Cain Tells Staff: I‘m ’Reassessing’ If I Should Stay in Race

(The Blaze/AP) — Herman Cain’s Iowa campaign chairman is telling The Associated Press that the candidate is reassessing his presidential campaign a day after an Atlanta businesswoman alleged a 13-year extramarital affair with the Republican. And National Review now has a transcript of a call with Cain where he admits the same thing.

Steve Grubbs says that on a conference call with senior staff early Tuesday, Cain said the allegations have taken an emotional toll on his family but that he’s moving ahead with the campaign.

Still, Grubbs said Cain told his staff he would be reassessing how to move forward given that the allegations have damaged his fundraising.

The Iowa chairman said Cain still planned to deliver a foreign policy speech in Michigan later Tuesday at Hillsdale College in Michigan.

The news was first reported by National Review’s Robert Costa, who was on the call and added that Cain will make a final decision “over the next several days.”

National Review has also published a transcript of Cain’s comments on the call. We’ve included them below and added emphasis where necessary:

“Obviously, you’re all aware of this recent firestorm that hit the news yesterday,” Cain began, his voice somber. “First thing I want to do is say to you what I have said publicly: I deny those charges, unequivocally. Secondly, I have known this lady for a number of years. And thirdly, I have been attempting to help her financially because she was out of work and destitute, desperate. So, thinking that she was a friend — and I have helped many friends — I now know that she wasn’t the friend that I thought she was. But it was a just a friendship relationship.”

“That being said, obviously, this is cause for reassessment,” he continued. “As you know, during the summer we had to make some reassessments based upon our financial situation. We were able to hang in there; we reassessed the situation and kept on going. We also did a reassessment after the Iowa straw poll and we made another reassessment after the Florida straw poll. When the previous two accusations, false accusations, came about, we made another assessment. The way we handled those was, we continued on with our schedule. We made an assessment about what was going to happen to our support. But our supporters, and even some folks that we didn’t have as supporters, they stood with us, and they showed it not only in terms of their verbal support, they showed it in terms of their dollars.”

“Now, with this latest one, we have to do an assessment as to whether or not this is going to create too much of a cloud, in some people’s minds, as to whether or not they would be able to support us going forth,” Cain said.

“Over the next several days, we are going to continue with the schedule as usual,” he said. “I’ve got a major speech tonight at Hillsdale College on national security and foreign policy, and I will deliver it with vim, vigor, and enthusiasm. And then tomorrow we’ve got some media appearances scheduled. So we’re going to continue until we complete our assessment over the next several days.”

“But if a decision is made, different than to plow ahead, you all will be the first to know,” he said. “So until that time, I want to continue to thank you all for your support, thank you for your prayers. It’s taken an emotional toll, but the people in the audience tonight will never know it.”

“It’s also taken a toll on my wife and family, as you would imagine,” he concluded. “Any time you put another cloud of doubt, unfortunately, in the court of public opinion, for some people, you’re guilty until proven innocent. And so, the public will have to decide whether they believe her or whether they believe me. That’s why we’re going to give it time, to see what type of response we get from our supporters.”

The reported second thoughts come on the heels of yet another set of allegations against the candidate involving inappropriate relationships with women.

Cain has fiercely denied wrongdoing in all of the cases, and sought to project business as usual even as his team worked behind the scenes to stem the fallout of the latest allegation. It came just five weeks before the Iowa caucuses that kick off the state-by-state voting process for the GOP nomination.

The admission by Grubbs comes after J.D. Gordon, Cain’s spokesman, said “Yes” when asked on Tuesday whether Cain is definitely staying in the race.

This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

I hope Mr. Cain stays in the race. If he does’nt, so be it. Those females who are bringing the alligations of sexual misconduct should be made to prove there alligations. Failure to; charges should filed and punishments delt out. Not just to the Women but to those who put them up to it.

Mr. Cain is gone, this reassessment is an announcement to the coming announcement. He knew he was a goner when this last story broke, he’ll be lucky to save his marriage and he knows it! Cain admits he was on the road allot, I never heard any stories where he took his wife with him. I haven‘t heard enough facts to rule him guilty but I have heard enough to indict him for trial if it were a crime but it’s not! There is enough solid evidence in phone calls to the Atlanta women for me not to consider to vote for him, I can’t vote for a Slick Willie! Slick Willie should have been removed from office over Monica! Private my butt! The Presidency should have a high standard!

