming majority of them would still be alive today. That outweighs by far the 13% of mothers who die from complication caused by them mudering their own children. Also, mother mortality rates should be 100% for those who would commit the murder of their own child. Maybe if fathers were allowed to protect their children during pregnancy like they are obligated to protect their wife and already born children, this wouldn’t even be an issue!

He in the modern world we can have all the sex we want and then abort any babies we don’t want, kind of like selective breeding in animals. The government has no business involved in abortion and it‘s the parents AND the church’s responsibility to make sure your kids grow up with MORALS. Pelosi is a public figure using the bully pulpit to push a communist agenda that promotes genocide. The Pope not only should excommunicate that worthless painted Jezebel, but do it by proclamation publicly. And then he should make the proclamation that politics needs to stay the hell away from pandering their agenda with-in the Church period. When politics marries with religion the only thing that comes of it are the Crusades, persecution, and damning inhumanity. No thank you.

As a Catholic I do not agree with your position that she is anywhere near the underpinning majority of the lay person in Catholicism. She’s is an outlier.

Yes, yes I know the Catholic Church is the beast that gives rise to the anti-Christ. Unfortunately for that chain of thought their is a built in fallacy. John the Revelator said pretty clearly that the beast WAS, and is not, but will be again (Rev. 17:8).

The Catholic Church didn’t exist at the time, or before the time of Johns visions. I can tell you what DID exist before John. Paganism, which can be traced to mystery Babylon. Josiah the bo King of Israel attempted to stamp out the worship in the groves. But what did the teachings amount to? Wormwood. The religion of the serpent, the beast. Anything counterfeit to God.

To finish the above post. ANY sect, denomination, or Religion in general that spreads false teaching is anti-Christ. Wormwood exists in Catholicism, in Protestantism, in Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc. Which is why we know that collective salvation is NOT of God. He addresses each of us independently, because Wormwood flows like a river in traditional religion. We must hold to the first fruits, and mark the door posts of our heart with the shed blood of Jesus (the sacrifice) so that death will pass over us.

Her endorsement of abortion is made far worse since she’s purportedly Catholic, than if she were a Protestant disagreeing with her pastor. I don’t know why the Catholics still allow her to claim association with them. I wouldn’t.

Catholic hospitals are created by Catholics. MD’s who choose to can obtain admission privileges. No MD is forced to work at a Catholic hospital. MD’s who choose to conduct abortions go to another hospital. Simple.

Practicing Catholics do believe that a person is created at the moment of inception. Thus, abortion is murder. Catholic hospitals do conduct tubal ligations.

Pelosi can claim she is a practicing Catholic but she is not. Any Catholic that supports abortion is defying the teachings of the Church. I hope that she is excommunicated. Maybe then she can go to the Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist or Presbyterian that support abortion.

Exactly. Women do not want to accept the fact that their decision to have sex is actually a decision to have a child. Every man (in this nation at least) must still accept that his time to have the right to decide whether a child will be born with his name is before he decides to have sex. That is why a man will never have the right to walk away from a pregnant woman bearing his child without criminal or civil charges being pressed and monetary restitution being paid until the child reaches the age of majority. To allow women to have an abortion for any other reason than medical complications such as an atopic pregnancy that can kill both child and mother is just infanticide. Also, once such a complication is discovered after 6 months in utero, the baby has the chance of survival with today’s modern medical techniques so an abortion ANYTIME after that date is also infanticide.

However, I am not a fan of the Catholic church as they are a socialist group that wants us to all fall under the dictatorial rule of the church and a one world gov’t and monetary system that will lead to hell on earth. I love my Catholic grandparents, but I fear what their religion has done and will do to this world.

Nancy Pelosi has made her deal with the devil. Power and prestige in return for betrayal of her conscience. We can pray she comes to her senses before it is too late.

I don’t know why the Church has not excommunicated her already. Buut I agree with your post. She more than likely did make a deal with the devil in exchange for power and money. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when her judgement day comes.

I think I detest this woman more than any other politician in America, even more than Mr. Obama. I think you may be right about some back-room deals she may have made. As tempting as it is to wish for her to fulfill her end of the bargain as soon as possible, I’m going to pray that she repents and accepts Jesus as her savior before it is too late.

I’m not big on church doctrine but I think you CAN break a contract with the devil with true repentance, no? Be nice if she did it now and not on her deathbed after helping to destroy our country.

Pelosi obviously has never read her favorite word “the word”. Or she‘d know you can’t be a Christian without having a Conscience. Just more evidence that she’s a completely inept, unethical individual as her actions and statements usually indicate.

I was raised cothoic and there is a huge amount of hipocracy in the religion. I understand how Pelosi can consider herself a woman of faith and still be as evil as she is with her relentless efforts to rob Americans of life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

I’m not sure what the headline about the “concious thing” referred to…I didn’t see the misuse of the word “conscience” in the text, nor in the videos of the shrivelled up hag, although I can’t say I paid close attention to the videos once I saw her ugly mug. One more for the editors of the Blaze, I suppose.
But the last video, with the hag and tom brokaw, reminded me of just what a putz he was/is.
Pelosi should superglue those hands of hers to her butt; it would definitely help her image, which most of the time shows her gesturing like a mental patient.

      Be Not Afraid,

As Catholics we cannot condemn Anybody. God is Judge. And I am Not doing this. (It’s also a more peaceful existence.)
To my knowledge she IS ex-communicated. In itself, it is not a ticket to hell. Ex-communication means she cannot recieve the sacraments. ie. By her recieving Holy Communion while publicly promoting ‘grave sin’, and it’s not only her, she goes against Catholic teaching. People are rarely refused Holy Communion at the table, but…..

      Cor. 1 11:27-30
Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup
of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of
profaning the body and blood of the Lord Let a man examine himself,
and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks
without discerning the body eats and drinks
judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have
      died.

In time I think the Bishops will get more vocal on this. We don’t get away with anything. It’s between the person and God. I must believe this to Myself, first of all.

pelosi is a prime example of how far communism has infiltrated the world’s oldest Christian religion in America. her intent is to help the obamademocrat socialists to bring it down in America — after all, look how much obama and these actual Godless monsters can’t bear the sight of a Christian crucifix ANYWHERE in America.

Well I‘m sure Nasty Pelosi doesn’t have to worry about that because the Roman’ Churches leader wants some kind of One World Government and a One world bank, and yet he supposedly doesn’t believe in abortion, which adds up to, “One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just isn’t the same.”

Many Catholics have written to the Vatican, protesting the World Bank idea. In theory, a world bank and government run by a benevolent entity elected by the people, is a good idea. BUT, the global elite is not benevolent. The elite want only to dominate every facet of the lives of human beings on the planet.
