Nasty and Indefensible: National Review Fires John Derbyshire Over The Talk: Nonblack Version

National Review has fired John Derbyshire in the wake of his controversial article “The Talk: Nonblack Version,” published Friday in Taki’s Magazine.

Written in response to articles on “the talk” some black parents have had with their children in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting, Derbyshire described some of the advice he allegedly gave his own children on the matter.

Including lessons like “Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally,” the article has drawn fire from both sides of the aisle for being racist. Some of his other lessons include:

(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).

(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.

(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.

(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.

(10g) Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.

(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.

(10i) If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.

National Review’s editor Rich Lowry released a statement Saturday evening explaining the why they fired Derbyshire:

Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream,” or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.

    I am a white male,42,and so disurbed by this administration.but the things direshire said,do not apply to all black Americans (or what ever sharpton or the other race baiters feel that they want to be called on this day) I live across the street from a family that I have a very high respect for! the wife is a very calm cool support to her husband,the husband is a very cool person also,I see him out in his yard coaching his little girl in basket ball and soccer , he takes the time to raise his daughters! They are constantly going to games. THIS RACE CRAP needs to stop!! I have nothing but respect for any man or woman that takes care of and raises a good family. Al,jessi,sharpton,ect…Bite us! I dont care what color you are! ARE YOU A GOOD HONEST PERSON, or not! that is the way to pick the people you respect,do you love your country? All this race crap needs to stop,YOU CAN PIC YOUR FRIENDS!!
    from my prospective,I see a morals issue not a race issue.

      Yes he has been fired. We always need martyrs. There will be more and they will likely need to be well versed men. The truth will finally come in waves that will not stop. We owe a great gratitude to John Derbyshire. He has put us on the road to a cure and a defense from the great RACIST STICK so many of us have been beaten with or have had to whisper the truth in fear of.       Give us a break! He didn’t say all blacks. I’ll give you three neighborhoods in Detroit to walk your family down at night and attempt to avoid a beating. Better yet go by yourself and suggest to them racism needs to stop and that they need to love the white folks.

      Exactly right. Has there every been a civlized nation out of Africa? My goodness people. yes there are some very good blacks and there are some extremely bad whites.. All Jews are perfect of course but we have to look to the averages and make the sweeping generalizations if you want to live..

      I mean my god who hasn’t got turned around in a black community and feared for their lives? They are like a pack of dogs..They feed off of each other.. I grew up around it and I’ve literally seen it dozens of times.. I witnessed in school and I’ve seen it on the streets… No white man would take their families into a black community after dark.. It’s just common knowledge. Hell nowadays they’re actually coming into our neighborhoods stealing and killing.. They say that’s what the little Travon thug was doing..       Just as we hear we uttering the truism “But not all of them…some Blacks are nice”, etc., this must be acknowledged. But it must also be likewise acknowledged that, just as there are indeed some fine Black people, they are, unfortunately, in the minority in America today. Most Blacks in this country today are just as Derbyshire wrote and any honest person – of any color – must acknowledge this fact as well. Your upstanding Black neighbors are very atypical. It’s unfortunate, but nonetheless true.

      I think John Derbyshire is guilty of stupidity .
      His professional journalism went out the window.
      If he did this “as a shock rebuttal” to “the talk”
      It worked and he received his reward for not thinking
      this through.
      I personally think if he would have included
      ALL mob-rule type settings black/white ect.
      Nobody would have even read the article…why?
      Because it’s common parenting 101 to warn your kids
      and it could potentially save your children lives.
      Because there isn’t a SANE person here of any color/race
      that would allow their child to walk into a hostile
      situation that has a…. “mob rule mentality with evil intent”.

    Why should Derbyshire be fired? Would a black columnist making the same point with races reversed be fired? If he was it would be called out as an example of racism and he would be reinstated with probably a large damage payout.

    Like Derbyshire I have had it with political correctness. I do consider much of black America dangerous, especially now with the reaction to the Trayvon Martin shooting. Why would I venture into the land of the hoodied young black when I can stay in my mostly white suburb and be safe?

    Black leaders have created this tension by constantly blaming white society and white racism for the problems that the urban black faces. Why aren’t Jeremiah Wright and Al Sharpton in the forefront of a movement to keep black kids in school? Why isn’t Louis Farrakhan calling out retribution on the thousands of lawless blacks that terrorize our inner cities?

    I am not a racist nor will I allow myself to become one. But, if a particular demographic is being inspired to hate people like me, please forgive me if I remove myself from your presence. I wish only to live the full measure of my appointed days.