If Cain drops out, I would like to see him get his lawyer on what’s really behind all this. Cain could do alot of good if a thouough investigation ‘proves foul play’ on the accusers and the people who promoted it. At that point, do the public service of trial to all involved. Not even to prove his innocence, as ‘We are what we are in the eyes of God, nothing more, nothing less’, but to bring all violaters to justice. Then again, there is the pitiful likes of Eric Holder. This country needs cleaning, starting at the top. Sad. Very sad, indeed.

If this woman IS slandering Herman (and his one eyed German) then she COULD BE SUED for defamation of character, just like the LAST WOMAN could have been sued.
Legal action WAS NOT taken against the last woman, and it wont be taken against THIS woman either. Ask yourself WHY is that?
In the words of Mittens Romney “I‘m running for office for Pete’s sake” I can‘t have any hussies comin’ out of the woodwork.
Set all of the “womanizing” allegations aside.
The man is NOT qualified to run for President.
He has ZERO foreign policy experience.
He had ZERO economical foresight to see the financial crisis that is now upon us.
He even LAUGHED at the ones trying to warn of the coming financial crisis.
He doesn’t even know the DIFFERENCE between the US Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. He was chastising people to “re-read the Constitution” when he began quoting the Declaration of Independence.
      The list goes on.
Only ONE man has overwhelming support of the military, Independents, and recovering liberals. Even more than Ohmamma.
Only ONE candidate has been warning of the financial crisis for over 25 years.
Only ONE candidate has stood alone in defense of the Constitution, and upheld the oath he took with honor.
Only ONE candidate has been not only consistent and trustworthy, he has been baggage free.
We are standing on the edge of a financial and societal cliff. Don’t get fooled again America.

      @encinumb:
      1) “Weiner was man enough to admit fault”…wow. To quote you yet again, what are you smoking and where can I get some. The male(can’t dignify him by calling him a man) admitted he had done wrong and stepped down in disgrace only after the PHYSICAL evidence against him had grown to avalanche proportions. The timeline is there as is the historical record. Which brings me to
      2) All we have at this point against Cain are claims of women, at least one of which with an unsavory background. You intimated a hypocritical mindset in those who support Cain, in your argument to meand yet you demonstrate an ideological hypocracy of your own in not applying the same standards of evidence in assuming Cain’s guilt. In other words, you were still claiming knowledge of insider information (pathetic attempt) that would clear Weiner’s name not only after the physical evidence had been found, but even AFTER Weiner himself had admitted guilt. On the other hand, as I mentioned earlier you’ve made up your mind and are willling to bash an opponent of a differing ideology on the basis of claims.
This in itself indicates a pattern of behavior with you. You are indeed an ideologue with little or no ability to think critically or debate effectively; only make hit-and-run claims on a website. In short, you make those on your side look pathetic by your association, if you are representative of the left’s mindset and inability to argue effectively.

@Jefferson: I’m not defending Cain. I don’t know if these allegations are true or not….BUT, I do know a little bit about defamation/slander, because my husband and I were recently the on the defending end of just such a lawsuit. Federal Anti-SLAPP legislation has become strict with regards to these suits, and those who bring them. Several states have added to the Federal Statute and placed even more restrictions on plaintiffs. In our state, I recently read an article by an attorney that gave a serious warning to plaintiffs attorney’s looking to file these types of suits. The burden of proof seems to be largely on the plaintiffs in these cases and the consequences can be very costly. Even attorney’s are feeling the heat from courts, from my understanding. I know the bar is set very high now, and because of this I don’t necessarily think the lack of suits filed against these women speaks to their credibility…..and, on a side note…..after almost 3 yrs, the suit against us was dismissed…..but it cost us dearly.

@MTcountrygirl Name one flip-flop for Ron Paul. Just ONE! You cannot state ‘untruths’ (aka lies) and think you’ll get away with it. Your ‘pork’ strawman argument doesn’t hold water. There is money allocated and if you don’t take it, it goes into the black hole. You seem to forget Paul has a constituency with needs and he was elected to fullfill those needs. You confuse a congressman’s job to obtain funding for sound projects with wasteful spending such as bridges to nowhere and private airports.
Ron Paul wrote and submitted HR 1146, The American Sovereignty Restoration Act, an act to withdraw the US from the UN and kick the UN out of the US, from 1996 to the present day and Congress has IGNORED it – that‘s not Paul’s fault. Ron Paul had been trying to get Congress to audit the Fed since 1983 and was ignored until just this year when they finally DID a partial audit.

