NBC Says ‘No Offense Was Intended’ by Monkey Commercial That Aired Right After Gabby Douglas Won Olympic Gold

NBC said it meant “no offense” by a commercial involving a monkey on gymnastics rings that aired right after Gabby Douglas received her Olympic gold medal.

The commercial was an Olympic-themed ad for the upcoming NBC comedy “Animal Practice” and was specifically timed to run Thursday night after the women’s individual all-around gymnastics competition, the Associated Press reported. Just before the broadcast cut to commercial, NBC’s Bob Costas commented that Douglas — the first black woman to win the Olympic title — might serve as a role model for future generations.

“Much of America has fallen in love with Gabby Douglas,” Costas said. “Also safe to say that there are some young African-American girls out there who tonight are saying to themselves, `Hey, I’d like to try that, too.’”

NBC then went to the commercial featuring a small, grinning monkey on the rings. “Monkey” is considered a common slur against blacks.

“Gabby Douglas’ gold medal performance last night was an historic and inspiring achievement,” NBC Universal spokeswoman Liz Fischer said, according to the AP. “The spot promoting `Animal Practice,’ which has run three times previously, is one in a series with an Olympic theme, which have been scheduled for maximum exposure. Certainly no offense was intended.”

NBC has been hit with heavy criticism for its Olympics coverage, tape-delaying for hours some of the most popular events for its primetime programming.

As SB Nation observed: “Not NBC’s finest moment, certainly. But in their defense, they did have hours and hours to ensure that this would not happen. You know, because all of their primetime stuff airs in tape delay in every time zone. You may have heard about that.”

It’s also not the first time NBC has had trouble with an Olympics commercial this week: The AP noted it aired a “Today” show spot showing swimmer Missy Franklin with her first gold medal right before showing the actual race where she won it.

Now replace this with a Fox news anchor saying after Missy Franklin won that there are some young white girls out there etc. Thats racist why isn’t the other? Because to liberals only conservatives and whites can be racist.

Yes, the comments where definitely racist in nature. I would normally say that the commercial was not racist and for idiots to get over it BUT, this is NBC so it must be racist and it meets their own bar for being racist certainly.

Good point Rabbit. Why can’t Gabby inspire a white girl? Or Michael Phelps inspire a black kid? When I was a boy my faovorite baseball player was Lee May with the Reds. He played 1st base and so did I. I didn’t have to find a white first baseman to idolize.

I am so happy for and proud of this wonderful young lady. It is ridiculous that we as a country are so divided and politically correct that her great achievement is diminished by a make believe scandal. Anyone with a brain knows this was not meant as a racial slur. But everyone also knows that if the Olympics were televised on FOX talking heads at NBC would be leading the charge of racism and demanding that heads roll. Sanity and common sense must be restored and restored quickly if our Republic is going to survive.
Gabby Douglas you represented the United States will class and grace, well done!

I’ve watched about 5 min. of this Olympics so far, but from what I’ve seen the people love Gabby as much or more than they did Mary Lou Retton. So, NBC is a victim of it’s own PCness. The ridiculous race encompassing lil bigots get mad about everything. Like if a watermelon had been pictured in the background of a soap commercial that would be racist. This Monkey commercial is poor taste because of the PC leftist’s. People that make commericals work for NBC Universal and making that commercial is common sense to be non PC. Monkey’s make for good commericals.

The ridiculous Costas is fool, because all young girls (white, yellow, blue, black, and brown) can admire what Gabby did. It’s Amazing how ridiculous the commie networks are… thanks to Odisastrousblamera’s group of PC leftist and his lapdog MSM.

@NETMAIL – I agree with you on the fact that NBC sucks. But I disagree with you that everyone saw and thought that. I watched the broadcast that night, and was elated that Gabby Douglas won the gold. But when I saw that commercial the only thought that I was thinking was “well there is another show I won‘t watch on a network I can’t stand”. I guess if you see everything as “race” then you think everything has to do with race. Personally I do not give a crap what race a person is, it only matters what the content of their character is, period. There are plenty of good people out there of all races, and there are plenty of evil people out there…….of all races!