    Think most of us that aren’t libs & were unaware of their long used effective strategies of the likes of Alinksy, have been getting a great education on what they were taught by lib professors/mentors. Just read this about what they use to keep us quiet re issues they don’t want the truth out about:

    All the stuff this man says about blacks, most of us already knew about and were warned – just common sense too. There are very good reasons to be distrustful of them b/c of the facts about the stats of the numbers of crimes committed by them. You’d be stupid not to take precautions.     If this article had been written in JET, Oprah, Essence, Ebony or any other publication targeted at Americans of “The Continent of Africa” Decent regarding them visiting cities in this country where white gangs wearing hood-less collegiate sweat shirts might be roaming the street it would have been acceptable. Most persons in this country are aware of the hazards of being in any public setting in which groups of any kind especially people of color are congregating is risky.

    Every American can watch the news nightly or any “cop” show and see the vast majority of crimes committed in this country are by people of color. For Derbyshire to have the balls to actually report this and teach his family and children to be aware is admirable. For him to be fired for telling the TRUTH is sickening. We have created a cancer in this country which will destroy the American way of life for all.

    I am a boomer and can assure you everything this country (starting with busing) has done in my lifetime to create equality, has done nothing more than dumb down this country and create a society of dependence.

    Next time you go shopping face reality and prove a point to yourself; make every effort to purchase 1 item produced, manufactured, invented or developed in/on/or from the African Continent.       I will not conform.
      I for one am glad that National Review has decided in this instance to have a standard that runs slightly higher than “They do it too.” Derbyshire’s views in this article are racist and the argument that the other side does it, or we are all thinking it, doesn’t excuse it.

      In reading some of your comments I don’t see where you are any less raciest then the NBPP, NAACP, CBC, etc. accuse you of being. Worse yet you are sounding as raciest as they are.

      National Review gave one of the most fair minded and reasonable explanations for why they will no longer carry this humorous, fine line walking writer.

      Don’t join the trend of calling good evil and evil good just because it serves your side.

      I agree; I am shocked by the majority of postings here in this thread. To think that there are this many racists trolling TheBlaze is horrible!

      I saw a great program of Glen Beck ( I believe) on FoxNews a year or so back, where an inner-city school that was predominantly black was failing miserably in all ways academically. New leadership came in, made huge changes such as instituting a dress code, hiring more qualified teachers, etc. The change in student grades was incredible! It wasn’t a racial problem that they had, it was socio-economic problems that were keeping those kids from succeeding!

      Derby believes there is more crime, violence, illiteracy, etc. in poor/urban black communities simply because they are black. The truth is that the current urban culture and socio-economic problems are to blame, not race.

      Hate is taught; children are not naturally born racists. When I was a kid in a poor neighborhood (we all lived in trailers/mobile homes), I had neighbors who were white, black, Philippino, Thai, etc. We all played together just great. When you’re a kid and you want to play, you don’t care what the other kid looks like or what his race or religion are, you just want someone to play with. People think all Southerners must be racists, but we’re not. That was our neighborhood, and we were a bunch of poor southerners in north Florida. We had no violence, no shootings, no ganges. In Derby’s world, our kind of neighborhood can’t exist.

      I’ll tell you the difference. Both white people and black people wear baggy pants (which glorifies convicts), and they both wear hoodies, and they both bop when they walk. Now when I see someone walking through a neighborhood whether they are white or black wearing those clothes and bopping as they walk, the first thing I think about is all the gutters wicked people have dug in our nation for people to get stuck in, the second thing I think is that this modern youth is mentally weak, the next thing I think is “Thug”, and then I think “Threat.” Now likewise alternately if I see a black person or a white person walking through a neighborhood wearing a nice sweater and slacks I don’t think “Threat.” And that’s just the way life is because in this modern age the human mind deduces a threat by the process of elimination, and common denominator. A person’s race has next to nothing to do with this process for most people I would say.

      And then I think about how many school systems around the nation, even starting in grade school, allow students to use calculators in mathematics whereby the student doesn’t have to use their brain to show their work, and neither do they have to use their brain to deduce, or look for the common denominator thereby creating automatons who can not rationalize the things that the “Popular idea” creators disseminate out to our society.     Hey, National Review, not only is he defensible but I’m going to prove it by DEFENDING HIM. That man has more balls than all the rest of your staff rolled into one. He took a step that was long awaited and long needed. I and, I’m sure, many others are grateful that this man finally dared to speak out loud what most of us have been whispering under cover for YEARS. You do what you have to do, but National Review will never be purchased by this reader. I’ll be looking for stuff written by John Derbyshire wherever written matter is published.     this is not racism, it is common sense. is it a secret that whites aren’t safe in black neighborhoods? just be white and live in one, I have. you don’t look at anyone walking to the bus because someone always wants to kick a crackers ass. second, have we not seen how black politicians protect and advocate for blacks 99% of the time? just think of the black wing of the democratic party, or the black caucus. or the naacp and every other group looking after one group of people because of the color of their skin. have we not read the stores lately of the racially motivated attacks on whites from blacks acting in a mob? come on and wake up. use your senses and the new info we have learned. get out of there if you become a minority. because the truth is out there.

