Neglected NYC Blizzard Trash Foils Man’s Suicide Attempt

New York City‘s sanitation department has recently come under fire for delayed snow removal that may have contributed to some residents’ deaths. Now, a dereliction of duty could have saved someone’s life.
One of the side effects of the recent snow storm in NYC is that trash removal has been an afterthought. Bags of trash have been piling up on sidewalks for about a week as the sanitation department works to clear the streets. So when a suicidal man jumped nine stories from a Manhattan building on Sunday afternoon, a massive pile of garbage broke his fall.
From the New York Post:
“I can’t believe the garbage broke his fall,” said an astounded neighbor, Ingrid Suprock, 26, who lives next door.
“I guess the trash saved the guy.”
For the first time in a torturous week, what has been going all wrong, finally went right.
Collecting trash has been piling up around the city — as sanitation workers try to catch up with snow removal that has bogged down the city since the day after Christmas.
But with Mother Nature helping to melt the 20 inches that got dumped in the devastating blizzard, the city has been turning its attention to the gathering garbage — untouched since the storm.
“It’s been out here all week,” Suprock said of the trash out in front of the victim’s building, and others along the block.

Posted on January 3, 2011 at 2:28pmI’m sorry. I know I’m supposed to be very Christian here… I’m glad the man lived & hope he’ll get help. That being said, you guys are pretty dang funny. And, my daughter just sang the words to “Always look on the bright side of life”, which she says is from the Life of Brian (?).