Oh, for heaven’s sake. Gabby herself said it was a black gymnast who inspired her, and it seems obvious there will be many young black girls who will be inspired by Gabby. She will inspire little white girls, too, but let’s face it — gymnastics is still a predominantly white sport. So it does matter that a young black woman has won the gold. So many white people accuse blacks of being overly-sensitive about race, but this time it looks to me like it’s the white people who are overly sensitive. Lighten up, and don‘t read things into Bob Costa’s remarks that aren’t there.

Because there were already successful white gymnast to inspire white girls to give it a try. Watching the first African-American girl to achieve this level of success, will inspire a lot of black kids who might not have otherwise considered gymnastics. It’s not racist because it’s an undeniable reality. Is it racist to say that Jackie Robinson or Jesse Owens was an inspiration to black youth?

      Here’s how it works.
      Olympics are in London.
      Commercials are in New York.
Executive producer in London says, “Gabby wins, let’s run that.”
      So, they do, afterwords,
Somebody on the phone from London says “break in 5, 4, 3, 2, ….
Meanwhile, New York, some guy in the tape room looks at the log and says,
“Break 12, we run spot #1355.”, he hears 3, 2, 1, and rolls it.

You’re giving NBC way too much credit to associate the two. (or control it)

Do not think for one minute that a producer at NBC isn’t placing its ads as part of their narrative. When the girl who set the world record in the 200meter breaststroke the event was immediately followed by an ad featuring her wherein they had inserted her new record time. 3) How title 9 (a govt dictate) was sooo wonderful.
      4) How Huffington Post who runs sexually titillating ads and articles constantly, ran the article worrying about inappropriate camera shots of the female beach volleyball athletes.

They ran a Nabisco cr*cker commercial after Phelps won the gold. It didn’t hurt my feelings.

Can you imagine the noise from the left if Fox or GB tv had done this? I see no offense here but to be fair Bob Costas should be fired because he is a racist based on how the left looks at these things. Really people we need to get back to the economy and get the real racists out of the White House.

COME ON!!!! Who even thinks of stuff like that any more? Who except racist bigots would even have the slightest thought of there being a relationship between a commercial and someone just on tv? That is just pure racism to even associate monkeys with blacks these days and even worse to accuse someone else of doing it.
This really makes me mad that people make these accusations, no matter who they are accusing

Gotta tell ya, I read the headline and thought ……. THIS IS TERRIBLE. Then I watched the clip and realized that I had been watching when that happened and it never dawned on me that I could even conceivably considered some sort of racial slur. People …… GROW UP!

That being said, is Bob Costas taking on a ……. Larry King“ness”?

Gabby Douglas praised God, after her win, on NBC interviews, this was NBC‘s smackdown on Douglas’s God, comment, as the monkey spot doesn’t just reek of racism, but of evolution!!….NBC, the nationalist bully corporation!

Good grief!!! I would have never considered showing that commercial to be even remotely “racist” – and believe me I would take any opportunity to knock NBC if I could!!Thanks, Obama for creating such an explosive atmosphere of racism in this country that people are just LOOKING for any possible excuse to cry racism. This “stretch” of an accusation just took it to a whole new level. BTW congrats to Gabby – she is one of the most amazing gymnasts I’ve ever seen – that girl can literally fly!

Thats how NBC really sees blacks thats why they made the correlation. I clearly saw it as just a commercial. NBC merely confirmed what many of us already knew. They see blacks as subhuman a tool to be used. Same ole slave master mentality. ::::Golfclap::: Well played NBC Well played

We might have found the ***** in their armor!
      These people are so ridiculous.
The point that the so called racism had to be explained to those that are wondering what they are talking about speaks volumes.
The ridiculous part is when people point out, it is the first African American to do this or that, now there is racism. Show me the linage maybe it’s from Jamaica or Haiti. I do not hear any one saying the first Russian American, or first Asian American, or how about Swiss American?
How about Phelps what is his linage he’s absolutely a first.
Race is not the factor, she is an American that metaled, and congratulations on the culmination from all the hard work to get to that point.
