Nation of Islam Member Claims Police Brutality After Releasing Violent Arrest Vid

A Nation of Islam Member in Alabama is claiming police brutality after his attorney released video of his brutal arrest.

A security camera captured police apparently striking 29-year-old Travarious Daniel multiple times during a March 20 incident:

“The Nation of Islam wanted to let people know what was done to him,” Charles Salvagio, Daniel’s attorney, told Reuters. “The guy had his hands up and was trying to surrender. When he came to my office, he looked like he had two heads, it was so swollen.”

“The mayor is disturbed by what he has seen of the video,” the major’s chief of staff, Erskine “Chuck” Faush Jr., told Reuters on Thursday.

Daniel’s accusations, however, have not shielded him from charges. Reuters reports undercover police were chasing him in the first place “after observing him take the keys of a parked car and remove a GPS, a Dell computer and a carton of cigarettes that he then put into his own car.”

He’s been charged with receiving stolen goods and breaking and entering into a vehicle, and an additional felony charge of possession of a stolen firearm is expected.

Two officers involved in the incident have been put on paid administrative leave pending a full investigation.

    Police need to realize that when some one is struck in the head, they are naturally going t try to cover their head. But most arrogant offficers say they were resisting by not putting their hands behind their back. If you tell the pope to get down on the ground the cram your knee in his spine and crush his head to the pavement, chances are he will probably put his hands on his head to protect himself. I have great respect for good police but the bad , arrogant, young hot headed ones ruin t for the good ones. I have seen situations where if the officer is not an adrenaline junky and doesnt try to force someones elbow to the back of their head that they will eventually go peacfully. if not thats what the tazer is for. an officer if following protocol should never have to forcefully hurt anyone. I saw an officer tell a guy to get on the ground and put his hands behind his head, the guy put his hands behind his back so the officer got pissed off and crammed the guys hand up to his head and screamed in his ear “ i said hands behind head ” and dislocated the guys shoulder. 6 of 1 half dozen of another.

    The Judicial system must be put back in the hands of the citizens. Not the police, judges, DA’s and lawyers. 16 hr / 6 day jury trials for everyone who has broken the law. This includes punishment, plea deals and fines. This right was given to US by the Constitution and is 1/3 of OUR government not theirs. Crime doesn’t sleep nor should justice.

    We can Take this RIGHT back by starting in our local courthouse and police departments and work our way up to the Supreme Court!

    REAL speedy trials for the innocent, victims and accountability for the guilty.

      Code Green…I saw a guy get off a car, stop with his hands out, officers begin to push him two or three more steps, then one other officer jumping on top of him and began to beat him. Once on the ground, I don’t see where he even got a chance to resist. Perhaps this is another one of those “stun moves” ya’ll talked about on the last video. Except this cop seems to have given one move after another after another after another….

      I only saw the video twice and of coarse, we also have the whole “you didn’t see what happened before…” thing but as it looks to me, this is another case of police going over the line. Just my opinion obviously…

    Ok, after yesterday‘s video of the cop slamming the drunk guy’s face into the concrete, I supported that police officer and his actions. This time the cops may have and probably gone too far. The guy had his hands out. At the most the cops should have tasered him before they beat the crap out of him.

    This certainly “appears” to be police brutality. However, the video does not show what happened prior to the take down, or indicate what threats the officers were presented with early on. That’s why it only “appears”.. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail in this matter and the truth will be revealed. I for one appreciate the majority of our police and law enforcement officials…except for the ones that advocate for stepping on 2nd ammendment rights.

      Walking away with your hands up is not surrender. It is the first sign of attempting to create distance for fight or flight. I am sure the police were just driving around looking for someone to give the old downtown beatdown to and this innocent citizen/victim had nothing to do with the encounter.

Bottom line he broke into a car and took things that didn’t belong to him, no matter what religion. I guess he forgot to wear his religious name tag while committing this crime. If the officer used too much force in arresting him then he needs to be held accountable too, but proceedures are now being followed by the sheriff, so we will see.

      I am sick and tired of the coddling of criminals, the preoccupation of insuring their “rights”, the lack of sympathy and reparations for the victims of their crimes. The tax payers have to pay for their incarceration for years with no payback. Make them work, or send them to a penal island to fend for themselves.

      A Well Written Police Report

      He could have been this guy…

      Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta , Georgia , told police he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta , on surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket… When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door.

      Outside on the sidewalk were four Marines collecting toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back; the injury did not appear to be severe. After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment.

      The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw…injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off of the curb after stabbing the Marine.

      As the thief was breaking the law he become an Outlaw. He should be treated as such. Would be nice to hear the police’s side of the story. The worst thing in this country came about when the USA gave rights to Outlaws. I do understand that innocent until proven guilty is important. But it is also important that a person who is obviously an outlaw, should not get rights but a nice little island in the middle of nowhere with his other outlaw friends.

      When FOUR cop cars finally corner you, STAY IN THE DAMN CAR!

      Given the guy‘s crime and his ability to just waltz right out of the car as if it’s no big thing, the cops had every reason to wonder how much he respected the cops’ authority. And THAT’S why he got slapped around.

