A Nebraska high school student shot his principal and was later found dead Wednesday afternoon in an incident that unfolded at Millard South High School in Omaha.
The Omaha World-Herald reports that the school’s principal, Curtis Case, and vice principal, Vicki Kasper, were injured during today’s shooting and one was air-lifted to a nearby hospital. No students were injured during the ordeal.
Robert Butler, Jr., a 17-year-old senior, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head in his car a few miles from the school following the shooting, police say.
It remains unclear why Butler, the son of an Omaha Police detective, shot the school officials.
The Associated Press reports that Case is in stable condition and Kasper was in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon.
A 16-year-old student at the school told the AP lunch was just beginning when a school administrator came into the cafeteria, warning students to take cover. “He was like yelling, ‘Get in the kitchen! Get in the kitchen!’ He was waving his arms. You knew something was wrong and it wasn’t a drill,” said Laura Olson, who is the daughter of an AP reporter.
Olson, a junior at Millard, estimated the episode took place around 12:45 p.m. The first emergency calls to police were reportedly received around 12:50 p.m.
The school was on lockdown after the shooting, but by 3 p.m., students were being released in groups from the school. Parents were allowed to pick them up at a nearby church.
Millard South High School, a school of about 2,100 student, sits on the west side of Omaha, within the city limits. Last February, one student was expelled after he brought a stun gun to school. As the student went after another, the athletic director stepped in to break up the fight, getting a shock himself.
“We need prayers and we need hugs,” Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle said.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 6:30pmAn unhappy, miscreant 17 year old boy killed his principal, shot his assistant principal and killed himself. None of us here know the family history or their situation. None of us know proof positive what type of parenting his family practiced, or what help they had or didn’t have. What we do know is that the boy did the shooting. He is the guilty party & no excuses should be made for him. All I can say is that someone who goes to this extent of violence has lost all hope & has no faith in God. I pray for all of the families & friends affected. God bless all of them.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 6:12amThere is no proof that god(s) exists or don’t exist. Either way I hate god(s). When I was when school I wanted to kill some of the faculty or the students but I never did. It was good that I didn’t because I would
have made my life really bad. I can satisfy the urge by thinking about killing people now or hoping they have terrible lives. I do feel sorry for the kid who committed suicide and his family.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 12:44amOf course they left out that fact UNSAFE. It will be swept under the rug. You know I wouldn’t think race was such a factor if they displayed other races who commit crimes as much as they do whites on the national media networks. I’m sure someone will come on here and say, “Oh Gee but race is not a factor.” Really. What if I told you that between 1950 and the year 2000 blacks have killed around 50,000 whites. They’ve killed even more of their own people. Go google it, someone did a study on interracial crime and compared it to the amount of lynchings from like 1890 to like 1940 or something and it was around 3,000. And to think we’re at war with muslim extremists. What joke.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:16amBigot much? You’re comparing two very different times in history, it doesn’t work. The FBI reports that in 2009 there were 652 victims of anti-white hate crimes NATIONALLY! Black victims? 2,724.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 12:19amThey sure lift out the fact in the news that the boy doing the shooting was black. Now why is that?
Report Post »mrlogan3
Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:07amBecause race doesn’t matter here, a student brought a (probably liscenced) gun to school and shot people, it‘s wrong if he’s black, white, asian or purple.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 10:42pmVicki Kasper just died from her injuries.
Butler (the shooter) is/was a coward. He did something to get suspended, and instead of taking the suspension and just dealing with it, he had to be a vindictive moron and go “punish” Vicki Kasper and Curtis Case. After shooting them, instead of going to the cops and turning himself in, he took the easy way out of it and shot himself.
