Navy Announces New Material to Make Warheads Even Deadlier

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced this week that it has developed a new material for warhead casings that will increase the lethal effect and likelihood of hit on an enemy target.
This material — high-density reactive material (HDRM) — would, according to an ONR press release (via Science Daily), replace steel without compromising strength or design. HDRM integrates explosives with the warhead casing and allows for chemical release after impact, increasing its lethal effect.
“Recent testing and demonstrations have consistently shown that the new casings can be integrated into naval missiles and are durable enough to withstand both high acceleration of missile launch and the forces exposed to during the detonation event,” said Dr. Clifford Bedford, ONR’s energy conversion program officer, in the press release announcement August 10. “The HDRM fragments can penetrate a target’s skin, followed by a rapid and sustained combustion/explosion.”
The press release states that HDRM has the strength of aluminum alloys but the density of steel, which is important for existing weapons to maintain accuracy of a hit.

Uh, … Why?
When’s the last time we bombed an actual enemy? (oh Libyans, sure … Al Qaeda, no, never, never.)
Does this pass muster under our Rules of Engagement?

Deterrent. No one has used any of the deadly weapons we’ve developed since WWII. You have no evidence to present otherwise so stop with the keyboard cowboy comments.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 12:03pmUriel you said it right. Time to use weapons for what they were intended for: Enemy combatants. Annihilate and leave. “War” is now nothing more than a leveling of civilians NOT the actual aggressors. The mightiest army and we didn’t wipe the CHIcoms out in Nam. We haven’t wiped out Jihadist, oh come on …the will is not there. A handful are making millions/billions, that is what these so called ‘wars of freedom” are really about.. War has now been debased to making money: bought with BLOOD of US soldiers. The US army is not the defender of “freedom” for US citizens, it is merely a “world police” for the Bilderbergers. An abuse of the US military by the politicians. Time to remove abusive politicians. They are dregs of humanity.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 12:14pmSorry to disagree with you all, but anything to keep our military ahead of those who want us dead is a good thing. I want our military to have every possible advantage over our enemies or potential enemies. My uh-why response is to why would they reveal it.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 12:20pmPrecisely — Our weapons are really for deterrent – a little known just recently revealed fact came out last year that Russia planned a nuclear strike on China and that the Nixon admin threatened the Soviets with a full scale retaliatory strike and mind you…. we were not friendly at all with China at the time…. the Soviets backed down.
Quit frankly we should’ve carpet bombed the entire Tora Bora region with low yield tactical nukes after 9/11 and destroyed the entire region, it would‘ve been a firm show of strength to the terrorists and the world that we just don’t play games, there would‘nt have been a 10 year way there and most likely Saddam would’ve been far more willing to surrender and have the US and Allies go into Iraq and remove him as well. People complain about how bad we were for dropping the two nukes on Japan, but when you look at the long dragged out wars in Iraq/Afghan, it might’ve been better just to have gotten it over and done with, using a few small nukes… the world hates us now anyway, so dropping them 10 years ago would’ve have made the world hate us anymore, we would’ve saved near 5,000 US soldiers lives and over a trillion in spending. The terrorists would all be hiding in their caves dying of radiation poisoning and the world would be a lot safer then it is today.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 4:50pmThe recent announcements by the military involving new weapons systems is due to a request by the Joint Chiefs of Staff to get these new weapons completed sooner rather than later. There are a few more weapon systems that I can not share right now that will be announced in the coming months once the final testing is completed. I know of two that are game changers and when announced it will rile up the Chinese.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 6:50pm@Inversiontheory: absolutely correct. There are leaks, unfortunately, but generally the stuff that’s put out there is either one- or two-generations ago technology or things like this that, even if you know the general idea, you still don’t know how to make it. The constituent materials and manufacturing process; now _that’s_ what you need to keep under wraps.
