Under the student health care plan at the University of California (UC) – Berkeley, students can receive coverage of up to $75,000 for sex-change operations and other related therapy, documents obtained on Monday by Campus Reform reportedly indicate.
According to the “2012-13 UC Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan Benefits Booklet,”the publicly funded university will provide up to 90 percent of the controversial procedure, which comes out to about $75,000.
Also covered under UC Berkeley’s health care plan are students who would like to have “hormone therapy” and “gender confirmation (reassignment) surgery.” Better yet, the university will also pay for some “certain travel costs” associated with a sex-change operation because there are only a “limited number of providers” near the school.
The Leadership Institute’s Campus Reform has more details:
The costs for a sex change operation alone, without additional travel costs, can exceed $50,000. Many private health care providers do not pay for these operations due to their cost and questionable health benefits.
The documents also reveal that the university health plan will cover up to 90-percent of costs [for] abortions.
Despite multiple inquiries the UC’s administration did not reveal the number of sex-change operations or abortions provided under the plan or when the plan was amended to include these controversial operations.
When students are accepted into the university, they are automatically enrolled in its student health care plan and must apply for a “waiver” to be exempt from buying into it.
UC Berkeley’s website describes its student health care plan as “a comprehensive major medical insurance plan, providing medical, counseling, prescription, vision and dental services.”
Funny, it doesn’t mention sex-change operations.

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 8:18amThis is an amazing example of illogical compassion gone wrong. It reminds me of the daycare scandals back in the 80s and 90s. Little children and parents were manipulated by gov prosecuters and so called psychologists into believing and testifying in court that care takers had sexually abused them. This was followed up by private shrinks and private patients suddenly remembering sexual abuses by family members that supposedly happened way back in their childhood.
Report Post »So today, people are being persuaded that they cannot live out their right to the “pursuit of happiness” unless they get their bodies surgically altered with all the risks that go with surgery. Also homosexuals are convinced that their rights are violated unless everybody elevates LGBT rights above that of anybody who disagrees with them.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 9:39pmWell to understand why its a contraversy to some people… One would have to undersand that sex change operation has a history in sterilization procedures, and population control in the eugenics movement… At one time sex change operations were made to individuals without concent… Parents choosing what they wanted their child to be.
Some feminists even link it a form of mutilation.
Here is a women who now suffers “buyer’s remorse”…
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6923912.stm
But a leading feminist campaigner claims that sex reassignment surgery is based on unscientific ideas – and could be doing more harm than good.
“I should never have had sex change surgery,” Claudia MacLean, a transsexual woman told the audience at a recent debate organised by the BBC Radio 4 programme Hecklers and the Royal Society of Medicine in London.
“As a result of the surgery, I am incapable of sex and I have lived a life apart.”
Claudia was speaking out in support of Julie Bindel, a radical feminist and journalist, who was trying to persuade medics and trans people that sex change surgery is unnecessary mutilation.
Still others might tie it to 1963′s 45 goals of the Communist Party USA;

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 9:58pmWhat was done to David Rymer was not sex reassignment surgery, because he was an infant, not a knowing, cognizant adult. What happened to Claudia MacLean was that she was not well served by the mental health profession in Britain, which has no connection whatsoever with the process in America, and has no bearing on the validity of sex reassignment surgery here. If one person dies from an experimental medication, we do not ban all people who could benefit from it from taking it.
And the linkage to the Communist Party Platform is the worst form of demagoguery. Transsexuality is not homosexuality. It’s not degeneracy. It’s not promiscuity.
Again, I ask, for living, loving, thinking, feeling, cognizant adults who go through the necessary psychological and medical treatments to receive SRS, what is the so-called “controversy”?

I have spent countless times reading through the numbers and yes the suicide rate in transgenders is high many carry compounding issues, and in Europe where its far easier to switch genders then in the US its the idea of regret for the procedure is out there and does happen. But sadly any numbers of people after transition is often skewed by many of those that transition try to for go any help afterwards. Be it medical financial or mental help as one of the most persecuted and attacked group of people that often live in poverty and have to turn to living a life outside the laws of their country or shunned by society for their personal choices in their lives. Compound these facts in any case and you have the ground for depression and suicidal thoughts and with many (myself included) have lived through a attempt of taking ones own life hope needs to be found and reason to go on, that is how people survive in the world and that how any true trans person should live their lives.

To make sacredhonor1776′s point simple, so you might be understanding, sex change medical proceedures are radical and risky proceedures. It might sound good to those who think they want it, but current medical proceedures are not sophisticated enough to actually turn a man into a woman or a woman into a man. From my point of view, it’s radical cosmetic surgery with gender enhancing drugs. You might not like what I’m saying, but as with sacredhonors, it’s the truth, for whatever that’s worth to you.
With due respect, it also sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. You might want to remove it when investigating the facts it may help you open your eyes to reality. Just a thought.

