Navy Commander Under Fire for Raunchy Videos Shown to Crew

CNN:

The Navy has opened an investigation into how a series of raunchy videos, full of sexual innuendo and anti-gay remarks, were produced and shown to the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise while on deployment supporting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Navy Commander Under Fire for Raunchy Videos Shown to CrewNavy spokesman Cmdr. Chris Sims said the videos, which were shown to the crew in 2006 and 2007, are “inappropriate.”

Excerpts from the videos and descriptions of their content were first published Saturday by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia.

The videos on the paper’s website, reviewed by CNN, feature a man identified by two Navy officials and The Virginian-Pilot as Capt. Owen Honors, who at the time was the executive officer, or second-in-command, of the Enterprise.

He recently took command of the carrier, winning one of the most coveted assignments in the U.S. Navy, which has only 11 aircraft carriers.

Honors is shown cursing along with other members of his staff in an attempt to demonstrate humor, according to videos.

There are also anti-gay slurs, simulated sex acts, and what appear to be two female sailors in a shower together.

Here are excerpts from the videos (content warning applies):

The Virginian-Pilot:

The videos were part of what Honors, 49, called “XO Movie Night.”

“They were the XO’s project,” said one former Enterprise sailor, a ship video-grapher who on one occasion was asked to help in the filming. “He was the one coming up with scripts and the jokes. He was the one planning it.”

The Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, is set to deploy overseas this month. The videos raise serious questions about Honors’ judgment, especially while the carrier is under way, said another sailor, an officer aboard the Enterprise who was also there when the videos were being shown.

“When the ship pulls away from that pier, he’s it,” the officer said. “To me, that’s scary.”

It’s unclear why the videos recently resurfaced, although one sailor who spoke to the newspaper said they remain on at least one shipboard computer.

This is ‘newsworthy’ because the left is looking for any and all reason to marginalize the military…to say we’re bullies, insensitive, mean, gay bashing, etc. This begins the justification for special treatment of homosexuals in the military. It’s never about equality with special interest…it’s always about power grabbing. Really who gives a rip if you’re gay? Just pick up your gun and do your job…oh and don’t touch my junk.

Uh, why exact is this news worthy? I’m I missing something here! An XO with a sense of humor…that’s great…rare but great. But news worthy???? Even better, now he is a Cdr with a sense of humor. Are we suppose to be offended or outraged? What’s the big deal…have you listened to a rap song recently, talk abut degrading and offensive. This was actually funny in spots. Really guys, come on! I applaud Capt. Honors for attempting to do SOMETHING to raise morale while deployed. Some may not like the content of the video, but I’m pretty sure it was also VERY WELL KNOWN what kind of video this was going to be. I don’t think this was the first one. I wish on any of MY deployments, my supervision would have been as willing to have fun as this man, I’ll bet you his crew did VERY well out there. All I can say is this. We want people to be tolerant of our religions, political views, etc., and allow us to be the Christian Conservatives that (most) of us are. But yet, we are not willing to accept ANYTHING that WE don’t like! It’s time to accept that we ARE going to be offended sometimes. Just accept it, and move on. No one should be in Honor’s position for an attempt at humor.

These people for the most part are stuck on a ship that is out to sea, serving our country. While I don’t agree with the content of the movie. I can certainly understand that cutting loose once in a while is acceptable.
As long as it didn’t interfere with normal operations of the ship and no one was hurt in the making of this movie.
People go to watch this kind of crap all day and night. I don’t blame them for wanting to let off steam. I think they could have found a better way, but I am not on the ship.
They serve and protect our country without question, they risk their lives from what I hear everyday. So again while I don’t condone or agree with it. It is their right to watch or not.
To all the fine men and women serving in our military in all the branches. I salute you and wish nothing but the best.

Sailors are notoriously “Salty” in their brand of humor, and the content here is no more offensive than any PG-13 movie in the theaters today. We should remember that this is a warship where warriors risk their lives and sometimes give their lives on our behalf. The stress of his job warrents a special dispensation from the PC-Police.