I hope his parents didnt have any other children, because they were apparently raising a little narcissist. We’re already hearing stories of how Butler was such a “nice guy”, and how people cant believe that he could have done something like this. I’m sure if people who knew him think back, there are probably little hints of the type of person he turned out to be. Stuff like this doesnt just happen. There were probably signs that he was a homicidal maniac.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 9:17pmSupposedly the kid have moved to Omaha from Lincoln, about an hour away and wasn’t happy here for whatever reason. As far as not being able to believe it couldn’t happen here, we all are probably in that boat. We can’t believe that this world has come to the point that this happens EVER! So sad.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 9:00pmThe shooter’s father is a detective with the Omaha Police Department. They were speculating that the nutjob had taken his father’s service weapon and used it in the shooting. There was also an unconfirmed story that he was also wearing his father’s bulletproof vest when he was shooting the school administrators.
He blamed the school in his suicide note on his Facebook page. Just another narcissistic moron who reacted violently when someone attempted to discipline him. (they’re not sure of the timeline of when it happened, but he was apparently “drifting” or doing “donuts” in the grass or on the school’s football field, and was being suspended or just coming off of suspension today for that.)
What bothers me is other Omahan’s amnesia about other shootings and spree killings. People on the news tonight were saying they “couldnt believe this could happen here”. It already has! TWICE! (Spree shooter at Club 89 in 1977, and a spree shooter who shot up the Von Maur store at the Westroad’s Mall in december of 2007…that one killed 8 people before killing himself)
There is something wrong with society that these spree killings keep happening. Not just here in Omaha, but all over the country.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 7:40pmThis is the result of a total lack of respect for other human beings. It’s what the “baby boomers” did to their children. Now we have children that tell their parents NO!, to “SHUT UP”, and take what they want rather than earn it. This “generation of vipers” was created from a desire of self centered material greed. Houses were bought for investments instead of a place to nurture a family. the government and citizens began a campaign of amorality where “anything goes”. The government “took over the schools” and parents were essentially told they weren’t needed just their money. Children are taught to defy parents, that they have their own rights and parents have no say. There is no discipline in the home and none in the schools.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 6:54pmKids today are thrust into chaos and violence from the time they smuggle in their first M Rated video game. They know more about sexual variety at 12 than I knew at 21. They listen to profane, violent and suggestive rap music. The government keeps God out of their schools. The teachers want no part of teaching traditional morality but have no problem showing condoms on cucumbers. The government is confusing their understanding of sexuality by defining deviancy down. Both parents (if they have two) are busy working or otherwise occupied. Parents often are fighting addiction. Is it any wonder a few kids go off the deep end? And you think the TSA approach at school doors, arming teachers and zero tolerance are going to fix anything? That is just treating the symptoms, not curing the disease. And in this brave new world, it looks like things won’t be getting any better soon.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 7:09pmThis has nothing to do with glamorizing violence and 100% to do with deliberately devaluing human life. They left fought long and hard for legal abortions, that put a value on human life of a few hundred bucks or less. They fought long and hard for outcome based education that teaches young kids they are the most special thing in the world, there are no wrong or right answers, only the ones they come up with, which devalues life and creates monsters.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 6:05pmI hate to see this crap time and time again. When are parents going to learn that the children they raise are not living in a bubble. They have to be taught how to deal with anger, depression, and other feelings in a responsible way. Life isn’t a video game, and there are no second lives. Guns are present in society, and unless you are defending your life there is no reason to point one at another human being. I was raised around guns, by good parents who cared how my day was going, and spent hours each day making sure I was prepared for the problems every day life brings. I hate to blame it on parents, but it’s just a fact. Kids are not born knowing how to navigate life, and if we don’t teach them, they will get it from Govt., tv, music, games, or other children that are not prepared themselves. None of which, to me is a good source of responsability. Live your child’s life with them, and set an example which can be followed.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 7:44pmAgreed. While I was reading this story I was wondering how on earth a parent could have a child so close to the edge and not intervene. Were there no signs of the pain or depression this kid was going through that caused to choose this? Puting God back in our lives could be helpful so these kids have someone to turn to when there seems to be no hope or help.