      Cops put their lives on the line for public safety, and people who have no respect for authority are dangerous, and they need to be put in their place, or the cops may end up dead.

      Once again, the cops did their job here.

      well, having been in law enforcement, I can tell you that when a suspect of physical stature refuses to put his hands behind his back, one tactic is to inflict pain in order for him to comply. It appears this dude is a body builder and knows how to refuse being handcuffed. I‘ll guarentee if he’d have put his hands behind his back when ordered, this wouldn’t have happened. and remember, a stolen gun was in his possession. There’s no way of knowing if he had another in the front his pants. Look again at the end of the video. He was still refusing to comply, which is why he was struck again. But his attorney will get the jury he needs and the prosecutor will most likely not bring this up

The video shows once he put his hands up the cops attacked him, brutally beating him while he was laying face down on the ground. Dare I say what the cops have done to this person is criminal.

      Fair is fair. The law applies to all says the United States Constitution. Our laws are not to be circumvented for personal use or gain. These cops are lawless and should be held accountable. I would feel the same way if black cops treated a white guy like that.

      The way I see it, our policemen and sheriffs are the ONLY line of defense we now have in this country…without them we’d look like any other heathen country on earth! They did seem pretty rough on the guy in the video…don’t worry, Holder will get right on it…he’ll see to it that a full investigation is done and justice is served!

      @OLD TRUCKERS

      I don’t care what his religion is. I don’t care what the nationality of the person is.

      I understand that he is a criminal however the treatment of this person is abusive. Tasers could have been used over and over again. You want me to believe that all of those officers couldn’t control one individual that was face down on the ground?

      I could care less, lock all the criminal up. Throw away the key when necessary. I even support capital punishment however the law applies to all. Its obvious that the officers training went right out of the window during this arrest.

      There are so many violations here. That’s why the department took action.

      Re-train the officers and call it a day. I’m not a cheerleader for the criminal, what I am advocating is that rules, regulation and procedures be followed, especially the law.

      Look close at the cops trying to cuff the guy and not being able to. Yes this guy had his hands up, but once he hit the ground he put up a fight. It is called resisting arrest. Here is how I have managed to not get beaten by the cops: first, I don’t break into a car and steal items; second, I don’t have possession of a stolen firearm; and third and most important, I don’t run from the police. Following these simple steps as I do will bring the probability of you getting beaten by the police to an almost negligible level.

      Was he beaten a little excessively, yeah maybe, it looks that way. Did he commit a crime and run from police, yep looks and sounds that way. Did he have possession of a stolen firearm, yep that‘s what’s been reported.

