NBC Hockey Commentator Turned Alleged Angry Hockey Dad Denies Hitting 12-Year-Old Player

Former Bruins Coach Charged with Assaulting 12 year old

Former Boston Bruins head coach and current NBC commentator Mike Milbury was charged Friday with assault and battery on a 12-year-old hockey player. In an interview with The Boston Globe Saturday, Milbury denies claims that he shook and threatened an opposing player of his son’s peewee hockey team after a December 9 game. Milbury was not arrested, but has been summonsed to Brookline District Court to answer the charges.

“Milbury picked up my son by the shirt, shook him, and was screaming and swearing at him,” the alleged victim’s mother told WBZ-TV. “Its horrific. You can’t put your hands on a child.”

The Brookline Police Department said that the boy was not hurt.

“Mike Milbury denies any allegations that there was an assault of any kind. He simply intervened in an altercation between his son and an opposing player. No one was struck, no one was injured and no one was threatened,” Millbury’s lawyer Dan Rabinovitz said in a statement.

The former head coach and Boston Bruins player for 12 seasons told the Globe that no one was hit and he was only watching out for his son, who was “verbally bullied by the other player for over two hours.”

“No one was punched, kicked, or assaulted in any way,” said Milbury. “I know the ‘Mad Mike’ image that I have and all that. I love the game, I’m passionate about it, but I don’t smack kids around. I grabbed the other kid by the sweater to stop a fight and, yeah, I swore at him. That’s it. That’s what I did.”

Milbury has been suspended from both NBC and CBC until the charges are sorted out.

CBS Boston reports on the incident:

Where‘s the kid’s Dad? Perhaps Mommy kicked him out after he attempted to discipline little Johnny. Another man-hating money hungry wench looking for an easy payday!

Milbury has a history of this kind of “temper” stuff. Frankly, his appearances on NBC hockey telecasts are always on the nasty side. His tough-guy personality is a big turn-off. I hope NBC does the right thing and cans this jerk.

I think that all of this is just plane “Horse Hockey”. No way would an NBC Sports Broadcaster jepardize his career by assaulting a minor.

It was a coach breaking up a fight, happens 10 times a year at this level.

Yup, sounds to me like an insanly over-protective mother who allows her son to get away with anything and then freaks out if/when the tables are turned on her perfect and angelic baby boy.

Our children are the only way we are going to restore this Obamafied nation. Can we please start to raise our boys to be MEN and our girls to be LADIES once again?

Do just a little research and you’ll find that Mr. Milbury has a history of anger management issues. He always has, and always will.

This is called Sports Rage/Parent Rage. You can see some parents going overboard trying to live through their children.

ok, you are an ________. This “guy” played and coached in the National Hockey League for decades! It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

What do you tell a 12 year old hockey player with 2 black eyes ? Nothing you told him twice already. Time to join a softball team.

You tell him “why have you not been wearing your protective helmet and cage mask?”. Part of what has ruined the game of hockey for me is kids grow up wearing over the top protection which results in a lack of respect for the game and the safely of each other within the game. They get to levels where the equipment is decreased by relaxed rules and the sticks are still high and the respect is still low.
BTW, twelve year olds do not get two black eyes playing hockey anymore, they can’t through the helmets and cages they wear.

How times have changed. When I was getting bullied by another kid at a soccer game, the only thing my dad did was ask me ” are you gonna hit him or what?”. He let me handle my problems, he didn’t pull the helicopter parent thing and solve my problem for me. Different generation I guess.

OK look, I know I have been on the back of the Blaze writer for bad stories, of which this is not one of them. But, stop, go back and read the headline. Let me quote: “NBC Hockey Commentator Turned Alleged Angry Hockey Dad Denies Hitting 12-Year-Old Player” I have seen better grammar from a grade school student. The Blaze readers do deserve better than this. Come on, you should at least be able to put a sentence together correctly.

Notice he’s being very careful to keep saying that nobody was punched or kicked. He doesn’t once deny that he picked a kid up by the shirt and shook him.

He‘s just trying to be clever with words by defending himself against charges that were never made because he can’t defend himself against the real charges. It’s the classic example of a straw man fallacy.

This guy has been a major douche bag for his entire career as both a player and a broadcaster anyway. Why would anyone in their right mind allow this guy coach kids? This idiot is the mentor you’re giving to impressionable kids? You might as well have Jerry Sandusky babysit for them too.

Let’s put it this way, if the kid was verbably abusing his son, and that’s why he stepped in, then the kid will never do it again, but if Milbury gets in trouble after this, then this kid will remain the bully that he is and probably escalate.