This is true, and I also think this is part of where the “controversy” actually arises. Is the contraversy because of the actual act of sexual reassignment or the contraversy of those are disagree with the concept?
What I mean to many doing the “shunning”, sex change is treated nearly in the same category as homosexuality and abortion in social conservatism. I think Hollow Points missed what I was alluding to, but I refer to concept where it is pointed out that it is believed by social conservatives (perhaps not all) and by biologists that physical ‘gender’ is defined by chromosomes XY and XX. Male and female. From that perspective someone chromosomally born male, XY who has a “cosmetic” sex change to become female, and loves other “men” would still be a “homosexual”. If that person loves ‘women’, but considers themselves more of a lesbian, some might still see this as some kind of contraversial (‘going against nature’)?
This arguement rarely goes beyond the fact that there are those with extra chromosomes that don’t neatly fit into the traditional male or female dichotomy, but are “intersexed”. These individuals may decide to be male, female, through surgery, or decide to remain the same.
Report Post »SacredHonor1776
Posted on August 29, 2012 at 12:24amNow, I remind its not easy nor accurate to lump all “social conservatives” into one group, there are different points of view. It may also depend on each individuals upbringing, and doctrinal beliefs. But not all believe the same things when it comes to this subject, and not all necessarily lump topics such as homosexuality, abortion, transgender, or other gender related topics together, or agree on same views for each of those topics (I.E. a pro-life person isn’t necessarilly anti-homosexual, or against sex-changes).
While I have read people use the XY/XX arguement (”once physically a male/female, always a male/female even if cosmetically “mutilated””), i’m not sure what if any arguements they might have with those with atypical chromosomes.
Report Post »SacredHonor1776
Posted on August 29, 2012 at 12:52amIn reference to Dir’s post… I’m sure he is aware of people who are now choosing to use “hormone” blocking drugs on their children, in order to allow their children to grow up (but without puberty) before they decide what “gender” (in the psychological sense, not the physical) they might want to be… Some going as far to purposely not name their child (so that the child can later name uh ‘itself’), or use gender loaded pro-nouns.
The problem with this though is many of the gender hormone blocking drugs (similar to sex change drugs) can cause adverse effects including sterilization. To enforce that on a child even to give them a chance to decide years later is akin to chemical mutilation in my eyes… Child abuse…
From a mental standpoint those kids are more likely to become even more confused as they get older… Since it will be very difficult for the child to interact with anyone around that looks at life under traditional lense.
Report Post »SacredHonor1776
Posted on August 29, 2012 at 1:30amIn addition there are some ethical questions that must be asked, that can be controversial…
Does a cosmetically sex-changed transgendered person have the responsibility to inform their partner of their biological gender?
Secondly does a cross-dressing transgendered person who is convincing have the responsibility to tell their date that they are transgendered?
Some partners who think the person they are dating is of the opposite biological sex, may not take kindly to being ‘lied’ to. If I recall this has lead to some lawsuits based on false premises (one example I remember reading, a women who married a ‘man’, and found out later he was originally a ‘she’). This lead to an anullment. Good relationships are based on complete honesty in all things.
One might mentally scar the other person, if they aren’t prepared for that kind of news… Not everyone is going to be open to that kind of relationship.
In the worst case, there has been cases where the person dating the transgendered person, couldn’t take it and killed when they found out (obviously the reaction went way too far, and are quite guility). But it does point that a person is increasing their own danger if they are dishonest in anyway to someone they may be persuing, or allow to persue them.
But it does point out that there is a ethical line that may be crossed.

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 9:01amThere are a lot of issues involved and yeah far too often I find cases of crimes against trans people tend to be done as they tend to live in their lives hidden but its not always the case. Sad but the numbers aren’t good, a few weeks ago I sat in on a conference to stop the violence in the community and the suicide attempts but when you see numbers like close to 50% unemployment, 75% claim to have been the victim of crimes and of that, about 50% tend of them tend to not interact with authorities (police, Medical help) with fear of discrimination. Sad it does exists today and is one of the few areas that needs to be worked out. But many of these cases tend to be issues of sex crimes, when a person who goes through this life finds it hard to find work and must turn to other ways to make money and go through the change illegally. Personally I had a supportive family and was in and out of therapy through out my life since I was 5 do to quote anger issues when I finally came out at 29 the issues of my temper faded as the fodder for that issue was finally being dealt with it took me 3 years of therapy to be cleared for medication. I had to get into a better physical shape as well, the contraversay is in two parts because of this, one there stand some people who try to transition for the wrong reasons something only long days of therapy and a whole mess of tears can find add to that the will of not being able to live with the current self, ether suicidal or just depressed …
Report Post »Brittany-Imbriaarts
Posted on August 29, 2012 at 9:12amThe second issue that cause is the risk of both the meds, Female to Male people like Chaz Bono are placed at a huge risk for liver disease from testosterone injection, Male to Female like myself risk are at increased issues such as Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. This is before one risks the knife, which still is a difficult surgery and has a week of recovery in the hospital then two months of recovery after do to the stress it causes the body and the risk of working so near the major arteries of the legs. Science is improving however, and recent reports are stating things may soon change and the full transition (a transition that does offer a chance to grant a former male to give birth) is now stated about 10 years away with the development. Its not a easy road, in fact its far harder. Since coming out I have faced challenges I never would have if I simply remained, but I love the challenge and strive to keep working to my goal in the end but things like therapy have been and will in the future be needed and its important that any one transitioning take note of it, if nothing more then help one make the steps from day to day.

The people that seek SRS are taking a HUGE leap and risking their health in so many ways. It should not be persued until a thorough mental health program is entered into before and after surgery. The high suicide rates could easily be explained by the years it takes to articulate the persons feelings, gain/lose love and acceptance by family and friends and the courage to set out to living as the gender you feel you should have been born as. I can’t even imagine the depression that can come from the hormone treatments. Through it all, if it is a sin, it is between the person and God. Not to be judged by man. Posted on August 28, 2012 at 6:53pmHmmmm, if Sandra Fluke enrolls….it will no longer need birth control, right?
Report Post »Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra
Posted on August 28, 2012 at 6:57pmSeeing that Ms. Fluke spends thousands a year on birthcontrol, I would assume the STD’s need curing before she changes sex. Or she will end up be the first GUY with a really bad yeast infection/clap/syphillis and overall tuna smell in the guys locker room. Of course, she already has the GUYS face, that won’t need much changing.