I can live with it. While I don’t condone the movie, I can see that the person that made the movie was trying to boost morale. Morale in the service can keep you alive or get you killed. From what I understand people on the ship were free to watch it or not. Just like going to a movie in civilian life. If you don‘t like the movie then don’t watch it or walk out. But don’t sit through the whole movie then gripe about it. That’s being a bigot in my book.

I’ve served in the Army for nine years, currently going to school to become a Chaplain. All I gotta say is that if people think this is bad, they should see some of the videos that I and the officers of my infantry company made while we were in Iraq.

The reputation of an officer is not just how P.C. he is, but how he leads. Sure, some ***** with a rules book shoved up his fourth point of contact will be the pride of the P.C. patrol, but let’s see him lead his men. If the guy can keep up morale, and run a tight ship (the Enterprise is the cream of the crop in the Navy), then I see no problem with a little humor like this.

Oh, and anyone who thinks that the military should be prissy can kiss my purple heart tattoo… it’s right over my bullet wound… one responsible for quite a few jokes from my fellow soldiers.

It just takes one mistake for things to goe really, really bad. (Read up on the fire onboard the U.S.S. Forestall)
We would spend lots of time, cracking “your momma” jokes. Pulling pranks, cussing and extreme liberal use of the “F word” It was a form of stress relief. One of the key roles of command is to keep your sons and daughters from cracking under stress, and if bathroom humor, works then so be it. I support the actions of the X.O. onboard the U.S.S, Enterprise in his efforts to maintain a high state of readiness and moral in his command.

I’m a retied naval officer who spent 30 yrs with 1/3 of that time as an enlisted man. So don‘t tell me I don’t know the enlisted view or the officer view. I can’t believe it! I’ve NEVER seen such crap coming from senior naval officers. In my entire time (up until 1999) this type of stuff would NOT have been tolerated on any ship I served on and certainly NOT endorsed or tollerated by any Commanding Officer or XO that I served with. It wasn’t done then because it would never have ever been concieved of! ….Horrible – just horrible. Our precious navy is better than this.. For those who say, “oh well the rappers do it”…naval officers are NOT rappers and should conduct themselves by a higher standard… make that MUCH higher standard. I may not know the navy very well, only having served 30yrs, but I NEVER witnessed a fellow officer insulting/rediculing/offending a person who was believed to be gay, a female or a minority. And if an officer witnessed an enlisted man doing it they would have been reprimanded. Does that really seem so strange? Some of you are all hailing these idiots with, “good job”, “blowing off steam” and “sense of humor”..BS! They are acting “unbecoming”….

My career was in medicine, and nearly all emergency workers (medical, fire & police) I came into contact with had developed a sense of humor that would likely appall most “civilians.” It was a way to cope with the stress we faced on a daily basis. I have no doubt but what the same applies to the military.

      PantCor66,

As a new arrival to the commenting portion of this fair website, I do not know your history and views nor how much weight and gravity they may hold. However, in respect of our service, I will gladly afford your opinions and favor a courtly conversation about this matter. Before we start slamming this officer with an Article 133 (of which I was concerned you were eluding to “They are acting “unbecoming”") I would ask to what platform you had served on and in what capacity. That being said, viewing the short clip provided on this website, I view very little that was in complete distaste. Expletives are used on a daily, if not hourly basis aboard ships as well as ashore. Finding humor in the diversity of the F word and depicting humorous situations involving shower scenes and a parrot are not that out of line for what they were intended. Humor. As for ridiculing a shipmate for his or her sexual preferences, race or gender, you have completely missed ships movement on this topic. In private or semi-private conversations everyone partakes in these comment to some degree. The primary argument I have is that no outsider (someone not currently serving aboard the ship or installation) should interrupt the stability of life aboard that vessel by interjecting his or her political correctness opinions over the whole crew. And yes I was concerned that you had spent your entire career as a TAR and/or completely in CONUS.