    Geez‘s that’s a suprise! From the minute I read it this morning I knew he was toast, even if every word he said was 100% the best advice he could give. We are now so PC we can’t tell the truth or discuss how to be safe against a particular group, ie: hoodlums of the different color. No all black people are bad, but reading the news what he says is spot on in certain conditions. I defy anyone on that PC crap of magazine to defy his common sense and do the opposite of what he says. They are total hippocrits. There are also hispanic areas to avoid, but it’s all about where you live. Remember the state fair last summer? It is sad that this is a new truth, but not everyone is nice, caring and to be trusted. This country is no longer what it once was, where people could stop and help and not get robbed or killed, or where you are safe in a crowd, walk down a street and not fear for your life in some areas. Sad, but what he said is good advice.

    I’m just an audio guy.. I make no claims to anything else.

    I took the 911 call with the most audio informatiion regarding screams, pulled down some of the louder noises (the actual shot and a few times the woman caller gets a bit loud) so they don’t hurt you while listening to the softer noises… Then ran it at a slower speed and pitch corrected it 100 percent true. Anyone with an ear for music can tell not a note has been changed.. Digital affords you this luxury. In the analog days we had to physically slow the tape/medium down and you lose pitch and clarity.

    THIS AUDIO IS NOT ENHANCED per sey.. not like enhancing a photo.. the only enhancing has been to adust volume levels so you don’t hurt your ear listening to everything at relative volume levels.

    There are a few swirling artifacts in this copy because I had to compres the wav file to a 128 kbps mp3 to fit on my page so you had a player to hear it on.. These artifacts are slight and will not distract.

    This exercise is just a way to access the call and hear things you would not of as easily (but every bit of audio information from the original is still there) just listening to the raw recording. Akin to slowing down video without the frame per second limitations.

      It was meant to be sarcastic and it could have been construed as unapathetic to black Americans that are raised in poor neighborhoods. I wish black Americans would realize how the left is still enslaving them by keeping them down and making them seem like they can’t survive without a handout! Crispus Attucks made it out of slavery and ended up joining Colonists to rise up against the throne, but I digress!

      I for one am glad that National Review has decided in this instance to have a standard that runs slightly higher than “They do it too.” Derbyshire’s views in this article are racist and the argument that the other side does it, or we are all thinking it, doesn’t excuse it.

      “Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.”
      This is racism by definition. Just because it strikes a vengeful nerve with you in these racially heated times, doesn’t excuse it or you who are praising it. Just because the other side, who have no standards, get away with saying worse doesn’t excuse it.
      The only way any of you can finger point at a double standard is if you have a higher standard yourself.

      In reading some of your comments I don’t see where you are any less raciest then the NBPP, NAACP, CBC, etc. accuse you of being. Worse yet you are sounding as raciest as they are.

      National Review gave one of the most fair minded and reasonable explanations for why they will no longer carry this humorous, fine line walking writer.

      Don’t join the trend of calling good evil and evil good just because it serves your side.

      Sorry but Derbyshire did nothing but point out the obvious. Which by the way is the same thing that black comedians like Cedric the entertainer, Dave Chappell, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, etc. do everyday. For comedy to be truly funny, it has to have an element of truth in it. So how come we laugh, cheer and applaud when a black comedian points out the obvious truth but we scream racism when a white writer does the same thing?
      Seems to me like you’re spending way too much time focusing on the messenger instead of paying attention to the message.

      Krebs and Maccow, I’m with you both on this. Black communities are not more violent or illiterate compared to white communities because they are black. They are, on average, more violent and illiterate because of cultural and socio-economic reasons, such as poverty. Here‘s something from a teacher’s perspective:

      Just taking literacy and education as an example: in both white and black households where there is readily available reading material such as books, newspapers, magazines, etc., the children in those households tend to make better grades in school, whether they be white, black, hispanic, asian, or whatever. Where materials lack, student performance also is lower across all races.

      Derby is a racist; he admitted that back in a 2003 interview with RedState contributor Kevin Holtsberry. According to RedState archives, Derby said, “I am a homophobe, though a mild and tolerant one, and a racist, though an even more mild and tolerant one, and those things are going to be illegal pretty soon, the way we are going.”

      I refuse to judge people based on their race. If I see a group of white youths in hoodies and low-hanging pants, I walk on the other side of the street just as I would if I saw a group of black youths like that.

      For Derby to attempt to soft-peddle his racism by saying that it’s not all blacks, but on average they are less than whites, it is still racism.
