NASCAR Driver Apologizes for ‘Offensive’ Tweets About Public Breastfeeding

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne has now reversed course and is apologizing for what he dubbed “offensive” tweets about public breastfeeding. Kahne had earlier recalled an incident where he saw a mother breastfeeding her baby in the supermarket, and tweeted that the incident made him uncomfortable and even caused him to lose his appetite. When a reader called him out on his comments, he responded by calling the reader a “dumb bit**.”
“I understand that my comments regarding breastfeeding posted on Twitter were offensive to some people,” Kahne said on his Facebook page. “For that, I apologize. It was in no way my intention to offend any mother who chooses to breastfeed her child, or, for that matter, anyone who supports breast feeding children. I want to make that clear.”
He continued:
In all honestly, I was surprised by what I saw in a grocery store. I shared that reaction with my fans on Twitter. It obviously wasn’t the correct approach, and, after reading your feedback, I now have a better understanding of why my posts upset some of you.
My comments were not directed at the mother’s right to breastfeed. They were just a reaction to the location of that choice, and the fashion in which it was executed on that occasion.
I respect the mother’s right to feed her child whenever and wherever she pleases.
Kahne also apologized to the woman he lashed out to via Twitter:
As we reported yesterday, the comments came on the day that breastfeeding advocates staged a “nurse-in” at Target stores nationwide. It was a move to stand in solidarity with a Houston mother who says she was harassed by employees at a Target store because of her decision to breastfeed in public.
“It‘s a statement saying ’we’re not freaks,’” Clarissa Bradford, who participated in a nurse-in in Phoenix, told ABC15. “We’re not walking around with our breasts hanging out. Even if we are, it’s just to feed our babies.”

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 10:14amYour allowed an opinion only if it is politically correct. It happens on here too. Someone says something then someone attacks….It is natural. The problem is when somone, especially a reporter, nags on it for days or even weeks, like they do on the MSM, tearing the individual with the opinion, down. That is why some come out immediately and apologize, so their character doesn’t get kicked around on every polically correct TV station around the world.

It has nothing to do with how he really feels, it has everything to do with keeping your ride in NASCAR. If you were in his shoes, you too would be begging forgiveness. The alternative is watching your million dollar paycheck walk away. It’s a simple as that. It’s easy to call someone else a puss.., it’s harder to do the right thing, even when you don’t believe it.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 1:11pmKochleffel……It is so ridiculous for people to be discomforted by the use of a breast to feed a child. Most women keep themselves covered and if you accidentally see something- no big deal. You see half naked women showing really offensive stuff on nearly every magazine cover, more cheek at Hooters, not to mention movies….all which are sexual. A woman’s breast has a primary function…..feed babies. They are not toys.

Unfortunately for Kasey he represents many companies like Red Bull, Goodyear, etc. who don‘t want their companies associated with anything negative or excluding so that’s where the pressure came from to apologize. I don’t think women should be exposing themselves or nursing their babies in public. It’s weird, sometimes gross, and always uncomfortable for others around. To those of you bashing people for not wanting to see an extremely large womans deformed breast…. sorry, that’s life…. nobody wants to see shamu’s mammary anywhere, especially not around their food. However, don’t do it in public. Period. Don’t do it in public. I don’t want to see your ****, and most other people don’t either. Use a cover-up, go get in your car, go to the bathroom, PLAN YOUR DAY BETTER, but don‘t just whip ’em out like a cow. Sure it’s natural and normal to do, but so is taking a crap or passing gas. Some things you just shouldn’t do in public.
Report Post »Poppet
Posted on December 30, 2011 at 11:28pmIt has nothing to do with “wanting” to breastfeed in public. If it is time for your child to eat, you are going to feed them. Mother‘s milk is a breastfed child’s only source of food. Yes, nursing is a bonding experience, but it’s first and foremost about feeding your child. To suggest that a nursing mother should not feed her child in public when that child is hungry- that she should stay home- is the same as saying a mother with children who are capable of feeding themselves should stay home with her children all the time for fear that the kids might get hungry when they are in public. It’s ridiculous. Nursing can and should be done discretely and modestly in public. It‘s not hard but some women have the mentality that because it’s a natural thing to do, people should not be offended by seeing a child latched on to a boob. I don‘t want to see a nursing mother’s boobs even though I agree with breastfeeding.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 8:01amWhat I find more offensive than people having a problem with breast feeding mothers is the fact that these are usually the same idiots who wouldn’t care at all if a hottie walked in with daisy dukes and bikini top, but somehow its offensive when a mother feeds her child. We know why, its because men in general have a hard time with the something they view as purely sexual being used in a way that makes their fantasy life feel dirty. Look I breastfed both of my daughters until they were about a year old. Most of the time I did it in such a way as to where most people just thought they were sleeping. I was discreet but we tolerate women flashing the camera on girls gone wild and then have a problem when mothers breastfeed. Get a grip people. Breastfeeding should be done discreetly but it also shouldnt be restricted either. BALANCE is required. I breastfeed where I choose, it was my babies that decided when and where that needed to happen and if I had to do it in public, I did it in public. Didn‘t give a rat’s behind who had a problem with it. I was discreet and didn’t care who had a problem with it. Women need to be discreet yes but beyond that everyone else needs to get a life and move on.

The mother should have a little more respect than that. My first experience when I was trying to learn to be discreet was a woman in a bowling alley. She pulled up her t-shirt, unhooked the flap on her bra (exposing the whole breast) and had her 18 month old walk up to her on the seat of a booth and start feeding. To me, who believes it should be a natural thing, that was embarassing.