If you are offended then you ought to head out to the front lines of the war and hear the language the real fighting men use while protecting you and your freedom to be offended every single day while you sit at home and complain about anything and everything you don’t agree with. Get a life and find something else to get offended over. It will be a real shame if this guy loses his command over something as harmless as this. You were not forced nor asked to watch the video by anyone who was supposed to be involved in an in house video meant to lighten the mood of hard working sailors who had likely been at sea for months at the time.

I see no problem with these movies. These are men at war, men away from their families. You people who have a problem with this need to grow up.

MissDiane1966: Unless you have served in the military, I do not think you have the proper perspective to judge or criticize. The good Captain was just taking part in the age old practice of crude banter that has taken place since the inception of our military. It is bad enough to be separated from loved ones and family for extended periods of time and often being shot at so this type of thing takes place in order to boost moral and lift spirits. Political correctness is a disease that is slowly working its way into a place where it does not belong. The military is a volunteer force, therefore, if one finds crude jokes and crass banter to be objectionable, get out but leave the military alone to deal with protecting our country and its interests as well as dealing with moral and welfare of its troops.

Excuse me people, but I don’t see a problem here. Sounds to me like a little XO fun on a long tour at sea, so what?

The men and women of the navy serve hornorably, and I don’t want to in any way diminish their commitment or the importance of their work, but the plain fact is that since none of the people we are fighting have a navy of their own, they are not “on the front line of that war.”

I am currently in the Navy, with 20years of service, 16 at sea. I guess unless you spend that kind of time deployed you can’t appreciate what this XO was trying to do. Crew spirits can be hard to maintain away from family. Why does society continue to try and put a face on a fighting force that is inconsistent with the objective of having armed services.

      boomersrents,
      You said it perfectly…

      Thank you for your service.

WHY DID THEY WAIT 5 YEARS TO SAY SOMETHING? Is this yet another distraction thrown at the people? Do any of these fools have any idea how man disiplin problems, suisides and other problems this stress relif prevented? No I guess not. You would have to live through the stress of combat or shipboard duty to understand. Most who are complaining have never experienced any thing but their own bowel movements. The main reason this was brought up now was the repeal of DADT. They want to punish any one that was opposed.

      MISSDIANE,
Captain Honors was simply trying to ease tensions onboard a vessel with crew that is deployed for months on end. As a Marine who has served at sea I have no problem with what Honors has done. It was a morale booster. There used to be certain ceremonies at sea, such as sailors becoming Shellbacks, Blue Noses, Golden Dragons, Order of the Rock and such but others outside of the naval traditions have cried so much we cant have such ceremonies anymore because it is considered hazing or whatever they want to call it. We used to be able to jump off the deck but now have to swim from the welldeck because mambypambies/media cry and constantly show videos because they want nothing else but to demoralize the military. Welcome to the real world its not all fantasy, lovey dovey and perfect.

My oldest daughter is on the verge of making a six to eight year commitment with the US Navy. She will join a long line of Navy vets (on both sides of her family) that include KIAs, Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipients and Annapolis grads.

You don’t get to skipper a bird farm without exhibiting a high level of competence. If Owens is the best man to complete missions while getting my kiddo home in the condition her mom and I sent her, then that’s the man I want at the helm. If he is less than PC in his deportment, then oh well. Her delicate sensibilities be d@mned. If she’s gets offended in the process, she’ll get over it. If he offends civilians, then that’s too d@mn bad too.

Maybe an overly sensitive culture is what you get when gays and women are allowed to serve beside men who are expected to kill and could themselves be killed. How offensive would someone’s actions be if they were recorded bludgeoning the enemy to death in hand to hand combat? In the larger scheme of things this is nothing.I’m glad someone in the military still has a sense of humor, even if it offends some women and girly men.