      I’d rather see scum like this get a little over due attention, than to see officers or civilians shot or killed by people that have no regard for others. It‘s a little late to put your hands up and say ’I give’ after running from the law. To avoid the beat down he should have fallen directly on the ground and not moved.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Classic ! The perp might have a strong case if he decides to sue the shoe manufacturer because he slipped so aggressively. LOL
      Go Marines !
      Bad behavior doesn not excuse bad behavior. “Cops” are supposed to protect and serve. That means protect rights/lives not self-interests or anrgy feelings. A man on the ground does not deserve to be repeatedly beat. I’m sure the thief is a d*ck but that’s what punishments by the courts and juries resolve. “Cops” are not paid to lay out punishment. There is a reason they have a confined role. (well, are supposed to)
      If he wasn’t fighting back, it wouldn’t take that many people to hold him down. It’s a little difficult actually to see what happened on the tape–it’s grainy and jumpy. He looked like he was running to me–but was intercepted in the other direction and saw his hopes dashed being surrounded.
      How about instead I just used MY 2nd ammendment right, solve the situation THEN call a cop to play clean up? You operate under the false assumption that we all want or need “protected”.
      How about I use MY 2nd ammendment right and stop the beating the call a cop to clean up? You operate under the false assumption that everyone wants or needs “protecting”. You also believe that cops are legally obligated to answer your call. (they are not)
      This was not about you and your sycophant relationship with “the authorities”. This is about a human being, wielding a badge and gun that handed out punishment which is not his mandate. Can you describe to me how you tactically subdue a subdued man by beating him in the back/head after he is subdued? Even the question makes no sense, you certainly can’t think the answer does.
      Take it easy, I think you understand the point. Cops deserve your respect for the work they do. Many of them are killed while working to protect the likes of you. They are killed by the the kind of person you claim was overly beaten. Shed some tears for the slain officers, and none for the criminal.
      We are a nation of laws, where politics, religion, race or other uncontrollable factors, should not, must not, intervene or trump either democracy, or individual rights.
      This man beaten, without the officers being in imminent danger, is reprehensible. If found to be true—not covered up for the protection of a non-white man, or ANY other human being—-they should be punished according the the applicable statutes, and context of the event by judge, to the maximum extent possible.
      Any man brutalized in a functioning police state, if that can be determined either now, or in historical sense, is the victim of government, because it cannot be reasonably negated that government is the only legitimate, sanctioned, form of violence in any civil society.
      No one of conscience, or reason, would justify this action.
      To AFISHFARTED: I was in law enforcement for a few years also. I hope you weren’t taught that blows to the head were a proper use of pain compliance. At the academy I learned that strikes to the head were a good way to end up in federal court.
      Strikes to the shoulder, large abdominal muscle mass or outer thigh are fine. Digging a thumb into the soft spot below the ear is ok also. But a strike to the head turns a suspect into a victim, and a law enforcement officer into a felon.
      What are you talking about? Reread both of my posts above once again before making such a ridiculous statement. Here is a friendly suggestion, how about you step out of the “Pit” to better manage your reading comprehension skills and become a better “Boss” of one-self.
      Officers are supposed to be a cut above the rest. That is why they were chosen out of thousand of applicants. They receive “Special Training” on how to deal with just about every aspect of their jobs. Officers are civil servants. They are not allowed to carry out punishment/judgement, that’s for the courts to decide.
      Clearly the officers training went right out the window. Did you also notice the guy on the ground getting kicked as well? How many officers are at the scene? They couldn’t subdue that criminal using the training they “all” received?
      At what point does it become abusive, after the guy is dead? Once again, the officers are not to carry out judgment! That is what the courts are for. If they cannot preform their duties then perhaps another career is better suited for them.
      Lastly, I could care less what his religion or nationality is. This is America we are better than this. When is it okay for authority to beat up on civilians no matter who or what they are?
      Dan – I gave you the benefit of the doubt and re-read your ramblings. Once again, you sound like a PC-saturated lib. If you look closely in the video, you will see four…count ‘em…FOUR police cars stopped behind this choir boy. That would lead me to believe that quite a chase ensued before they were finally able to stop him. After police stop a car they have been chasing, they normally instruct the perp to laydown with his hands out to his or her side…not run to the sidewalk waving his hands to his side like a soaring hawk. As well as the charges of receiving stolen goods and breaking and entering a vehicle, “an additional felony charge of possession of a stolen firearm is expected”. Just another poor, misunderstood youngster who was doing his best to fully cooperate with law enforcement, eh? Yes, this misguided young man is innocent until proven guilty…but so are the law enforcement officers. They must not only protect lives of innocent citizens, but also protect themselves when dealing with these thugs. So, don’t be so smug, self-righteous, judgemental and quick to assume.
      Okay, according to you I’m a pc saturated lib. Well, if you were familiar with my post history on “The Blaze” you would know that isn’t the case and nothing could be further from the truth. I would like to ask you, isn‘t calling people names the same tactics the left uses when someone disagrees with them or when they’re loosing an argument? Just a thought.
      It feels like I’m beating a dead horse here. Yes he’s guilty, yes throw away the key or give him the chair or 25 years to life but the punishment is left to a jury, not the officers. He’s resisting arrest, taser his a@@, not once but many, many, many times!
      Granted, when the criminal was brandishing the gun he should have been shot on the spot. No questions asked but when officers beat someone senseless because they are pissed off or because they “lost it” or forgot departmental procedures/training at the heat of the moment well, perhaps they need to look elsewhere for a job. They are trained for situations like this for a reason and once again I must reiterate, their training went right out of the window.
      So according to your logic, anyone who resist arrest should be treated this way? Perhaps your emotions are getting the best of you just like it did those officers… after all, we’re all human and to be human is to err.
      Think about it, Dan. You have no idea what happened prior to the beginning of this short clip. You have no clue what a threat to the officers’ lives this thug may have been. Yet, here you are chastising your fellow conservatives for supporting the good guys (the police) who work hard keep our streets safe, and you’re taking the side of the bad guy (the stolen gun-toting thug).       I take that back, Dan…there is something else:
      These cops work damn hard to do a very taxing, stressful job. They risk their lives every day in the streets and we have no idea what kinds of pressures they’re dealing with there as well as in their personal lives. They’re not perfect. They’re human beings and just like you or me, so they probably make an occasional mistake. So, let’s say that was the case here and the officer used more force than necessary. Is that any reason to ruin his career? Let’s face it…this was not a routine traffic stop. The clown they arrested was a sociopath that would undoubtedly break into your house in an instant with a stolen gun and threaten you or your family. He could care less about you. So, why the hell should we be overly concerned if he got roughed up a bit? Maybe he’ll think twice the next time he decide to pull something stupid.
      @PITBOSS711
      Okay, let me put this into perspective for you:
      As stated in my prior posts I’ve written, “I don’t know the whole story”, “Re-train the officers and call it a day”. So to say I want the officers careers ruined is nonexistent. I have also stated, “when the criminal was brandishing the gun he should have been shot on the spot”, He’s resisting arrest, taser his a@@, not once but many, many, many times”, throw away the key or give him the chair or 25 years to life.
      It should be obvious I do not support criminals in any way. What I am advocating is for the officers to do their jobs. Emotions can and will make you regret your actions in a situation long gone however had the officers followed their training, they wouldn’t expose themselves to scrutiny. Procedures are in place to protect the officers as well.
      Bottom line, they went way overboard.
