The idea that the Communist authoritarians are Left and the Socialist authoritarians are right is pretty absurd since it leaves no dimension for classical liberalism, the philosophy that underlies American and has been revolutionary in its impact in driving globalization and the modern world. The far more logical designation is that the left stands for statism and collectivism (capturing the Nazis and the communists) and in an earlier age Monarchism while the right stands for limited government, free enterprise, and republican (small r) government.

The European model that you speak of seeks to control the individual, much like American progressives do today.

People commonly view the political spectrum of thought as a straight line with defined end on each side. In that view, there is a hard left, a hard right, and various points of moderation in between. It is this view that causes commentators and citizens alike to become confused as to where groups like the Nazis. Communists, Anarchists, Fascists, Progressives, Conservatives, etc fit across that spectrum. It is confusing because they don’t actually fit into that view.
Report Post »It would be more accurate to picture a sphere rather than a one dimensional straight line. At the north pole would be absolute despotism, at the south pole would be absolute anarchy, along the equator to the west would be progessivism, and to the east would be conservatism. Eventually if you go far enough east you end up in the west and vice versa. This is why communism, which is typically a far left ideology, and Nazi-ism , which is considered far right are actually one in the same. They represent the point at which left becomes right and right becomes left on the back of the sphere. Get it? However, both of these ideologies exist close to the north pole ( despotism) and not at the equator. Classic American political thought is much closer to the equator and is much narrower in width. It does not go all the way around the globe. Americans can generally handle shifts to the right or left in political thought without much national stress. However, we can not handle shifts toward either of the poles. It is when we move toward despotism or anarchy that the populace becomes unsettled. Hence the tea party. The tea party does not exist as a result of the election of a Democrat as president, or even as a result of electing a black man as President. It exists because the ideology of the administration is pushing us toward the north pole “despotism” and not because it is “left wing”. You have to see this in three dimensions and not just one for it to make sense….

Truth is fascism was very close in related to Communism. It is a part of the National Socialist party which is an extremely leftist term. Much like the Jefferson Democrats was what the Republican party is today, and how the Federalist/Whig party is much like the Democrat party is today, people often get the concept of left and right confused.
In case you don’t know Jefferson Democrats = more of a State controlled government with a limited Federal branch. Federalist/Whig party = a strong federal controlled government over the people.
The extreme right Republican party would fall under that category of the Libertarian party.Which is in fact the basis of what the Old Liberal party once was. The fascists as well as communists would fall more in the line with the Federalist party which claims that the federal government should have more control.

It’s a false assumption to attach Nazism to the right. It shares very little with Right/Conservative ideals but Nazism does share a lot of traits with the Left/Soacialism. Both are for centralized government control of the economy and business, anti-religion, actively repress criticism from the opposition, have cult like support for their leaders and hold government rights above individual rights.

Posted on October 30, 2010 at 9:15am@BETTERTHANTV – From a philosophical standpoint, 2 is correct. The Nazi party (National Socialists) were leftwing statists. But from a positional standpoint, you are correct. Those who are seen to be protecting the “status quo” from “revolutionaries” are always seen as rightwing vs leftwing. For example, when the Soviet Union was crumbling, there were those in the Communist Party there (not what you would call rightwingers, I would think) who wanted to keep things the same, and not dissolve the USSR. Those people were called the rightwingers by our media. So the difference between right and left really doesn’t have anything to do with political philosophy, it is more to do with maintenance of position.

Socialists will choose to remove the yellow ones from the bag to give to you and keep the rest for those in charge of the bag. Communists will take the whole bag and then give you a small portion of the red ones over a period of time. I always hoped it made it easier for the class to choose their own way ………………….. the colour is blue.