I hope he stays in for one reason… all of the other Republican candidates SAY they stand with Israel.

Cain was the only one with the guts to DO it.

That is kind of TRUE leadership and REAL courage we need… not just words. When Bachmann, Santorum or Gingritch actually back up their pledge with action, they are just letting their alligator mouths overload their hummingbird a$$es.

How deeply troubling if these women are lying to destroy a decent man. The bigger the lie and the more you repeat it, the more the folk will believe it.

There are too many unanswered questions:

Can this woman produce hotel receipts or dates/times of liaisons?

Do her friends back her story?

Does Cain’s schedule match up to her accusations?

    Where are the investigative journalists?

Why was this not in the National Inquirer prior to this? As disgusting as they are, they break stories like this long before all the others.

This is why good people won’t run for public office and leave it to the political hacks. This is why we are stuck w/the party’s picks. It makes it too hard on the families of those who actually have good ideas.

I think the administration saw him as possibly dismantling a strong segment of Obama’s base but he was pretty much ignored until he started to climb in the polls. Then came the first accusations, although they did some damage, he was still a contender. They had to take another shot at him to get rid of the competition. There are certainly many questions these accusations have raised but he was certainly aware of this latest woman. Does it make sense to push on with this waiting to come out? Simple truths, really aren’t that simple after all (except intellectually). Since “truth” is relative to the ‘excuse’ for socialists.

Everyone knows there is a double standard for politicians, if it isn’t a more complex paradigm than that. GOP has to uphold the appearance of propriety, while the socialists only have to be base and animalistic. Something they have very little difficulty doing.

It appears that this woman kept records of their alleged affair, so she was out to destroy him from the start. Cain is a liberal Christian (an oxymoron) or at the very least he attends a liberal church, so I doubt he has heavenly help to overcome sexual temptation. Please don’t brag, lest you too be proven weak. All men need help where seductive women are concerned, especially those who travel a lot.

If I was a Cain supporter, I’d like to hear from his own mouth how he met this woman, and how long he has been “helping her financially.” If he did this, he needs to come clean so he and his wife can find healing.

In fact, I would not be surprisede if this is product of GOP establishment and not any candidate in particular. I wouldn’t be so quick to blame the left – the establishment is every bit as dirty.

If Herman Cain withdraws, AMERICA is in deep tapioca, folks. PRAY, people! Intercede for GOD’s will to be done here.

Everyone else has a personal agenda and/or are already “owned”.

Who do you think funded Cain’s initial campaign? If you’re answer was the Koch Brothers you were right! Nobody ‘owned’ by those guys I’m sure.

      Are you really that naive?

Maybe it’s just me, but I believe in a God who’s will can be accomplished with or without Herman Cain. If he’s guilty and lying I definitely want to know about those character flaws, because I’m sick and tired of overlooking them in either parties candidate. If he’s innocent then he needs to fight tooth and nail to show that character also…God however, needs none of us to accomplish his will and once we understand that, then His will is a more recognizable place for us to be.

America is ALREADY in trouble – Cain is NO savior. Doesn’t matter who is Prez – we are going to pay the piper sooner than later.

Have any of you considered that God is going to give you the leader that you choose? How can you say that God will intervene when he let the voice of the people select Obama as president? He let the voice of the people choose a bad president.

What we should really be asking is whether the voice of the people is a wise and prudent voice? As a whole, I don’t have much faith in the voice of the people – especially reading The Blaze forums. As with other civilizations in the past that have fallen, we are ripe for destruction.

As a true believer, I believe that the turnaround we want to see won’t happen until the Savior comes again. It is not about politics anymore. It’s about purifying our hearts and minds.

Such a shame. I really liked Herman. He is likeable, charismatic, and has great ideas. Not to mention he would definately get some of the black votes “ off the planatation ” as he says. I also think he should not have gone on CNN, that was a huge mistake.

ya i liked some of what herman was offering, and i thought he could have been a good candidate… but a smart winner of the primary is going to ask marco rubio or allan west to be vp, and either of those men would be great at connecting and getting across conservative ideas to those communities and telling them that they can make it

Cain’s huge mistake was not being able to keep it in his pants.
