Navy SEALs Unload on Obama Over Politicizing bin Laden Raid: ‘A No Brainer’

Navy SEALs Criticize Obama for Polticizing bin Laden RaidThis post originally appeared on Business Insider by Brett LoGiurato.

It’s been a year to the day since President Obama announced the heroic mission of the Navy SEAL Team Six that killed Osama bin Laden. But Navy SEALs aren’t taking too kindly to Obama reminding everyone about it in the past few days.

Surprise, surprise: Today is all about politics.

Current serving and ex-Navy SEALs spoke with The Daily Mail for a story published last night, and boy did they have a lot to say. A sampling: Some said the mission was a no-brainer for any president. Some accused Obama of taking credit for their work. Some said it was an attempt to use them as “ammunition” for his re-election campaign.

Here’s Ryan Zinke, a former 23-year SEAL that is now a Republican state Senator from Montana:

“The decision was a no brainer. I applaud him for making it but I would not overly pat myself on the back for making the right call. I think every president would have done the same. He is justified in saying it was his decision but the preparation, the sacrifice — it was a broader team effort.”

For someone not currently engulfed in politics on the other side, let’s go to Clint Bruce, who “gave up the chance of an NFL career to serve as a SEAL officer,” according to the Mail:

“We were extremely surprised and discouraged by the publicity because it compromises the ability of those guys to operate. It’s a waste of time to speculate about who would and wouldn’t have made that decision. It was a symphony of opportunity and intelligence that allowed this administration to give the green light. We want to acknowledge that they made that decision.

“Politicians should let the public know where they stand on national security but not in the play-by-play, detailed way that has been done recently. The intricacies of national security should not become part of stump speeches.”

The debate continues to rage over Obama’s campaign ad, in which Bill Clinton voices over the narrative that Obama made the tough decision that led to the death of the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

Here is the mistake Obama made, though, which makes it so controversial and ripe for attack: The speculation over whether Mitt Romney would have made the same call.

It’s a delicate balance: On one hand, Romney is on record saying that it was not “worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person.” On the other, how much credit does a politician — even a President — get for the operation?

Romney, for his part, said yesterday that “any thinking American” would have ordered the killing. Today, he issued a statement:

“Today marks the one year anniversary of the mission that brought Osama bin Laden to justice. That mission was the culmination of nearly a decade of hard work and sacrifice by our men and women in the military and intelligence communities. I commend all those who planned and conducted the bin Laden raid, and I applaud President Obama for giving the go ahead for the mission.

Expect this political back-and-forth to continue as part of the foreign policy debate up through the final days leading up to the election.

obama doesn’t have the courage of those that did the job. Just a loud mouth braggard trying to take credit for what others did. No leadership shown by him. Anyone would have made the call to get him. Only a few answered the call and got it done— it dam sure wasn’t him that got it Done!

They had to go call the president off the golf course and get him into that Situation Room an hour and a half before the attack so he was there for the photo-op. And if you’ll notice, if you’ve seen the picture of Obama looking with the deer-in-the-headlight eyes at the monitor supposedly of the op taking place, you see a golf shirt under that jacket that they put on him.

A parade of former Bush administration officials went on the Sunday political shows to talk up waterboarding and claim a measure of credit for bagging Osama Bin Laden.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney said waterboarding – which the Obama administration nixed as torture – “probably” played a role in tracking down Bin Laden and should be brought back.
“It was a good program. It was legal program. It was not torture,” Cheney told Fox News Sunday. “I would strongly recommend we continue it.”…
…on Saturday, former Bush chief of staff Andrew Card criticized Obama’s visit to Ground Zero as grandstanding.
“I think he has pounded his chest a little too much,” Card told the German newspaper Der Spiegel. “He can take pride in it, but he does not need to show it so much.”
Card oversaw one of history’s worst-conceived presidential victory laps: when his boss donned a flight suit to jet to an aircraft carrier draped with a banner announcing “Mission Accomplished” in 2003, just five weeks into the Iraq war that still rages.))

The reason President George W. Bush never took credit for military accomplishments was, he was letting the Generals do whatever they pleased. He was passive and gave up his leadership responsibilities as the Civilian Commander In Chief under the United States Constitution.

It just never occurred to him that he had done anything difficult. Because he never had to.

He just needed to “Stay the Course,” keep the loyal citizenry in fear while adding Kellogg Brown & Root surge planners to the Debt Building speed dial. The Administration was persuaded to double Pentagon spending levels (mainly with off-budget tricks they are now blaming others for) in just five years!

So in short..MONACNE/SLEAZY HIPPO is comparing a 17 minute propganda film and a campaign ad both commissioned by the Obama capaign to a few former Bush administration members appearing on political commentary shows (where comments are expected…but not in MONACNE’s world apparently) and reminding everyone that it was AFTER Khalid Sheik Mohammed was waterboarded that he started singing like a canary and gave us the first evidence we had of the courier that led us to the compound in Abbottabad. The same courier was confirmed by KSM’s successor al-Libbi in 2006. This courier and his associates used aliases and nicknames which made them difficult to track. Eventually this was accomplished and Obama was dragged in off the golf course by Leon Panetta to say “yes” to the operation he handed off to Admiral McRaven (read: the fall guy should the operation go south).
Here’s what the Obama campaign ad politicizing the OBL killing says:

“Suppose [the SEAL team had] been captured or killed. The downside would have been horrible for [Obama]. But he reasoned: I cannot in good conscience do nothing.”- Yes..you read or heard that correctly. Obama‘s instinct was to be concerned about the political fallout that he potentially could suffer rather than the fact that he’s been presented with Bin Laden and what do with that.

In my next post I‘ll offer what Secretary Gates said about Obama and Bidens’ handling of the operation after it was made public that OBL was dead.

After the death of OBL at Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune, Defense Secretary Robert Gates offered that although the agreement between admin members on the bin Laden operation was to keep all aspects of the operation classified, those close to Obama, including Joe Plugs Biden, didn’t adhere to that agreement.

After the leaks went public, Gates said the following:

“Frankly, a week ago Sunday, in the Situation Room, we all agreed that we would not release any operational details from the effort to take out bin Laden. That all fell apart on Monday, the next day.

We are very concerned about the security of our families – of your families and our troops, and also these elite units that are engaged in things like that. And without getting into any details… I would tell you that when I met with the team… they expressed a concern about that, and particularly with respect to their families. ”

A month later, Gates resigned. Tthree short months later in Eastern Afghanistan, a helicopter was shot down , killing 31 special ops troops, most of them from the SEALs unit that killed OBL.

It was a wet behind the ears senator with no military experience, and no foreign policy experience that told GEN Dave Petreaus that Iraq could not be won. Guess what? We won that one.

During the election, same wet behind the big ears senator claimed Iraq to be the wrong war at the wrong time, and Afghanistan to be the right war. Once elected, he sent the surge to Afghanistan to do nation building. Guess how that one is going? Unlike Bush, Obama does not have the left wing media on every night showcasing Cindy Shehand and code pink, or the body counts. Nation building aint going well in Afghanistan, and the same contractors are still making a buck. So how is your Obama any better? He hand picked Gen Stan Mchrystal to handle things, and when he did his press even with Rolling Stone, who did Obama call for? Yep, the same guy that won Iraq. Go figure.

The CIA under Bush and Chenney started the hunt for OBL, it was never called off. It took years to find him, and your Obama did nothing new or different to empower our special ops and CIA. He just happend to be at the helm when they did find him, and they about had to twist his arm off to get the OK to do the mission. Kind of like the shooting of somali pirates that the Navy did on their own, then Obama took credit for.

What’s being filtered out now is that Panetta had to drag Obama back off the golf course after “sleeping on it” for sixteen hours. Admiral McRaven did the work Obama should have been doing and the logistics and operational details were handled by subordinate officers.

Here‘s what this latest ad of Obama’s says…

“Suppose [the SEAL team had] been captured or killed. The downside would have been horrible for [Obama]. But then Obama supposedly reasons: I cannot in good conscience do nothing.” In other words…Obama was worried about the political fallout of a failed mission over the actual goals of the mission. He needn’t have worried…in the summer of 2011, 25 SEALs and aircrew were killed in a helicopter crash and the media didn’t point any fingers at him at all. Obama and Biden had spent a couple of weeks advertising SEAL Team 6 before hand.
Here’s what Secretary Gates said about that:
“Frankly, a week ago Sunday, in the Situation Room, we all agreed that we would not release any operational details from the effort to take out bin Laden. That all fell apart on Monday, the next day.

Mr. Carter made a more difficult call to rescue American hostages in Iran. Upon a thorough review of the raid, he asked about the possibility of American hostage casualties, and was told, “Yes”, the possibility was there that the raid would endanger their lives and some might die. He gave the order to proceed. In one of the worst Presidencies in our history, Mr. Carter actually made his finest decision after careful consideration, and was NOT on the golf course when the mission was launched.

I wanted to second HELIOQUOIS comment on Jimmy Carter. Up until this one, worst president ever. BUT he did make a very tough call, it blew up in his face, but he didn’t try to pass the blame on to those around him (You know BO would have). So even in a tragedy, Carter did the right thing with the right attitude. The current White House occupant has no idea what it means to act presidential. Clueless.

All Obama said, was get him… and it took him forever to do that!! I commend these Navy Seals, who told it like it was! Our American Patriots.. something Obama clearly is not. Neil Armstrong, the first man to ever walk on the moon, has been forever humble and quiet about accomplishing such an amazing feat. Why? Because Armstrong felt it was a total team effort and balked at any chance for he himself to take credit for such a group achievement.

NoBama could learn a lesson from an American hero like Neil Armstrong.

Romney is on record saying that it was not “worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person….. Romney, for his part, said yesterday that “any thinking American” would have ordered the killing. ….. As for Romney he is who he is depending on the day and the audience. As for the Seals they should stick to their duty, respect the Commander and Chief and stay out of the political arena where they clearly are unarmed.

I agree with Romney that it wasn’t worth wasting too much of our time and resources on trying to find Bin Laden. I also agree with him that once he was found and all the cards in place, there was nothing to do but let them take him out. I don’t see any conflict between the two statements.

Retired SEALS have the same right to free speech which allows you to blab off incoherently.
As for you demanding they respect the CIC, well that is simply not going to happen. These men understand the sacrifice that SEALS make in order to be prepared to ful fill the demands of a mission such as the mission to kill Bin Laden. And it is EXTREMELY insulting to all of the military personnel who have been tracking Bin Laden for years. And Obama again exhibited his extremely narcissistic personality when he attempted make it appear as if he had to make such a difficult decision to give the green light. It’s always about Obama. He’s a moron.

JRook has a valid point. Military guys have their own codes. My best friend who did 20 in the Marines set me straight on this. He said Marines have a code among themselves which includes not making political statements. I would assume (and I say this knowing full well that I could wind up looking stupid if this is not the case) that the SEALs may well have a similar code. But they do own that operation, not the kid. the kid does not understand that you become a large person by owning your actions, not in talking them up. Poor kid, he’s desperate, and the more he talks, the sillier he looks.

We are the group that actually goes through a rational thought process in deciding who to vote for. We don’t start with an ideological position and decision and then back into the questions and facts to support it. Romney in 2008 stated clearly that he would not send American troops into Pakistan to get Bin Laden.
